Nagashima Road Authority Construction Site

The walk to the site was long, and quiet. No unsavory types decided to bother the large man and the hard-looking girl as they walked, both with easy, unafraid steps. Neither of them wanted to say much - Jimmy was consumed with grief for potentially offending Mayu, and Mayu...

Well, she just wanted to forget what he said entirely. Jimmy was pretty sure of that. They reached the entry gate, and Jimmy went to work. The padlock holding the chain on the gate was pretty hefty, but he came prepared.

He took one of his aluminum jims from his pocket, wrapped the wings of the T around the lock bar, and snap! It popped open like he'd had the key.

He swung open the gate, beckoned Mayu inside, then closed the gate behind them. He kept the padlock in one of his hands, intending to replace it after their clandestine mission was complete. Jimmy had been correct - there was not a soul about the site at midnight. Nomura-san had evidently decided to make his way home after his ghastly deed.

"Alright Mayu." Jimmy said, all business now. "The site's pretty small. The sinkholes are in the middle there, see them? That hole there..."

He pointed to a freshly filled hole. "That is Bunpei's grave. There are plenty more holes like that, big enough for a man to fall into in that group."

"Over there, is our fleet of cement mixers." Jimmy said. There were about four or five, with one idly spinning. "And over there is the pressurized water truck. It's where we draw water to mix the concrete with."

"And there, is the concrete itself." Jimmy pointed to a giant pile of concete mix bags. "And those metal Conn-ex box looking things by the sinkholes are the admin offices. The gray one..."

There were two, a gray, and a light blue one. The light blue one was an employee breakroom, and the gray one was Daisuke Nomura's office. "...is where our mark works."

"I'll let you walk around and see what you need to see." Jimmy said.

The quietness of the walk seemed to bring about some peace of mind to the former hobo. The grip on her own elbow would've relaxed completely, if not for the cold breeze at that hour, which made her shiver ever so slightly - she never thought she'd be out that late.

The girl followed Jimmy inside, her eyes quickly scanning the premises, absorbing information like a sponge. Once knowing where things were, she made her way to the nearest empty sinkhole, peeking down to its depths.

"He always stays in late, right? Until he's by himself?" It seemed deep enough to avoid escape; however, they'd have to act quickly. It was the technology age, the man would probably call the police if he wasn't buried in cement quickly enough.

She then looked up at the supposed office, and decided to position yourself in such a way that should the man walk to her, he'd be the one nearest to the gap itself. Perhaps she should pose as an innocent passerby, who just so happened to hear a call for help from within the depths of the sinkholes...

...And casually request he'd 'check' for her, of course.

"Yea, he usually stays the latest." Jimmy said. "Most days he stays 'til about 1930, then he goes off to go drink. For the last hour or so he's completely alone."

Jimmy had had to stay late himself for work numerous times at this shitty worksite. He knew Nomura's schedule, his working schedule at least, to a T.

He looked over at Mayu, who, although completely focused on her task, was shivering. She was cold. He briefly considered giver her his jacket, but...

No. Too fresh. Mayu didn't like help unless she absolutely needed it.

"What are you planning there?" Jimmy said, rubbing his hands together for warmth. The padlock had been put in a pocket a while ago, the metal was just too cold to hold.

"Easy. I can make my way here no sweat 'n arrive at 'round, what, seven?" At least Mayu assumed there was no one left at the time. Considering Bunpei and Jimmy were the only ones left at six thirty, that was a relatively safe assumption to make.

"I'll be... where I stand." Near the sinkhole, facing the office. "I assume he'll come check up on me if he spots a stranger on his way out? Place's dangerous and all." She then remembered about his lack of safety measures, but it was just common sense at that point.

"I'd need ya t'hide or somethin'. Have the cement ready by this hole. Guess my cue could be 'Looks familiar?' or some crap, and you come in a pour the shit on him. Make sure someone spots you leaving earlier though."

She sniffled a bit with the cold. Did she catch something?

"Seven'd be fine." Jimmy said. "He'd be wrapping up whatever it is he does by then."

He looked at her again. God, but she did look cold. His jacket was a replica bomber's jacket too, with the leather and the fur lining... on her it would be a little too large (but warm), and he did have a sweater on underneath...

