Naoki kept a close watch on his opponent's expression, but nothing significant caught his eye; he had a pretty good poker face. It's a deal then, he accepted the wager. I don't intend to lie if he wins, but hopefully he doesn't ask too many questions...

After receiving his new card along with a question, Naoki couldn't help but be amused. Hahah, Schrödinger's Blackjack, is it? This card could either be my savior or my killer, he said before finally taking a peek at it; the Ten of Spades. Bad news... Damn, did I rush things too fast? Naoki wondered, his mouth curling into a frown for the slightest of moments before settling back to normal.

Looks like the poison wasn't even released into the box yet. Hit me again.

Treo drew himself a card and looked at it. Seven of Hearts. 19. It would be risky to draw another card now. He had been hoping for something lower. Placing it facedown on the table he smiled slightly. "Either way, this game ends in a win for you, right? I haven't asked for money, merely a little information about yourself. Even now you're probably thinking of the most innocent things to tell. But at the same time you have everything to gain from this."

He chuckled in reply. "Excellent. You got my reference. Not just sharp, but also rather clever. I like that." Did he know anything about the boy? Nothing at all. Even now he was attempting to construct a brief profile on motions and actions alone. He definitely wasn't some kid who didn't know how to play cards. A stern look and only the hint of disappointment in his eyes when he finally looked at the card.

"The cat still lives it seems." He placed another card face down. Then turned to his own pile. 19. Vegas rules say the dealer stands at 17. There's only a few cards that could keep him in the game. Anything above two would be it. One two had already been drawn. It was in his hand. Did the other boy have a two? That would make it a lower chance.

But there was still the ace. One and Eleven. Much like the Wildcard himself. He steeled himself. For the moment he wouldn't draw. "Lets see then, does the cat still live? Or has the card killed it dead."

Naoki simply shook his head once at the teen's little speech. Come on now, you should know as well as I do that information is a powerful weapon. If I win, you just get to have fun for the rest of the day. But if you do, I could be forced to give up my deepest secrets... Don't tell anyone I still sleep with a teddy bear, alright? he shot back, snickering a little at his own joke.

And again, I appreciate the compliment, he said, as he slid the last card towards him. He did not check it, however, and kept it face down on the box. With that in mind, I'd like to add a little bit to our wagers; all riding on this card right here, he said, tapping it with his index finger. Alright, Ace, it's time to cash in...

If this card is six or higher, I'd like to ask you three simple questions. Nothing too personal, just to calm my curiosity a bit. On the other hand, if it's five or lower, I'll fulfill any one request you make, as long as it doesn't involve violence. And of course, Aces count as one, he proposed. The odds were in his favor, of course, but there was no telling what this boy might order him to do. It's a risk I'm gonna take, though; I can't just know nothing if he ends up winning...

So, I'll ask you right back. Do you believe the cat lives? Or is it dead? Or would you rather leave the box closed, never to know the answer?

Treo chuckled. "Excellent. You understand that information is probably the most important thing in this world. Its what and who you know that make the world go around after all." The Wild Card scratched his chin and nodded. "True. If I win, I get to ask questions and if I lose, I get to spend my afternoon remembering how to play."

He chuckled at the boy's joke. "Scouts honor. Won't tell a soul." When the boy said he wanted to add a little more, Treo smiled a little wider. "I like that. Lets play a little higher then. Fair enough. If you win, I'll answer any question you ask. Truthfully to the letter." A part of him felt like he would regret that. But there was the truth and there was answering a question without telling anything.

"Open the box. Lets find out if the cat really does die." He kept his eyes on the cards. This chance encounter had given him the opportunity to meet with someone who shared a similar mindset. Granted he was a trickster, but there was still a familiarity to that. He remembered his days as a younger boy, playing the cards for a few pounds every now and then.

"One thing I will say is what an intriguing experience this has been."

Well, isn't that what life is all about? Naoki responded, flipping over the card so that both could see; the Ten of Hearts. A sign of success... It looks like the cat lives, he said. His face remained blank, however; he had won the battle, but most likely lost the war.

The questions can come after the game is decided. So, shall we reveal? he asked, ready to flip over his cards and show his twenty-three bust.

