The woman crumpled under the hit, which she took low on her left side, but had the presence of mind to use the momentum to roll away, shrugging out of Benkei's grasp. She scrambled away on all fours, clambering into the driver's seat of the van. She started up the engine -- the keys had apparently been left in the ignition -- and reached to try to close the door. Her injured comrade had collapsed, the crossbow bolt in his stomach having been jarred and jolted enough by the attempted escape that he had probably suffered serious damage to his internal organs. The three attackers didn't hesitate. After all, if she was on fire, she couldn't aim, could she? They threw their molotovs -- two in lobbing arcs, while the one on the left went for more of a flat trajectory. That one would be easy to dodge, but might strike a building and spark a fire. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
"No, stop--!" Masumi protested immediately, when Hanako moved to chase after Etsuko. The woman stood up, but then immediately slumped back down when Seiji got there first, and put her head in her hands. She closed her eyes, and took a breath, and then another one. Tried to calm herself, and to tell herself that she shouldn't chase after Etsuko either. "Their leader..." the fortune-teller said through gritted teeth, eyes closed against the palms of her hands, "...was very insistent that they not hurt 'innocents.' He protested quite passionately when they... took Etsuko hostage. And they'll be able to sense either of you coming... Etsuko... hasn't awakened yet. She'll be safe." Another breath. "I hope she'll be safe..." And then she looked up, a mournful look in her eyes. "I... have some first aid things under the sink upstairs, but... I'm not sure if there's enough for burns this serious. You'll need to go to a hospital, Hanako-san..." --- Etsuko didn't jet straight in after Benkei. As soon as she neared, she sprinted into cover behind a parked car and crouch-walked around it, trying to flank the escape van as best she could. Sneaking around at night, this was familiar. She'd hoped she'd never have to again, but if the paltry skills she'd learned with Victor on the streets could be useful for something that didn't make her feel like a wad of gum on someone's shoe? She wasn't about to complain. When the molotovs were thrown there was no time to think--Etsuko wanted to scream out Maki's name, but she had seen the woman going for the van and if these people were looking to murder as many Persona-users as they could, then Etsuko knew they wouldn't hesitate to ram anyone if they had the chance. Etsuko sprinted out of cover, dashing for the door, and caught it with both hands before it could close. "Fuck, no!" And she swung around, leaping into the car, onto the woman's lap, swinging her arm--which was a little more muscled than most teenage girls' would have been--as hard as she could for the woman's jaw. That, however, was a distraction. What she really wanted to do was snatch at the key in the ignition with her other hand, turn the car off, and pull it from the ignition... if she could. And then chuck it out the door, if she got that far! That would solve the problem. |

"Suzuki-san, if they're willing to take hostages to get away, I don't think they care about that as much as the voice on the other end does." Seiji said, ever the bearer of optimism. --- "Fuckin' shit." It was a good summation of what had happened thus far. At that point the situation was hardly ideal for anyone involved. And this was before he noticed Etsuko's involvement. For the moment, his main concern was stopping their escape. The severity of the wounded man's injuries was even lost on him at that time. "Shit. We gotta get this asshole to a hospital and quick." And it was then that he noticed what Etsuko was doing. Unlike Benkei, Etsuko could have easily been in mortal peril. "Etsuko! What the hell?! Do you know how dangerous this is?" --- Maki had made herself quite clear, if this is what they wanted, of course she would oblige. When the Molotovs were thrown, they almost seemed to be coming her way at a leisurely pace. She fired at the one that was thrown directly at her as quickly as possible. Ideally the buckshot would have meant enough blowback of the flaming fluids to settle the matter then and there. But if it didn't. She was torn between attempting to reload or dealing with the other two. She elected to instead of preparing to fire once more than to carefully catch and throw back the other two. Sending them right back towards their senders. |

