Rio sat back and began to chew the fingers on her left hand.

---

The Qlippoth turned its head toward Kaede as she came forward. Just like that, two of the targets it had just hit were almost back up to full power. Clearly this couldn't stand: however, it sensed that Maragion wouldn't be the most effective course of action.

The slash that defined its mouth widened again, becoming a gaping hole into some other place of infinite dimension, the same blue-black-velvet color as the darkest night sky. An incredibly loud noise emerged, shaking the walls and causing the hole that the Qlippoth had caused in the side of the hallway to collapse.

[Used Reversing Cry again -- to reiterate: this is a second-tier force damage, and any character who hasn't reached their last ascension has their persona replaced by their shadow, but they still have access to all their powers.]

Did he enjoy the idea of leaving Hanako and Kyo here? Not in the least. Did he enjoy the idea of going closer to that thing? Not on your life. Was he happy that he could help? He was overjoyed he could help.

"Right uh...Ryouta-san? Do you mind taking the lead here? I'm all out of magic."

He assumed that the boy was a third tier. So it was better that he lead the charge so to speak. Not to mention there was the rather glaring issue of Daichi being on empty. Still, at least he could distract the Qlippoth right?

"Oh don't worry Hanako-san. Just who the hell do you think my teacher is anyway?"

Speaking of, he was going to have to have a talk with Kyo about those free lessons she owed him. Then, the Reversing Cry hit him. Causing the boy to grunt and take a knee. Fuck, they hadn't even started to get close to it and they were already being attacked. He shook his head and used the ground to steady himself.

"I'm fine, let's get to it. Come on, no time to waste."

I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Manabu put his arm around Kyo's shoulder to help support himself, and he couldn't help but be struck by how tall she was. Haha, he really was a squat little toad, wasn't he? He watched her turn the Death's Compass with some interest, but ultimately kept his eyes on his feet as he walked. He continued to mutter to himself as they continued on, not holding any interest in Kyo and Hanako's conversation.

"It's name though... Shadows have names for a reason, but Qlippoth... a realm of evil, shells holding sparks of holiness... They're representations of sin, impurity... but what sin? Whose sin?" He put a hand to his head. "...Are they even real Shadows? Or are they false idols? Whose idols?"

He groaned. "Just... keep walking, Kyo."

Kaede barely had any time to turn back toward the Qlippoth before the Reversing Cry hit. She was knocked backward by the damage and her ears started to ring.

"Fuck!" she yelled, though she couldn't actually hear her own voice. That was a hell of an attack, but it looked like she was okay.

don't stare at it too long

"Oh... shit." Ryouta didn't swear often, but things didn't exactly seem to be going to swimmingly. If he recalled correctly, this fire wasn't effective against this thing, which left his most effective attack out of the question. Manabu had said something about... fusion spells, but Ryouta was pretty certain he had never done one of those his whole stint as a persona user.

He wasn't sure about the others though. Some of them he didn't quite recognize, but maybe they were capable of that? If he could distract the quiffly thing maybe they could strike back.

He didn't waste much time and dove in, persona appearing behind him as he cast a hamaon on the thingy.

-insert something witty here-

Both Kakeru and Isoroku were knocked back before Kakeru could even launch his Mind Charged attack towards the Qlippoth. Isoroku groaned in pain as she tried to get back on her feet as Kakeru took a look on himself.

The damages caused by the Reversing Cry weren't too bad, but Kakeru had a lingering feeling that something felt off about himself after being hit by that attack. She looked at Isoroku and then at Kaede to see whether they were alright or not. Isoroku managed to get back on her feet.

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Kyo moved, supporting Manabu as best she could. Hanako was with them, and magic or not, that girl was a formidable fighter, so they probably didn't have to worry about any Shadows getting in close. To Manabu she said, "Yeah, let's save the speculatin' for when we get outta here." Pause. "Y'said there was somethin' ya felt from below. Even without your Persona? Prolly means one o' them big boss Shadows. Miss Yellow and them. Whatever this thing is, it's prolly important. Let's just hope your Fusion Spell idea's the way t' go, 'cause if it is, heheheh..."

The girl pushed ahead a little harder. Manabu was surprisingly a bit shorter than her... a boy, shorter than her--that was saying something. He'd probably caught some teasing for that at some point, she couldn't help thinking.

"...I might as well... say it," Kyo grunted. "I put a lot o' time and energy inta gettin' Isoroku through her dark times. Can't say it was all me--she did it on her own in the end, I guess I just sorta--believed she had it in her, gave her a push every here n' there where I could. And I did help get her back with her boyfriend in the end. Happy endin' like I promised I'd help her find... and if this works, it's about t' pay off in a way I never expected it ta, cynical as that sounds..."

