She chuckled a bit when Shane mentioned her "perfect body" - yeah, of course it was an exagerration, but getting complimented once in a while was a sweet, sweet delicacy that went down your ear like auditive. "I'm sure you've been dying to show these well-built abs to the world for quite some time. But that-" She fondled her boyfriend's oh-so-shapely bottom with her free hand. "-is mine. Because I keep the finest pieces to myself." Not talking one's original language at home... Hmm, she didn't know what to think of it. On the one hand, well, people were free to talk whatever goddamn language they fancied in their own home, but there was something in her own idea of what a home should have been that found the notion of rejecting that... wrong, in a strange way. "Yeah, I totally get you. Good thing we're gonna have some nice reminder of true American taste shoved down our throats, right ?" She was trying to stop him from getting too concerned about it all... |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Shane's eyebrows went up a bit when Natsumi's hand found its way to his bottom, and he felt a strange urge to look over his shoulder. There was a muttering in English from further back that he could swear was related to that, and he found himself oddly--self-conscious. But whether it was a good feeling or a bad one he couldn't tell. Did he feel gratication at being seen with such a hot girl publicly showing her He almost didn't notice that he was actually supposed to respond to the remark, probably with some jest or wit, something smooth and cool... by the time he did, his mind was torn away from the subject by Natsumi's attempt to be understanding. He frowned a bit. Opened his mouth to talk, realized this was where they were supposed to turn, and lightly steered Natsumi around the corner as he spoke. "It's not that I care that much about America..." he said slowly. "I just... it's irritating. They're like a pair of high school kids. They shower themselves in luxuries, they moved to Japan without even giving me a thought, and yeah, they give me a great allowance and all these sweet birthday gifts and they treat me alright, but it's just..." The boy held up a hand and flexed his fingers, cracking the knuckles one-by-one. "I'm just someone that happens to live in the same house as them. They put money into me because it's their job, and then they go back to being a couple of party animals who are so lucky they got all this money and were able to get a nice job in the land of the rising sun. I told you I originally wanted this to be a family trip, right? The truth is I asked them last year. They actually asked me why they needed to be there. Said I was old enough to take care of myself. Totally missed the point." |

Natsumi... listened. She'd wanted to know how Shane felt, wanted to know what was bothering him on a deeper level than what he showed and the annoyances of everyday life - and boy, had she just been served on a silver platter, without having had to steer the conversation this particular way ! She wasn't going to complain, because that was what she'd wished all along. It was strange, really. Funny, even, if you had this kind of ironic sense of humor. How his parents acted like teenagers who'd never grown up despite having a kid, and how it contrasted with her parents - teenagers who'd been forced to grow into adults, just because she'd been born and because they'd both tacitly understood that they needed to give her a decent life. They'd been forced to become responsible, sink-or-swim, while his own parents hadn't had to go through all these stages... The rest of his family - she realized that she didn't know much about that - probably still was in America. Their were just his parents - the rest, he had to find himself, and the folks he should have been able to fall back on in case of trouble... didn't do their job all that well. Or at least, they didn't do a good joob at showing that they did - which meant the same thing, really. Had he felt lonely ? Had he felt the fear of being abandonned ? These had become important questions in the span of thirty seconds. She seemed to retreat into herself for an instant, her expression becoming unreadable. It was no time for casual flirting between lovers anymore. "They don't understand you wanna spend time with them." she replied - why ? Because even people who liked to see themselves as cool and independant still had a need for basic human closeness, she supposed. Everyone needed to have people special to them. "Are you afraid ?" she asked softly - her only hope was that he wouldn't be afraid to admit it if he was. There was nothing "uncool" with admitting that you afraid - damn, the only real way to know how "cool" you were was how you acted upon your fear, not whether or not you felt it or not. Only fools never felt fear. And those never lasted long, right ? |

"No, they don't," Shane said gruffly. "And frankly I've given up caring." It was nice letting the irritation he felt at his parents out in its entirety, though, that was a thing. Shane slipped his free hand into his pocket and was completely ready to just drop the topic and get a move on, but then Natsumi asked a question. A question that killed the smile he was trying to re-establish on his face before it had a chance to really form. Was he afraid? Afraid of what? scoffed Yamato, though its voice was oddly muted--had been ever since they had left Japan. What's there to be afraid of? Where the hell did that question come from?! Shane almost responded in just such a manner, but he bit back his knee-jerk reply. Despite her tone, he had to consciously remind herself that the question was borne of concern. But then, how was he supposed to answer? He wasn't afraid of anything, so-- And the moment he thought that a wave of dizziness passed over him, along with a twinge of pain in his head, centered around his eyes. Shane stumbled a bit, slapped a hand to his forehead, and... and then it was gone. There was nothing. He was fine. Sure you are. You just keep telling yourself that, Macho Man. Shane glanced to the side. For a moment, he thought he saw himself there, a yellow-eyed version of himself. But it was gone so quickly that he wasn't sure if it was a real vision, a trick of the light, or his own head giving him paranoid delusions because of what he knew about Personae and Shadows. The voice may just as easily have been one of the surrounding pedestrians. |

