Nishiyo's only response to Maki's answer was a little chuckle that most certainly wouldn't carry far enough for the officer to hear it. It was too late at night for the trains to be working, so, Nishiyo would indeed walk. She would walk, but not home.

No. To the woods, from a direction that looked like it was headed toward Matechi Street. To the woods, and to the cabin her family had bought there when she'd decided to move into town, just in case. It was so close to the ruins they'd probably just think she was headed to the ruins, if they bothered to track her progress that far.

---

June stopped, looking for a moment, stricken. Then, her eyes turned to ice. "You--why the hell should I trust you, eh?! I see the way you're looking at me! You don't give a shit, none at all! And you want me to sit here and let you be all mysterious about my boyfriend being gone, you--"

The girl cut herself off, expression one of brief embarrassment before snapping back to anger.

"Noburu-kun," she said, with a hesitant but very deliberate emphasis on the honorific, "is the most important person in the world to me. If you don't take me to wherever it is he is, I will make you, and damn whatever police connections you've got."

The question of what Maki was to do now was a troublesome one.

In the end, she decided it would have been best if she helped Benkei diffuse the situation with June.

----

"You can try Mohawk, you can try with all your might, and while you do time's still going to be wasting, time I could have spent looking rather than wasting it with you."

She was going to be persistent, he still showed no signs of letting up. "Police connections? My connections begin and end with helping them try to put away that bitch who murdered my girlfriend. You know her better as your boss, don't you?"

He repeated flatly. Telling her just how it was. "It's not quite the same as you. If I can help it, I'll not let someone fucking die. But if you tag along you'll only get in the way."

She approached the two, her gun down and away."Hollyfield, just let him go. He can bring Noburu back to you, but you're going to have to stand down for that to happen." She looked to wherever she last saw Sadako had scurried off to. "I think it is safe to say your employment with Nishiyo Sadako has been terminated."

June's eyes only got wider and wider with fury as Benkei talked, her lips parted more widely still in a snarl.

"Unless you're another invincible freak like the last fuck who picked a fight with me I think I'll have a pretty good tr--!" she began to say, but then the woman was there, at her side. And then there was Yamada. The woman was fucking Officer Yamada, who wouldn't even tell them what really happened to Shouta. She turned to face her, and her snarl turned into a vicious smile that spoke of victorious, dawning comprehension.

"Oh. Oh-ho-ho, of course it was you," she said. "Shouta goes missing and there you are, and you can't tell us what happened, it's 'officially' an accident. And now my Noburu is gone without a trace and I can't even help look. What's so secret that you can't let us know, huh? And why the hell should I trust you when you're STILL HIDING WHAT HAPPENED TO SHOUTA?!"

This last came out as a screech at the top of June's lungs. A screech, which carried quite far.

A screech that Nishiyo heard. Around the corner from where she'd started, the black-haired girl stopped, and paused, frowning to her herself as her brain processed the scream and what it implied about the relationship between the police and the two children they'd enlisted as undercover agents.

With a single deep breath she replied. "Fine. You wish to know? Shouta was taken, just as Eri Charinko was in a way similar to Noburu. Though a poorly explained process they are taken to an underground complex beneath the city where experiments have essentially broken reality as we know it. As a result he was left where creatures believed to be a result of these experiments were able to kill him. I had arrived in time to rescue Eri but sadly was too late for your friend. Now, if that doesn't satisfy you, I will stay here and tell you everything I know, but if someone does not go and make sure the same thing does not happen to your boyfriend, He will most certainly die too. Do you understand?"

She turned to Watanabe. "Go."

"Going." Without a second thought, he chose the quickest route possible to the main entrance of the ruins and jogged away.

June's mouth dropped open. Stood there. Staired. Benkei walked away, and for several long moments, June seemed unable to process what she'd been told, but the look in her eyes hadn't changed. After a few moments, she leaned forward, eyes narrowed, and said, quite simply, but in a ferocious growl befitting a feral dog:

"That's the fattest load of bull I've heard in my life. Are you making fun of me, officer?"