No. She's Mayu. He didn't want hear seizing up like she did back in the apartment. It was distressing seeing her like that, for reasons he was having trouble explaining.

"Yea. After what he did..." Jimmy nodded his head in the direction of Bunpei's unfortunate demise, "He'll be very interested in passers-by outside here. No question, he will definitely come to investigate."

He listened to the rest of her plan. God, did she look cold.

"Looks familiar, got it." Jimmy said, taking note of it. "And make sure someone spots me leaving.... alright. I got an idea for my alibi, so, don't worry about that. That's handled."

He paused, thinking.

"I'll make sure I fill a mixer up before I leave for work tomorrow - I can't guarantee if we fill one tonight it won't be used during the work day. We don't have very many, see? I'll do it a couple hours before I leave, so me filling up a mixer isn't fresh in people's minds."

The sniffle settled it. Goddamn it.

Boy just giver her the damn jacket, are you stupid? She's freezing. So what if she kicks you in the nuts again? Where's yo' uh, chivalry?

Thanks John. Y'know, you're not the one getting kicked in the gnards.

I am you, you is me, blah blah blah.

He took the padlock out of his jacket pocket, pulled his bomber jacket off, and put it around Mayu's shoulders. For some reason, her being warm mattered.

"Here. I know, you don't like charity, but..." Jimmy let out an exasperated sigh. "Just take it. I can't stand to see you sniffle the whole way back."

"..."

Mayu felt herself tense up at the proximity again, but actually stayed put that time, having learned from the last two close encounters how wrongly that could end up. She could feel herself warming up with the jacket, and didn't take it off; however, her displeasure was noted.

"If you know I don't like charity, then don't do it." Such a thing was bluntly obvious. Why on Earth was Jimmy insisting so much?

Because you clearly need it...

At least it had just been a sniffle. She was blessed with a good immune system; even if she caught something, she wouldn't be out for long. Exposure to the sickness roaming the streets built her up to resist such things over time.

"...Anyway, just leave a Bedlam message during whichever day I can come by, like, around the same time as today." At least she hoped it wouldn't be in the next afternoon, she needed to repair her crippled schedule. "Say somethin' like, 'I'll be dropping by your house', I'll take that as my cue."

"Next time, I won't, I promise." Jimmy said. "But next time, you'll have that jacket to wear."

Now he was cold.

...But it didn't seem to bother him that much. He looked at Mayu, resentful, but more importantly warm, in his jacket, and...

No. Him being cold didn't matter at all.

"Yea, I think we'll give it a few days." Jimmy said, unwittingly agreeing with Mayu's desire for it not to be tomorrow. "Nomura-san isn't going anywhere. Hell, the fucker killed someone today and he still followed his schedule. And we don't want to fuck up because we rushed it, right?"

He popped his neck, emitting a satisfied sigh as his vertebrae cracked. "Alright. If we're set, then let's get out of here. It's still so fresh to me."

He led her back out of the site, closed the gate behind them, and re-locked the padlock. He sighed, and yanked on the padlock to make sure it was closed.

"God, what a fucked up day." he said, rubbing his eyes. He was tired now.

She got to keep it?

"..."

Despite not outwardly admitting it, Mayu rather enjoyed that outcome. That jacked was very warm, and one of the little luxuries she couldn't exactly afford. Without noticing, she seemed to unconsciously cover herself with the fabric. No more shivering was seen nor felt.

Indeed, rushing would be a bad idea. As Jimmy spoke, a few minor details ran past her mind. Down to what should she say, exactly, or things like what she could wear to look less hostile to the soon to be victim, and more easily approachable so to spring their trap magnificently.

"I think I'm going home now, it's pretty much settled anyway." She spoke once they were out. "Y'should get some rest too."

"Yea. I'm about ready to collapse." Jimmy said, blinking away tears forming in the corner of his eyes. "See you around Mayu. Enjoy the jacket, yea?"

He started the walk back to his apartment, his mind blissfully empty for the first time this whole, rotten day. He hoped it would last when he went to sleep a few minutes from now.
