"There are many kinds of policeman, Scarlett-san. I should know, my family tree has examples of every kind. Though I'm proud to say the corrupt sorts are pruned early from the trade." It seemed a rather strange time for a tangent, but she planned to get to the point shortly. "There's corrupt ones, yes, and honest ones, and from those two types, several others issue forth. There's of course the platonic ideal you apparently expect. I am not that type: My father, perhaps, but I tried to be that sort, and it is not within me to do so." She added. "I am likely closer to my distant ancestors than my recent ones. Not a friendly neighborhood policeman but an implacable one. One who will make an example of any who break the peace. In short? I am a deterrent." Perhaps one day she would die for it. She was prepared for that since a child. She was necessary in that world, as much as the 'Officer Friendly' Charinko hoped for. There are some people who would never be talked down from what they would do. For those people, and for the sake of those they would have to deal with, there had to be a certain knowledge that if they stepped out of line it was a question of when, not if the long arm of the law came for them. "If you understand or not does not matter to me. Charinko-san will simply have to face you at some point. That being said…" Quickly, she shifted her aim to Shadow Kyo's Primary hand, just above the wrist and fired, hoping to mangle it. "I would not be averse to tipping the odds in her favor." |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

The hand withdrew before the shot fired. The Shadow quite suddenly moved faster than it had moments before, faster than its slipping feet suggested it would have been able to--a hop onto its feet, to the side, throwing the door open but jumping away from it. The gunshot, close as it was, had no opportunity to harm Scarlett with spread. The unfortunate thing about this motion was that in order to get the hand out of the way of the gunshot, Scarlett had to let go of the kodachi. The sword's hilt and handle were blasted, the sword bouncing up and flipping through the air as if catapulted by the gunshot. It would likely result in a nasty cut to Maki's arm unless she pulled her arm back pretty fast. Scarlett got to her feet. Backing away, growling at Maki. "Typical grown-up," she said. "Missing the point. Or ignoring it. Fine. Be that way. Just remember that your 'long arm' of the 'law' stops belonging to the law the minute you decide, 'Gee whiz, that Russian's never gonna get convicted! LET'S KILL HER.' And then you become a hypocrite, because you become a vigilante..." The subject turned right on back around to the crux of why Kyo distrusted Maki and Shin, inevitably, invariably, as if the Shadow simply couldn't keep her train of thought away from it. Whether the blade caused Maki injury or not, the broken kodachi would clatter to the floor. Shane sprinted to a stop, holding his hand out and calling a Summoned Sword into being, holding it there, point aimed at Scarlett, ready to fire. The Shadow was cornered, with Maki too close to the door to make a clean break and Shane standing between her and the far exit. The Shadow backed nearer to the corner of the wall, but stopped a few paces before her back would have been pressed against it. "Let me go, then," Scarlett said. "If you're serious about letting her deal with me herself, then let me go. I haven't done anything wrong. Even this fight was all you. I haven't done anything wrong. I haven't. I just wanted to be useful but you couldn't even let me have that. Let me have my life for a little while longer, damn you!" |

Maki didn't dodge, the blade hit her in the arm. A bloom of sudden sharp pain and a familiar, uneasy sensation of her own warm dark blood tricking down her arm. If she had to dirty her hands so someone else wouldn't have to? So be it. She was aware of how far away things had drifted from the standard. Things would never be the same. That genie couldn't be put back in the bottle. So the only alternative was to ensure it didn't get worse. To that end, she used any means at her disposal. "Very well. We will oblige. I would suggest you refrain from being 'useful' to just anyone else." She reluctantly took her gun from her. "I believe the term you used then was Latin? Quit pro quo? Just remain quiet and wait for Charinko. This is what I expect for that." So, it was a failure. Not for lack of trying, but it was aborted because the situation demanded such. As they parted, she did not take her eyes off her, she was ready to fire at a moment's notice, and would not turn her back until considerable distance was between the two parties. Following that? She intended to leave as soon as possible, lest the Reaper show up. The damaged, rusted kodachi's remains were consciously kept until she was beyond the boundaries of the entrance, then thrown by the wayside. |

Shane glanced toward Maki, a look of irritation coming over his face. Keeping his sword out, he dispelled the Summoned Sword and swung his sword slowly into a two-handed defensive grip, walking to the side, quickly and deliberately, until he stood by the door Maki had departed through. Scarlett had eyes only for the broken kodachi, though. There was a bitter, sad look in its eyes, as if it were mourning the loss of the first weapon her friend had ever crafted her. The blue-haired boy lacked even the knowledge of that, so he could only assume it was bitter over being deprived of a killing tool. It didn't stop him from leaving, and even though he glanced over his shoulder multiple times on the way out, it also made no move to pursue them. In fact, it remained exactly where it was until the other two users were well out of the ruins, just staring at the sword as if its consciousness had--for the time being--simply shut off. "Well, this was a great big whopping waste of time," Shane snapped as he followed Maki back down the corridor to the ruins exit. "Sorry, but my healing magic doesn't work on other people, just--" (He summoned a transparent green, star-shaped crystal to his left hand and crushed it, flooding his body with healing energy.) "--me. You won't get another shot at trapping that thing, you know. It's going to avoid you like the plague from now on, or worse, jump you when your guard's down. You know that, right?" |

"That's fine, I'll just have it looked at the old fashioned way. I suspect a tetanus shot is also in order either way." She shrugged at the healing. Maki looked at Shane almost incredulously at the notion 'when her guard's down.' She seldom did that to begin with, in the ruins of all places? Never. "I suppose you are correct. But I sooner or later she and Charinko will come into conflict. That's ultimately the reason for Shadows of that sort? One must overcome themselves?" And that was why she gave up on killing Scarlett. In the long run, that would have done Kyo no favors. "Well, still I appreciate that when I need help, I can rely on you Spencer-san. Thank you for coming." She motioned to her car. But before she did, she paused, and returned to where she carelessly tossed aside the ruined kodachi. The fact that Scarlett mentioned it meant that it probably meant something more to Kyo than just a weapon. With that in hand, there was nothing keeping them there further. |

"Okay! Sure! You're welcome, anytime, next question, then! Why did Charinko's Shadow keep jibbering on about the Russian lady who apparently kidnapped a bunch of Persona-users and did Frankenstein experiments with them, and why were you completely unsurprised by that?" Shane asked in an even more harried voice as they passed through the entrance. "...Did I miss something big, important, and probably a little exasperating? Because that was kind of weird at the time and the only reason I didn't ask is because I was a bit more worried about being electrocuted to death." ...On the other hand, there might have been a bit more explaining for Maki to do anyway! Kyo's Shadow had a very big mouth. |
