The door swung open with a flourish! Huzzah! As much of a flourish as ever a door opened with, anyway. "Here we are~!" Kyo said with a grin, stepping into the room and clicking on the light. "Just, uh... leave the stuff on one o' the beds!"

And the green-haired girl bounded into the room (quite unladen, as Hiroko, being the man, had been laden down with all of the luggage on the way up), dropped the room's keycard on the TV stand as she passed, and then walked up to the window, throwing the curtains wide and grinning at the view. It felt like she could see half the city from up here! Spencer had gotten them rooms on one of the higher floors. One of the really higher floors! Hell, she could leave the curtains open just like this and there would be no worries whatsoever about anyone peeping at them. Glorious! She'd always wanted to try sex with the window open.

Well, if "for the last two and a half tenths of a second" counted as "always."

The room was well-furnished but all in all nothing super-special. It was a hotel room, and hotels were vastly over-rated in general as far as Kyo was concerned... the only hotels that had ever looked interesting to Kyo were love hotels, and only because they were tended to be decked out with silly stuff like revolving beds, disco lights, and heart-shaped tubs, basically stuff you wouldn't find in your average bedroom.

But it was a nicer bedroom than the one back home, that was for sure! Kyo turned around and flopped belly-first onto the bed, letting out a laugh and a happy sigh before rolling onto her back and closing her eyes... with her legs thrown out over the side of the bed and dangling there.

"So soft~ it must be the dream of every responsible American t' do well in school so they can afford mattresses like these when they're sixty and can't have fun on 'em anymore~" Kyo said blissfully from her position on the bed. "I can't wait 'til tomorrow. There's so much t' do in this city, Hiroko, I straight up dunno where t' start! I'm like, totally kissin' Nat's feet for the next two years for invitin' us along on this trip! You have no idea how long I've wanted t' see America in person!"

Oh my God, I LEFT THE STOVE ON AT HOME!

Hiroko wheezed and collapsed face-first onto the other bed after he dropped all the luggage atop said bed. Hiroko began breathing heavily, his back and arms aching. "Who the hell decided the person with the Y chromosome has to carry all the shit?" panted Hiroko. "Seriously, my spine feels like an abused bendy straw..."

Maybe he was overexaggerating- it wasn't exactly a heavy load- but exhaustion from jet lag made everything feel harder to do.

Kyo didn't get up. She just lifted a hand up and pointed at the ceiling.

"He did," she said in an utterly serious tone of voice. "Take it up with the guy upstairs. He's the one who decided guys would get the upper body strength, girls would get the kickass legs. It's the laws o' nature, dude. Don't argue with the laws o' nature."

She opened her eyes, tilted her head back so she could just barely see Hiroko standing by the other bed, and blew a little raspberry at him.

"If your back feels that bad, get over here and lemme do somethin' about it, yeah?"

"..."

Hiroko didn't respond to Kyo's invitation. He was thinking about the PMs Shinta had sent him, the ones telling him that his Shadow was capable of physically assaulting Shinta. Wonder if his Shadow will be giving him grief while we're here.... thought Hiroko. He felt like he was worrying a bit too much- however, it made some sense since Shinta was ostensibly Hiroko's best friend.

Kyo would see that Hiroko had a worried look on his face.

Kyo had been expecting an immediate response, probably of the cheesy hubba-hubba variety. When she didn't get any sort of reply at all, she found herself at a bit of a loss. So after a few seconds she sat up and turned around, crossing her legs on the bed in front of her so she could get a look at her boyfriend that didn't involve forcing her brain to translate an upside-down image into something meaningful.

She saw the frown on his face and frowned in turn. Frowns were contagious. And, distinctly unsexy. Or at least, Kyo thought they were unsexy. Some people probably got off on frowns, in fact there was probably someone out there who did, there was someone out there who got off on just about any given thing to have ever existed.

People were sick fucks like that. But never mind! Boyfriend, frowning. Probably important.

"What's up, Hiro-kun? Are ya feelin' sick or somethin'?" she asked, tilting her head to one side. The thought that he might have something on his mind that wasn't related to his own problems hadn't occurred to her just yet. Maybe the sunlight on the way over had given him a headache, she thought.

"...Shinta sent me a message over Bedlam a few days before we left." said Hiroko, moving to rummage through the luggage for his laptop, where he'd saved the transcript Shinta had sent him. "He said that his Shadow has been able to actually attack him and has started beating him up whenever it shows up. He sent me a document with everything the Shadow told him..."

Hiroko found the file in question, 'Shadow.doc' and opened it, turning the laptop around so Kyo could read it.