She sighed, and responded, flatly without missing a beat. "And is it any wonder why we were forced to stick to such a cover story? Truth is stranger than fiction, after all."

She supposed she'd have to show her. She held out her hand, and there was her mask, she let it hover above her face. "Do not be alarmed, you demand a full explanation of what's going on? And I intend to give it to you."

Then she put it on, and appearing besides her was Xie Zhai, the creature had a stand-offish stance and glared balefully at June…for all the three seconds before Maki dismissed it, mask and all.

"Something drags people to these ruins, then leaves them to their own devices. Then one of two things happen, the creatures there kill them. Or they survive and in the process gain this ability, known as Persona." A part of her knew she shouldn't have told her anything. But still one of her friends died because of this, her boyfriend might yet still if things go poorly.

And if he didn't? Well, she imagined she might have learned that anyways. "And that is the truth of what happened to Shouta Kimura."

"What the...!"

Demon. Sheep--ram--thing. June instantly backed away, eyes going wide, and pointing at the thing, or the place where it had been. But Maki didn't give her time to gawk or accuse her of being one of the magic-users, or even to utter some version of they really do exist! She just powered on through. In the end June was backed up against the wall, gaping at Maki in inarticulate denial. And could anyone blame her, really? Someone had just told her that magic monster-people really exist, and that her boyfriend had been whisked away to become one himself.

"...That can't--I mean--you can't be--it can't--he can't be--"

Monster. Magic-using--he was--she was--they--no she lying, Yamada was lying--

And so it was that, unwittingly mirroring the reaction of the boy she had fallen in low with, June slid slowly down the wall and came to rest in a sitting position, staring and shaking her head. Just, staring and shaking her head.

"Well, there you have it, you demanded to know what was happening, and know you know. Satisfied? In the mean time we'll have to wait and see if Watanabe-san could successfully rescue Nakano-san."

She didn't feel any great urge to tell her about Nishiyo and her own Persona, not without being asked. If Noburu just left, and Watanabe-san followed as fast as possible…then yes, it should have been fine.

"--But--even--" June forced out, and then broke off. And then a moment later she'd pushed away from the wall, and she was on her knees, kneeling in front of Maki, as if in supplication. "Even--even if he's been taken, it doesn't mean--that guy might be able to get him out without him--without him having any powers. Right? He can do that? Right?"

June realized a moment later that she might have crossed a line, and shrank back, looking away. She was in the presence of someone who could not only floor her in hand-to-hand combat alone, but who could summon demons, use magic, whatever else these people were capable of. Almost point-blank saying she didn't want her boyfriend to become one of them...

"I-I didn't mean... I just..."

She should have followed him. She should have followed that guy, that Benkei guy, should have followed and done something. But here she was, doing nothing. Doing nothing again.

She felt an absurd, childish urge to cry. But she wouldn't. She wouldn't. She wouldn't give--give--whatever it was that had taken Noburu the satisfaction. Closing her eyes, June tried to hold onto that notion as best she could, just that notion and nothing else. She clenched her teeth, and her fists, and bowed her head. She was trying to be tough.

What she looked like, from the outside in, was a girl breaking down in despair.

Maki just shook her head. There was no offense to take as far as she was concerned. It was a long, unpleasant night and compared to what came before this was a simple affair.

"It is possible. However do be aware there's nothing stopping the butterfly from simply taking him again and leaving him there. It's less risky to just expedite the process than gamble that the second time someone will make it in time to help." Though that was just conventional wisdom, and it depended on people more or less stuck in town. "Though I suppose if that were the case you'd be relatively safe if you left Nagashima at once after that?"

But above all else, June wasn't taking that well at all. So she offered. "There is not an insignificant number of people who have been affected by this that upon surviving their ordeal elect to simply go on as though it never happened." It wasn't the most comforting thing, but it was true, even if this had to happen then it6 didn't necessarily have to change everything.
