"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
Etsuko looked up, at Hanako. And then toward Benkei. She flinched a bit when she did; and then, to Masumi. She drew in a breath, and stood up straight. She reached up, and then into the collar of her shirt, and tugged the string underneath. The ring popped out, and then dangled against the outside of her shirt. Masumi walked over to Etsuko, and placed a finger on the ring, running it slowly around the golden metal. That contact was enough for her to sense the Rakukaja enchantment that had been built into the ring. "I'm sorry for lyin'," mumbled Etsuko. "C-Can I keep it?" Masumi bit her lip, and then did the only sensible thing she could think of at the time: she swept Etsuko into her arms, embracing the girl in a tight hug. "Of course you can," she said softly. "Keep it. But don't wear it against your skin. And especially not on your finger. Understand?" "Mm-hm. It's too big, anyways... it don't fit." |

"Etsuko? Hey, Etsuko?" He wanted…well Benkei wanted a lot of things, but he didn't want Etsuko to react that way when she looked at him. "I can understand wanting to protect your sister. I just wanted you and Masumi to be safe." "Yeah, sorry about um, all this." Hanako said as she stepped back. "Well, if that's it, guess I'll be in the car too, seems like this is a close friends and family sort of thing." As the high schooler decided to leave, it made Benkei a bit uncomfortable. This was just the sort of thing Masumi wanted more than anything. It was the situation she belonged in. Could he see himself as a part of that? Was he just in the way…? He glanced away and said. "Well, I guess that's it, we'll just be going home then. I'm really sorry, both of you." |

Etsuko looked at Benkei over Masumi's shoulder, and gulped a bit. When he spoke, though, he was as nice as ever. It was so hard to believe that this man was one of the ones who might kill Nishi... ...But then, she was the opposite of nice now. The exact opposite. The complete and absolute opposite... The girl pulled back from Masumi, and watched Hanako go. The door was still unlocked, so walking out would be no problem. As for the fortune-teller, she took Etsuko's face in her hands by both cheeks and laid a kiss a on the girl's forehead, a gesture that left Etsuko feeling both warm and somewhat confused. The woman turned around and walked up to Benkei, looking a bit weary with the whole encounter. "Thank you," she said in a quiet voice. "For coming. For caring. For not... flying off the handle like Toru..." And then, smiling, she leaned in and whispered: "I didn't know it was you at first. You've ascended..." Etsuko, fingering the ring that dangled from her neck, walked toward the couch and flopped down on it, sitting in the middle and leaning back, closing her eyes and letting her hands drop to her sides, the gaudy diamond ring hanging freely and openly against her shirt. --- When Hanako stepped outside, she would find Toru sitting on the front step, head down, cane leaning against the side of the house beside him. His fingers were rubbing at his temples and his eyes were shut tight. The voice had stopped. He could think. But the ordeal inside the house had left him with a dull headache that hadn't even been building up before; it had simple happened. |

"Oh, it's nothing, of course I'd come. I don't want anything to happen." He had to admit. "Honestly? I flew off the handle last night…" It didn't seem the time or the place to go into more details than that. Etsuko had a bad enough time as it was. He could understand and appreciate what she was trying to do before. "Um, I'll come back later. Y'know? Just me? I'll bring some takeout and we can play a game or…talk more about this Persona thing. Whatever you like." He was turned to the door, but paused to speak out loud "That seemed pretty out of character for Motou-san. I'm a bit worried." was the guilt of that incident still eating at him? It was the only thing Benkei could have guessed at what would have made him lash out like that. --- Outside on her way to the car, Hanako paused when she caught sight of the journalist. "Hey are you um…" She trailed off, and for good reason. of course he wasn't alright. Instead, she decided to ask something else. "Do you want a ride back home, or something? I mean, if that's okay with you…" |

Toru looked up, regarding Hanako thoughtfully for several seconds before answering. "Normally," he said, "I would walk, so that I could use the time to clear my head. But between my leg and the dangers of these streets... it probably is wise to ride with you, yes." The journalist took up his cane and stood, leaning heavily on it to push himself up. "I apologize," he said stiffly. "I have been under strain of late. I should know when to pull back..." --- Masumi made a motion as if to move closer to Benkei when he spoke of what had happened to him the previous night, but he was already turning toward the door. Pulling back a bit, the fortune-teller sighed, and nodded. "He isn't normally like that... something feels strange about his--Persona, though..." Etsuko's lips curved downward into a slightly pouty frown, and she opened her eyes. "Y'keep usin' that weird word. What's it even mean?" "Persona's what we call these powers," Masumi answered, looking back toward Etsuko for a moment, before turning back to Benkei. "Please come over, by all means do. I have work this evening, but if you're free between five and seven..." Etsuko nodded slowly. "It'd be nice t'have company. And, I dunno what my sister did last night... it musta been before I saw her, but... I'm sorry for it. Whatever it was." |