The woman grunted at the hit, but managed to keep a hold on both the key and the wheel. She was unable, as a result, to properly force Etsuko away from her. She had been shifting into drive when the girl had jumped in, and was unable to shift all the way. This meant that she had no idea which direction that they would head when she pressed the accelerator. However, the van -- while spacious -- was not meant to have two people in the driver's seat, and the accelerator was pressed quite forcefully. Etsuko and the woman would both be thrown forward by inertia, the smaller girl pinned between the woman and the steering wheel, and causing it to jitter this way and that. The horn blared loudly as a result of the pressure. The van rocketed backwards, veering wildly. Its back end was coming at Benkei at roughly fifty kilometers an hour. It was obviously going to strike a wall at some point, because of the narrowness of the alleyway it was spinning into. --- The Molotov that Maki shot exploded in midair, spreading glass shards, buckshot, and burning fluid in all directions. The hoods were using the distraction to scatter, their movements sluggish to Maki's accelerated perceptions. From behind her, she would no doubt hear the chaos of the out-of-control motor vehicle. |

"Guh--!" It was impossible for Etsuko to see who was out there, but she knew Benkei was behind the van. She took comfort in one thing amidst her panic: Masumi had told her, while explaining the sorts of things magic-users could do, that someone like Benkei could easily survive being hit by a car. That had been the immunity to physical damage the Black Hood leader had mentioned inside the house... She scrambled, and thrust her foot down behind her at the pedals. She just had to hit the pedal that this bitch wasn't already pressing down on, right? That would be the brake. ...What happened when you pushed down on the brake and gas pedals at the same time, anyway? Etsuko wasn't even in a position to realize this was a question worth asking. Everything was happening to fast, it was a swirl of struggling and shaking and all she could do was keep tugging at the ignition key and keep holding tight to the woman and if they managed to stop the car--the door had swung open all the wider for the backwards motion. If she couldn't get the key out of the ignition, maybe she could pull to the side and spill herself and the woman out onto the road... --- "I know that, just... tend to Hanako-san's injuries..." Masumi snapped, looking up from the couch. "I can't do anything! I can't do anything. If I go out there now the best I can do is either get killed or make a spectacle of myself by summoning a big, glowing lighthouse and shooting Hama spells at people! Be quiet, be quiet, just--be quiet!" The woman was shaking now, her hands, her fingers, her face a picture of panic. She was frozen and she didn't know what to do. She felt more powerless now than she had when she was looking death in the face. Faintly, she heard Benkei calling out Etsuko's name, and held her breath, straining her ears to try and hear more. There was a gunshot, as well... breaking glass? That had been breaking glass. A vehicle starting up and abruptly moving... |

Maki was again left with two choices now that the risk of no one or nothing being set aflame was gone. Easily she could have pursued them, but there were more pressing matters. It wasn't like they were going to go far Maki didn't doubt they were simply going to regroup to try another tactic against her. So she turned to the van, just in time to watch as Etsuko decided to try and initiate a crash of the van. Wonderful. "Etsuko! Be careful!" It was a bit late for that then but she still sprinted towards the Van in hopes of keeping the girl from being hurt. --- Benkei's concerns about the Van were more immedate what if it hit someone? Not him, specifically. That would have been very annoying but hardly fatal. The same couldn't have been said if the already seriously wounded Black Hood was hit by a runaway vehicle. So his first instinct was not to get himself out of the way. It was to drag that bastard who came to murder Masumi out of the way. He didn't give a damn about who was better than who or not making a martyr or any of that shit. Someone was going to get killed at this rate if he didn't do something, so he did. "Hey! Hey! Watch it or you'll run over your own guy! STOP GODDAMNIT!" Carefully, he tried to drag him into an alcove or other spot where he's likely to get wrapped around someone's axle. While he was there, he might as well have saw what he could have done about the arrow so he didn't die. --- Shooting was no longer an option for Maki. If a window presented itself thanks to Sukukaja, she fully planned to go for the driver's side door and forcibly drag the woman out. Stopping the van was almost as important as doing it without endangering Etsuko more than she already was. --- Seiji said nothing more. Despite his Persona being a renown doctor, he knew little of actual medicine. Hanako talked him though the first aid… |