Around a corner, and then up a passage almost parallel to the one in which the others were fighting. Kyo kept the Compass out, continued trying to determine the Reaper's direction and elevation. Seemed to be below them still, but more in the sense of--quite a ways away on the second or third floor, maybe? But there was more than one way up, that wasn't a reason to get complacent yet...

The green-haired girl snickered humorlessly. "...Keheheh, t' think all that drama might actually end up--" (Another grunt--her injuries weren't completely devoid of pain even after the Diarahan.) "--contributin' somethin' after all. Who woulda thought..."

"I don't think this is the time or the place to wax philosophical about that thing."

It didn't seem like it was going to lead to anything worthwhile in Hanako's assessment. At least not anything that couldn't wait until they were safely out first. She went on ahead, her butterfly knife out. She might not have had access to Medusa and her abilities, but in the event that Rio was unable to warn them of trouble thanks to the Qlippoth's presence, she had no intention of letting some random Shadow get the best of her.

It irritated her that Daichi was wandering into danger, even if it was just to relay a message. Once the suggestion he go was offered, there was no going back. To argue it would have just wasted precious time and they were running out of that. If something did happen to him though, Hanako wasn't going to forget who offered the suggestion in the first place. Not by a long shot.

She kept her eyes and ears open for possible unexpected dangers coming at them from any direction. It wasn't hard for her to notice: The walls rattled in one direction and she could vaguely hear the same sickening cry as before, but this time it was just sound, no damage or other dangers. She guessed that was the direction that thing was being engaged in.

"If it works, that's all I really care about at the moment."
It was definitely something to think about if all those bonds people made mattered in an dramatically tangible way but it was more important to worry about the problem that was in front of them first. The rest could have been talked about at another time.

Sensing that Daichi -- who had a radio -- was nearing the others, Rio shouted into her walkie-talkie: "Kagami, Mayoi: Fusion spell that bitch and get the fuck out!"

This being an open channel, everyone who had taken a radio down in with them would be able to hear.

---

The hamaon struck the Qlippoth and produced a dazzling rainbow display of scintillating light. The attack left a patch on its left shoulder tarnished and yellowed. It turned its head all the way around, decided that the boy wasn't the most pressing concern and then reversed its head all the way again, focusing on Kakeru.

It knew that Kakeru was resistant to fire, and instead opted to use a physical skill. It raised one fist, reared back, and struck at the swordsman, a cloud of ballistic needles appearing from the thin air around its right hand and zipping towards him.

Seeing as how there was really nothing else he could do in this situation. Because he was still unascended and he was completely drained of all magic. Daichi decided that at most all he could do was shout what Rio had just said once again. In case the two had not heard her.

"Kagami! Mayoi! Fusion spell now!"

It was all he could do now. As soon as he made sure that the two had pulled it off? He'd grab for Ryouta and start running. Especially if the Qlippoth was still alive afterward. No alive didn't seem like the right word, if the Qlippoth were still existing afterward.

"It's the only damn thing I've been good for today, so you might as well let me do it!" Manabu snapped. A moment later, his expression fell and he looked back toward the ground. "...Sorry," he said half-heartedly, and continued walking.

He couldn't stop himself from thinking about those things. Shadow names were significant. If it was called that, there had to be a reason for it. Qlippoth was a very specific word with a very specific origin and meaning, and it was being applied to a Shadow. There had to be a reason for it. Even more worrying, there could be more.

It kept him from thinking about the other things, too, like the fact that his heart was still hammering in his chest and the fact that Hanako could easily just kill him right then and there. It wasn't like he had a Persona to stop her with anymore.

As if to fuel Manabu's nagging paranoia, Kyo chose that very moment to start talking about how she'd helped Isoroku and Kakeru get back together. He didn't say anything through the whole story, keeping his mouth shut with a decidedly awkward look on his face. Finally, he said, "...Charinko-san, maybe there's some things you should keep to yourself."

Kaede was definitely starting to feel a bit tired. The constant attacks and healing spells were wearing her down, and they still hadn't managed to kill this thing. At this rate the rescue team was going to need rescuing themselves. Just as she had that thought, a burst of light exploded against the Shadow's shoulder. She followed the spell's path to see--

"Ryouta?!" Kaede yelled. Well damn! The idiot was good for something after all! Oh, and there was Daichi. He yelled something about fusion spells, and Rio yelled something about fusion spells through the walkie, so Kaede turned toward Kakeru and Isoroku.

"You heard them! Light that fucker up!"