Shane stumbled, and she immediately asked herself if that had had anything to do with the question she'd just asked him - yes, she could have written that off as being a consequence of the heat or the boy's weakness to light, but she wasn't naive enough not to think of a link between her sentence and Shane's reaction. Had she incidentally made something come back in his mind ? Had her words been some kind of... trigger ? She bit her lower lip in worry - oh, damn, if she'd made her boyfriend feel horribly bad just because of one of her questions, she was going to blame herself for that forever, especially when they were there to avoid this kind of thing... "Are you okay ? I'm- I'm sorry if that was undiscreet or..." She didn't know what to say next - but her worry was more than obvious, and she was taking his reaction quite seriously. Oh, damn, now she was hoping that she wasn't going to annoy him over nothing... |

"Huh? No, no, it's nothing--" Shane said immediately attention snapping back to Natsumi. He forced a smiling grimace and shook his head a bit to clear it. "I think I just caught a glare or something from somewhere for a second. But I'm not sure I get what you're asking, exactly." That was a neutral enough answer... not understanding the question. He didn't really understand what Natsumi was getting at to begin with anyway, even if he didn't think there was any sort of fear he had that applied to it... why would he be afraid of anything to do with his parents, anyway? He was fine without them, he could look out for himself. They knew it, he knew it... so that was that. Shane rubbed at his eyes and just shooked his head, giving his girlfriend's hand a little squeeze. "Sorry if that gave you a spook." The twinge in his head was kind of a mystery, actually. He was pretty sure he hadn't caught any glare from anything... and he knew his Persona wasn't the kind that gave people mental issues, either, not like Nakadachi's or Charinko's last one. His Persona was just a Persona. It snarked a bit, did what he made it do, and that was that. There was nothing to worry about at all. |

"Well, what I wanted to know was..." It was true that her question hadn't been very specific, and she could understand that he hadn't known what to answer. "...If you were afraid that your parents are abandoning you, or something. Most of your family still lives her in America, right ?" Yeah, she couldn't help feeling worried - a consequene of her own problems with her own family, she supposed. "You know, I actually wanted to know what's happening in your head and what's bothering you and, well, can't say I didn't get what I wanted. I guess I'm just overdramatizing it." she said in a somewhat nervous tone that didn't hide her discomfort all that well. Damn, she didn't want to become annoying with her prodding... ...Later. She'd ask other questions later. Yeah, that was the best thing to do. |

...Oh, was that what she was asking? Shane felt himself relax a little, and just shook his head. "Abandoning, no. They'd kind of have to be close in the first place, but--never mind. Technicalities." The boy rubbed at the back of his neck, eyes wandering past Natsumi in an absent-minded way for a few seconds. "Don't worry about it. Asking, I mean. It's fine. I mean, it's good to know you care enough to ask in the first place." Better to know she also cared enough to be worried about asking, but Shane wasn't sure how to voice that without it sounding weird. "The rest of my family... well, yeah. I have one aunt on mom's side, none on dad's, the usual compliment of old folks on both. All here in America someplace, but they were mostly in different states to start with. Mom and dad went to college together and wound up landing jobs together and they packed off to Oregon when they were both hired, so... never really saw that much of the relatives. One or two visits and family reunions. Grandmom on mom's side was a cheek-pincher. It got pretty annoying." He chuckled a bit, and just shook his head, leaning his head back and trying to remember if there was anything else of significance about his relatives. There wasn't, though. Except-- "Older cousin, Kirstin, though," he said. "She went off and tried to be an actress. Didn't make the cut, and didn't do anything to cover for herself along the way... she, uh, works at a bar now. I keep in touch with her, a bit. She's very... cynical." What Shane didn't say--although he didn't really mind if Natsumi knew or worked it out on her own--was that Kirsten didn't just work at a bar; she worked as a dancer of the "adult" sort. Kirstin didn't actually hate the job, she'd just had the whole dreams come true idea stamped out of her by the iron heel of failure. The reason Shane decided not to say this... ...Well, there was just something intrinsically uncomfortable about mentioning that one's blood relative was a stripper. It was what it was, and Shane didn't have any special opinion about it, but at the same time, he didn't want to say it out loud, for reasons he wouldn't have been able to adequately translate into words. |

Yeah, of course, he wasn't that close to the rest of his family. Why had she been worried about that, again ? Of course he didn't care that much, he'd have shown it if he actually did care. Silly her, getting too worried about inane stuff like that... she didn't regret asking, though. She had no reason to - she'd seen a sign, and she'd acted accordingly. "Eh, you know... It kinda reminds me of what I wanna do. I'd like to make a good buck with my music, but I know that there's been thousands of folks before me that just leaped into the unknown and ended up, uh... Well, like your cousin. That's why I got plans to, y'know, study something else than music." she said, figuring out that this was as good a moment as any to bring back the conversation into a casual territory. "Unless I get hired to compose stuff. Wouldn't say no to composing stuff for shows or games, to tell the truth." she added, a small grin coming to her lips. |

...well, like your cousin. For a split second it occurred to Shane that he was glad he didn't have to worry about his girlfriend shooting for something unattainable like Kirsten had and then winding up dancing around a pole in some red-light district place. The thought passed as many thoughts do, and he nodded a bit, looking up at the sky with a bit of a scowl on his face. "People put so much romantic emphasis on following your dreams and being what you want to be," he said dubiously. "Like it's something everyone should do because everyone can do it. It kind of pisses me off, because not everyone can. Just as a numbers thing." Shane shrugged a bit, and then looked back at Natsumi, a vague smile working its way onto his face. "Wish I could say I had something particular I want to do, but I hope music works out for you. As for me, I'll probably wind up... ah... if I lived here I'd aim for the police. I'm pretty sure that'll be a problem in Japan, though. I don't know what I'm going to shoot for yet." |
