Brief visions of Mayu in some kind of luxurious satin dress, dancing in a ballroom with him flew through Jimmy's deliriously happy mind as she grabbed him by the wr- She grabbed him by the wrist. Mayu had initiated contact today, for the first time since they'd met. He was hit by such a feeling of warmth and happiness that he was finally willing to admit it to himself. Love. Love, in all of it's fickle nature, in all of it's flighty qualities, had struck him over the head with the frying pan of attraction. Was he getting carried away? Yea. Yea he was, and he knew it. Reality ensued for a moment, tearing down the tapestries of a peaceful, white-picket life with 2.5 kids with her long enough to realize how silly he was being, but... His heart still beat a little quicker with her around. Admitting it to her? That was going to come later. Or he was going to blurt it out at the end of the night, like he'd done every other time with her. He really wasn't responsible for his actions around her. Love was a strange thing, and at the very least, for one of the two of them, it bloomed that night. "Mayu!" he laughed, a high, slightly giddy quality to his voice was apparent, "Where are you even taking me? Don't tell me you're afraid of the Beatmania machine?" Mayu seemed to get annoyed at the laughter, and shot a look towards Jimmy that could be accurately described as a death glare. "I don't know where the fuck, y're the one who comes here all the time." She grumbled while dragging him further into the arcade, they went past several fighting game cabinets which were packed with people. Jimmy was right, that place sure saw more business at those late, late hours. "Afraid? Please! Keep at it and I'll chuck ya into it instead." The grip tightened as the rage set in, mixed with embarrassment. Which was frankly a good thing since the man nulled physical damage! "...Fuck my life, like honestly..." |

Jimmy saw Mayu's face turn red, and her grip tighten. It was a grip that would easily put most bench vises to shame, but Jimmy didn't care. He was past the point of caring about self-preservation. She was cute when she was angry. Ridiculously so. "Alright, alright. You're not afraid of such a simple little electronic game." Jimmy said this in a patronizingly sympathetic voice, "I understand. Afraid of being seen in public dancing? Or maybe..." He grinned, part happily, part sadistically. He was enjoying this entirely too much. "Or maybe, Big Bad Mayu is afraid of losing to me?" "It's okay. I understand." He was pretty sure he'd made some mistakes there. But Jimmy was too caught up in the moment, still radiating from the afterglow of realized feelings. He hadn't felt this alive in a long time. |

Indeed, Jimmy had made quite a few mistakes. Crucial ones at that. "Y'know what? Fuck it." That was it. She couldn't take it anymore. Mayu abruptly let go of the man, now livid. How dare he bring her out there in the middle of her hunting schedule just so to bullshit his way into a game she didn't want to touch with a ten foot pole? "Fuck you, and fuck this place. I'm outta here." And thus she quite literally ditched him at the arcade, turning and aiming straight to the exit. There was no way she'd play that game, or be teased in such a manner. On her way, she could be heard grumbling things such as 'what a fucking waste of time' and 'fuck this day in general'. Wait, wait! He was just trying to loosen you up a little! 'Yeah well I'll loosen his ass up with a steel pipe if he doesn't shut the fuck up.' It turned out that Mayu wasn't comfortable enough around him to go on such a gaming adventure at all. |

He should've listened to the voices in his head. He pushed her too far - he'd thought of Mayu as a hard woman, hard like steel, but... Well, something that's hard doesn't necessarily preclude it from being brittle. In certain things, yes, she was cast iron. But in others? Like say, emotionally? When it's not coming from an enemy or a target? When it's coming from... A friend? She was more like an eggshell. Fragile. He lept after her, driving an unfortunate man into an arcade cabinet, ruining his 36-hour Galaga streak. That man, though angry, was too tired to do anything but slumb back onto his playing bench and fall asleep, drool beginning to pool on the flashing GAME OVER screen. He bolted through the doors she exited, nothing in his mind but 'Follow' and 'Apologize, if Possible.' "Mayu!" Jimmy exclaimed, jogging to catch up to her. "Mayu! Jesus, I, I'm sorry, I didn't know you'd react that way..." He took a deep breath. That was nowhere near good enough, but what was he going to say? What could he possibly say? What do you say to a woman that killed to calm herself down? Jimmy felt out of his league. He didn't know what was happening or what to do - all he knew was that he sent the woman he knew he was in love with (one-sided though it was) out the door in a flaming fury, and now that he'd caught up with her, he didn't know what to do. What to say. He knew he had to try though, or she'd storm away from this place and out of his life, and he'd probably regret this moment for a long, long time. You wanna say something to her? Yes. Then say what you mean. Say what you think you need to say. It's all you can do. John, well, he didn't have any magic advice, it seemed. But it was all Jimmy could do. When you fuck up, put your hands behind your back, stand up straight, and admit it. After all, the first step to getting out of a hole is to stop digging. "Mayu!" Jimmy said, attempting to get her attention. She'd continued to storm away from him, and he got the dizzying feeling she was about to break into a run. If she did that, there was no way he'd catch her. "I... god, I fucked up, okay! Please! I'm sorry, I should've never taken you here, I should've never come up to you in the bar! God, I shoulda stayed with my idiot friends! I treated you like shit, and I'm sorry!" His voice took on a desperate, begging quality he didn't like, but he could hardly stop it from coming out. Tears welled up in the corners of his eyes. He was getting emotional again. He knew it pissed her off when he got emotional, but he wore his heart on his sleeve. Always had. |

