"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
Kamina's Zan spell blew the Maya's mask into pieces, and the Shadow melted away, and Noburu Nakano watched. Watched in dawning comprehension, as the pieces finally came together in his mind. This was the place, this was the place where those magic people got their magic powers. The butterfly rumor--he'd heard it ages ago, and discarded it, but now that I thought about it... ...He could remember a butterfly. He'd been with June. They'd just left a motel in which Sadako had taken a prisoner, probably dead by now, and it would be on his head for the rest of his life if it were so. And he'd stepped back, covering his eyes with his hands. June had been counting her money, but not actually counting it: she kept counting the same bills over and over without holding the numbers in her head, it was as much a distraction as a practical task to complete... ...and then... Here he was. Which meant he, he was-- "Ha..." he breathed, moving away from the corner and slumping down the wall into a sitting position, resting his arms on his knees. "Ha ha..." The roaring in his mind, it made sense. He was hearing it from inside his head because it was something inside of him. That magic, that power that turned people into monsters. Jiro, that boy from before, was one of them. And now Noburu was, too. And that was it. He was a freak of nature now. Not that it changed much. He wondered if it was safe for him to leave this place, though. If maybe, the world would be better off with one less magic-wielding delinquent running around Nagashima. Noburu sat silently against the wall, making no noise and pretending he didn't exist. With luck, the other boy would move along in another direction, and Noburu would be able to slip off, somewhere else, and figure out this mad situation on his own. He neither trusted nor desired the help of another person who had these powers--no doubt they would sermonize or try to convince him that he was one of them now, that it was all normal, or that they weren't the monsters people thought they were. It was all relative. It didn't matter... Noburu closed his eyes, trying to think. Where was June...? June wasn't lost somewhere in this place too, was she...? |

The door on the far side of the room exploded, something heavy was hurled though it with tremendous force, enough to leave it pinned to a wall. There was enough time to make out just what it was…or what it once was: Human. Now it was pale, and feral and with black goo spilling out of it's eyes and nostrils and mouth. Once a young man in a high school uniform… There was just enough time to make that out before with a loud bellow someone rushed in though the hole and collection of splinters that used to be a door, He punched the once-human creature square in the chest with bone-shattering force. It crumpled down and twitched a bit before black ooze, not blood, spilled out of it. Aside from the weird headgear he would have been very recognizable to Noboru as the person he helped leave to Nishiyo not long ago: Benkei watanabe. "Noburu Nakano…GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE! That green-haired airhead of yours is waiting for you back at the motel. I'll be damned if I came all this way to bring he back a corpse!" His voice was loud, angry, he looked down at another of the creatures he had by the ankle with the hand he hadn't used to finish off the other. This time it looked like it was once female, it was hissing and flailing its clawed hands at him. Despite the fact he was clearly grappling with it, Benkei seemed as if he'd momentarily forgotten about the second Vile Larvae. |

Jiro got back on his feet. Brushing off dust and the like. He shook his head and scowled. "Stupid fucking shadows with their constantly having goddamn fire spells." He continued to grumble obscenities until someone threw a shadow through a door. Jiro was never one to dish out compliments willy nilly, but that was awesome. He'd been expecting the librarian. It was a stranger instead. "Noburu Nakano? Oh, you mean Redhead over there. Yeah you, don't try and hide I fucking see you. Come on, let's get you out of here before you get killed. You wouldn't be the first though. Waiiit a min...oh fucking shit it's you. Come on then. Let's get you back to your girlfriend." |

Noburu's eyes opened when he heard a crashing sound--apathy was washed away by pure self-preservation instinct and adrenaline. The fact that the dragon in his head roared again, all the more viciously this time, was not lost on Noburu. He leapt to his feet and peeked around the corner again, and there, in the room, was Benkei Watanabe... except he was wearing a ludicrous piece of headwear, for whatever reason, and there was-- ...There was a dead kid oozing black slime like the stuff that those monsters were mad of. He was calling for Noburu. Somehow, he'd known to look here, and known how to enter, and--and June was safe. June hadn't been dragged down here. But then June must have been the one who'd said something when he'd gone missing. She must have told Officer Yamada, then. When Jiro, the oh so helpful bastard, decided to casually out him, Noburu's upper lip rose in a snarl. And then he stepped out from around the corner, into full view of the chamber. He stood shirtless, his shirt torn and bloody and slung casually over one shoulder like a jacket on a warm day. Hairless, muscled frame and dragon tattoo were clearly visible in the glow of the florescent lights--and so, too, was the dull-eyed look in the boy's eyes. "Do not," he said in a half-angry, half-weary voice, "call my girlfriend an airhead." A pause. "So she wasn't lured down here with me. She's safe. June is safe, right? Just tell me she's safe..." Noburu tried, he honestly did, to keep his eyes on Benkei's face. One would think the mask would draw his attention well enough to make that easy, but there was the matter of Jiro, who'd summoned some kind of spirit to kill the slime monster... and there was the matter of the struggling monster schoolgirl, grappling with Benkei, savage... corrosive. The red-haired boy's free hand was clenched at his side, and inevitably, he found himself staring at the Vile Larva. Staring, and feeling more than a little bit sick. |

