Kumiko had, during her younger years, awlays been a little girl who'd looked forward to the end of the year - well, even more than most kids, in any case. It meant holidays, it meant the greater part of the family being present, it meant celebrations and joy amongst people she knew she could count on. Harmony and peace, the two things she needed the most... Both provided by the company of these people she loved.

But not anymore - the end of the year didn't quite mean the same thing. A rift had grown amongst the members of this family - small and less small gurges everyone held in every family, grudges that had grown in importance and gravity as a perturbatory element had wrecked havoc amongst what had been a decently tightly-knit family. Not a perfect family, but a good one nonetheless - one worth keeping together.

That man. Eleven years after her husband had passed away from cancer, her grandmother had found that man - smooth, kind and funny at first glance, but callous, manipulative, confrontational and vulgar underneath it all. Oh, yes, he'd been nice to the blind girl all along, but it was because not being nice to the blind girl was a sure way to piss off the entire family - and even then, she's felt the absence of genuineness underneath it all, she'd been able to discern that he thought of her as nothing but an annoying little blind thing who took more efforts to take care of than she was worth.

Worst of all, he was intelligent.

Yet, she'd feared the possibility of her family drifting apart more than she'd felt revulsed by that man. Ad she'd tried to keep the family from drifting apart more than she'd felt revulsed by that man. And she'd tried to keep the family cemented with all she had in her, but that man was faster - and more importantly, more experienced - at this little game than she was, and he'd won in the end - he was now free to do whatever he wanted with the money the late Tetsu Itosu had left behind him to his spouse after his death. Her parents didn't understand why her grandmother would live with such a man, and that had led to indifference and cold resentment.

Indifference. What had led to the alienisation of her family had been cold indifference. They didn't care so much about what could have happened to each other anymore.

Such were Kumiko's thoughts as she was sitting on the school roof, on the last day before the holidays break rolled around. She'd spend the holidays with her parents, and that would be all - oh, yes, her parents were beyond happy that she'd managed to score eleventh (eleventh !) on her exams, and she could feel they were proud of their little girl. They'd make sure to give her a nice Christmas and New Year's Eve, because they knew that all of it affected her: but despite their efforts, it wouldn't be the same.

Perhaps they'd invite a few friends, like they did every year. They'd cook something that's smell nice and taste just as nice, and would probably look as nice for those who could see it. But it wouldn't be the same. She wasn't cool enough for the other kids - she couldn't play videogames or other things like that, she was just a bore for them...

Her usually neutral expression had turned into a frown as she turned these thoughts in her head. They... weren't so pleasant.

Yuuki had been feeling lightheaded during the whole week of finals. Not as bad as his worst migraines but a lingering sensation in his brain, moist likely something to do with all the events surrounding that time with Aoyama in the ruins and the freaking Heiho as he referred to it. Disturbing Mime would work as a moniker too since Shyster didn't say anything.

It felt as if his mind had been opened but to what Yuuki didn't know. Besides that, apparently, everyone's deepest psychological shit turned into to monsters in an underground facility on the edge of town. Mind opening, yes, but shouldn't be a lingering cause of head discomfort.

It was at times like these Yuuki sought out especially wide open spaces with some kind of view, so he trudged up all the stairs to the roof. He didn't come up here much but he didn't have work today and didn't feel like going home yet.

It wasn't a barren spot as he had anticipated. There was another girl up there. Kumiko Itosu of 2-2 if memory served, the blind one. Must be up here for the breeze if anything. He glanced her direction as he walked to the fence, coming to stand on the brick edge as he hung onto the links. Closest as you could get to look straight. Heights had never really bothered Yuuki.

From this vantage he looked out at the city, lost in his own thoughts. He sighed so loud that he immediately needed to inhale air back into his lungs.

She heard the footsteps of someone coming up the stairs, and focused on their pace, the sound this person's feet made when they hit the floor, whether the stroll was confident or not - no, this wasn't the gait of anyone she knew personally. "Hello." she greeted nonetheless, giving a small nod of the head in the direction she thought this person was.

"It's been quite long since we got some holidays, isn't it ?" she said - the blind girl jumped on the occasion to distract herself from the thoughts that populated her mind at the moment - even though the subject matter was ironically quite close to her thought's. "I think we all deserved some rest, honestly."

Yuuki turned at the greeting. Well, she had good hearing. Not that he personally knew anything about being blind.

"Hmpf," Yuuki grunted at the thought, "seems like it has." He noticed his voice was in a different tone than what his default speaking voice was custom to though the vibe was still the same. Had there been a knot in his throat he hadn't noticed?

"I don't think I'd ever get enou--guff rest." If Itosu could see Yuuki's face was turning pink with embarrassment. Of all the freaking times to have another voice crack! Yuuki was a Year 2 student, yet his voice acting up sometimes as if he was 13 or 14.

This person's voice sounded... strained, for some reason ? Well, people sometimes had strange ways of talking, so Kumiko didn't think too much of it all. "Well, I'm certain two weeks' worth of holidays can be enough to recharge one's batteries. It all depends on whether or not someone rests enough out of holidays, I suppose."

That was supposed to be a somewhat encouraging comment, with some advice underneath - sleep wasn't something so easy to get back when it was lost, and bad sleep schedules were hard to fix. Oh, it also seemed that the boy also had voice cracks, but that wasn't anything important either.

"Huh, recharged batt-eries..." Well this was just great. Voice locking into a higher register. With another heavy breathed sigh Yuuki stepped down from the fence.

"I would probably need an entire electrical overhaul to make that metaphor work." He sat on the other end of the bench. The holidays didn't seem that special anymore. Maybe once or twice when Yuuki had been a kid but the days carried no other significance now.

"What about you then," Yuuki squeaked. "Fun plans?"

She chuckled lightly at the boy's metaphor, but his next sentence made all pretenses of fun vanish from her mind. "Well, it's going to happen.... like it does every other year, I suppose. I will spend them at home, with my parents. What about you ?" she replied in a tone that she made as steady and genuine-sounding as she could, before giving the boy a small grin.

"Oh, how rude of me... I'm Kumiko Itosu. It's a pleasure to meet you." He might have already heard of her - she didn't exactly go unnoticed in the high school, that was for sure -, but introducing herself would take her mind offf the matter of holidays, at the very least.

Another one with no real plans. Not that Yuuki could blame her. "No real plans myself. There's only f--dad so we don't do much." A subconcious word swap.

Because hell, at this point with a voice cracked into being two degrees off from that voice, why not? "Inari," Yuuki replied, "nice to meet you too Itosu-san."

"Hmmm. I suppose that it's sometimes best to simply spend the holidays with the people you love... Simple pleasures of life, and all that." How untruthful did that feel in her own mouth. She hoped she'd get to enjoy that pleasure, but it simply wasn't within reach at the moment. She did notice the small slip, but didn't comment on it further.

"It's relaxing, isn't it ? The roof, I mean. Strange there aren't more people there."

Swallow, swallow but still nothing. The voice curse continued. When Yuuki wasn't trying to fix his voice or give alternate names to the blind student, he was focused on what she was saying. Unless he was off, did the conotation of those words seem off given her tone?

Perhaps she didn't fancy the sappy idea as much as she suggested. "Simple pleasures I guess," Yuuki repeated in the off voice, imagining what that would mean in his case. Perhaps a samurai movie marathon of father's favorites. Something made of pork for dinner, which was rarely eaten in the house.

"Just as well," Yuuki added in the off voice, "It's probably too cold for everyone else." Technically it was getting too cold for him too even with a jacket.
