I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Manabu had been doing quite well with the whole escaping thing until the world began to spin under him. He grasped the side of the bridge and squeezed his eyes shut as he ran, which slowed him down considerably and put him in perfect position to get barreled over by Daichi. He didn't even have a chance of twisting around into a position for Daichi to grab him and ended up getting slammed to the ground underneath him.

He twisted his head up and opened his eyes to see the Shadow -- Qlippoth -- standing in front of the stairs. It couldn't have moved so quickly. Short range teleportation?

No, think Manabu, think! It had managed to move in front of the stairs. It knew they were trying to escape. It couldn't follow them up, so it was trying to trap them. It was intelligent, it knew, it... oh god, he didn't even know. He was about to die here. He was so scared.

The water wasn't much necessary once the jacket was gone, but it did go some distance toward cooling the burns. The healing spell was more productive: Kyo could feel the patches of pain in her back and her leg fading, but not completely. She wasn't sure she wanted to actually see what the damage looked like, but right now she had to endure it. Every step brought another stinging wave with it...

Dizzy, disoriented. Kyo's first thought was a panic or distress spell of some kind but this didn't feel like that, it just felt like vertigo. She stumbled, closed her eyes for a moment, and managed to keep running, but she lightly bumped Hanako as she did. She could feel pain, though, Dia hadn't healed her burns completely. She could also feel the lukewarm gunmetal of Death's Compass in her hand. Kyo focused on those sensations and opened her eyes. They were running across the bridge, out into the hall, back down toward the stairs.

And there it was, ahead of them, now.

Teleportation. It could head them off. How many times could it do that?! How many? Kyo felt dizzy and almost sick and she knew that this creature had magic, magic, deadly magic, it could burn her to a crisp, it could teleport ahead of her, head her off, magic, magic--

Magic!

But how much, how much?! Teleportation magic, Kira had told Kyo once, it was powerful, powerful, but powerful meant it ate up energy like nothing else, ate up energy, ate ate ate devoured the energy, this couldn't be any different, could it? They needed to escape and if they were to escape they needed this thing to not be able to teleport and not be able to burn and not be able to stop them from going up the stairs and the odds of Sleep or Charm doing the trick were slim but there was another trick she had up her sleeve now, a new trick, even--

Kyo skidded to a halt, and summoned Nevan again. The Leanashe outstretched a hand toward the Arrogant Qlippoth, and smirked. And then, it drew the hand back, beckoning with a finger: the spell that accompanied the motion was the strongest Spirit Drain that Kyo could muster. Kyo, her balance almost completely restored, quickly looked from one member of the group to the next as the spell as cast, trying to take stock of the situation, stuffing the Compass into her pants pocket at the same moment. If it came to it, she might have to use Armored Form--but she could only take two people tops if she used her motorcycle form, and there were three here: Manabu, Daichi, and Hanako. Two of them were people Kyo couldn't ever leave behind; the third was arguably indispensable to the Persona-user community...

Kyo snapped her focus back to the Qlippoth. She was the strongest one here, but this monster and she were horribly mismatched. Physical combat, a specialty she was kind of proud of, was useless; it could fill a hall with fire, one of her weaknesses.

This was bad. Bad. Bad. Why, why hadn't anyone listened when she'd asked for one more powerful user, just one more?! Some new, ominous development in the ruins and those third-tier assholes were going to leave it to the first-tier newfags to sort out?!

Seriously, what the hell?!

She watched it's actions carefully, their only chance was picking up possible tells from this things attacks and using that to avoid the brunt of another spell like that. So she didn't miss it when it was skulking away, not pressing it's advantage or giving pursuit.

She didn't think much of it, not until she was sprinting away and the world suddenly started violently spinning. Hanako barely avoiding flailing her arms into the other young woman as she jostled into Kyo while trying to keep her balance. The result of her aborted attempt to not fall was to stumble down right on her face.

She looked up just in time to see Nevan attack the Qlippoth with a new spell she'd never seen used before. Speaking of that thing, how did it get in front of…

Oh, she'd seen that before. It wasn't so powerful as to warp space though. But it had to hide from them before it could. Like those stupid angel statues but way more potent. She scrambled to her feet and kept her eyes open for anything useful to hem. Think, think, think. Their backs were against the wall, she usually performed well in such situations.