"Fuck you, motherfucker. I'll call her whatever I want to." He spat back, full of fury after a night that started badly when he was already tired and wasn't getting much better. "One second…" The Larvae was getting a bit frisky. Heracles appeared behind him and gave him another Tarukaja after his last lapsed, and with that he lifted the shadow that was once a waifish girl with one hand and slamed her head down on the ground with all his strength. Time and time again. Eventually the head just vanished into a black puddle and he dropped the twitching remains. "She's fine, back at the motel you were gonna leave me to fucking die at. Officer Yamada's with her. Since she didn't run off after me here, she's not the one we should be worrying about." He folded his arms. "So, can we hurry this up? Get your damn Persona already so we can call it a day, that fuckin' butterfly drags you out here again and you're on your fucking own as far as I'm concerned. He was angry, and on the rush of fighting those things again, and a big part of him couldn't accept that that bitch Sadako just got to walk away and a million other things were going on in his mind at that time. So it was no surprise he'd only really regarded Jiro after he had a moment to calm down. "Oh, who're you?" |

"Jiro, who're you?" Well it looked like this training session was turning into a rescue operation. "Oh and Red? Best to not pick fights with Null Physical dudes. Am I right guy?" Really, there wasn't any other explanation for him just standing there. Taking the shadow's hits like nothing. That or he was a masochist or something. Who knew? "He could just as easily do that to you. Nobody would really know either. Shadows probably eat the ones that get killed down here." He couldn't imagine the town if every single persona user made it out of here alive. He shook his head and snorted. "Then again, looks like Guy over here's been asked to be your walk buddy." Jiro jerked his thumb in Benkei's direction. "So come on then. Best to make sure you don't get eaten by shadows." |

Noburu's teeth ground together. His eyes--normally pale green--flickered white-gold, and heard an indignant snarl sound in his head. It was a proud and haughty sound... "No, it's much more courageous for 'null physical guys' to go around antagonizing people who don't have strange powers or protections..." Noburu said through his teeth, giving Jiro a narrow-eyed look. Then, focusing on Benkei again, he forced his voice to volume to lower, his tone to calm, and his teeth to actually separate when he spoke. "You know," he said stiffly, "full well that I was hired to do exactly what I did, by that damned police officer. I assume since you're here, you either used your power and killed her--good riddance--or that help came. Because I did call help..." Noburu took a step forward, his eyes flashing white again. His voice became distorted momentarily, the sound of that indignant snarl audible for just a second as the volume of his voice rose again. "And I don't appreciate being brushed aside when I'm risking my life and my friends' lives every second I'm in the same room as that bitch. So, are you going to explain why the hell I should even trust you--" Noburu flung his shirt over his shoulder and onto the floor in front of him. It landed flat on the floor, where the long, bloodsoaked slash across the back was clearly visible--a slash that didn't correspond to any injury on Noburu's exposed torso. If the two looked carefully, they would see a bloody, slime-splotched jacket laying in one of the Maya sludge-stains on the floor, as well. "--or will you two be the first things I try this monster out on?" he said. "Better yet--if you are acquainted with that police officer, maybe you can tell me what 'accident' killed my friend. The one she's hell-bent on not telling us about..." |

"I'm going to have to stop you right there, there's a lot wrong with that assumption." Null physical was hardly the end-all, be-all of protection. Especially there of all places. But, shit, he actually had to stop and calm down and think for a second. The night wasn't good at all, and just being furious and surrounded by things he was free to take it out on was so damn cathartic. So, in no particular order. "Considering he went missing when Miss Charinko did? I'd guess he wound up here and something got to him before someone who could help did. Nobody deserves that kind of shit, and I'm sorry for that." From Noboru to Jiro. About what happened to people who were killed in the ruins. "Well, where do you think those things came from?" He motioned to the two very much mangled Vile Larvae. "They're called Vile Larvae and considering how they're made there's way too many of them for my taste." Back to Noburu, on the subject of Nishiyo. "Bitch is still alive. Let me get into all the details later when I'm calmer. Let's take it one problem at a time for now." Did that get everything? "Now then, this situation as it is now? You're hearing things, right? You're gonna wanna find a mask, and put it on. There's other shit to worry about, but this is the most important." Well, that was all of it, oh, a couple of things. "Yeah, I'm sorry I insulted your girlfriend. She was tough to deal with before, but you mean a lot to her to have her so worked up." Anything else? Right. Back to Jiro. "My name is Benkei." |

"Aw shut the fuck up Red. I ain't dealing with goddamn hostile newbies. I'm outta here. Nice to meet ya Benkei. Catch ya later." With that Jiro turned around and broke into a run. Him being here didn't seem like a necessity anymore. Besides he could always come back for more training later. |

Noburu's hands unclenched. He stared at Benkei, expression fading from anger to... something calmer. Not less hostile, but more calculating. And then, he listened. He didn't even acknowledge Jiro's departure, though the casual cockiness of it tempted Noburu to flare up again. But no. He had to keep his head. Stay calm. Stay... methodical. He wasn't a feral dog. Not some wild animal. He had dignity. He had control. He had purpose. Purpose. Protecting June and Shouta, especially from themselves. That was purpose. But Shouta was gone. And Benkei was telling him it was probably because of these monsters. Nishiyo Sadako was alive, and he needed some kind of mask to use his magic. That explained the stupid headgear, at least. It didn't matter. Magic didn't matter, Sadako didn't matter. These monsters... "I do mean a lot to her," Noburu said flatly. He spread his arms, indicating his own body--or rather, the tattoo spiraling around his torso. "She put a lot of heart into this. It's a shame that most people see this kind of art as scary or disturbing." He lowered his hands, and then looked to his jacket, and then his shirt. Neither article of clothing seemed worth retrieving. "Where are we? Where do these monsters come from, and why doesn't anyone know about them?" |
