Not a manipulative loon. Really.

As the young man in the dark coat navigated the back alleys of Nagashima, the dimming light of the sun caused him to smile. As the last rays began to peek through the buildings, he pulled his hood back, revealing a head of long white hair, and skin almost as pale. Stopping, Ryu leaned back, and watched the stars begin to appear in the heavens. From the next alley over, someone screamed. "ARGH! A GHOSH! Ish all PALE AND CREEPY!". A drunken hoboish sort went stumbling away The young albino paused, sucked in a breath, and pinched his nose. Clearly, an eloquent and articulate rebuttal was called for here. "God Dammit." Swearing felt better, though. Pulling the hood back up to avoid further shenanigans, he continued on his way. Heading toward a more actively crossed street meant that he had to cover up a bit, if he wanted to avoid being gawked at by all and sundry. This town was rather odd, though. He had been passing a sidestreet a few weeks ago and heard someone getting mugged. As he walked away, he noticed around 3 different teenagers sprint in, and the sounds of punching and other odd noises began echoing out. This had started to get odd about the 4th time it happened. A screamed echoed through the night. This was a common occurrence in the backstreets, so much so that those who prowled to right society's wrongs recognized this one as too drunk and not quite frightened enough to be worth their time. Shortly thereafter, a scruffy hobo-ish drunk sprinted past the very same dark-coated young man he'd called a ghost not five minutes before. He was shortly followed by all two hundred centimeters of Tomoe Arai, still in her work clothes with the black-and-violet motorcycle jacket zipped up against the cold. She pounded after the drunk, fists clenched and face red. "I'll show you an ogre! Get back here and say that to my face, yeh drunken son of a bitch!" She skidded to a stop and looked both ways down the intersection, but the hobo had already scurried off like a rat into its hole. Tomoe scowled after him and struck a nearby wall with her fist in frustration. "Bastard." It was only then that she noticed the high school kid a few yards away. Her cheeks colored for an entirely different reason. She rubbed her sore fist and awkwardly cleared her throat, not meeting the guy's eye. "Uh...Hi. Nice night, huh?" The return of the screaming hobo was odd . The tall girl that came charging after him was simply an amusing bonus. Ryu paused in his walk to observe this, and was quite surprised when the hobo's "Ogre" actually put a bit of a crack in the wall. Not much of one, this was true, but there definitely was a bit more dama- Oh, wait, she was talking to him. "Yes, it is, I suppose." Oh wonderful. One of the few people that actually gets past the Hekmatyar look and talks to you, and you're as verbose as a gargoyle. Nice job. Feeling that he should say something further to clear the obviously awkward air, Ryu continued. "I.. wouldn't care too much about what he says. By his definition, I'm a ghost. Fairly sure I haven't been violently murdered and cast adrift soul-wise, though." As he said this, he pulled his hood back, figuring keeping it up would make him look rather rude. It was only until about a beat after this that he took a look at what he had done from another perspective. Pulling down a dark, peaked hood, revealing his previously partial obscured face, while making a crack about murder. He was going to get arrested. AGAIN. It wasn't so bad, the local cops were starting to remember his name. |

Tomoe gave a forced chuckle and shook out her hand, where the knuckles were already beginning to bruise. Dude was right, of course. No harm no foul when it came to winos. Still rankled, though. 'Ogre' was one of many things she'd been called in middle school, before she ditched the sailor skirt and taught the idiots who not to insult. She glanced down right about the time the guy in black lowered his hood. What a contrast that made, the pale truth of him against dark clothes, especially in the shadows between night and the street lamps. Tomoe could see how a liquor-hazed nitwit would take him for a ghost. For her, the combination rang familiar bells. Alabaster skin, snow-white hair...huh. "A ghost, are yeh?" She smirked, propping her fist on her hip. "Well then. All we gotta do is find my old roomie the Vampire Princess and we'll be the back-ally monster club. We can form a band, haunt warehouses, scare the piss out of a few drunks. Fun, yeh?" She gave the guy another once-over, eyebrow raising once it registered that yes, this was definitely a high school kid, walking alone at night in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Nagashima. "You sure a kid yer age oughta be out at night in this part of town? Ain't gonna look too good. People'll think you're one of 'em weirdos in the rubber masks playin' Batman." |

