"Oh, well. I guess it still gives people something to shoot for, something that keeps 'em warm at night, y'know ? Can't blame them for that. Could be a problem if everyone expects their dreams to be served to them with a silver platter, I guess." Natsumi replied, shrugging her shoulders to say that she didn't really care all that much.

Then Shane mentioned that he'd have been aiming at working in the police, and she broke into a fit of long, high-pitched and uncontrolable laughter - it wasn't a mocking fit of laughter, just one that had come from a particular irony that she'd found in the situation. She struggled to form a coherent sentence, and wiped a tear off the conrer of her eye when she looked back at her boyfriend.

"Oh, damn... Whew... I guess that fifteen years from now, you'd have looked back and shaken your head at all those youngsters with their long dyed hair, their longcoats and their pricey boots. Whew... It'w nice alughing like this once in a while." For some reason, imagining Shane as a cop was something that she found absolutely hilarious.

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Shane wasn't about to argue with Natsumi on that first point... but her laughter left him feeling a bit confused, mentally stumbling for purchase, unsure how to react to. He'd mentioned a vague desire to be a cop--what else was he going to be, a pro wrestler? He didn't really have any particular talents or strong points besides being physically fit, able to fight, and if he did say so himself, pretty good at keeping a level head where others would lose theirs. So what was so funny?

It was something he couldn't find the humor in. He managed a neutral grin, and just said, "Well, it's less that I want it and more that I can't see myself doing much else. By the time I'm old enough to be a crotchety old bastard, I think the younger kids are going to be doing something a lot sillier than we do... unigender belly-shirts in the winter, maybe. That's something to shake your head and grumble about."

...Shane thought he could see the street they were looking for ahead. Not far, now...

"Well, if you can't see me as a cop, then, what do you see me as?" he couldn't help asking, with just a touch of defensiveness in his voice. It was a good question, he thought. What exactly did Natsumi see him eventually doing? Or in a roundabout way... what kind of person did she think he was?

"Hey, don't feel insulted. It's just that the mental image was pretty funny to me, is all. I'm sure you'd be competent." Natsumi replied with a shrug of her shoulders, seriously thinking about Shane's inquiry for a few moments. The question was, to tell the truth, quite interesting - indeed, what did she imagine him as when he'd be older.

"Well, your brain works well, and you ain't afraid to put the work in when it's necessary, so I'd say that you can shoot for a lot of stuff if you want to... Fuck, I don't even know. Something in business, perhaps ?" Shane Spencer with a corporate cut didn't look much better in her mind, but... oh, well. She didn't care that much.

Shane sighed lightly at the explanation, a halfhearted glower without any real emotion to it being his only answer. Her answer to his question was disappointingly vague, although why this disappointed him in the first place he wasn't quite sure. Was he expecting her to have him completely and painstakingly psycho-analyzed, or something?

...No, that would be silly and a little creepy. And a little too much like Charinko for his liking.

"I don't really want to go into business," Shane said frankly, turning his attention back to where he was going. "Maybe the business end of an industry I really like, movies or videogames or something. I don't see myself making them, though. I'm an admirer of fine arts, but I don't think I have it in me to actually be the artiste, you know?"

"Hmmm." Natsumi replied as she thought to herself for a few moments. He thought he didn't have it in him to be an artiste, uh ? Well, she had no reason to believe that he was wrong to think that about himself, but that made a tinge of curiosity bloom in her mind...

"Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm sure you could find your hidden talents if you spent some time searching for 'em... Though, if you like movies or videogames, I'm sot sure working in the business end of them will help you keep loving them." she said with an ironic grin.

"Ha! Hidden talents," Shane said with a small laugh and a vaguely dejected sort of shrug. "Unfortunately, the idea that everyone has those is a myth. But who knows? Maybe I have one or two I haven't found yet."

The boy scratched at the bottom of his chin, considering the point Natsumi made.

"Well, it depends, I guess. A job's a job. At least if it's kind of related to something you like, you can pretend it's a little less dull. I just want something I can be enthusiastic about, or, dedicated to, or something."

"Yeah, well... I suppose becoming more jaded and cynical about your work is kind of inevitable when you start doing it for long enough. Same goes for everything, I guess. Don't mean you can't be dedicated to it, but there's a good chance you're be brought down to reality quickly enough... Like, perhaps you'll end up doing it for different reasons than when you started off." Natsumi said in return, looking a bit concerned for a moment. Geez, if there was one thing she was hoping for, it was that this wouldn't happen with her and her music... Yes, it was probable that if she became a composer, she'd have to do her lot of alimentary stuff.

But that becoming the norm ? No way. No. Goddamn. Way.

"Speaking of that, I happen to have composed something just for you. Well, more precisely, you were part of a thought process that involved me thinking up some music, but afterwards, no way I couldn't dedicate it to you. My new year's gift to you when we get back, hmmm ?" That might have sounded cheesy as hell, but it was true nonetheless. Cheesy was fun, sometimes.

"Yeah..." Shane agreed a bit heavily, looking a little tired just thinking about it. No matter how much a career looked awesome beforehand, work was work and eventually it would grate. It was funny how things always devolved into a formula of alternating between unwanted obligation and killing time in-between, no matter what walk of life you went down. "Well, we'll see. I still have a bit of time before I really need to start thinking about it. I'm just not sure what career paths are really viable for a foreign kid who hasn't been here for more than a few years, is all. I keep meaning to research it, but, well..."

He shrugged, as to say both eh and meh in the same silent gesture. Then he looked to Natsumi with interest, and curiosity. He didn't seem absurdly touched, but there was a reflexive upward quirk to the sides of mouth anyway--as if he were trying to look a bit less happy than he really was, or perhaps suppressing a kind-of dopey grin.

"Ooh, I'm inspiring music now, am I? Hopefully not one of those songs pop stars write about their shitty ex-boyfriends. That's just embarrassing," the boy said, tilting his head to the side. "In all seriousness, though, I'm definitely interested. I'll be looking forward to that."

If it's about me? Definitely interested, Yamato snickered in his mind. Shane ignored his Persona, as usual.

She gave a slight grin when Shane said that he was definitely interested - yeah, of course he was, not like she had been expecting him to just go ahead and say nah, not interested in this piece you just composed for me. If he complimented her "perfect body", she might as well have flattered him back by stating how she'd made music just for him, right ? It wasn't abnormal in a relationship like theirs - she wasn't so sure how these were supposed to go, exactly...

She replied with... nothing, actually, because she didn't feel like there was anything worthwile to add in this particular subject. They could enjoy some silence between the two of them, couldn't they ? When these moments weren't awkward, that as when you knew you'd found someone special.

She only kept a content smile on her lips.
