"I...I c'n see that," Naoya said tiredly. He looked up at the sky as if seeking inspiration. Of course, he found none there. The sky was as distant and empty as it always was. "She said y' weren't able t' hear things y' didn't want t' hear," he explained. "Things that might lead you t' ascend...things that you're afraid t' admit 'r even really consider. I could share, but th' implication was that you'd just take it as encouragement. 'R maybe 's hollow flattery." He glanced over at her. They both looked extremely drained. He closed his eyes, and hung his head. After a second, he sat up and then twisted at the waist, first one direction, then the other. A series of "pops" were emitted from his back. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
Kyo stared blankly at Naoya. "Things I'm afraid t'--oh, for fuck sake, there ain't anythin' left," she said exasperatedly, still rubbing her temples. If only her head would just stop buzzing... "Yours... lemme see if I can remember right... head's feelin' funny right now, um..." The green-haired girl snapped her eyes closed and put her head down. "First thing was... 'You're right about one thing. He is incredibly dense. He thinks I'm his enemy.' Then... um... when I asked how--when Nevan asked how y'were doin' in whatever Shadow vision y'were havin', it said as well as y'ever do, but, um... '"The point's as much t' delay him as anything else. If he were t' break on through now, it'd be messy.' I think. And then, uh--sorry 'bout this, his words, not mine--'The fuckhead never gets the point. That's why he's the fuckhead and I'm stuck wearin' his meat suit for a few minutes. He's tearin' the damned thing to shreds.'" Kyo winced a bit at that. Her first thought was that Naoya's Shadow was indicating that Naoya needed to slow down or ease up or something, but she wasn't sure how to formulate that thought into advice relevant to Naoya's situation. So she went on: "It also said 'cause y'trained yourself away from malice, uh, it doesn't hate anyone but you. And that it wants t' break your relationships with people t' deny ya strength? Then--er--' I don't want to kill anyone. Ideally, he would simply vanish and cease to be. He and I are in accord on this, though he is too cowardly to acknowledge that fact.'" Kyo opened her eyes and gave Naoya a look of concern at that, but then she grimaced. "That was when y' jammed your finger in your ear," she finished heavily. "Nevan was s'posedta stop ya doin' it, but I guess she had other ideas. Thought there might be some sorta pattern t' the self-harm, I think. Occurred t' me earlier, actually, but--" She broke off and shook her head. "...Well, too late now... knew I shouldn'ta trusted that bitch..." Normally, when Kyo groused aloud about Nevan, it would have laughed or whispered some smartass remark, or... something. This time it was silent. Kyo wondered if her Persona was feeling as drained by this episode as she herself was. |

Naoya nodded. "Yeah. 'T calls me 'fuckhead.' Y' get use to it, after a bit," he said, then ruminated on what Kyo had said. He muttered: "Slow me down, eh?" He thought longer...perhaps the prophecy and the "messiness" that the shadow had mentioned were intertwined. It didn't have any malice for anyone else, so why would it start a fire? Just to spite him? Or maybe that was what it was trying to prevent... "Nevan said a few things. She said that there're three problems y' gotta solve, 'n' you got through th' first two inna week. She said th' first hurdle was openin' up t' people, lettin' 'em see you. 'N' th' second one was t' let go 'f th' knee-jerk judgment 'f others. Th' third...th' one you ain't got...'s Nevan. I ain't sure exactly what...y'know...what she meant by that. Just that you were approachin' th' issue 'f her all backwards. I think...y'know...I think maybe it could have t' do with forgivin' yourself f'r what you used t' be, 'n' unnerstandin' your reasons. Not sure, 'zactly, but it could be th' case." He sighed. "Y'know what, I ain't entirely sure how t' interpret it. Shadow, persona, this whole damn thing gives me a headache. Third or fourth worst I ever had, must be." |

