Much happened rapidly even before the threat was registered. In Seiji's case, he noticed the moving target, and used the moment of hesitation when she bumped into the table to line up and take a shot at the woman. In another room Hanako was a bit to involved to just stop, as the two she was fighting surely wouldn't. She jerked her head to one side and used her free hand to try and force the makeshift flamethrower's arc of fire right at the face and chest of the one who tried to stab her. His knife hit, but do to her actions, Somewhere off target, a little high, a little closer to her spine. She barely noticed the pain on her back in light of the fact that she didn't completely evade the flame. The right side of her face stung, the familiar, sensation of burning. Sharp pains, dull pains, She gasped for air and realized her hair was on fire too. Her free hand moved to swat it out, the hand with the knife tried the plunge the blade into flamethrower's neck. --- Upstairs, Benkei paused, his hands up. Yeah, he heard the radio that time. Well fuck you too, asshole. He held up his hands and stepped aside. "Shit, you think we don't wanna live? Look." Alright, the fight was over, as far he was concerned, it was time to stop this shit. "I'm gonna take Etsuko, and Masumi? You're going to take the gun from his head and everybody's gonna walk away. Alright?" He slowly walked up the stairs and planned to take the girls hand. Then they were going to leave, and go fuck themselves as far as Benkei was concerned, as long as the residents of that place were alright and Masumi didn't have to be forced to kill somebody. --- In the mean time, Maki found the right frequency. That was Watanabe's voice. Faint, as if overheard though a headset. He was referring to both Etusko and Masumi. She moved a bit quicker towards there. Her gun was ready and she looked out for any likely vehicle that could have transported so many at once, or possibly several vehicles at once. Getaway drivers seemed likely. |

The woman was on the other side of her companion from Seiji -- her right arm looped under his left, supporting him -- and the bolt struck the man in his midsection. He folded up, legs going limp. "Ah, shit!" the woman squawked. She glanced toward the window, and then hefted the larger man as best she could running through the back door and heading down the alleyway. Her movements were erratic, mostly due to the limp form of the man she was pulling. She reached over and took hold of the radio pinned on the other man's breast. --- Benkei's assailant dropped his weapon and scrambled back, hoping to make himself less of a threat. The man behind Hanako jerked back, trying to avoid the blast of fire, falling into the busted front door. The hamstrung man continued trying to blast her with fire, realizing that his options were to kill her or be killed, himself. The knife man's eyes flickered back up toward Masumi, then toward Benkei. "Fat chance. Give us an exit and then I'll let the girl go. Call off the bleach-blonde over there and let us get to the door, I let her go." He looked about ready to speak again, but was interrupted. Click. The voice that spoke through the radio was crisp and clear. Female, mezzo-soprano, slightly nasal. Her voice was pressured, as if she was keeping a tight control on things: "Renji's bleeding out. Need evac. Now." Click. The distorted voice spoke, it's intonation calm: "Backup on its way. Do not use names." Click. The woman again, her control was now breaking: "Some motherfucker shot Renji in the stomach with a crossbow! I don't give a shit about procedure!" |

Masumi stiffened, but kept her eyes on the man who had Etsuko. She didn't even look at Benkei, although when he arrived her eyes flitted in his direction for a split second--she obviously wanted to. But this was all getting out of control, out of control--"HANAKO!" she shrieked. "STOP! IF YOU DON'T STOP NOW I WILL DEFEND THEM!" Etsuko snorted back a derisive laugh, keeping herself perfectly still. She could feel the injury in her side burning all the harder, bleeding, had it opened more? Probably, that had been a pretty rough jump to make. "'We're not like them,' he says," she muttered. "Masumi's the only one here who's got her head on right and she's the one y'all came t' kill. How fucked-up is that?" The girl turned her head slightly, trying to get a look at whatever radio device this guy was wearing--the direction from which the voices came from, anyway. "You. Whoever y'are. I ain't been in this town long, so I don't really get what's goin' on. But--" (For a moment, what composure she'd managed to force broke, and her voice cracked a bit.) "--but I don't mind playin' hostage t' let y'all get out, if it means you'll stay away from Masumi. Y'hear that? Go ahead and use me as your--ah, 'human shield,' that's what she called me, right? And stockhold-whatever. Psh. As if they'd ever use me that way. Fuckin' idiots." Masumi's eyes moved from the man to Etsuko. Concern and fear seeped into her features. "Etsuko-chan, are you sure?" "Yeah, plenty sure," she said, her voice quivering a bit. "Let's get this over with. I think I might be bleedin' out, too." The fortune-teller stood frozen for a bit, and then pulled back her gun, leveling it at the ceiling. "...Everyone, stop fighting. Let them leave. Hanako, let them go. This has gone more than far enough. If any of you are seriously injured... I can heal you. My power lets me do that. At least let me stop the bleeding so you can get proper medical attention." |

