"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
"Ack--!" The girl doubled over, and fell to her knees, and then slumped back into the car's back tire. The blow hadn't just knocked the wind from her, it had cracked a rib and it would probably bruise badly. With her free hand, Nishiyo clutched at her abdomen and applied a dose of healing to lessen the pain. Nishiyo's smile only returned, wider still, when she confirmed that Yamada was the officer who'd taken the testimony, an expression that contrasted sharply with the grimace she betrayed Yes, of course. There were two Persona-user police officers that Nishiyo had come in contact with, and the other two she was aware of were both male. It would obviously be the female to take the testimony. Comfort reasons, yes, naturally... "The... contingency," she said happily, once her breath had returned, "is for any... situation... in which I ain't alive... and well... and walking around free for twenty-four hours at a stretch. Y'see how that works, right? ...I could be offed by some random unrelated street thug tomorrow afternoon and my associate would see that as a sign... And one more thing--" The smile vanished. Her face went completely flat, but, notably, her eyes didn't change at all in the transition. "Don't think ya can scare me with death threats, Officer-chan. I could not give a single fuck. It's like Benkei said, I'm a dead woman walkin'. I just... needta walk around a little bit more before I go. Unfinished business, don'tchaknow, that's what ghosts're about, right?" The girl leaned back against her car, and closed her eyes. Her right hand was still holding tight to the key ring. Calmly, and unsmilingly, she asked in an impatient, deadpan tone: "So: do I drive away, or is Chika-chan always gonna be known as that whore who let herself be strung up upside-down with--well. Y'don't need me goin' inta the details, right?" |

She closed her eyes, there was one last option. It was a tool of last resort but…having Chika Nakadachi's life ruined and letting this sociopath who felt she had nothing to lose that was one of the few things keeping her in check? That was also unacceptable. So, as reluctant as she was, there was really no other option. "I see, I am left with no further recourse then…" "You will give me the names and locations of all parties you distributed those photographs to, all duplicates and negatives, as well." Benkei was left as a passive observer. If anything the mention of Chika just helped to remind him, he did promise her he wouldn't do just what he was going to. |

"I'll--what?" Nishiyo's eyes popped open. For a moment they looked lustful--then, she shook her head. "No, no, ya ain't gonna--" Then, defiance entered her eyes, life at last. She straightened up, snarled, and pulled her head back from the car, straightening up so that it was level with the metal above the tire. "Try that again," she hissed, "and I bash my brains against the side o' this car right here. I die, and the pictures get tossed across the school like confetti. And across the Internet." Then, her eyes narrowed. "But let me go, and I'll take at least one piece o' human trash just like me along for the ride t' hell... just one. One more murder. One more death. And then I'll give the order for the pictures to be burned. That's all. My unfinished business... then the ghost can die." Her eyes rolled upward in her skull. There was manic desperation in them now. She didn't look like she had any reservations about using her death as collateral, even if the goal was to stay alive. It was, after all, the only piece she had left on the board. The only piece she had to move... |

"Do that, and you won't get to kill your father, now would you?" Part of constantly keeping an eye on Etsuko's well-being was that she got enough of a glimpse into family life at the Sadako household to have a good guess at who this last person she so desperately wanted to kill was. That would have probably been enough to drag them back from the brink. But she still needed to capitalize. "Simply put? I cannot and will not choose. Letting a murderer like you walk away is unacceptable. Just as it is to allow you to continue blackmailing Chika Nakadachi." There was no more leverage. She even dared to call her bluff, or what she suspected might have been two bluffs. "Your life's worth far too much for you to throw it away for nothing. It's the only life you ever cared about, after all. And who is to say you won't hold onto the photos to keep us at bay, or simply release them anyways out of spite when you're safely away?" She added finally, looking at Nishyo with contempt and an unyielding gaze. "If you must kill yourself, then kill yourself. But you've had your way long enough." It was dangerous very dangerous if she was determined to end her own life, nothing would have stopped her, even if she stopped her from smashing her own brains in she could even bite her own tongue of or some other desperate act. "Just remember, even the dead who stubbornly cling to this world have unfinished business. If you're fine relinquishing that so am I." In truth, Maki saw that letting her go was probably the lesser of the two evils. But that still meant that one evil would have prevailed. If an opportunity to subdue Nishiyo before she could have made good on her threats to herself presented itself, she would have sprung into action, held her down and apprehended her. |

