Machi was all smiles that day, despite her situation. The exam results were being posted later! The girl had kept a consistent first place score up until then, and seeing that mark always cheered her up. She had honed her studious skills for years on end, ever since grade school. Hours and hours upon studying if necessary, regular exercises, always making sure she understood everything, occasionally checking materials ahead of time... It always payed off! She had kept her grades at their maxed potential for the sole reason of wanting to enter a good college. Despite the recent switch on future career focus, her final goal did not change at all. She just wanted to be able to get into wherever the hell she wanted. Recommendations weren't a problem, nor was money. Grades were everything to her. Unfortunately, she had to wait until lunch time. The results would be posted near the cafeteria for everyone to see. There probably would be a sea of people by the time she got there... ...Or not, since she seemingly was all packed up and ready to go a good five minutes before the last class of the morning ended. As soon as the teacher mouthed the words 'class dismissed', she was out the door, as if a dog to a bone. "..." ... '...What?' The girl actually had to do a double take as her gaze flew by the names listed in the 3-2 sheet. Her name wasn't in the top spot. How was that even possible?! The girl felt her happy expression freeze, as it became pure plastic. Her brain didn't register who was in the first position, as her eyes reluctantly darted directly to the next name on the list. Sure enough, it was her own. Second place. Second place. Ooooooooo, I wonder how hard he'll choke you now~ The Shadow's taunt went unheard, and Machi's right eyebrow very slightly twitched. Second?! She was a winner. No one ever remembered the second place of things. This was unacceptable! At last, after regaining a modicum of composure, she made herself look up to see who was the jerk who took the first spot - surely illegally, of course! - away from her. It was some Hanako Ito? "..................................................." Well, now you know not to give her your notes? How... How could this be? Had she accidentally shirked responsibilities to herself and focused solely on Hanako's notes while she was in a coma? Were her own lame in comparison? Had she forgone studying much during that time? She didn't even notice how pale she'd gotten as her gaze rapidly switched between the two names. |

Exams were going to be posted that day. Hanako wasn't exactly looking forward to it. She studied with all she had, but she probably lost too much time in the hospital to catch up. Still she might as well have just got it over with. She approached the board and offered her friend a smile, though it faded quickly. "Machi-chan?? What's the matter?" Something was bothering her, that's for sure. Given where they were, the most likely reason why was the test rankings. She started with number one, where she expected to find Machi's name but… "No, that's got to be some kind of mistake…" Seriously? There's no way she got a higher grade than Machi, much less displaced her from the number one spot. "Huh, I'm going to go complain about this." If it was a joke, it wasn't funny… |

Goichi Goda wasn't really expecting much of this board. Truth be told, the last times he'd checked for his exam score his name hadn't even been on the roster - he'd had to go track down his teachers and find his exam score out (always distressingly average anyways) in private. He walked to the scores with the air of a man not expecting a whole lot, and squinted, peering at the rows of names and scores with disinterest. He checked, methodically and thoroughly, every name in turn, looking for Goda Goichi. He checked every row, not even stopping when he was out of the third years and into the seconds - perhaps they'd misplaced his name this year, instead of simply forgetting to put it up. Still nothing. He sighed. This year, he didn't think he even wanted to go find out what it was - he knew he didn't do dismally, which really was enough for him, and spun on his heel to leave. Mid-turn, he spotted Machi. Goda's face immediately turned a non-flattering shade of crimson red, and he exhaled a breath that didn't seem to flow entirely as natural human exhalation should. She was with Hanako Ito, one of her best friends (and a very strange girl), and both of them looked distraught. Why? They were looking in the direction of the Top Ten, the fabled few. Anyone who got their name up there should be ecstatic, right? Curiosity overwhelmed his awkwardness, and for the first time he could remember in his school career, he approached the two of them, hands in his pockets. "Machi-..." Goda paused, wondering if he should use a familiar like -chan in front of other people. He really didn't know if that would cause some kind of embarrassment for her (mostly for him) so he elected to pretend as if he was cut off by surprise by peering at the same spot Hanako and Machi were looking. "Huh. Hanako-san in first, Machi-san in second." Goda shrugged. Impressive, he supposed. "Nice. What's the problem? Both of you did really well." |

Oh look, the -chan's gone! Wonder what you did this time~ It was harder and harder for her to keep composure. Machi's hand clenched into a fist ever so discreetly, and its knuckles turned white from the pressure applied. She didn't look at either of her friends, crimson gaze glued to the dreaded results. Her eyebrow twitched again as Goichi spoke further, that time quite noticeably. What was the problem? The question alone ignited pure rage within her. She wanted to level the school grounds for taking away her hard-earned grade-- Think about it for a second. She blinked, but obeyed Ganga. Why? Why had the grade been lower than usual? There was nothing she did different from what she used t-- '--Oh...' There you go. Of course. During Hanako's coma, Machi only ever got to study the subjects they had together due to the notes. She went and took extra classes to cover Hanako's subjects as well. As far as the ones she had on her own went, well... ... "...It's correct." She muttered in defeat. Not even glancing at Hanako, she placed a hand on her friend's shoulder, and squeezed. "Congratulations, Hana-chan." She then proceeded to hastily walk off the area, still quite pale, aiming towards the tea ceremony club's room without a word. She needed to relax. Her day was rapidly being plummeted to oblivion... |