It took a while before the rush of anger finally calmed down. Mayu outright ignored the first time Jimmy called for her and kept walking in a brisk pace, her fists clenched in fury, wanting to punch something. Ironically enough, she briefly considered going to the Training Center to punch a bag in. The second time, however, actually made her stop, and she looked back. "..." Jimmy seemed quite desperate and sincere, or so his tone and body language let on. Redemption was a big deal for her; it served as a bit of a tranquilizer for her anger. Her hands relaxed just a bit, and so did her posture, as she watched the man plea. For a long time, she was silent. Eventually, Mayu closed her eyes, and let out a sigh. "Idiot..." You're going soft. 'Don't even start.' "Thought I saw some sort 'o fighting stuff in there?" She didn't know why she was so easy to forgive Jimmy - not that she would outright admit it, of course. If anything, those watery eyes of his were just really, really annoying. But with Throne's guidance, she calmed down. It was a part of her, and a positive influence, above everything else. If it actually liked Jimmy - Throne had warned her against Rei multiple times - it was because being around him maybe wasn't that bad? Might as well give it a second shot. "I'll kick your ass." |

The relief Jimmy felt when Mayu forgave him was quickly trumped by how quickly she trashed him at Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It would be a long time before Jimmy could go back to his favorite arcade without a deep feeling of shame. Mayu had talent at fighting games, a natural, inherent affinity for them - Jimmy still lost Street Fighter matches because he got caught up staring at Chun Li's thighs. Glares of disapproval followed Jimmy out of the arcade as he tailed behind a triumphant Mayu, all except for Galaga guy, who no one had the heart to move from his makeshift bed of arcade cabinet bench. Yep. It would be a long time indeed. They emerged into the night air, but, Jimmy didn't feel like the night was over, despite the earlier awkwardness. He wondered if Mayu felt the same way. Only one way to find out, he supposed. "Hey Mayu." Jimmy said, maintaining an easy pace beside her. "Like to drink at all? We could go to a bar or something." Anywhere was better than being back at that arcade for now. That beatdown was really embarrassing. "Well, maybe not a bar. I prefer drinking at my apartment..." Jimmy rubbed the back of his head. "You wanna head back with me?" |

Mayu soon came to the conclusion Strider Hiryu was a fun character to play. Due to having her reflexes honed over years after years of relying on them, it was fairly easy for her to pick up and memorize the character's moves, making quick work of Jimmy. Maybe she should come back later to play some more? "That's what kids do these days, huh..." Mayu mused aloud to no one in particular. It was pretty darn enjoyable, she had to admit. It required skill and quick thinking. Shame those darn consoles were so expensive; no way she could get something for herself on that ridiculous salary. "Drink?" The woman tilted her head slightly, glancing sideways at Jimmy. "...Eh, sure, why not. Either that or goin' back home anyway." She was thinking of going for a drink before Jimmy showed up anyway. |

She accepted. Nice. Jimmy was relieved that she'd appeared to have completely forgiven him for his earlier indiscretion. Too emotional. Too caught up in his feelings - he'd trampled all over Mayu's much more sensitive emotional palette without even realizing it. Courting her was going to require caution and a delicate touch. Two things, he thought, that he had in very short supply. He sighed. _____________________________________________________ They'd arrived at his apartment a half hour or so later. Jimmy unlocked the front door, stepped inside, and his eyes widened in shock. His meager apartment (though a castle compared to Mayu's closet) was a wreck. Half-empty coffee cups and empty soda cans littered every available space, and all his ashtrays were overflowing with cigarette butts. A sock reclined in a cup of... something. Jimmy didn't have the heart to find out what it was or how much the sock had absorbed. Oh god, he brought her here? Why did he think this was a good idea? ...Play it cool. With any luck, she'll blow it off like the last time she was over. "Come on in, I guess." Jimmy said, holding the door open for her. In a meek voice, he added, "Apologies for the mess..." As the pair got to the door of the apartment, Mayu took the chance to unzip her jacket and take it off, knotting its sleeves around her waist. Chances were the house did not have air conditioning, which the arcade had, and she didn't exactly want to sweat while chilling out. Oh, how wrong she was. "..." She stepped inside, and actually remembered to take off her shoes... Not that it mattered. The place was a complete wreck. "What the fuck, Jimmy. Did fucking typhoon Tip originate from here? Geez." She was actually shocked at the state of the apartment. The one time before, she hadn't noticed due to general sleepiness - hell, she passed out right on the couch. That day was another thing entirely. Being a clean freak, her obsession kicked in. Wordlessly, she went straight to the kitchen area, with the intention of doing the dishes. If she had OCD, this was kicking it right in the crotch. |
