I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Kyo had just managed to get out of the way of Manabu's attack, and instead of landing on her, he landed clumsily on the tiled floor, landing on all fours before straightening up a bit. He remained hunched over, seemingly weighed down by the anemone-like mass on his back. A low hiss escaped his mouth, shortly followed by a croaking cackle. It was distorted, but Manabu's voice could still be distinctly heard in the cackle. Probably more worrying to Kyo was the fact that the cackle sounded weak, like he was distressed or in pain.

He leapt to the ceiling again and trained his eye on Kyo as she started moving toward another hallway. He scurried after her, and then stopped some distance away. The tentacles on Manabu's back bristled. The ground began to rumble, and a boulder rose up from the ground with a crash. Manabu cackled again, and the boulder flew through the air toward Kyo.

As Kaede jogged up the side of the hill, all she could think of was how much she'd love to have that car that was clearly sitting by the entrance to the ruins. God, what she would have given to be in that on her way up.

Upon reaching the top of the hill, she bent over and rested her hands on her knees before looking toward Rio and her obvious set up.

"Has everyone else already gone in?" Kaede asked. "What's going on in there? Which way do I go? Do you have any water?" God, she was out of shape. That's what she got for staying out of this shit for so long.

Ryouta followed after Kaede as best he could, also seemingly having some trouble with the whole 'running' aspect. He lined up right behind her as she began to ask Rio for information. He also decided it would probably be better if he waited for the two leader type folk to go ahead and talk first, despite the exasperation Kaede was already exhibiting.

Kakeru and Isoroku showed up soon after that, and thanks to Isoroku's Sukukaja, they managed to catch up without much trouble. They looked at Kaede who asked the mission control, Rio about the situation.

Isoroku seemed a little anxious, but it wasn't about the mission itself, but it was due to her worry regarding the people who were inside. From what she had learned, one of them turned Monster in such a bad time while fighting the strong Shadow inside. She just hoped that they could reach them as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Kakeru displayed a calm expression on his face, as usual. He waited for Rio do tell them about the current situation.

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Kyo had sort of been putting this part of because it was bound to be both A) painful, and B) gross, but as she backed away, she rubbed a hand round the bloodied remains of her blasted right eye, wetting her hand with her own blood. She then brushed back the bangs that normally covered her left eye, one, two, three rough swipes of her hand to keep it swept back and away, so she could see out of her left eye, which was...

...Kind of blurry--maybe that was the poison at work. Kyo was drenched in sweat by now but that was most just the combination of exertion and the shock reaction to her earlier injuries. Manabu sprang back to the ceiling. Kyo drew in breath to call out again.

"Manabu, c'mon, I--shit!"

A boulder. Kyo, who wasn't interested in losing any more body parts, tensed... and then sprang aside. The boulder sailed past, she felt the rush of air displaced by its passing, and crashed loudly someplace out of sight, down the passage she'd planned to try leading Manabu down... but that meant her back was to the wall now.

Burning. Stinging. God, she hated poison.

"Manabu, chill out, calm down," Kyo said. "I'm on your side--" Come on, come on... what else do we know. Stalker, creeper, hates being called a frog, what else, what else...

...Insomnia.

Fuck, what did that even mean? Would that mean sleep magic was more effective or less effective? Probably less. Or maybe more? He'd seemed tired when he showed up--

"Manabu, you're afraid," she said, holding her hands out to the side again. "I get it. I'm afraid, too. We've both screwed things up. Maybe I can't say we're the same, but it was just the two of us that thing was able t' punish for it, none o' the others. It sucks, being shot in the face by your own fuck-ups. But ya need t' get your head on right, Manabu, or this'll just turn inta one more thing you'll regret when we're outta here! Y' don't want that, I know ya don't! Talk t' me, dammit!"

The was obvious frustration in Kyo's voice now, and obvious reluctance. The obvious thing she had to do was fight, attack, knock Manabu out of that form the blunt-force way. Isoroku and Kaede had done it for her. Iemoto had done it for Shizuka. But there was a difference between this and kicking Rei Takeda's face in. That had been something Kyo had done gladly, it had been awesome, kickass.

This was something she didn't want. Manabu was one of the good guys, whatever his face looked like (and boy oh boy was it ugly right at the moment). More than that, he was scared. And if she attacked--if she attacked, he would become even more scared.

This was a complete lose-lose situation. And more to the point, she wasn't sure she could beat this thing by herself in the first place. She was agile, but she couldn't fucking jump from wall to wall or cling to ceilings, she wasn't Spider-Girl or something. Ayane's training hadn't covered giant humanoid tentacle monster-frogs! Maybe Kyo should have had the foresight to ask about that!

Dimly, she heard a scream--an inhuman scream, coming from down the stairs, and winced--she felt her eardrums pound and her teeth rattle in her skull, and she felt her whole body--vibrate, painfully, and then the next moment she felt herself pushed aside, even further from the passageway by some unseen blast of--hell, never mind speculation, she was pushed by the scream. Beneath the pain, as Kyo stumbled to keep her feet, she felt something shift in her mind, but didn't think any more of it. Her attention was fully on Manabu, she could not afford to be distracted right now or this thing would probably kill her. Hell, never mind going on the offense, it was all she could do to stay out of the way of its attacks. If that monster downstairs could hurt her even this far away, too, then--shit, this was bad.