If her assumption was correct, running away was impossible, the second they lost sight of it it'd be on them again. Unless someone stayed back and kept an eye on it. Kyo? She was the strongest, but weak to fire, she'd not have lasted too long. Daichi? He was resistant to fire, yes, but there was no guarantee that was all the Arrogant Qlippoth could do, and even if it was, with only a resistance and not immunity it'd still have gotten him sooner or later due to their differences in strength. That was out of the question as well. She liked the chances of more people getting away if just one of them stayed back instead of two, so…

Rather than panic, she stole a second to clear her mind. "Kyo? I want you and Nakamura-san to make sure Manabu gets out of here okay, I'm going to keep it here. I think it's like those statues around here…" Take your eyes off it for a second and it can be wherever it wanted to be, this really was the worst case scenario.

"Matsushita-san? Are you there?"
She called out on the radio. "I'm going to try and force it out of our way, if this doesn't work, I'm going to need you to lead everyone else on an alternate safe route out while I try to keep it busy." She had to improvise, She cast an Maraqua, the source of it was just behind the thing, and she compressed it with all she had. It was mostly wasted effort: It wouldn't hurt any more than a regular Aqua spell, but hopefully the sheer force of the water would be enough to force it off the stairs, out of the way of the escape route for everyone else, and right into the open…where she could keep a close eye on it.

The fire slid across its surface, and the enemy tried to smother it with its hands, but it didn't help. The spirit drain pulled energy from the Qlippoth, and funneled it into Kyo. The maraqua washed over it, causing it to stumble back slightly, but it didn't lose its footing.

"Got it, looking something up n -- incoming! Never seen this sh--" the radio went silent without ceremony.

A ripple expanded from the Qlippoth, passing silently through the vast subterranean space.

The faint light on the skybridge disappeared, leaving them all bathed in absolute darkness. The sound of the shadows below faded out, either because they had stopped or because their sound had been deadened. Glass tinkled as if someone were walking over it. There was a tension in the air.

There was a click as if the safety had been taken off of a gun, followed by another, and that one closely by another, deeper, and a fourth, deeper still.

Then all hell broke loose.

Flicker.

The lights went up. More people were standing on the bridge, but the light lasted barely long enough to register their presence, let alone who they were.

A blue haired foreign boy in a long coat swung a sword, aimed at Kyo Charinko's midsection. A large young man aimed an elephant gun at Manabu, and fired.

It went dark again.

The light reappeared. A man in a suit wearing sunglasses raised a revolver and fired on Kyo from her left. A girl with long dark hair wearing a Taiyoutono uniform raised and aimed a bow at Manabu, releasing a shaft.

Darkness once more.

When the light came up again. A young man wearing spandex and a mask swung a staff at Manabu, swinging for his head. A tall, slim young woman in a Taiyoutono uniform with straight red-brown hair raised a rifle and fired upon Kyo from her right.

Darkness again.

Light once more: A shapely, muscular woman with blond hair down to the middle of her back struck at Manabu with a spear that twisted and flexed in a serpentine fashion, somewhat like a whip. An older woman who closely resembled Kyo stood in front of her, and struck at her face with an open hand.

Darkness.

Light: A delicate-looking young man with glasses shoved Manabu backwards in a fashion that suggested he didn't know much about how to fight.

Darkness.

Light: A grizzled older man with dark hair and circles under his eyes, who closely resembled Manabu, raised a revolver, and fired directly at the boy's stomach.

Darkness.

Light: A pair of smirking young men in Taiyoutono uniforms stood in front of Manabu, and moved in unison. They drew knives and struck. One went low, and one went high.

The lights went back up, and the figures who had appeared were gone, leaving just the four persona users and the Qlippoth.

[Arrogant Qlippoth has cast Grudge: Causes selective almighty damage multiple times to all enemies. A single Tier 1 attack for each reversed social link, and a single Tier 2 attack for each broken social link. Manifests as ghostly versions of the S. link that attack the subjects in a variety of ways. This doesn't change the type of damage, though.

Not all of Manabu's appeared because it was getting ridiculous and I think Fish will appreciate be being too lazy to look up the appearance of all of the characters with whom Manabu has ruined his relationships.]

What the fuck!