Interestingly, pressing brake and gas at the same time resulted in the wheels spinning rapidly and not gripping the ground. The transmission fluid was unable to transmit power to the wheels, and the brake fluid began to boil. Boiling brake fluid, very interestingly, could not fulfill its function. So when the woman behind the wheel did her best to fling Etsuko to the side -- right, not left, as she had to hold on to the wheel -- releasing Etsuko's hold on the brake, she spun the wheel and attempted to straighten out. The van began to shoot backwards down the alleyway, knocking over trash cans and skidding off of the walls on either side of the alleyway. --- The black hoods did not exactly run: after all, they still had an injured comrade. Instead, each reached into his bandolier -- as they each had a bandolier of molotov cocktails across their chests -- and produced and lit the rag. Two advanced toward Benkei, the one with the radio pinned to his chest taking the lead. The bolt in the hood's stomach was in the right side, buried in his hip. Click. "Get back," the distorted voice said. "Release him!" The third produced another cocktail and lit the rag in that off of the first one, hurling the first toward Maki and then preparing to lob another one. |

"Ggh--" It was no good. Whoever this psycho-bitch was, she was bigger and physically stronger than Etsuko. Add to that the buffeting as the van moved in reverse, and it was impossible to get anything done. She couldn't get the keys, she couldn't stop the car-- Etsuko spilled over into the passenger-side seat, and scrambled around for purchase, blindly kicking out a warding leg to keep the woman from grabbing her or pushing her down. She managed to push herself around and actually look at what was happening. "If you keep goin' like that you're gonna hit someone! Or someone's house!" she barked. "Stop the fucking car!" ...Words like that always seemed to catch people's attention, didn't they? Etsuko hoped it would. Although from her it sounded slightly exaggerated, a little overplayed, and that probably didn't matter at all to the woman in black because Etsuko chose that moment to make a wild snatch for the gear-shift. What would happen if you shifted into park while already in motion? Unless the woman stopped the car in time or stopped Etsuko from hitting the gear shift, they might just find out the answer to that one tonight, too. |

"And what?!" He demanded. clearly far too tired for any of this shit. He stood up and pointed to the man. "Dude's got a fucking arrow in his stomach, so unless one of you assholes can stop the bleeding now and make sure he's going to get to a hospital now I think you hold off on trying to murder more women and kids until you know he's gonna pull though!" Eh, who gave a fuck? They were going to try and kill him one way or another. He didn't run half though the backstreets to watch someone die like a dog in a ditch, even if was a Black Hood. Of course, if it got them through that quicker and they had someone who could, he'd have stood aside and gladly let them take care of it. After that? Shit, he'd even be fine fighting again if they really had their dumbass hearts set on that. --- Behind her? A potential car accident that might involve a young woman she has a deep interest in the safety and well-being of. Also? Apparently somewhere one of the Black Hoods was seriously injured. Ahead of her, a more immediate concern of the pair of Molotov Cocktails being thrown their way. It was just as simple a matter to catch it and set it down somewhere where a fire was unlikely to happen. Quickly, carefully, and without dropping her gaze from the hoods. She had to admit, there was validity in Watanabe's line of thinking. As important as actually capturing a Black Hood was to put a stop to the killings, it did them little good to capture a dead one. She prepared to withdraw, and motioned for Etsuko. "Get out of the van, Etsuko, we're letting them go!" If they kept resisting then, they'd just succeed in getting Etsuko hurt, or worse before anything else. |

The van reached the street, and the woman at the wheel made a snap decision, pulling a hard right on the wheel, which -- when reversed -- translated to a hard left in the direction they were heading. The vehicle rose up on two wheels, and jittered precariously for a moment before slamming back down with the sound of shock absorbers blowing out. This should force the young woman trying to wreck the van away from the gear shift, though it might cause her injury due to the fact that she wasn't buckled in. The woman behind the wheel didn't have any sort of restraint either, and nearly fell from her seat, causing the van to wobble dangerously. "If you don't want both of us to die I need you to not fuck with anything," the woman shouted. --- The two hoods hurled their payloads at Benkei, ignoring his exhortation. The reasoning for why should have been fairly simple: in their eyes, he was a monster, and was currently attempting to take one of their number capture under the pretense of providing medical care. They had yet to be provided with any reason to believe otherwise. They moved in fast and low, attempting to snatch their comrade away from Benkei and his questionable ministrations. The third hood lobbed his other molotov in an arc. Click. "Retreat as soon as you've secured the wounded." |
