This thread is a continuation of A Truly Amazing Family.

---

Much to Takeshi's chagrin, the night only got colder. His pace got rather desperate as he dove into the backstreets, in hopes of finding something, anything, open at the time. The thought of posting up something on Bedlam for lodgings never occurred to him, and as it was the end of the month, his bank account was almost empty, so renting a room was not exactly an option.

He did have some money though, for some sake!

At that time of the night, most bars would still be opened. He could warm himself up with some alcohol before trying to find out where to spend his night, though, given his luck, he would probably just wander the chilly streets by himself until he collapsed from pain and exhaustion.

After a good fifteen minutes of running, he found a corner bar that didn't seem to be very frequented, but the atmosphere seemed rather nice and unperturbed. He made his way in almost too quickly, seeking the heat of the building, and looking rather out of place.

"Eh?" The bartender blinked rather lazily from behind the counter, leaning on it, glancing at the newcomer. "Yo, dude, you alright?"

"I'm... I'm fine, thank you." Takeshi said after clearing his throat, straightening his stance and looking around. Apparently, his entrance had captured everyone's attention, regretfully. He cleared his throat once more, signaling others to return to their activities. As if on cue, they did, and Takeshi's eyes fell on the boy behind the counter.

"...Yeah?"

"...Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" He took a moment to analyze the bartender, and his eyes widened slightly when he realized it. "Oh, you were the main suspect in the robbery of that convenience store nearby the other day."

"Wait... What?" He blinked rather dumbly before taking a step back in shock, pointing directly at the man. "OI! I didn't do anythin' 'n I proved it! Ya can't do shit against me!" To say he was scared was an understatement.

"Calm down, I'm not here to arrest you." Takeshi let out a sigh and walked to the counter, sitting down on a stool. "Kimio, right? Mind giving me some warm sake?"

"...R-Right..." What the hell was going on? Toki was confused. Reluctantly, he served the order for the police officer. He wasn't there to arrest him? That was a first...

When Laura drank, she savored it after a heavy meal to lessen the effects on the stomach and liver. Odd, upon reflection, as her finger traced the rim of her umeshu sawa. So many that pray to alcoholism, escape to drank, and how those people were considered. There were those were if they knew the extent of her history with alcohol they might be perturbed.

Yet Laura had been raised respectful, perhaps to the surprise of some. And currently in a green phase, it appeared, regarding her sour green drink. She might have to try it with green tea next time.

She had been enjoying the chance for idleness. Far later than most people did, true. So she had been at the bar for some time nursing her drink before the latest occupant arrived. After catching his tone she thought she might recognize his voice, he sounded like a policeman. After she got up from her seat she recognized a few facial features. She took a stool a few away, leaving the emptiness between them.

"Detective Nakamura, isn't it?" she asked with a slight smile and half closed eyes. She let her fingers fold together over her drink.

Once she got the invitation, Maki accepted and was on her way there. After the week she'd had, there was no way she could have done anything less. She needed a drink, she needed several drinks.

She stepped inside clad in a dark green and vested pantsuit, neatly arranged. Her hair was in a single bun and as if to offset the otherwise severe and masculine look she'd worn a bit of makeup but only the lightest touch.

"Oh, hello Kimino-san, I hadn't realized you worked here." Just the other day, she contacted him shortly after a suspect in a Matechi Street carjacking matched his description. It spared Toki some undue police harassment, and it also made it more likely to find the real suspect without attention and resources diverted onto a red herring.

"Good evening, Nakamura-san." It was a bit late for that greeting, but she used it just the same. She took a seat besides him and ordered her own drink. "Whiskey please. Whatever you have will be fine."

Of course that was her drink of choice. Same as it was for any number of brooding gunslingers, and hard-bitten crime noir private detectives. It was no surprise once Maki was old enough to drink that she'd developed a taste for it too.

"How have you been, sir?" They met perhaps once or twice, the rare occasions the entire Strange Events Initiative could get together and not break off to try and tackle their own problems to the best of their abilities. This was definitely her first time encountering Takeshi in anything but a professional context

Soon enough, the sake was presented in front of Takeshi. After a formal expression of gratitude, the detective gripped the alcohol bowl with a hand, lacking any hesitation whatsoever, not even wincing with the warmth - being immune to high temperatures was surely wonderful.

He was about to bring the lovely drink to his lips, but was interrupted by a female voice referring to him directly. Not expecting to actually meet anyone he knew there, his gaze turned to Laura, and indeed, he had no idea who she was. Maybe his good fame was spreading around?

Better that than what his wife thought of him, anyway.

"Yes, that's me." He replied, feeling somewhat awkward to speak while the little bowl was so close to his mouth. "How may I help you?"

