Conan blinked. Another Taiyoutono student. That butterfly just loved grabbing them, didn't it.

"I think the exit is another floor up," he said. "Come on. I'll lead the way."

He screwed his mask back in place, and picked up his boom box. Shadows tended to hunt for groups, anyway. They were attracted by the greater degree of noise, he figured. It wasn't like he was attempting to get the children out: they could manage on their own, or else they would learn their lesson.

"Aww yeah...thanks for completely...ignoring me you two."

He continued his shaky walking toward the stairs.

"Hey...Bunny Girl. You got a name or-"

He grunted as a leg decided it was time to stop supporting him, so he leaned heavily on the nearest wall. He pounded a fist against it.

No fucking way. No way am I going to fall over.

He continued to walk forward. Using the wall as support.

"Or what? Gonna need a name if i'm going to walk you all the way home. Otherwise the conversation's going to be a bit one sided."

Damnit.

"Oh, sorry…I"m just a bit distracted by, well everything." Being nearly killed by monsters several times in one night in a place she had no actual recollection of visiting would have done that to her. Still that was a poor excuse for rudeness, absolutely poor, the worse.

She laughed at the bunny comment. It wasn't funny according to how her own sense of humor was calibrated, but it seemed appropriate, so that was just what she did. "Oh, Sorry, my name's Mia. Mia Sato. Please lead the way. Um…I'm afraid I don't know your name either."

Her previous assumption that she wound up on the ground floor of someplace was way off. Even without the immediate danger, she was unlikely to find her own way out on her own. She pictured it vividly in her minds eye: She'd have stumbled blindly unknowingly going deeper and deeper into danger until she stumbled into something like she just did. She doubted her luck would have held out as well that time.

He stumbled, she paused. "Oh! Sorry! I guess that wasn't enough, I'll try again. And do you need some help too, Mister Wells?" She guessed her situation happened a lot? At least twice previously that she knew of, at least likely many more times…

Conan grimaced at the boy's reaction -- wounded pride? Really? -- and didn't dignify it with a response. He wasn't about to take "the next agi" because he had only implicitly agreed to help them find the exit. He wasn't about to volunteer to be set on fire.

"[I'm fine,]" Conan said in English. He guessed she was American, based on the accent and the use of the "mister" title. It was awkward, communicating in his native tongue after so many months, but it was still quicker than Japanese. "[Focus on him for now.]"

Conan headed for the stairs, eyes peeled for anything that might come out of the darkness.

"Jiro Takenaka. Now let's keep going."

He was obviously struggling to walk forward, each step was emphasized with a grunt.

"Casting tons of Dias isn't going to do anything. Except for leave the burns all angry and red looking."

Kind of sucked how that worked out. Especially when he'd been set on fire every fucking time he's been down here.

"And don't apologize. I'm just cranky cause I got set on fire again. Gonna make sure Imoto-san is down here with me next time, use him as a shield."

The last part was more so him muttering to himself.

"So Mia-san. You new to this wonderful hellhole of a city?"

Step, grunt. Step, grunt. Still using the wall for support.

"Now...last I remember. Getting to the stairs didn't take this long."

He forced a small laugh.

"Then again...being set on fire and getting hit with whatever the fuck that other thing was. May just effect my speed hmm?"

"I understand." She responded in fluent English. If Conan cared to guess, her dialect pinned down her region of origin as somewhere in the US West Coast. With his instructions, her attention was mainly held by Jiro.

"Ah, I see." She switched back senselessly to Japanese. She was obviously far behind on what she needed to know, so she didn't miss a detail. Jiro mentioned 'Imoto' and she filed the name away to look up later. As she followed behind him, something on the ground caught her eye. "Yeah, I'm new here, moved to town not more than a couple of days ago."

When she got a little closer, she knelt down and picked it up: It was somebody's wallet. A picture of people she'd never met before, but whom looked very happy together was in a pocket with a hole for displaying just that. Besides it, there was some identification… Ryoichi Shimizu, huh?