To say that Daichi was confused would be an understatement. Flashes of light, people appearing and attacking Manabu and Kyo out of thin air. What was he supposed to do? How was he going to react to these seemingly instantaneous attacks? It had to be the Qlippoth, it had to be. He didn't know how, but he knew that he do something. He couldn't just stand here like an idiot while people were getting attacked. For whatever reason, the people weren't attacking him or Hanako. So that meant he was free to act. He summoned up Michael, casting an Agi at the Qlippoth. He had no idea if it nulled Fire. Then again, the Agi wasn't supposed to actually harm it. It was a distraction, or at least he hoped it would be.

"Armored form! All of you!"

Sure, he wasn't the smartest person around. Not by a long shot. Still, if Kyo and Hanako used Armored form then maybe they all had a chance of getting out of here. He had no idea if Kyo and Manabu had even....no they did survive. The other option was impossible.

"Come on you big ugly son of a bitch! It's me you want!"

He just needed to buy a few seconds of time for them to transform. Just long enough for them to activate it and then they could get out of here. Then they could all get out of here safely.

I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Think. Think. The Shadow had teleported. Kira had been able to teleport; she'd always talked about how much it tired her out doing that. Teleporting expended too much energy to use often; that's why the Reaper couldn't teleport, that's why very few people could use it, so that meant it was taking a risk by using that spell. What was Hanako talking about? It had moved out of sight before using that? Someone had to keep an eye on it. Take a risk, then run for their lives. Sukukaja, they had to have someone who could use it. Not him; he had no Persona, and he was too slow.

Manabu rose, using the side of the skybridge as a support. He didn't have the energy to argue with Hanako's plan as he walked up to them. He reached into his bag, his fingers brushing against a chemical filled glass bottle, as Rio's commentary suddenly cut out.

The room was dark.

The light came on, and facing Manabu was Akiko, his elephant gun pointed at his face.

Manabu dove for the side, but the skybridge was too narrow and the spell too fast for him to get far, and the attack struck him in the chest, knocking him against the side of the bridge once again. The lights flickered out, giving him only a split second to comprehend what had happened. Akiko-- why him, why now?! Why--

The lights flickered back on again, and this time the face pointing its weapon at Manabu was one very familiar to him. He stared, wide eyed, at Haruka's form, and gasped, "No, not you, anyone but--"

The arrow struck him through the chest. Manabu coughed as he was knocked back again, and there was a metallic taste in his mouth.

Dark again.

Light again. This time it was Okawa, swinging his staff toward Manabu's head too fast for him to move out of the way of. He was too slow, far too slow for the lightning vigilante. His false eye rattled in his head.

Dark again. Light again. Ayane's spearlike-whip hit home, leaving long snake-like wounds across his body. Dark again. Light again. This time it was Satosu, who he'd hated for the stupidest of reasons. Dark again.

With the light came the form of Manabu's father. He raised his gun and shot, and the almighty bullet struck Manabu in the chest, breaking a couple ribs with it. Before the dark came, Manabu yelled, "Fuck you!" and coughed a red mist. The light came one last time, bringing with it the Nakagawa twins, who stabbed their knives into his stomach. He collapsed against them, and when their bodies disappeared, he fell against the ground and continued to cough.

"Fuck... fuck, fuck, fuck!"

He tried to get to his feet, clutching his wounds as he did. Everything was dizzy; he felt like he was going to throw up. At some point during this, his fake eye had rolled out of place and stuck, making him look somewhat wall-eyed. Manabu looked around, looking toward Kyo, then toward Hanako and Daichi, and then toward the dizzying form of the Qlippoth. He breathed heavily.

He couldn't... he couldn't die here... Was this his punishment for his hubris? Or for an even worse sin?

As his brain tried to shut off, Manabu heard Daichi yell something about armored form. In the depths of panic, one's survival instincts kick in, and the brain redirects every bodily function toward supporting a fight or flight instinct. For Manabu, who normally was intelligent enough to reconsider his next actions, all he could think about was trying to survive. All he could think about was the fact that his Persona had ascended. He had an armored form. If he could take that armored form, he would live.

He stretched out his hand and concentrated on trying to summon his mask. He called out to his Persona, begging it to appear.

And, as if it answered his begging, he felt something appear on his face.