As Maki arrived, Toki seemed to panic a little. "W-What the hell...?" He replied not so jovially, apparently stressed at the situation. "Did my place become some sort 'o cop hang out spot when I wasn't lookin'? Y'all tryin' t'pin somethin' on me...?" With his luck, that wouldn't be surprising. Nevertheless, he poured the requested drink, almost too scared to do anything out of place in front of two members of the force.

"Hm?" Before he could even continue his conversation with the unknown girl, he was approached by yet another woman - this one, he knew. He turned to glance at her. "Yamada-san, I didn't expect to see you here." He didn't expect any cop to be in that neighborhood at that hour when off duty, for that matter.

"Let's say I've had great days... And this is certainly not one of them."

"I don't require your help, Detective, but I thought I recognized you." Her own memory was not complete as during her internships she was most focused on the work at hand. "Have you been to the medical examiner's in the last few months? If not in person I might be remembering you from an associated case file."

Another officer of the law showed up, this one more familiar with Detective Nakamura. Laura did not wish to intrude past her greeting but she wasn't going to change seats again. She began to peel the rind from her drink's citrus garnish.

"Um…" Well, that was a first. It was rare for Maki to be nonplussed. But she also wasn't expecting Toki to react in that way. Just how many times had he been falsely and mistakenly accused of something?

"Don't worry about it, Kimio-san. It's strictly co-incidence I'm here." Really, Toki had enough problems without her adding to that…

"Pleased to meet you, I am Maki Yamada." She nodded in regards to the young woman that Takeshi was already talking to. She was an albino, was she not? Had she seen her before? It would have been hard to forget… Not long after it reached her, the tumbler of whiskey vanished as she threw it back and set the empty glass back down… "One more, please?"

Probably her limit, but she wanted to get there as soon as possible. "Well, what happened Nakamura-san? Would it help to talk about it?"

Toki was quick to pour a second round of whiskey, letting out a sight of relief. During exam season, the last thing he needed was a run in with the police. Just has he had done that, he leaned on the counter and watched the TV in the opposite side of the bar. Apparently, some replay of a baseball game was on.

Takeshi took the opportunity of the greeting to turn back to Laura, even if momentarily, and continue their discussion, as it wouldn't look impolite. "I'm afraid not, my medical checkup is only in a little over a month from now." He was honestly scared of it though. With his new resistance to physical hits, would any needles find it tough to pierce his skin, or outright break?

As the question about his personal life rose, he felt somewhat hesitant.

They might help, you know. At least until you get back on your feet.

'Dad wouldn't ask for help.'

Dad wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.

Well, Zagreus had quite the point there. Takeshi took a moment, and at last drank his previously ordered drink in pretty much one go, needing the influence of alcohol to actually be able to let his problems out.

"To put it short, it seems I'm homeless for the time being."

Laura chewed some inner bits of her citrus garnish. "I'm afraid I wouldn't examine you until after you had died," she said with an amused smile from the common misconception. "More likely in autopsy should your death be marked suspicious. I work with the city morgue and have had a few chances to aid in determine cause of suspicious deaths."

"Greetings, Urara Uehara," Laura said in response to officer Yamada's introduction. "Though you can call me Laura." As the conversation teetered again between the co-workers, Laura masked her surprise quite well at detective Nakamura's revelation of being 'homeless.'

"I see."

That sounded serious. And of course it was. She held the small glass up to her lips and sipped somewhat gingerly. This second shot she planned to nurse, it was going to be her last for quite some time. Her frown deepened when she recalled something: Nakamura-san was married.

"Domestic problems?"

That put it rather plainly, but it was implied that his wife put him out. He was homeless, not they were homeless. She switched streams somewhat and turned back to the young woman.

"It's good to meet you, Laura." Were honorfics necessary in such a relaxed, informal setting? She decided, for once, to relax on a rule. Sure it was a trivial one, but that was still rare enough for Maki.

Her own problems, entirely professional, would be set aside for the moment, Takeshi had a serious problem. "Nakamura-san, I can offer a couch if you require a place to stay."

If she knew why he was effectively homeless, perhaps she would not have offered so calmly.

Takeshi's face momentarily contorted in what seemed to be a wince, but it vanished as soon as it came, at the mention of morgue. The latest murder case he had worked on was none other than Hibiki Kurosawa, the young man stripped of his flesh and left to rot in the park. He could stomach seeing such things with some effort, but he couldn't begin to fathom the stomach someone must have to perform an autopsy on someone in such a state.

In short, he admired such examiners.

He decided not to reply, as it was a time to be away from work, from everything; he would most likely focus on such a thing from there on out, but for those few hours, alcohol would be his employer. As he broke out of his reverie, Takeshi lightly nodded to Maki's assumption.

"Despite appreciating the offer, Yamada-san, I must decline. I couldn't possibly impose. Also, it's hardly appropriate." Of course, the first conclusion his wife would draw was that he was definitely cheating on her; might as well just sign the divorce papers.
