[The Tower Bardo branches off of Babel. Because I am clever.] A hand roughly grabbed his forehead, and pushed his head back, slamming the base of it against the back of the bench. His shadow stood there, looking him straight in the eye. Eye to baleful yellow eye. "You're doing really well, fuckhead. One might even think that there's hope for you. They'd be wrong, but they might still think that." Naoya stared up into the face of the doppelganger. The wound on its head dripped gore that matted its hair into spikes around the hole, and inside it was dark. Blood seeped from the gouge, flowing down to mar its healthy-looking skin, darkening its red blazer, staining the white undershirt beneath. Still, despite the wound, it was strong: stronger than he was, certainly. Calm was the best course of action. "What's...uh...what is it this time?" His shadow hung its head in an exaggerated fashion, essentially slamming it downward as far as its neck could bend. This splattered blood across Naoya's pant legs, shoes, and the ground around him. It was different from how he had seen it previously -- manic, almost, though its character always seemed to shift and change -- and he felt very nervous. "Look. I'm not a bad guy," it began. Its voice had a shaky quality to it. "We're not bad. Neither of us. You just need to Go Away, because you're not meant to be here. You can't adapt to things. You can't move on from where you were. From who you were. From the shit you've done. You want to change. You just can't. You can't and that's why you need to suffer." Naoya waited a moment, looking at the wretch that wore his face. "'N' why can't I...move on?" His shadow's head snapped upward, its eyes glowing from within. Naoya flinched from the face, even though it was blank of all expression. "Why?" it asked. He nodded. "Why?" it repeated. Naoya gulped. "Why? Why? Why?" it said, its voice rising to a shriek. "I can hear ya," Naoya said. "'S not...I ain't hard 'f hearin'. Or is that what you're plannin' on takin' from me next?" His shadow smiled, and then laughed, its body shaking as if it were about to start vomiting. It stepped back, its limbs swinging erratically. "I'm you, fuckhead. I'm not taking anything from you. You're giving it up. You're shedding the things that make you strong enough to go on. You're self-centered, but self-loathing. You're so weak you need other people to carry you. You want to be punished. You're afraid to develop as a person. You can't form genuine attachments with people. You're afraid to go on, and going back would be dying. You want to be destroyed, fuckhead. There's no two ways about it." It shook its head, more gore flying from the wound. "Okay, so I'm awful. 'M th' worst 'f th' worst. I...I deserve every bad thing 'cause 'm not strong enough t' go on. 'S that what y' want t' hear?" It stopped, its head hanging at an odd, broken-necked angle. "You don't deserve the Judgment Arcanum," it said, simply. "What?" Naoya squeaked, standing up. "You don't. You keep trying to cheat your way through. You try to tell me what you think I want to hear. You don't give any honest answers. You're a liar. The lowest of the low, fuckhead." "Because none o' this makes any damned...fuckin' sense!" Naoya shouted, grabbing on to his head and squeezing his eyes shut. "You keep movin' th' fuckin' goalposts, and it's drivin' me fuckin' insane!" Silence. He opened his eyes. He was alone. The world was still frozen. "What...where th' fuck've y' gone?" "If you want to gain anything, you're going to have to lose everything," his shadow's voice whispered from behind him. He turned. Its fist connected with his jaw, and he was sent sprawling. It was upon him, grabbing him by the lapels. Another fist met his jaw. "You're going to fail. You're going to chose to fail. Do you know how awful that is? How irritating it is? You called me in to being," It struck him again, and he thought he heard something go crunch. "You made me. You owe me. I'm you're responsibility. I'm here to drive you forward. But you don't go anywhere. You just wreck everything. You disgust me, fuckhead." "What do you want!?" Naoya cried out, blood dripping from his nose and the corner of his mouth. "Let th' fuck go 'f me and lemme live! Who the hell are you to judge me?" His shadow vanished. Something massive and metallic fell from the sky. A blade the size of a jet liner's wing split the surface above his head. A thing of bronze and gold, polished to the point of reflectivity. Carved, repeatedly, recursively, into the blade were a familiar set of words: ॐ असतोमा सद्गमय । तमसोमा ज्योतिर् गमय । मृत्योर्मामृतं गमय ॥ ॐ शान्ति शान्ति शान्तिः ।। The roof crumbled beneath him, and he fell. |