Kyo opened her mouth, but it just hung there, open, not a sound coming from it. It was as though she'd been compelled to respond immediately, but then come up blank on exactly what to say. In the end she closed it without saying anything at all, and just put her head in her hands, pressing the heels of them into her eyes. "Urgh..." she groaned. "I dunno how the hell I'm s'posedta think anythin' about anythin' with my head goin' like this. First two--yeah, Morrigan said somethin' about 'the first hurdle' the day I hooked up with Hiroko. And she gave me a pretty hard slap on the wrist when I met Kinzaki, I sorta--well, I thought she'd be all snooty and high on herself 'cause she's rich. After that I just sorta, I dunno, tried t' get t' know people better... maybe..." The girl's thumbs rubbed at her temples. They didn't hurt, but the feeling was weird, and she couldn't help wanting to do something to relieve it, even if nothing she did would actually have an effect. "Backwards..." she mumbled to herself. "How can I be gettin' it backwards... what backwards is there..." |

Naoya saw Kyo work on her temples, and held out his hands as if to grasp something. By way of instruction, he said: "Hands." His uncle would be arriving soon, but he felt that -- if he and Kyo were as similar as Nevan had suggested -- then helping her figure out her issue might be beneficial. If only what Kyo's persona had said made any sense to him. "Well, uh, maybe yer askin' th' wrong question. How're you goin' 'bout dealin' with 'er, now?" Naoya asked. "Seems like figurin' out what you think frontwards is'd be th' key, there." |

"...Ain't a headache," Kyo said dully, but she offered Naoya her hands anyway. "Feels weird n' buzzy-like..." Kyo tried to think over Naoya's question, but after a few moments she just shrugged her shoulders and made an inarticulate sound of hopelessness. "Dunno," she said. "I dunno what there even is t' do about it. I've thought about it, yeah, but everythin' I can think of just leads back t' the same idea that made me ascend in the first place." |

"Which...uh...which was...?" Naoya asked. As he did, the PA blared a tone, and an announcement rang out: "Would Naoya Imoto please report to the front gate?" He stood up, legs wobbly, and then gathered his things. Of course it would be now. They might have gotten someplace useful, but it would obviously have been interrupted. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and then said: "Bedlam later? We c'n try t' figure something out. This's kinda th' sorta thing I've been studyin'." He looked down, realizing that he had been neglecting his other studies. "We c'n try'n do a thing." |

"Ha... well, we can, just..." Kyo sighed, pulling her hands back and resting them on her knees. "...Just don't get so excited about it thatcha do what I do and forget everythin' else. Helpin' me, that is. I do that a lot. Get so wrapped up in other people's stuff that my stuff just sorta gets thrown in the back room, yeah?" She watched Naoya as he got himself and his things together and then asked, "Y'want me t' go down with ya?" |

"Sure," Naoya said with a crooked smile. Then he stopped. "There...uh...there was something else that I kinda wanted t' talk about...uh...it seemed like one 'f th' things that's been buggin' you is how you...y'know...how y' used t' treat people 's things, y'know...'stead 'f people. Y' think that maybe th' use of 'fix' t' refer t' how you help 'em might be...uh...might be 'n extension 'f that same attitude?" He massaged his right hand and looked away. "I used t' try t' do that. Fix people, I mean. 'S one o' th' first things m' shadow took me t' task over. I was tryin' t' fix people -- treatin' 'em like things, 'n' kinda...settin' m'self over 'em -- 'stead o' tryin' t' help 'em heal, y'know...'s an equal. Just...just something that occurred to me." |

Kyo stood up, but paused when Naoya spoke again. The look on her face was strange, almost inscrutable save for a minor hint of discomfort and a general sense that she was unsure if what she was hearing was entirely right. "Don't think I, uh, don't think I really set myself above people, 'xactly," she said slowly. "It's complicated... I guess, uh--I guess even if I slip up, I want other people to... not slip up. Or somethin'. And tryin' t' work out other people always seems simpler than--well--me." The girl rubbed at the back of her head, then gestured to the door and said, "Let's just put this on hold for now. I wanna get my head on a bit straighter before I think any more." |