As if determined to prove that things could get worse, a voice cut across Kyo's thoughts at precisely that moment:

You think you can help him? You think you of all people can fix him. You stupid cunt, you don't even want to see how backwards that idea is... you're a girl, and what's more, you're a skank. That's like dangling bacon in front of a fat man's nose the day he resolves to go vegan, isn't it?

Nevan, not now! Kyo mentally snapped.

She didn't even notice that the voice in her head had none of her Persona's sultry wickedness, nor its teasing tones. It was just flat, uncompromising disdain. And it was hers.

A sound, a loathsome, bizarre sound… But more than that, it was actually dangerous at the point of impact, she felt a crushing force as her armor crumpled and scales were sent flying, she was nearly knocked over but avoided it.

And as far as Hanako knew, that was the extent of its ability.

"Daichi, don't drop your guard!"

She didn't do as he asked, instead she quickly slithered after the retreating Shadow. Based off what she knew of it, she had serious doubts it was hurt enough to seriously retreat. It was just as likely that.

"What if it doesn't run away? What if it teleports over to where Kyo and Manabu is, finishes them off with that weird ability of his and comes back to mop us up?"

The penalty for being wrong and still fighting it was prolonged danger. The penalty for being right and letting it go would have been the death of two people. That wasn't a hard choice for Hanako. So she did her very best she keep it in sightas much as possible, conveniently that meant she could contentiously attack it with her Gorgon's Eye attack.

Best Influence.
Rio reached into her cooler, and grabbed a water bottle, which she tossed underhanded to Susaki, then turned her computer toward the others. She spoke quickly: "I've got the mojo wire set up, so healing applied to me gets transferred over to them. They've taken a bit of a beating, but they're alive. Hit me."

She gestured at an area on the first floor.

"Kaerunuma and Charinko are here. Kaerunuma's some kind of frog/tentacle monster thing, so maybe beat him out of that when you get a chance."

She didn't move her hand more than a centimeter, but switched over to the second floor plan. "The super-shadow is here. It just regenerated from being killed, it's immune to physical damage, and fire is less than effective. It did some kind of illusion thing that did damage like a megido: illusions of people that Charinko and Kaerunuma had fucked up with showed up and beat the ever-loving shit out of them, and I don't know if it can do it again, so be careful."

She snapped her fingers and gestured at the entrance.

"Go. Be quick. Shit's getting real."

---

Contrary to Rio's assessment, the Qlippoth seemed to be fleeing. It turned and fired an agilao in Hanako's direction, and then glided around a corner, out of sight.

Right, how could he have been so stupid?

Your entire existence is an exercise in futility.

Well, he stuck the paper in his pocket and turned around. Only to see a fireball streaking toward Hanako.

"Get down!"

Daichi rolled to the side. Which placed him near the wall. He couldn't actually do anything from this angle, if he cast Hama there was a chance to hit Hanako.

Your pitiful attempts at attacking have done nothing so far. How could they harm something now?

Manabu trained his eye on Kyo. He seemed to be shaking, though the continuously undulating mass of tentacles made it hard to see what was going on with him. He backed up on the ceiling, and then dropped down to the floor and paced in a circle for a moment. Kyo's words seemed to have resonated with him...

Whatever had changed with him didn't last long, though, as his eye bugged out again and he took up a more defensive stance again. There were more people now. He could feel them above. The thing was retreating but those people were going to come here and they couldn't come here.

He whimpered and sunk his teeth into his arm again, and a muffled scream could be heard from within his armor. He rocked back and forth, brought his eye down to look at the wound, and then swung it back up toward Kyo again.

At the very least, he wasn't attacking this time.

Kaede grabbed the waterbottle in midair and chugged it as Rio explained the situation. Once she'd hydrated herself, Kaede dropped the bottle on the ground and pulled her mask on.

"I'll pump some Dia spells through Rio; help out everyone down there. Ryouta, you've dealt with Frogface's monster form before, right? You should probably go help out with Kyo," Kaede said, immediately beginning to command the group. Her Persona appeared behind her and the two of them began to glow with a white light as Kaede cast Diarahan on Rio. "Lovebirds, I dunno what you guys can do, but one of you should probably go help out Hanako and what's-his-face."

"Um, I'm not really sure I dealt with it so well the first time..." Ryouta began. "B-but if the Shadow resists fire anyways I'd probably be better off helping those two. I'll do what I can Kaede-san."

He mentally memorized the area Rio pointed to, hoping that his experience with the ruins wouldn't fail him now. Wasting no more time, he ran into the ruins, hoping to find Manabu and Kyo as quickly as possible.

Kakeru nodded when Kaede told them to deal with the super Shadow that Kyo and other person was facing against, and he just sighed when she called him and Isoroku lovebirds. It really couldn't be helped, could it? "Alright, I'm going in."

Before he could get into the ruins, Isoroku spoke. "I'll follow Kakeru too. I'm afraid he'll get lost if I don't help him..." she told the others. Kakeru just nodded before he entered the ruins, followed by Isoroku. As they ran into the ruins, Isoroku cast Sukukaja on Kakeru and then to herself. Isoroku memorized the paths they needed to take to reach the area where they were fighting against the super Shadow.

It would take a while before they could reach them, though.
