Jimmy hesitated. The wolf didn't really look like much of a threat anymore... He reluctantly stepped forward, hammer raised. The wolf shied back, and whimpered. Jimmy took a deep breath. This thing isn't natural, Takahara. John said. His voice was as usual, soothing, but there was a hard edge to it. If it comes out of that stupor the samurai child put it in, he's gonna go right back to attackin' you. Jimmy considered this, and raised the hammer. The wolf uttered another whimper, rooted to the spot. He brought the steel down, and the hammer rang in the empty hallways. |

And so, the Shadow died. Slowly, the corpse of the wolf melted, turning into some kind of black ichor that became a puddle of black disgusting mud which also slowly evaporated into nothingness. Karma rested his pickaxe across his shoulder, grinning as he dismissed his crimson mask and his Persona, Angra Mainyu. "Not bad, big guy..." Karma said to Jimmy. "For a guy who just woke up in the middle of nowhere, you did it good, unlike some others," he said. He looked at Kakeru. "So, what are we gonna do now, Kakeru-senpai?" he asked the upperclassman. "Let's get out of this place," Kakeru said, also dismissing his mask and looked at Jimmy. "I guess we need to explain things and stuff to him first. Like most people, he's also spirited away by the golden butterfly..." he said. "Where's the direction of the exit?" due to his problem with directions, he had to ask for Karma to show the way out. "Alright, come on!" Karma energetically announced as he walked towards the direction of the exit. "Let's go," Kakeru told Jimmy. "I'll explain things to you on the way out..." he said, smiling. |

Jimmy flipped his welder's mask up, intending on thanking Pickaxe Kid on the compliment, but the words died his throat the minute his mask lifted. As soon as the steel veil was removed, it was like someone flipped a switch - he could feel John's vitality and energy pour out of his limbs like a sponge being wrung out. He shook his head to clear it from the growing fatigue he felt. "Thanks. I suspect most people don't wake up with one of these..." He gestured with his sledge. The two of them discussed for a second, and the consensus was to find their way out. Jimmy was the silent third that turned the majority into a landslide victory. He was tired. He was scared. He wanted to find a quiet place where he could sit and think out what had happened. "I'd be might happy for some answers right bout now." Jimmy said to Kakeru, shouldering his sledge the same way Karma shouldered his pick, "In fact, it's probably one of the things I want most right now. Where are we? What are these powers?" He followed them out, trying to blink away a growing headache. "And uh, I picked up your name was Kakeru. Who's the uh..." He gestured at the other. "Who's the pickaxe kid?" |

So, as Karma led them towards the exit, Kakeru answered Jimmy's questions. "Well, this place is called 'the ruins' which is just below Nagashima. We still don't know much about it, but you can learn it on your own after this through Bedlam..." Kakeru explained to Jimmy about the place where they were fighting the Shadows. "About the power, it's called 'Persona'..." Kakeru told Jimmy about their powers. "Persona means 'mask' in Latin, and it is the manifestation of our other self. Just think of it as the other you, but more powerful and shoot awesome things like fire or ice..." he chuckled to himself when he said 'awesome'. It's been a while since the last time he said that. He swore that he also heard Karma chuckling to himself when he heard the word 'awesome'. "The power of Persona is awakened when you're brought by the golden butterfly into this place. We dubbed the golden butterfly 'Philemon'..." he said. Karma nodded when Jimmy said his name. "Yeah, my name is Kakeru. Kakeru Kagami..." then, he introduced the red-haired boy who was guiding them towards the direction of the exit. "And that guy over there is Karma. Karma Akatsuchi..." he paused for a while. "I dunno why he's called that, though. Don't ask me," he shrugged. "My old man got a strange taste in naming his kids..." Karma who was in front of them said. "Well, my sis is pretty normal, I guess..." |

"So, alright. We're below Nagashima." Jimmy ticked off the bullet points of Kakeru's conscise explanation, "And the golden butterfly Philemon gives us Personas.... which are masks, that we wear masks to summon." He blinked his eyes a few times, almost as if his face was expressing how difficult it was for his mind to digest all this. "And you two and Kakeru and Karma." He grinned. "I think, if you two don't mind, I'll just call you by name, eh? I'm Jimmy Takahara. Jimmy's fine. I don't go for formalities much." He didn't want to be rude by asking them more questions, but there was definitely a few more more he wanted. "I've been here a few weeks, before. I work a construction job with the Nagashima Road Authority, mostly repairing roads, and there's this one job we keep putting off. That sinkhole in the hospital parking lot... and that other one." He tried to phrase what he was going to say next. "Those weren't just.... weren't just natural, were they?" Jimmy said, mostly to Kakeru since he had his head on a little straighter than Karma, "Those sinkholes are related to this somehow, aren't they? And all the disappearances we've been having on our work crews?" He took a deep breath. "A lot of the shit that's been happening in Nagashima has been related to this, right? This persona and... what were those creatures? Shadows?" |

