As the conversation shifted back to Oriyama, she decided to do him a favor and spare him the attention, since just before then he seemed rather nervous with it. Instead, her eyes traveled back to the score sheets, hopefully going under the radar as she did so. From Chika's name, her gaze traveled down, as she remembered Shou was in the same class. Further and further down... 'Where is he...?' It seemed that her ex boyfriend had scored a stellar 26th place in the grid. "..." Hah. Saw that coming. Her expression twitched ever so slightly, yet she attempted not to display emotion towards that particular grade. It was her fault, and she knew it. |

Oriyama blinked a bit when Chika and Kyo somewhat mirrored each other as he stuttered through his words. He was crummy at reading people, but the way Kyo snapped from the bubbly air she had before to this was a pretty big leap in his eyes. It could have been coincidence. Maybe that was just how people looked when they were talked to. Oriyama wouldn't know; he spent a lot of time shifting his eyes out of direct eye contact. This was kind of a first and it was a bit awkward. "W-w-well uh... Definitely need to st-strike a balance. Kind of crazy. Th-th-this entire town, I mean. People uh... People deal with a lot." Oriyama sagged a bit more than he already did. It looked like he was wilting. He read a lot, lived on Bedlam as a lurker. Crazy things were always happening and he had the good fortune(?) not to get tangled in any of it. But it felt really bad not to have a hand in resolving things. "Uh... Yeah." Machi didn't seem to have anything to say on the matter, but well, she pretty much gave him a studying bible to live by, so... "Uh." ...He ran dry. He had caught the ebb of the conversation for a bit, but he had dropped something pretty heavy in conversation and now he was stuck. It wasn't a particularly new feeling. "Yeah, uh... good things exams are through. I'm ready for a change." |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Kyo followed Machi's eyes to the list as she faded out, and silently took note of the names there. She noticed Shou's name before it registered in her brain that Machi was looking at it. And then it was like: ....Ohhhh. Yeesh. What was going through Machi's head, Kyo wondered? Disappointment in her boyfriend? Maybe wondering if it was because Shou was still depressed about their break-up? Self-blame over the whole issue, maybe? Whatever it was, she decided to keep her mouth shut about it, and refocused on Oriyama, pretending not to notice. She almost didn't quite hear what Oriyama was saying in her distraction, however. "...Balance? Right, balance," she said, scratching at her hair. Lowering her voice a bit, she went on: "Not everyone has t' deal with this kinda thing day in and day out. Fightin' a losin' battle by night, and tryin' t' keep a normal life goin' by day. It's stressful, yeah?" "...Yeah." Kyo's eyes flitted to Chika, and the green-haired girl realized she had made a bit of a faux pas. While Kyo had been referring to Persona-user problems, the ruins and everything, the statement could just as easily have referred to Chika's life before Nagashima. But the red-haired girl seemed to come back from her moment of subdued... whatever it was, and just nodded. "I think I'm ready for a change, too," she said. "It'll be good t' move forward and see what the new year brings, won't it?" Kyo felt some tension loosen in her chest and grinned. "Hell yeah! I got like a great old bucket list o' New Year's resolutions t' go through, too. So let the new year come at me with all the forces o' the netherworld at it's back! I'll annihilate this new year single-handed!" And she punched a fist into the air between herself and the exam board to punctuate this statement. Chika stared dully at her friend and said, "Ain't a bucket list a list o' things t' do before you die, Kyo?" "Well, yeah, but I plan t' at least take care o' all my resolutions before that happens anyway, so... shut up! Grammar Nazi. Sheesh." |