"Yes! Yes!" Manabu cried, until he lifted his hand to his face and realized that the shards that had appeared there were morphing around his face. And then the realization hit him. "No! No, stop! Get it off! Get it--" The mask completely covered his mouth, muffling his screams of protests. He put his hands against his face, covering where his eyes would be on the other side of the mask as he rose like a marionette held by some unknown puppeteer.

The mask became like liquid, flowing across Manabu's body and forming into a dark colored mail. Another layer of fluid mask rushed down his shoulders and became a set of spiked shoulder-plates and chestpiece, shortly followed by clawed gloves on his hands. The fluid mask continued down his body as Manabu's muffled screams began to taper off, and the chain-mail formed around his legs, shortly followed by greaves around his legs.

Something bulged against his back. He hunched over as a hundred swinging, venomous tentacles burst free of the armor and wriggled in the air. The armor fully covered Manabu's body at this point, and the scream that had been tapering off for sometime finally ceased. His hands dropped away from his face and he slumped, like he'd been cut free of his strings. His hair, which the growing mask had left uncovered, hung loosely around his face, but it didn't fully obscure the single eyeball that now adorned the mask.

There was an audible crack as the mask split at the middle, and a long, froglike tongue lolled out of Manabu's mouth and slapped against the ground. He laughed, a croaking cackle, and swung his eye around to look at the gathered group, focusing individually upon Kyo, Daichi, Hanako, and lingering on the Qlippoth long enough for the monster to leap into the air and grab onto the ceiling of the skybridge. He began to scurry across the ceiling like some kind of perverse lizard and was making a beeline for the stairway the Qlippoth was guarding.

It looked like they could handle this, Kyo thought. Even the first-tier magic her companions had at their disposal was producing noticeable damage. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't like the Reaper or the humanoid Shadows. What it was was within their power to defeat, just not with such a disadvantaged party. They would need to return here with a group that could withstand fire, which probably meant she herself was out, a thought that infuriated her, that she wasn't needed, that she was pointless, that it would all happen while she was somewhere else again, like Chouko, like the park, like the Russian Incident, like Isoroku's encounter with Aleksandria and like Ryouta's confession to Suzume...

Just once, just once, Kyo wanted to be there, wanted to help stop the bad things from happening instead of always always being too late to the party, too late to do more than scrounge around in the mess trying to fix everyone--

That was when it happened. Darkness. Kyo froze in place, hand extended to cast a Zionga spell at the monster. For an instant she didn't know what to do--if it was a Dark spell she was safe from damage, but it didn't feel like one, and she couldn't see--

And then there was light. Suddenly, two people she recognized--Akiko, who she'd only briefly met on two occasions, and that Spencer idiot--were just suddenly there, and Kyo swore. "More fucking fakes--?!" she managed to get out before Shane Spencer swung his replica Devil May Cry sword at her midsection. Kyo skipped backward, but the blade grazed her chest, cut through her clothes, cut through her skin, but it didn't feel like a blade, it felt--different. Solid and not-solid at the same time--

Blackness. Then, light. Akiko and Spencer had been replaced by Ayane and... Shin Imoto. Kyo's attention snapped to her mentor on instinct, something she regretted immensely when Shin leveled a revolver and fired. Kyo was too slow to react this time--another backwards skip only resulted in the bullet striking her shoulder. But it didn't feel like a bullet, or at least not what Kyo thought one might feel like--it felt more like a punch to the shoulder that just happened to burrow to the bone and scrape it a little.

Kyo stumbled backward through her attempt to dodge, stumbled and fell with the force of the attack. Blackness engulfed everything again, before she even felt her butt hit the ground. She had landed about as gracelessly as a newbie in the middle of her first fight... when was the last time she'd bruised her bottom down here, anyway?

It was with Hotaru and Creepazoid, she thought dazedly, and randomly. When Hotaru asked me to look into Ryuunosuke and Nana and stuff...

The light jolted her back to the present, and, one hand clutching at her bleeding shoulder in pain, she looked up. She didn't even register the other familiar face that had appeared, and was also attacking Manabu for some reason. At this point she could barely even process that Manabu was in danger and that she should be doing something.