To say Hanako didn't quite follow what was going on would have been an understatement. She worked hard, and she expected not to do terribly. That said, seeing her name at the top of the class rankings was almost surreal. No, almost nothing. It was surreal, she felt like she was swimming. She was snapped back to reality by Machi's touch, and her congratulations. Wait, no, why's she giving up so easily? That had to be an error, right? She always did better than Hanako in those sorts of things, that's just how it was… 'Think for a second: What was different this time?' She was attacked, and Allan and Shou and… …the whole time she was gone, it was Machi who kept notes for her. When the realization hit, it might as well have done so literally, there was a painful tightness to her chest as she turned and watched the blonde leave. 'Don't go after her. She clearly wants to be left alone, and if you go after her making a big production, you'll probably just make her feel worse. Just don't forget you're only on top because she carried you. …you'll think of some way to make it up for her later.' … She took Medusa's advice, with a sigh, she decided to just step back so she didn't obscure the board for others that wanted to see. "It's…unexpected, is all, Goda-san. I don't really deserve to be in the top spot." It would have just been rude to ignore him. She almost did accidentally, it was beginning to be too much at once for Hanako to bear. |

Goda breathed out a sigh. Deserve? Who was anyone to say what they did or did not deserve? Then, he remembered. There was a long stretch of the school year where Hanako had been absent, hadn't there? He furrowed his brow at the realization. His brain attempted to connect these two facts into a cohesive whole, but all he was getting was vague suggestions, hints that his brain couldn't quite compile. He turned to Hanako, then to the boards, then to her again. He wondered just -how- to ask the questions forming in his mind in a polite way. Socialization didn't come easily to him, especially not to girls, which, his class seemed to be full of. "Hanako-san, I seem to remember..." Goichi trailed off, still halfway through thinking his question out. "...I seem to remember you were absent for a while this year... does that have anything to do with this?" He added quickly, "I-if I may ask. I d-don't mean to be rude, of course." He looked idly towards the direction Machi left in. She probably went... to that tea club room? Place? The room her club used. She was in there a lot. What did they even do there? Like, was it a tea-tasting thing? He shrugged those thoughts away. Socialization came hard to him, but he knew he'd have to go after her, someone would have to go after her, if there was any chance of saving her mood. Perhaps with a little information from Hanako (they were good friends... weren't they?) he'd be better prepared. Edited by Sumitomo, Feb 12 2014, 06:50 AM.

Within less than a minute, Machi had disappeared into the tea ceremony club room, and slid the door close. She let out a deep sigh, trying to organize her thoughts, before glancing over at the small kitchen area within the room itself. She needed to relax. Calm down. The girl tried to grab a cup, but her hands proved to be shaking a tad too much, so she put it down. She deserves it, you know. 'I know that! But...' But nothing. It doesn't matter anymore anyway. It's a nice parting gift, and you already know you're in Kyoto University. "..." She let out another sigh - that time, of relief. Ganga always knew what to say, for some reason. She let the anger wash away. Second place... Maybe it wasn't that bad. Plus, Hanako got to be happy. A little smile actually appeared at the thought, and her nerves calmed down at last. What's the worst her dad could do about it, choke her again? Just kick him in the nuts! |

"Yeah, yeah, that's true, Goda-san. The whole time I was unwell? Machi-chan kept notes for me so that's why I say I don't really deserve it." She smiled affiably, despite how he was nervous at the prospect. "No, it's not rude, it's fine." It was a perfectly valid. But she was still so disoriented that she hadn't any idea what to do. With going after machi out, her choice was either to just awkwardly leave or… find something else to do with her time than just stand and fret. "Goda-san, I don't think we've ever spoken before. I'm sorry it took so long in the year before I did." She still wanted to complain to her teacher about the rankings, but later. It seemed she only ever talked to two or three people in her own homeroom, that wasn't good. |

Goda pondered that. It was a touching act. He knew nobody who knew him or liked him enough to even consider taking notes for him in a coma. Loneliness drifted by him, brushed a hand against his shoulder, and he shivered, briefly closing his eyes to the world around him. Most people shield themselves from what bothers them deep down pretty effectively, but every so often, it slips past all your defense lines and reminds you just where you stand with yourself. Goda sighed. "Y'know, what I think Hanako-san?" Goda said, looking at her with a friendly, but distant smile, "I think, when you got someone willing to do something like that..." He waved a calloused, pale hand at the tables. "You could place first, last, middle, whatever. Doesn't matter. When you got friends, shit like this is..." Another pause. Goda looked back at Hanako with the same happy-tinged-with-sad expression. "Doesn't even matter. I'd trade first place for a good friend any day. I think that's what Machi did, but she doesn't realize the value of the trade, y'know?" "I think we should talk to her. More importantly, you should talk to her." Goda stated. "She hangs out in what, the tea room?" Not really waiting for an answer, Goda began to trek towards a room he'd never thought he'd enter for any reason. Tea Ceremony was as alien and foreign to him as marine biology or advanced electronic principles. He expected Hanako to follow, banking on her strong relationship. He probably wouldn't do Machi much good, but him and Hanako would have a chance. He knocked on the sliding door delicately, with a single finger. "Machi-chan?" |

The heiress closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and once reopening them she set the cup back in its respective cabinet. It was okay. Machi regained her composure, her muscles relaxing slightly within her trained stance. In hindsight, she had been quite rude to just ditch her friends like she did. Machi decided to move back towards the entrance of the room, so to leave and greet her friends once more. However, just as she was about to slide the door open, there was a light tap on its surface, along with a familiar voice calling for her specifically. "...?" She slid the door open just after letting a certain smile cross her lips, only to see Goichi standing there. Barely, Machi managed to hide a feeling of surprise. "Goichi-kun? My apologies for leaving so suddenly." |
