"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
"June, get back!" Noburu growled, taking the mohawk girl by the arm. She yelped, almost dropped the bat again, and stumbled until he had pulled her back and placed himself between her and the monster. She staggered sideways and swayed, and Noburu extended his hand, another Agi spell building in his palm. Sio's Zio bolt struck true, causing the Shadow to twitch and spasm, but it didn't slow. Even as Noburu let loose his own magic, the Broken Crawler cast its own: a crack appeared in the ground as it slammed one of its human legs down, and a chunk of earth broke free from beneath the floor, flinging itself at Sio. And then it was on fire again, but this time it had skittered aside. The fire was smaller, just on one limb, but the Crawler was shrieking, shrieking. June dropped her bat. It clattered to the floor, and she slapped her hands over her ears. This thing was horrid, terrifying. And these magic-users were terrifying, too. Even-- --No. No, no, no no no, she would not think that about Noburu. Not her Noburu, never Noburu... |

Sio tried to avoid the flung Magna, but due to her poor physique and unimpressive reaction time, the thrown chunk of earth hit her right on her head. She let out a pained cry as she was hit. She was glad that she was wearing her mask when the Magna hit her right above her right eye. Due to the impact, her mask broke and her forehead was bleeding. The young author lost her balance due to being hit right on her head, and she had to use her bo to support her body. Gritting her teeth, she conjured her mask back, putting it on her face, summoning Mnemosyne once again. The titaness of memories emerged from the sea of her psyche before the Persona flung another Zio towards the Shadow. "Urgh... it hurts..." Sio thought to herself. She tried to focus herself despite the pain in her head. If only she could heal herself, she wouldn't have to endure the pain. |

It wouldn't take even a few hits, however, for at that moment, the enraged Crawler made a critical mistake. Instead of casting another Dia spell to heal its burns and regroup, it rushed forward, charging down Noburu. The boy put his fists up reflexively as a flash of light flickered over the Broken Crawler's body. Its speed and strength suddenly enhanced, the creature threw itself full-body at Noburu. The boy had just enough time throw his arms up over his chest, but the full weight of that horrific Shadow fell on him and June could only jump back, yelling her name at the same moment it shrieked. And then the Zio spell struck and it struck true. Noburu felt the monster spasming atop him, flailing its limbs, and felt the electricity try to conduct from its body and into his--but Kohryu's immunity shielded him. After a moment, the monster's motions ceased. The breath gone from his lungs, his arms sore, Noburu heaved the Shadow off his body, and it fell, inert and very much deceased, on the floor in a heap next to him. He pushed himself to his feet, and watched the monster melt. June, still holding her own sore gut lightly with one hand, simply gaped, dumbstruck, as the creature began to melt away and dissolve into black sludge... ---

Seeing that the Shadow had finally been defeated, Sio tried to straighten herself, pressing her hand against her forehead. She was thankful that the wound wasn't too deep and too large. "No crack found. No need to worry..." Mnemosyne whispered from inside her head, telling Sio that there was no internal injury. After she finally regained her stance, she looked at Noburu. "You injured?" she asked. She didn't have to ask the same question to June because it was clear that she was hurt by the attack earlier. There was no need to complicate things here. |

"Just a little roughed up," Noburu said evenly, gingerly testing his arms and twisting his torso, looking as though he were stretching. "I've been in worse street-fights..." June snapped out of her stupor, and opened her mouth to speak, but found that for once, she didn't have any words. Noburu turned slowly toward her and fixed her with a quiet glare, and she found herself shrinking back, just a bit, just a little bit, almost unable to meet his eyes. "...You see why I told you to stay behind?" the boy asked, in a stiff but otherwise calm tone. June bristled, and tightened her jaw, straightened up, gritted her teeth. Took her hand away from her stomach. "I'll do better next time!" she growled through her teeth. "I haven't seen these things before, like you have, okay? I didn't expect it to be so--so--so fucked-up! I'll be ready next time!" Noburu continued to watch June's face, and eventually just seemed to give up on whatever he was trying to say, looking to Sio instead. "What about you? That looked like a pretty bad hit." |

Sio quietly looked at the mohawk girl. If she didn't have a Persona, for what she came to this place for. Then the young author looked at Noburu. She was bleeding, but it wasn't really serious. She was sure that she would be alright. "Will be fine, don't worry," Sio said simply, answering Noburu's question. "Just got careless. Nothing got broken," she added before she looked back at June. She needed to confirm this. "Do you have a Persona?" she asked for confirmation. |

"No. I don't," admitted June Hollyfield in a low, reluctant voice. "I have a big, heavy blunt thing I can smash things with. But I don't have any magical psycho-demons floating around my head, no." Noburu closed his eyes, apparently torn between going back and going on. June, who knew him well enough to guess what was going on in his head, made a quiet "hmph" sound and just marched right past him, further down the hallway. "Let's go and kill something else before that Reaper thing crashes the party," she snapped. "Odds are big heavy blunt things should work on the next monster we run into, right?" "June, stay behind me." And Noburu jogged after her. It seemed like June had made his decision for him, this time. |

Sio concluded that this mohawk girl was a stupid person, no question asked. But she didn't say anything as she shrugged her shoulders before she walked onward, not bothering to say anything to the mohawk girl about going up ahead. She could just hope that she wouldn't get killed in a surprisingly stupid way. And she was hoping that Noburu could somehow lessen the damage by being there with the mohawk girl. And soon after that, a vaguely humanoid shadow, dressed like a jester showed up, displaying a rather inhuman, twisted grin. Well, at least it wasn't as creepy as the Shadow they fought earlier. When it spotted the Persona-users (and the decidedly not a Persona-user), its twisted grin widened. It brandished its weapons, which were a couple of throwing knives. Its limbs were unnaturally long and after brandishing its throwing knives, the Grinning Jester one of its throwing knives towards Noburu. |

Noburu wasn't a videogamer, so likening to Grinning Jester to such knife-throwing enemies as, say, Devil May Cry's marionettes was bit out of his wheelhouse. Even so, he saw the throwing knives coming before the Jester actually threw one--juggling knives was a classic jester routine in some shows or comics, so... ...throwing them wasn't far out of the neighborhood. Noburu reacted in time to avoid being caught in the chest by one, but it still slashed the sleeve of his jacket on the way past, which deflected its flight path, sending it clattering across the floor. June, who Noburu had stepped in front of again, flinched when the knife came flying her way. "Alright, you stupid asshole..." she snarled under her breath. "This time... this time--" As Noburu conjured a spike of rock out of Magna magic, and hurled it at the Jester, June sprinted forward behind it, swinging her bat in a wide arc, attempting to catch the Jester in the torso. Damn thing looked nimble--best to aim for the biggest target... |

The swing hit the Jester right on its torso right after the Magna hit it directly, sending it tumbling behind, but that creepy, twisted grin was still there. Then, it got up back to its feet before it let out such an inhuman cackle. Its eyes glowed as it raised its right, unnaturally long hand and made a 'bring it' gesture towards June. The Persona-users (and decidedly the only normal person) in that place would notice that its body glowed slightly. It somehow Provoked the mohawk girl to attack it blindly.