He didn't bother to recock the crossbow, he had the bokken ready to try and attack them, but they were already beating a hasty retreat before he could have kept up. Probably a bad idea to chase them down in case they had some trick up their sleeves. More importantly though Hanako was in a real mess, and even from there he could have told the person she was trying to savage would have died at that rate. It was stupid, but he stepped inside and used Media on the two of those, and Etsuko, and Masumi too. As far as he concerned they came there to prevent people from dying, even the so-called 'wrong' people. "Senpai what the fuck are you doing?!" In truth, the fact that a hostage situation was in progress was lost on Hanako, the same for Seiji's protest. She was locked in a mortal struggle with a loathsome thing that would have killed her or those she cared about if given a chance. No better than a Shadow. …no, even worse those things only attacked people that were taken to them, they never attacked them in the streets or slipped into their homes in the dead of the night with murder on their minds. The demand finally got to her, even though the haze of more fire. She looked up to Masumi. Incredulous, and curiously completely untouched by Seiji's healing despite it was obvious how she was was treated with the media just the same. "…the ones who'd murder people in the streets, burn them alive and beat them and leave them to die and…who came to kill you?" She took a deep breath, and realized she'd been stabbed in the back, and seriously. "…fine. If that's what you want. But what happens when they come after you next time? Or the next person?" She shoved away the piece of trash that tried to burn her to death again and tried to climb to her feet. Benkei stepped back and to the side. He made it clear no one was to bar their way. "There, there's your fucking exit. Now let Etsuko go and get the fuck out." --- Maki meanwhile had decided to move into a position now, the car was left, the last information she had gotten was their general retreat She had her gun at the ready and fully expected to find some sort of hostage situation. What exactly went on in the house was lost to her, and she imagined the same was true of most parties inside. She wasn't aware the Black Hood's support's range of detecting users was far greater than she'd suspected yet. Edited by Nonsequitur, Mar 5 2014, 02:28 PM.

"Go," the knife man said, gesturing to his compatriots with a flick of his head. He grabbed the back of Etsuko's night gown, twisting to get a grip on the material, and began to move her with him toward the exit. The other black hoods moved ahead of him, fanning out. When he reached the front door, he released her with a light shove, and turned to run. They scattered in different directions. --- On the other side of the townhouse, the woman and her injured comrade hustled away, turning down an alleyway, and heading out of view. Very soon after, a windowless van with three normal tires and one spare rounded the corner. It was late enough, in a quiet enough neighborhood, that this was most likely related to what was going on in Masumi's home. |