"Very true. This is exactly what life is all about." As he flipped the card the teen sighed. "So it seems I will not remain mysterious for long. You'll have your questions." He grinned still however. "But it seems like you won a victory from defeat."

He flipped his cards over, showing 19. "You stole a personal victory from defeat. Even though you lost the game, you come out with information and at the same time, I gain information as well." He laughed. "Interesting! Very interesting. I'm impressed." He saw the 23 bust and simply smiled. "Through a little ingenuity, you manage to keep your higher ground."

The teen nodded slowly. "Ask your questions first, then I'll ask my own."

Naoki couldn't help but grin when he saw the nineteen; he already figured he had lost, but actually seeing it wiped away any anxiety he had about it. I guess we both get what we want, then, Naoki said, gathering up the cards back into a full deck and shuffling them as he thought about his questions.

First question. What is your name, first and last? Naoki asked. The most basic of basics.

Second question. Why did you decide to stop here today, even though you know what this is? he continued. Naoki just couldn't figure out why someone would knowingly throw money away like that. He then stopped shuffling for about thirty seconds, thinking hard about his last question, before finally continuing.

Final question. How can I get in contact with you again? I don't have a phone or a computer, so keep that in mind, he finished. This teen was strange, sure, but Naoki felt a sort of kinship with him; he could have the answer for his financial problems, and Naoki wanted to make certain he could find him again. Not to mention he was one hell of a Blackjack player.

Treo chuckled. "I believe the term is a mutual victory. Perhaps you felt your hand wasn't strong enough previously? I have no idea. You are indeed a very interesting person. You played with my head, not just with the cards." As he thought about his questions Treo thought about his own.

The Wild Card smiled, giving a bow. "Treo Ashdown. I'm a foreigner yes. I originally hail from England. I speak fluent Japanese since I was taught by a... friend of the family." Giving a smile at the second question he shrugged. "Why indeed? Why stop at a boy playing Three Card Monte in a dangerous place, when I knew I'd be out of pocket. Let me say just this. True charity is when people think you've done nothing when in reality you've done everything you can."

He asked for contact. "Excellent. I was hoping the same actually. On Matechi Street there's a Mirror shop. By the side of that is some stairs, which lead to the Glass Eye detective agency. That's where I work. If you ever want to discuss anything, or merely play a few hands of Blackjack, Poker, whatever takes your fancy, feel free to come and visit."

Now it was his turn. "Not three questions for me, rather I'd cash in all three to ask one rather difficult question. Why are you out here, trying to con for money? Trust me, Three Card Monte is the game played by Conmen and those that are being conned. I know exactly why you would play the game, but I don't know why you are. Answer that and we'll be even. No need to tell me your name, or anything else."

He smiled. "A fair trade, no?"

Naoki was a bit curious about the 'friend of the family,' but was otherwise pretty satisfied with the answers. So, basically he's a nice guy who works for freelance detectives, wandering around looking for something to do, decided to be nice to someone looking for money. I can live with that, he thought, bracing himself for his turn to answer questions. Only one came, though, and it was exactly what he was afraid of.

You skip right to the heart of things, don't you... he sighed, remembering his self-promise not to lie. Well, in a nutshell, we're poor. Mother works minimum wage, father's locked up cause he crossed the line. And so here I am, trying to get by. That money you so graciously gave me? That's my mother's dinner tomorrow, and I thank you for it he said, slightly bowing his head for a moment. And since I don't like the idea of being called 'boy on the street,' just call me Naoki, he added on, figuring that if a detective wanted to learn his name, he would learn it anyway.

So, now that we've gotten to know each other, where to next? Another rousing game of Schrödinger's Blackjack? Naoki asked, laughing.

"Well in my position, what would you do? When a man makes a bet on his honor, then the truth is usually what follows. Best to go right to the heart of the issue. Right to the point. The only time I can be sure you won't trick me." He shook his head. "I understand. Without trying to sound callous, that was my assumption."

As he bowed his head, Treo put another 2000 yen on the box without skipping a beat. "I would have called you Trickster-san, but Naoki works just as well. A pleasure to meet you as well." When he offered another game the Wild Card smiled.

"Well why not? The two of us are acquainted and you have your money. You played well the first time, but how about we play the positions a little differently. You can deal."