Nishiyo's eyes snapped back to Maki's. "How d'ya know--" Then, it clicked. "Right, right... Spencer musta known more about my family than we gave him credit for... prolly found out about our little child-rearin' methods, eh? Shit, I shoulda just told my parents about the ruse the moment I found out... fucking... wannabe Devil Hunter asshole..." The black-haired girl chuckled, and then shook her head. "I don't get ta kill my dear old dad if I die before that happens. If I get killed here, or if I get killed by you all, or if I get thrown in prison, or if any o' that happens, I don't get ta kill him anyway. If I can use my life as a gamble then I at least have a shot. And how many times do I hafta say...? I don't wanna kill Benkei. I don't care about Chika-chan. I don't even wanna kill Piglet anymore, and that was almost all I could think about a few days ago, killin' her for fuckin' with me. Killin' her for fuckin' with me. She fucked with me, so I wanted her gone. Always at the back o' my mind: she fucked with me, she wanted her gone. But I don't care anymore. I actually don't care. I never thought I wouldn't care. There's only one thing I care about, though..." She sucked in a breath. "And I can't--do it--myself," she breathed stiffly. "I can't. I can't and I don't know how t' make myself do it. But I'll figure it out--I'll definitely figure it out. If my victims get justice, I want justice, too. He's as much t' blame for all of it as I am. He's the reason for all of it, he--" Nishiyo frowned slightly, as she caught sight of faint motion in the corner of her eye. Then, she glanced to the side. "...That's spy kid's girlfriend, ain't it? The fuck's she doin' back here?" muttered the girl distractedly. And if either Benkei or Maki looked to the side, they would see: it was indeed Noburu's girlfriend, the Caucasian girl with the spiky green mohawk. She had just then stepped back into view across the street--she stood there, alone at the mouth of an alley, staring with wide eyes at the scene before her, left hand on the corner of the dumpster at the alley's mouth. She was too far away to possibly make out any faces, but she was also easy to identify from a distance--the consequence of such a loud hairstyle. Noburu was conspicuously nowhere to be seen... |

"…Kuro Matsumoto." It was a shot in the dark, but Kuro was already helping Amaya with her revenge, and as far as she knew, Nishyo was her best friend from Osaka, of course she'd be sympathetic. She was the type who'd go with a backmail plot with a little convincing and perhaps some cash to make it worth her while. For all he knew, she just hired some random trash from wherever for the deed, but Kuro's name is the first that came to mind to Benkei, it was just a guess. Maki listened to everything she said impassively. The only betrayal of her rising anger was a throbbing vein on her forehead. To think she had the audacity to play victim after everything she's done… And then, there was apparently the presence of Hollyfield again, Maki did not take her eyes off Sadako for a moment. "Watanabe-san, could you see about that?" "Hmm? Yeah, sure, sure…" So he approached her. For obvious reasons not happy at all to see her, but also not obviously threatening, the mask was done, and it was just him once more. "You are right, Sadako. Justice does cut both ways. However, because you were raised to be a monster doesn't excuse any of the decisions you yourself made of your own volition. Nor do you get any special privileges for a tragic backstory." She spoke evenly, calmly. She'd tried physical threats, supernatural coercion and now she would try simply rhetoric. Useless as that might be. "And for what? You want to escape to what? Try and likely fail to accomplish anything? You're hardly a criminal mastermind Sadako. Your father did you two disservices he raised you to be a monster and a half-confident one at that." She had to get to the point. "Now…if you really wanted to hurt him, and not some more desperate scratching. You should attack his organization: Cooperate with the police as a witness against him?" She hoped it to be a light a third option, a possible way out for her and the fact that unlike the other two options: it suited Maki's sensibilities just fine. |