Masumi didn't bother answering Hanako's incredulity, feeling no need to justify herself to the injured girl. She followed slowly and steadily as the man took her daughter away, snapping, "Don't be so rough, she's injured!" as he tugged her by the back of her sweatshirt toward the door. Etsuko kept herself as limp and cooperative as she could, but hissed as the rough motion tugged her clothes across the bleeding cut in her side. All she could do was try to resist the urge to struggle and let herself be pulled along; in the end, she was shoved back into the house and barely managed to keep her feet when she did. The pain and the blood loss were making it hard to balance. Neither by themselves would have been a problem yet, but together... "Etsuko-chan!" Masumi cried, her composure breaking the moment Etsuko was free. She ran past Benkei, past Hanako, and over to where Etsuko stood clutching at her injured side and shaking, eyes closed and head bowed. Masumi eased back the hammer on her revolver and set it aside on the kitchen counter, then took her adopted daughter gently by the arm and held a hand up to the girl's side, a gentle blue light of Dia working over the injury. "This way, come with me, just sit down..." she said softly. "I'll patch you up, but take it easy. Etsuko-chan, you were very brave, very--" Masumi looked back sharply, as if suddenly realizing something important. A look of worry crossed her face. "Officer Yamada is out there!" she said to the others. "It might still be possible to apprehend some of them..." As she guided her daughter to the sofa, her own muscles loosened and almost went limp, all of the energy draining from her body at once. "...You all came... just in time. I'm--I don't even know what to say. I was ready to think I wasn't going to make it out alive, and you all--" Masumi's voice broke a bit, and she glanced through the wall in the direction of where she sensed Maki's Persona, clearly torn between a need for support and the knowledge that there was still time to pursue some of her attackers. She looked to Hanako. So clearly injured. To Benkei, who'd come to her rescue like a knight or a hero. Looked out to where Seiji was. She had no desire to put any of these three in further danger. "...I'm..." "You siddown." And Etsuko, with sudden energy and a snappish, irate manner, took Masumi by the arms and turned her around, so that the fortune-teller's back was to the sofa instead, and then, shoved the woman down into it. "Masumi, your hands're shakin'," Etsuko said evenly. "Calm down." "R-right..." Masumi agreed with a faint nod, letting herself be forced onto the couch. Her house was halfway in shambles now. Broken window and broken door and signs of fighting everywhere. A scorchmark on the ceiling where a spray of flaming aerosol had very nearly set off a catastrophic fire, with only the winter cold to prevent that spark from becoming a conflagration. This all could have gone so very badly, Masumi thought. She found herself staring again at Hanako, and then at her own hands. She didn't have strong enough magic to heal those burns. The healing magic that Seiji boy had used hadn't healed them, either. She couldn't do a damned thing. Couldn't negotiate, couldn't fight them off herself, couldn't even keep her daughter out of danger. |

"Stop where you are!" It was probably by dumb luck, or more likely that there was one obvious route for approaching Masumi's home from behind that was both direct and discreet enough to be ideal, but she approached the retreating and injured Hoods before they had a clean getaway. She made note of the van, model, likely years, color and the detail of the missing and replaced tire. There was little in the way of ambiguity about how she intended to stop them, she leveled her short-barreled shotgun at the two on foot. --- Seiji came out of the kitchen, cautiously in case someone came back.At once, his attention turned to the girl he came in with. "Hanako, what the hell was that?" There was no effect of the healing on Hanako. Of course he tried again. With no effect. He scowled and looked over her injuries as he tried again, with an equal lack of success. With their presence gone, Hanako could have relaxed a bit. She thought about things more clearly, as well as their consequences. The realization of what just happened was a worrying one. She was willing to kill and die there and damn the rest. To say it was a serious setback to her belief she was improving herself was an understatement. "I don't…I mean I know why we came here but I just got lost…" It was all she could offer. Any other talk stopped short when Masumi suddenly pronounced the presence of another user. "Wait, Officer Yamada? That way, right?" Benkei's first thought was to do something for Ito after her injuries proved resistant to magical healing. The new revelation challenged the priority of that one. "Shit…I'll be back soon." No time to rest. No time to even make sure they're all okay. Not even a moment to spare to reassure the woman who'd quickly become so important to him in so little time. He'd have to worry about that after he'd seen this incident though to the end. That meant rushing out after the last stragglers of the Black Hoods. It would have gone a long way to stop the killings if they captured one or more. |