Suzume to her right, aimed down a rifle scope at her head with a sniper rifle. All of Kira's worst fears, except directed at Kyo because she was a conniving, manipulative backstabber and if anyone deserved Suzume's wrath it was her, not Ryouta and not Kira and not Sora, her--

Kyo turned her head and stared straight at the rifle for what felt like an eternity, and couldn't will herself to move away. That is, not until Suzume's finger twitched in the trigger guard and instinct kicked in, and she threw herself to the left. Too slow again, though, and the next thing Kyo knew was blinding pain through the right side of her face...

...Literally blinding pain, which snapped her head back and to the right. Her studded-leather mask was torn from her face--it tumbled through the air and came to a rest on the floor a few yard back and to the side, near the wall. She felt pain in her neck with the motion, not neck-breaking but close, and she fell to the ground in a heap, screaming and clapping a hand to her right eye, which... wasn't there anymore, or maybe half of the eyeball was, but it had been ripped out and the rifle-shot had ripped straight through the bone on the far right side of her eye on the way through, too. The result, one way or the other, was a bloodied socket that couldn't see a fucking thing and hurt like hell, in a very familiar way.

Vaguely, as her hair fell out of her left eye and she scrabbled at the ground to push herself up, as everything went dark again, Kyo realized what had happened and she pushed herself up on her hands and knees. "Dammit, Suzume!" she growled under her breath, rolling over, pushing up, setting one foot beneath her. "Your aim sucks--"

The light came on, and Kyo's heart jumped so badly in her chest that she jumped, too--right back to her feet, putting up her hands in a warding gesture, but before she could even think a coherent thought... her mother.

Her... mom.

Standing there. Right in front of her. Anger and disapproval and disdain and all of it all of it was her fault because she'd been born with green hair and just didn't have the right wiring in her brain to be the perfect proper girl mom had wanted, all that labor and pain to give birth to Kyo and she'd won herself a wild little rapscallion she could never be proud of or pleased with--

Slap!

Eri Charinko struck her daughter with an open-handed slap that struck with disproportionate force, and again with that solid-yet-not-solid quality to it. Kyo's head snapped to the left this time, and her body went with it. No sooner had she gotten to her feet than she was on the ground again, this time making no move to get up... even as the darkness returned, and then light, and right there in her field of vision, more apparitions were appearing to assault Manabu...

She shook with pain. Her stomach bore a shallow gash that barely registered, but her shoulder, which she had landed on, was on fire, along with her right eye and her jaw--all of it was on fire and she couldn't think anything beyond a basic comprehension of what was going on.

Those four. Spencer, Shin, Suzume, and her own mother. People she was on poor terms with. No, people she had been on good terms with at one point, or had cared about, or something, and then fucked everything up with. That spell was their anger and hate for her.

Then--

Ah, I see, Kyo thought dully as the Nakagawa brothers took shape and attacked, and the spell's effect finally ended. He has more than me. And the other two... the other two aren't massive fuck-ups like we are... the piglet and the froggy, heheheheh...

Kyo heard Daichi call out for her to enter Armored Form, but she couldn't force herself to focus, she needed to stand up, stand up--

Rolling over onto her left side, she looked up. The Arrogant Qlippoth was still there. Still--

"Yes! Yes!" she heard Manabu cheering. Her eye snapped to the side, she had to hold her hair out of the way to see, and she realized a split second before he did what was happening. He had called out his mask, but it wasn't Armored Form he had evoked. His mask was eating him, devouring him, he was changing--

She needed to do something needed to do something--

Kyo managed to sit up and flailed an arm in the direction of the Qlippoth, still clutching her injured eye with the other. "You--get--GET BACK!" she shrieked. Bolts of purple lightning, three bolts--Mazio--struck at the area around the Qlippoth. She couldn't aim, couldn't concentrate on aiming, but she could spray and pray, that was simple, that was easy.

Manabu's transformation completed, and he leapt to the ceiling. Dimly, Kyo watched him retreat, thinking, Ahaha, he turns into a frog, a frog. That's almost as good as me turning into a fucking BIKE, hehehehe... oh jeez...

Her face hurt, her face hurt so--so much--her jaw felt like it might have cracked, but all of her teeth were there at least... probably...

"Out of the way you fucking asshole!" She was preparing to do it again, a little more precise, a little angled to the left, it looked like if she did it just right she was able to tip it over it's center of gravity…did gravity even apply to this thing as they knew it?