Kakeru nodded. "Yes, this place sure has something to do with the sinkholes," he said. "Not only that, but the disappearance of most people, they're those people who didn't make it alive in this place," he closed his eyes. He felt sorry for those who lost their lives here, in the ruins. Well, it still couldn't be helped. It's not like he could save everyone, right? "There were people who ended up here and got killed by the monsters. People like us were lucky because there were people who went down here to find us," Kakeru continued. "And those who didn't make it..." he sighed. "They ended up dead. You're lucky that we were here to find you..." he said to Jimmy. Sure, they had a scanner who could detect those with potential, but it's still not enough to save everyone who got lured into this nest of monsters. "By the way, those monsters, we call them Shadows," Kakeru told Jimmy about the Shadows. "The ones we fought just a while ago, they're some of the weakest ones here. Just like Slime in video games, only real," he made a comparison to make it easier to understand. |

He thought of all the disappearances they'd had. The Nagashima road authority had submitted eight missing persons reports to the police over the last three months, or so he'd heard. As long as his, Kakeru's, and Karma's luck held out, he'd stop them from having to submit a ninth. So... He remembered his dream, remembered Kyosuke Tsu and the black ooze. It made sense. Tsu must've been a persona user as well, recently awakened, but he didn't have two guardian angels to save him. No 'scanner' picked him up. No others - and surely those others had to be Persona users as well, or they'd never survive here - had stumbled upon him, locked in a broom closet. "Just like the Slimes, eh?" Jimmy said. He feigned like he didn't have most of the Dragon Quest games on a shelf somewhere, but Kakeru was pretty smart. He probably saw right through him with those icy eyes. "I guess those are a... video game... enemy. Of some kind." He cleared his throat, changing the subject as quickly as it could. "Hey uh, Karma was it? How longer 'til we hit the surface?" Jimmy twinged at the country Osaka twang he seemed to have picked up from John Henry. God, did he sound like a bumpkin... Edited by Sumitomo, Dec 21 2013, 06:20 AM.

"Just a little bit," Karma answered before they finally reached the exit. "Aaand... here we are!" he announced. "Welcome to the outside world!" he stepped out, exiting from the dark labyrinth that was the ruins and breathed in the fresh air. It's good to beat some Shadows to pulps, but it's even better to breathe in some fresh air from the outside world. "So, any more questions, Jimmy-san?" Kakeru asked Jimmy. "By the way, do you have a computer and Internet connection at home?" he asked. He wanted to make sure that he could get access to Bedlam. |

Jimmy's sense of relief at being back above the labyrinth was palpable. He breathed deep, knowing he was lucky to even be alive. Eight of his fellow workers weren't as lucky, and he took a moment to let that sober his unbridled joy at being alive. "Thanks Karma. Thanks to the both of you. I seriously owe you guys one." He took a deep breath. "I do have a computer and internet access. I mostly use it to download emula-" He smoothly replaced the rest of the word 'emulators' with 'sports rosters'. It sounded as lame as you'd think. "Believe me, first thing I'm doing when I get home is registering on that Bedlam place you mentioned. I take it that graffiti we passed was the URL? I wrote it down here..." He patted his pockets for the scrap paper he absentmindedly scribbled on a few minutes ago. He produced it, then pocketed it again. "I should be good." He held out his hand. "Seriously guys, thanks. And drop the -san. I'm only... " He winced. "Ten years older than the both of you..." |

"Good," Kakeru nodded. "Well, if you say so..." he shrugged when Jimmy told him to drop the honorific '-san'. Well, being ten years older meant that he's probably around 27, almost 30, like his surrogate father, Takeru Kagami. When Jimmy held out his hand, Kakeru took it, giving the man a firm handshake. "Please stay safe. Nagashima isn't really kind to us Persona-users. If you get yourself in trouble, just PM me. I'm Tsukuyomi no Okami in Bedlam, no capital letters, dash between words," he said. "Stay alive, will ya?" Karma reminded Jimmy with a fox-like grin. "Once you get yourself a Persona, trust me, you'll get yourself in some wacky hijinks and shenanigans sooner or later," he told the older guy. |