He tried to maintain his calm demeanor. Really, he did. But the "Back Alley Monster Club" comment caused Ryu to snort in a very undignified manner. After chuckling for a moment, he managed to respond. "Admittedly, that would be amusing. I suspect that might not do wonders for our social lives." Right, like I have one of those. I'm talking to a college student in a back alley. The albino was also a bit intrigued by the "Vampire Princess" mentioned. Was there another Albino around here? Interesting. It was a very large city, but being completely void of melanin was not a common trait. The girl managed to follow this up with a string of rather confusing comments. Shaking his head, Ryu admitted "I did not understand a word of that. Batman a crack about my ears or something? And anyway, you can't be that much older than I am, why are you here?" The snicker in the next sentence was stifled, but there. "Your hobby punching drunk hobos or something?" |

Tomoe's smirk widened. Kid was relaxing. Not bad. She knew plenty of guys with a decade on him who would've stammered their excuses and taken off by now. Still, he was just a kid. When he started questioning her presence, Tomoe rolled her eyes. "One." She held up a long finger, counting up the points as they came. "I'm legal, junior. For everything. I can do whatever the hell I want. Can't say the same for you. "Two: I work here. Security, guess you could say, at a local place. And three: yeh really think anybody's dumb enough to jump somebody my size? 'Specially when I can do that?" She jabbed her thumb at the cracked wall. Not her proudest achievement, sure, but she'd take the victories where she could get. While Tomoe had never asked for her reputation as a fighter, she sure didn't take the good parts for granted. "So I got every right to be back here. You, on the other hand, are in high school -- and don't try to deny it, pickin' out the underagers is half my job. Now you seem like a nice kid, but most'a the time 'round here you get a lot a high school punks prowlin' the streets at night, playin' superhero and pickin' fights. I'm guessing you ain't their sort 'cause you don't look like you got a death wish, but yeh can't be too careful in this town." |

Other people his age playing superhero did make a lot of sense, actually. It would certainly explain the people dashing into an alleyway a while back. But why would she think he could be... Ryu paused, taking stock of his appearence for the moment. He was wearing a black coat with a long hood, his clothes beneath it were obviously intended for some physical activity, and he had just frightened off a hobo, following that up with being a smartass to a much larger and stronger person. "I'm not a superhero. Or trying to be one, I suppose." Giving a waving gesture in the direction he had been heading, the albino boy shrugged. "I have a job in a late night Chinese place, and I'm just cutting through here." "As for the boots and such, I generally travel further above ground level, but this part of town makes that actually less safe than the streets." This was going to be the part where he got yelled at for stalking or being on rooftops or something, wasn't it? |

"What, you mean..." Tomoe pointed skyward and to the left, indicating the roof of the building above them. To her, roof-travel seemed a ridiculous prospect. Weird as it seemed for someone her size, Tomoe hated heights. Or, more accurately, she hated the idea of falling from a great height. Or a minor height. Or any height, really, because falling hurt, and thus she would never dare to get near rooftop entrance, let alone try jumping an alley for a quickly route home. "You sure you're not tryin' to be a superhero?" She shook her head in disbelief. The kids in this town. Crazy. A cold breeze ruffled her ponytail and she ran a hand through it to keep out the knots before giving the teen a shrug. "Well, whatever. If yeh ain't playin' cape, yeh got no business hangin' out around here. C'mon. Safety in numbers, all that jazz." She shoved her hands in her coat pockets and set off the way they'd both been heading, leaving it up to the kid whether he cared to keep up or slip off into the night like albino Batman. |