"Matsumoto? Her?" Nishiyo scoffed, now openly laughing, a derisive sound, devoid of humor, simply an expression of how ludicrous the idea was. "She's sell me off for a nickel if she had a chance, and all I've heard from her every time I've talked is how little progress she's been making trying to figure out who the killer is. She was friends with Amaya, you know? Because they both lost family and they're both obsessed with avenging them. Kuro just never managed to find a target to obsess over." The black-haired girl shook her head, and then looked back across the street. Benkei walking across the street, to meet with mohawk girl. Where was spy kid, anyway? Probably looping around the other side of the motel, some kind of pincer approach, a rudimentary street punk attempt at tactics. Trying to be smart and trying to pretend they have consciences. Adorable little street trash... "Work as a witness," Nishiyo scoffed. "Go to the police. If I thought that'd work, I'da done it years ago. Witnesses only ever wind up as criminals or corpses 'emselves. I'm not goin' down unless he's in a grave with me. Then we can both burn in the underworld together." The black-haired girl looked up. "You're not a very good policewoman, are ya, Officer-chan? Here y'are, off-duty, holdin' a gun t' a criminal the law didn't catch, ready t' pull the trigger. Can't even stay your hand for the sake o' one high school girl's dignity and well, future employment status, that's a thing, too. It's that kinda black-and-white thinkin' that makes vigilantes like them Black Hoods, ain't it? If it were that Inspector friend o' yours, he'd know when t' let go. When t' push and when t' pull back. Solomon, the 'wise king,' heh..." --- Across the street, June pulled back, eyes still on the scene across the street. She was pretty sure that was Sadako on the ground, but who was that with her? And this guy--she pulled back, but he didn't seem to be making any hostile moves. If he had a gun, too, though-- "What's going on over there?" June hissed. "Are you guys with the police? That doesn't look how police operate--" She glanced past Benkei again. "Did--did Noburu catch up with you guys? I don't know where he is, I turned my back and he walked off while I wasn't looking..." |

Maki was not interested in hearing all of her venous tirade. She repeated what she did before: Driving the but of her gun into Nishyo's gut. At that point, it was either that, or attempt to blast off one of her legs. If it had the desired result, she would have of course taken the keys. "Fine. That's fine. Chika Nakadachi's future is worth more than your life. So leave and don't you ever return. Go back to Osaka and die in a ditch. Now go. walk away." --- "I don't have to answer shit." He spat back. "Like I don't know who left me in that fucking room." But he vanished out of nowhere? Well of course he fucking did… "Shit, I might know where he is. I'll go get him, and you're waiting here." He had to run to the goddamn ruins and he sure wasn't looking for any company, especially not her. He wasn't looking forward to making sure someone he didn't even like didn't die in the ruins, but there was no time to waste, the first chance he got he was walking towards the outskirts. |

Nishiyo coughed and choked, then spluttered and bent over. She gasped and hacked. And she held onto the keys for dear life. "Not... Osaka... here... can't leave. Parents won't let me. Until... exams..." She coughed. "Overseer. They've had--watching me--" Another cough. Nishiyo stumbled up to her feet, her legs wobbling. She stared at Yamada. Stared. Then, she looked down at the key ring in her hand... "I get it," she whispered, "you want me to not have a car... you want me to be easy to catch... alright then..." Her fingers opened, and the key ring fell out, onto the ground, clinking to the pavement. Panting, supporting herself on the side of the car as she turned to walk away, pumping Dia into her stomach to ease the pain, to fix the broken lower ribs, Nishiyo said what she intended to be her final parting words to the policewoman: "I'll walk..." --- "We--we got a message out as soon as we could!" June blurted out, backing up a step. The fact that the woman across the street chose that exact moment to ram a shotgun into her employer's stomach didn't help her courage levels much, but she was too worried about Noburu to put up a tough front right now. "We were hired by you guys for this, don't act like we're--I mean--" The knowledge that she had willingly conducted the first abduction without knowing they were spies was an awkward thing to stomach at this moment. The look Officer Yamada had given her in the hospital-- "You know where--hey! HEY!" June called after Benkei made to run. "Don't you dare--get back here! GET BACK HERE!" Of course, she chased after him. Of course, she wasn't going to be dissuaded. Wouldn't be dissuaded. Would never be turned away from going after Noburu. If he'd gotten in some kind of trouble over this, it was because he'd gotten into this mess in the first place, and as always, he'd only gotten into it because he couldn't stand to let her or Shouta go it alone. |

"You're over thinking it. I just want to deprive you of the convenience of driving." She was only human after all. Be it wounded pride, or frustration that it was the only thing she could do. Or perhaps it was simply that despite knowing it was the only way she wouldn't accept allowing it any other way. At any rate? She was to be on foot. Maki put her foot on the keyring and watched her leave, slinging the shotgun over her shoulder. When she was far enough away her attention would have turned back to Benkei and June. ---- "Cool, have it your way." He said, stopping where he stood, folding his arms in an obviously uncooperative way. "Either you let me go, alone and make sure he's alright or I ain't going no fucking where and we just take our chances." He added. "It's all the same time me, so if that's how you wanna do it, that's how we'll do it." Bunch of bullshit, it was just wasting his time. |