Didn't matter. She didn't even get a chance to try again, there was darkness. Her serpentine eyes blinked and where…what?"

The first time it happened, she had no idea who the huge young man who attacked Manabu was, but it was an image of that idiot Shane Spencer that swung for Kyo. At once she put up her guard, expecting one of the people she just caught a glimpse of to come for her. …but they never came.

Darkness, new image: That was another young woman she never saw before went after Manabu. But who shot at Kyo? "De-Detective Imoto?!" Of course she recognized him, he was Naoya's uncle and the most reliable policeman she'd ever met. He was probably pretty pissed at her too but…

…but they were never really close to begin with.

Another flicker of darkness.

This time she was sensing a pattern clearly now. Someone else she didn't know was going after Manabu this time. A vigilante, she guessed. While that was Suzume! Suzume for sure. She'd seen her glowering in the Archery Club far too many times not to recognize her!

One more… yes! She and Daichi were safe. It was other Persona users that you…

Sensei?! The hell did Manabu do to Ayane-sensei?! Even more Shocking was that was miss Charinko. The rest of it involved those bastard twins, and more people she didn't know going after Manabu. Popular guy. One of those even looked like he was related to Manabu.

…yes! Yes she had it. But then Daichi shot out a suggestion for Armored Form. "What? No! Not yet…!" It was a huge gamble for her to find out what hers did in a worst-case scenario. Kyo's was useful, as was Hiroko's. But…they were all different, that was no place to test out new abilities on.

More useful than that? She turned to Manabu, ready to heal him as much as her abilities could have. She almost sighed with relief when she saw he had his mask again. He might have…

No.

'Something's wrong!'

"Daichi! Stay back from Manabu!"
She had taken several steps back herself. That wasn't an Armored Form at all…

He was gone, she only managed to get off a passing Dia. Hopefully he wouldn't find someone else and savage them or worse make it out of the ruins and start a rampage somewhere.

Kyo…Kyo was badly hurt and this thing was really the worst person for her to fight. Kyo was the only one who had a real had a chance of subduing Manabu's monster form, and that would have conveniently kept them both out of harms way if the Arrogant Qlippoth tried that weird skill again.

She blurted out quickly, and peppered her words with Dia spells to Kyo. "That thing attacked you by using your own ruined relationships with other Persona Users against you. I'm on good terms with every user I know, same for Daichi! You need to get the hell out of here and go after Manabu!"

Despite the fact that with every passing moment, it became more and more likely she was going to die by this things hands she stubbornly clung to a sense of serenity. If she had to die, she could have at least robbed this thing the satisfaction of seeing her break first, and that was incentive enough to keep her cool.

"Daichi and I are going to get past it somehow and get the hell out of here, so don't worry about us…"

Ah! One last thing! "Try and contact Matsushita again! Let her know the situation! Now get past it, Now! We're counting on you to do that and not get killed here, Kyo!"

The Arrogant Qlippoth staggered back at the bolts of lightning that struck it and the area around it. The linoleum tiles and shattered glass melted, small fires appearing as some of it reached a critical temperature. Thankfully for the three remaining sane persona users, it decided to deal with the stranger issue.

The strange shadow seemed to track Manabu's movements across the ceiling with its blank, empty eye-holes, its head sliding to focus. It raised its right hand, and fired a stream of needles seemingly conjured from nowhere that flew in a swarm toward the transformed young man. A fairly standard spell, after the last one -- a Torrent Shot.

Alright, they had a chance! Manabu was in Armored form, so they could do it!

"Daichi! Stay back from Manabu!"

"What? But he's Armored!"

Regardless, he took a few steps back. Wait a minute, Manabu was running away? Strange appearance and extra appendages aside, Daichi had also thought that Armored form gave the user a giant boost in power. So just maybe, they could fight this thing back just until they could escape. Oh shit now the Qlippoth was attacking Manabu. If he'd been watching a film or reading a book, he would have been happy that the person trying to run without helping was the primary target now. He was not though, and his job was to keep the other boy alive. So he summoned Michael to cast a Hama, and then another and then another.

"Back here asshole!"

If it came down to it. He'd abandon Manabu down here. Only if he absolutely had to, only if it was his life against Kyo's or Hanako's. It didn't seem to be coming down to that. So he stood his ground. Trying to draw the attention back to himself.