The acronym "FUBAR" had come to describe the situation, and that meant it was time to get the hell out. Still there was someone with a shotgun blocking their path. The man and woman drew up short, locking eyes with Maki. It looked as if they were boxed in -- two unarmed individuals against a trained markswoman with a shotgun. Of course, backup had already been dispatched, and wasn't that far away. Click. "No strengths, no weaknesses, Class C. Eliminate her!" If Maki didn't notice the electronically distorted voice, she might notice the orange light of three freshly-lit molotov cocktails lighting the walls to either side of her. The enemy was coming from behind. |

Masumi watched Benkei go, biting her inner lip to stop herself from calling after him, Wait, please come back! She wanted comfort, she wanted the security of knowing he was safe here with her instead of out there fighting them... mostly she just wanted this whole situation to be done and over with. But she couldn't move. She couldn't do anything but sit here. Etsuko, seeing this, clicked her tongue and jumped up, rubbing at her previously-injured side. Masumi half-stood, reaching for the girl's hand, but she was too fast, too spry; she jumped up on the table and over it, cleanly avoiding Masumi's grasp. "I'm just gonna go keep an eye on things, yeah?" she said. "That guy on the radio went batshit when the other dude grabbed me like that. 'We're not like them, we don't hurt innocents.' Maybe by bein' there I can, eh... throw a little wrench in things!" "Etsuko-chan, don't talk crazy-talk," Masumi said in a tired voice. "Don't you leave me behind here, too!" Etsuko frowned, stopping in place for a few seconds as she moved toward the door. "...I don't exactly wanna go," she said. "But Hanako's right, right? What happens next time they come after us? ...What happens when they come after us and I've actually got a Persona by then? I don't plan on sittin' here waitin' for 'em t' kill me, or you." And then the girl, ignoring Hanako and Seiji completely, sprinted out the door, after Benkei. Masumi almost let out a cry, but then clapped her hands over her mouth. If she screamed Etsuko's name, she would let them know Etsuko was running after them. That would put the girl in danger. She looked toward Hanako, and then toward Seiji. That was when she realized something important: Hanako's Persona felt... really, really faint somehow. Why was that? ...But they had still known, they'd still known she was a user, and--oh--oh she just couldn't, she couldn't focus on piecing it all together right now! Etsuko and Benkei were... |

"Wait, I'm coming wi-" Hanako got up, and was set down by Seiji's hand firmly on her shoulder. "No, you aren't Senpai. You're injured enough and if you get hurt worse in your condition, where would you be?" She would have responded, but he gave her no time to. "Possibly in a hospital room again because of those sons of bitches. Maybe even dead. Now just sit down and wait." Seiji cocked and rearmed the crossbow he brought and set it aside. "Suzuki-san? Do you have a first aid kid or something? We're stuck dealing with her burns and a nasty puncture wound the hard way." He was on edge, and obviously so. His eyes darted from all the exists and he kept scanning for anything. There was no telling if they were to come back. Better to expect anything. --- "You may consider yourselves under arrest." Maki said plainly and with her usual severe fashion. In her past experience, this seldom worked. Oh, yes of course, more had come, and the distorted voice over the radio made it clear they intended to kill her. She turned her attention from the injured man and the woman just long enough to see what she was up against. "Conspiracy to commit murder, breaking and entering, unlawful disruption of public communications, and now resisting arrest and assault on a police officer. Did I get everything?" Well, there was kidnapping, but she didn't see nor overhear that pat. She was in a bad position, and while killing them all, to the very last devil. was definitely an option, especially given her enhanced reflexes and reaction time thanks to the Sukukaja spell, she didn't want it to come to that. If only she had some sort of backup… "Fucking murdering son of a bitch!" The path was fairly linear and with the right direction he came running quickly. He was fairly out of breath, but still had enough energy to try and tackle the woman and at least bar their clean get away. As far as Maki was concerned? Benkei's presence was a godsend. She'd turned her gun from them to the approaching 'backup' and made her intent clear. "Stop. Or I will shoot. No one is murdering anyone tonight!" Weapon was trained at the newcomer Hoods, and her finger hovered over the trigger. No matter the type, Maki simply loathed vigilantes for precisely the situation she found herself in. |
