Right. Make sure Kaerunma-san doesn't die and don't be a hero. I can pull this off...right?

The building sense of dread disagreed. Still Daichi nodded at Kyo and accepted the walkie talkie and map. Oh? What they could do?

"Err...I believe I am weak to Ice. Though I can withstand Physical attacks more than the average. The main magic I have is...fire though. I also have a weak healing ability."

Right, just had to keep Kaerunma alive. The urge to run because he was in way in over his head was still there though, but he would manage. He had to manage. They needed his help.

I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Manabu took a walkie-talkie and a map, frowning at it. It looked fairly similar to his own maps, but he hadn't been down here for so long that he couldn't tell. Plus, there'd been murmurings about new paths having been opened, so he'd likely have to revise his current maps to match.

"I null electricity, no weaknesses," Manabu said. "Keep in mind, I have no idea if that's still in affect at the moment. This is my first time ever having to deal with this kind of thing, and my resistances don't exactly pop up in normal life much."

He took up a position behind the rest of the group. "Alright, lead the way. I'll be right behind you all."

"Oh, he did that, huh?" That's how he spends some of his time? Hanako imagined there was more drinking and less cartography. Still, she accepted the map and the walke-talkie her eyes focused on where they were relative to the map's representation of places.

"Not to be a nay-sayer, but maybe we should take this opportunity to have a few plans if things go south? Like, if we get separated, could we plan to regroup here?" The room she pointed to on the map had an obvious-five-sided shape and was reasonably close to a couple of entrances. It seemed like a good spot for that sort of thing to her.

"I'm here, you don't need to worry too much about getting too lost. I can scan from each of you until I turn off the Mojo Wire," Rio said. "It seems that -- other than the weird shit, which I'm going to guess is at least shadowy -- there aren't too many enemies in the area. Don't get overconfident, though."

Looking at the map, she pulled a sharpie from a pocket in her vest, and circled a fairly large area -- several rooms near the top-left edge of the map.

"Head for this area. I think that's still in walkie-talkie range, but we'll have to find out. I've got the blotter open on my phone. If shit goes wrong, head for the entrance and I'll hopefully have a healer waiting here for you."

She sat in the chair, and folded the blanket over her legs.

"I should probably get a space heater at some point," she sighed.

All he had to do was make sure Kaerunuma didn't die.

Why is he even here if he can't defend himself?

Why was Daichi even here either? He recalled hearing an expression once. 'Fake it to make it.'

"You shouldn't worry Hanako-san! We'll be fine!"

He rolled up his copy of the map and stuck it in his pocket. The pit of terror was beginning to rise and expand. He was lucky he didn't start shaking then and there.

I'm the oldest here. I have to be okay. I have to keep my head on straight. I can't fuck up here. I can't.

He smiled at all of them reassuringly.

Fake it to make it indeed.

Manabu had been about to bring up that both he and Rio were scanners, in case of potential group break-up, but Rio managed to say it before him, so instead he just nodded. He turned toward Daichi and smiled at him. The guy looked nervous as hell.

"Don't get too overconfident, 'senpai'," Manabu said. "This is dangerous, after all."

He began walking toward the entrance. "Let's go already. Unlike some people, I don't have all day."

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
"Hey, I don't got all day either, I'm skippin' my between school-and-work R&R time for this," Kyo said blandly, stepping up beside Manabu once she'd claimed her own walkie-talkie. "We can plan on the way, I'm sure Rio'll tell us a good, clean Shadow-free way in, right--oh--Manabu, you're kinda s'posedta be in the middle o' the group, right? So nothin' gets t' you before it gets t' us."

And with that, Kyo slipped past Manabu and through the ruins entrance, pulling a curious-looking something from her pocket as she went. She turned around, walking several steps backward as she held the item up for everyone to see. And it was quite a thing, too, as she had said it was on the forum before this: it was no bigger than the palm of her hand, and it seemed to be... two rings of dark-gray gunmetal, with a narrow, triangular piece of the same metal. The needle didn't seem to be physically connected to the rings, and the rings themselves showed no sign of being fastened or welded together, separated by paper-narrow gaps between the two of them. At first, the tick-marks around the inside of the two rings might have given the impression of a clock, but there was only one "hand," which quivered like a compass-needled in the direction it had settled...

"I call this little gizmo here 'Death's Compass!'" she said. "Found it last time I was in here. Three guesses what it points to~"

"It points to the Reaper's relative location and distance from itself?" Her inflection of the question was of the sort that would suck all the fun out of a guessing game. She couldn't help it. She was very tense, and nothing seemed to help.

"Well, let's just be as careful as we can, given the circumstances. Rio? We're in your hands." The map and walkie-talkie were tucked away where they could have been safely accessed on her person while needed, but her hands were kept free.

"I'll go on ahead first then?"

"Straight shot from the entrance. Take a right at the third intersection," Rio called after them. Then she clicked on the walkie-talkie: "and double-time, there are some maya and those asshole unicorn things around, if you move quickly you don't need to worry about them."

She opened up her mapping program, and twitched the cursor to follow their expected path. She clicked on the radio again after a moment.

"Three or four of those bug-head shadows in the area. Two Gregarious Goers and a pair of Gossipy Goers. Their path might intersect yours, but if you don't stop, you should reach the stairs, no problem."

"Well Kaerunuma-san. We've got three Ascended users with us today! I'd say that earns us a little confidence!"

Just had to...try and keep the others morale up. That and make sure the kid didn't die. Yep, seemed simple enough.

"Hanako-san? Maybe I should stick closer to Kaerunuma-san, so I can take on anything that gets past you and Sensei."

Right, lead with their best feet forward right?

"I mean if Sensei takes point, maybe you should take the back? Kaerunuma-san and I could stay near the middle?"

Strategically, it made the most sense. Even if Daichi didn't like it.