Given where she found it. It was probably a good idea to make sure Shimizu's still on the right side of the banks of the Sanzo. After that? She'd return it to him. As a first step for that was getting the hell out of there anyways it was on her way anyways. "Yeah, that looked kind of dangerous. My first thought was to get away but you're pretty tough to be able to withstand it." The screaming of course would have been politely ignored. That's how one avoided making waves, after all. She doubted she'd react much better being lit on fire either.

Conan slung the boombox up over his broad shoulders, resting his hands on the partially-melted plastic case, allowing his head to hang forward. His right hand rested near the power button, which meant that he could switch it on at a moment's notice. Not that such a thing would really count as getting ready for combat, but the librarian really preferred to have an appropriate sound track for fighting Shadows, and those winged stereos weren't as common as one might hope.

They reached the stairs that Jiro had jumped down to follow Conan, and he paused to look back at the two. He thought he might have heard something behind them, but he didn't see anything at the moment. The librarian snorted, dismissing his concerns as if they had been raised by someone else.

"If you're going to keep moaning, I could just carry you," Conan rumbled at Jiro. "We'd get out of here faster."

"Come on Librarian-san. Just humor me a little huh? I'm all weak to fire and burnt over here. Gotta say, appreciate the tunes though. Good boombox, know where I can get one?"

Oh god now it was stairs. Well, he wasn't going to ask to lean on any of their shoulders. That was for damn sure. Step, step, step.

"Say...Mia-san. Just out of curiosity, gonna need to know your address. What with walking you home and all. Don't worry, i'm not some-"

He actually had to fucking take a knee. He had to take a knee. Goddamnit, he wasn't going to look weak and frail. Especially not in front of them. He stood, or at least as much as he could manage.

"I'm not some perv y'know?"

Just had to keep the conversation going smoothly. Act like he was just fine.

"Oh, and this is the thing? You're probably weak to something and strong to something. In my case, I can't be shot, stabbed, or anything like that. Guessing it's the same for you Librarian-san. The trade off? I'm weak to fire. So...after getting set on fire 6 or 7 times. You get used to it eventually Mia-san."

Jiro seemed like he was waning a bit, but trying to remain tough. Was it just not wanting to look weak in front of Mia because she was a girl? Or was he the sort that just didn't like appearing weak in front of others period? She was leaning towards the other way, else she'd probably have had to endure at least one lame come-on or something by that point.

"Yeah, something like that…" She was a bit reluctant to list off everything Lif was instructing her to watch out for, and the things she excelled at resisting. Seemed kind of unbalanced really. "Don't worry, I don't do well against fire either." Listing them all off seemed daunting, one or two details for the sake of making things go better as they left was fine, though.

She had to giggle a little at the 'perv' comment. It wasn't that she didn't believe him, but it echoed her own thoughts just a few moments ago. "Oh, I'd really appreciate that. I don't even know where This is. I only moved here what? Last week? Not even that long ago…" With the newly found wallet in one hand, she offered her shoulder. They really did need to be moving if they didn't want to encounter more Shadows before she was safely on her way home. "Hey, I wouldn't feel right about just taking all your help without doing something in return. Would it be okay if I at least helped you out of here, Takenaka-san?"

Just point her the way out and she was more than ready to go. At least that way Jiro would have been able to save a little face and their pace wouldn't be staggered.

"Find the right thrift store, and you can pick one up. From back before designed obsolescence," Conan said. "Stupidest thing tech companies ever did."

He paused at the top of the stairs and turned back, looking at the boy and girl as they talked. Was this what flirting looked like in Japan? God, it had been so long since he'd been a teenager that he didn't even know how they behaved. All he knew was that the average adolescent was a sort of feral human, just this side of behaving constantly like a suicidal drunk.

He cleared his throat, and spoke.

"Well, let's just all avoid fire, then," Conan said. "Though chances are we're going to find something that will set us all alight before we leave and --"

It was just then that he noticed something chewing on his leg. He looked down, and was eye-to-eye with an armor-wearing bear attempting to maul his left calve. He looked at it for a long moment, noticing that the shadow seemed to be oblivious to the fact that it wasn't achieving anything.

"We have company," he said, his voice completely calm.