Kyo blinked a few times, looking about as utterly nonplussed as she felt. It wasn't that Hiroko was worried about Shinta that confused her... it was the timing. Here she was, his sexy sweet green-haired minx of a girlfriend, and here they were, alone in an expensive hotel room with a whole night ahead of them to take advantage of the situation... and of all the times he could have brought this up over the last couple days, he'd chosen now?

I don't get it.

...Don't look at me. Thou art I and I am thou, and I'm just as stumped as you are.

Nevertheless, she hopped off the bed and sat down on the edge of the other, pulling Hiroko's laptop a bit closer to read what was there. So Shinta's Shadow had been going off at him for being undisciplined, huh... hmph, flat-out explained what it meant in totally bald terms, too, that was actually a bit refreshing to see. And...

...

"Well, my Shadow usedta do somethin' like that, but it's a hallucination at the end o' the day," she said in a pitying tone. "Even if the pain feels real, it can't actually hurt ya. Otherwise we'd have a bunch users gettin' black eyes from their other selves, wouldn't we? And hoo-boy, the unlucky fucks who had Hoculus when that was a thing would prolly've been a lot worse off."

The green-haired girl looked up, frowning a bit.

"Why didn'tcha tell me about this before we left? We coulda maybe talked to him about it or somethin'," she said. Then, looking back to the laptop screen, she added, "Why're ya only just now bringin' it up?"

Yeah, like, seriously. I am so totally in the opposite of Friendship Mode right now! My head's all fuzzy with the thought of steamy stuff that would involve lots and lots of digital mosaic back home! ...Oooh, while I'm here, I need to take advantage of the wi-fi and get some uncensored stuff. I wonder what the download speeds are like?

...Cereza.

...........Whaaaat, you were thinking it, too!

........CEREZA.

Don't play innocent!

SERIOUSLY, CEREZA, JUST STOP.

"I dunno...I tried going over it and figuring it out myself, but I couldn't really figure out why Shinta's being bothered by his Shadow when it's being so to-the-point with him. I think he's in denial...."

Hiroko looked back at the document. "Do you know anything about what this means by him screwing up in front of Shane and Natsumi? I asked him about that and he wouldn't answer me..."

"Screw-up with Shane and Natsumi. Well..."

Kyo tilted her head back a bit, frowning, trying to remember the details of what she had walked in on when she'd met the three of them at the mall. In the end, though, all she could do was shrug. "Well, I remember walkin' in on 'em when things were a bit tense, but all Shinta said was he asked somethin' he shouldn'ta asked. Not sure what it was."

The girl scratched at the back of her head, glancing Hiroko's way with a dubious look on her face.

"Well, I dunno what it is, but these things aren't things other people can figure out for us. Believe me, I've tried. Many, many, many many times. He'll figure it out. No reason t' get too stressed-out worryin' in the meanwhile, right?"

The girl set Hiroko's computer aside and hopped to her feet, stretching her arms over her head and arching her back, feeling a delicious crackling in her lower back at the motion. Ah, yes, that hit the spot! She hadn't even noticed how bad hours on end in a plan followed by taxi time had hit her until she'd pulled off that stretch! Turning back to Hiroko, she put one hand on her hip and smiled a bit.

"Not t' say I'm not concerned. Shinta's got a lot on his plate. Talkin' about 'discipline,' though, he does get a bit overdramatic with his emotions. Not t' shortsell what he's goin' through, but everyone's gotta learn t' put on a brave face and keep on truckin' through the hard times. Shinta... has this issue of lettin' everything fuel this 'my life is so horrible' mood. T' the point where he forgets the good things that happen in-between the bad things. It's a little..."

The understanding-sort-of-smile on Kyo's face slowly slipped off.

"Well. A non-charitable person would call it 'whiny.' I'm not non-charitable, so I'm just gonna say... urm... well, he's got a big thing hangin' over his head with his mom bein' sick but that doesn't make the little things any less little, that's all."

"That mood he's in does match up with what the Shadow said about his Arcana." Hiroko pointed out. "'Losing control', 'aiming your agression all wrong'..."

Hiroko paused, biting his lip and putting those two phrases together. "Losing control of his aggression...? Maybe he's got anger management issues, and he's getting all worked up without knowing how to calm down. Dr. Kobayashi told me that when you're stressed and don't let it out, it's like being in a pressure cooker that nobody's keeping an eye on- it keeps building up more and more heat and pressure until-"

Hiroko made a rapid expanding gesture with his hands and exhaled to make a low, rumbling noise indicating an explosion. "Maybe that's why he's making a big deal out of everything- he's boiling over and the lid of the pot's on too tight for him to get out without exploding."

Suddenly Hiroko felt this glow of pride, like he'd just solved some complicated equation and the whole class was impressed with him. Was this how Kyo felt when she was helping others with their baggage? If so, why'd she ever feel so guilty about it, it was like getting to the afterglow without ever having to take your clothes off!
