"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
The Wind blast buffeted the Hablerie backward, and Shane followed this up by summoning his Persona: the spectral, inhuman half-body of Yamato appeared in a blaze of blue light behind him and with a flick of his right hand (which the Persona mimicked, in perfect time with Shane himself), sent a blue sword of Force magic spinning through the air to strike the Shadow as well.

The two spells succeeded in blasting the Switching Hablerie out of the air, where it lay twitching, oozing, near-death. Scarlett stared at Shane's Persona with incredulous eyes, ignoring the dying Shadow completely.

"Seriously," she said flatly. "Your Persona is fucking... Nero from Devil May Cry 4. Oh, that is just so fitting. A Dante wannabe for a Dante wannabe. That's almost as good as--"

As Shane rolled his eyes at the red-eyed girl's scorn, the Hablerie sprang up from the ground, swung around--and cast Garula, a second-tier wind spell, but not at Maki or Shane. Rather, it cast it at the red-eyed Shadow-girl, who spun toward it in alarm and caught the swirling vortex of wind full in the front. A snarl of pain was all it managed to produce before being flung into the wall, hard, impacting with a choking grunt and an audible cracking sound. It then slid to the floor and landed in a heap, clutching at its left wrist and growling. Shane watched this impassively, his only reaction raised eyebrows.

"Huh," he said mildly, reaching up to lower his sunglasses, the better to clearly see this spectacle. "That felt almost like the punch-line to a really long and tedious joke."

She was about to make a glib comment of her own concerning Nevan, a character from that same series of video games. But before she could, the apparently un-charmed Switching Hablerie was none too pleased about it's former state.

"Watch out!" She called out a warning and responded with another Garu in hopes of finishing it off before it inflicts any more retaliatory attacks in it's death throes. She'd give a second, given the relative strength of the Shadow compared to her own, it was only prudent to be sure it was dealt with.

Afterwards, a moment to think. The thought of Scarlett was obvious, and this was just what she would decide to make of her: Well she was hardly a friend, but she was no enemy either. With that prospect Maki approached the red-eyed Shadow and knelt over her, offering her a hand up.

"Are you hurt seriously? I'm afraid I'm no healer, you might be forced to find a Sleeping Manta, or something."

One caught more flies with honey than vinegar, after all…

Shane made no move to assist in finishing the monster off, he merely let his Persona fade away and pulled off his sunglasses with one casual flick of his wrist, folding them up and slipping them into his jacket pocket. The Garu spell turned out to be enough, though--it didn't just blast the monster back this time, it tore into its side, producing a slimy black gouge. Like a bag of vegetables it flopped to the floor, and then it began to melt.

"Shit," mumbled the red-eyed Shadow-girl, hunched by the wall. "Shit, shit, shit..."

She looked up when Maki approached, first guarded... then, relaxing slightly when no hostile moves came. Her eyes narrowed slightly in puzzlement. "Heh, for a moment, I thought you'd take advantage and try to kill me," she said. "Wouldn't advise that, though. I am pretty strong, something as small as a broken wrist's just a bit of a handicap, that's all. You know, because I'd be down a hand. That was a pun, y'geddit? Ha!"

"Har har..." Shane said uncaringly, turning around. "If you're going to make nice with the dirty little Shadow-vixen, be my guest, officer. But we should probably get out of here before the Reaper shows up, again. And because of this stupid delay, I didn't even get a chance to finish my patrol. Tch."

"Oh, don't pretend like you care!" Scarlett snapped irritably, gingerly getting to her feet and holding her broken arm close to her stomach, keeping it still. "You said it yourself, didn't you?"

The Shadow-girl's eyes scrunched up with exaggerate anger, and she deepened her voice as if to imitate a nineties dudebro:

"Everyone plays at whatever they play at for their own sakes. Whether it's for money or power or just to feel good about who they are, and if you're telling me you're different, I'm going to point, and laugh, and call you a liar!" Abruptly, Scarlett ended the impression, her eyes going cold. "Weren't those your exact words, dork? Well, why don't you try to be something a little more impressive than 'everyone,' eh? Or do you just not have the stones?"

Shane gritted his teeth, and then grinned. He remembered saying that, alright. He also remembered who the witnesses had been. A few conscious delinquents, Charles Oliveira, Nana Samurakami, and that Archangel girl, who he was more than ninety percent certain he knew the identity of. What Scarlett said was the real self-righteous bullshit though--trying to be better than the entire fucking human race?

What kind of egotist did she take him for?

"Just being diplomatic." She said. It was true. They got out of their predicament with words and good faith. She saw no reason to change that just because the situation had changed.

"…be that as it may,"
That incident was definitely something to ask Spencer about. "People are capable of change, are they not?" But it was true, there was nothing more to be said or done there, and their time was running out.

"I think we should leave for the time being. Should we meet in this area again tomorrow, Miss Scarlett?" There was no reason not to. She would turn to leave as soon as it was confirmed or not.

Afterwards, she had much to plan. Hopefully this somewhat cooperative Shadow would have proven useful to shedding some light onto the mystery of the ruins in some way. At the least, she suspected she could have solved one problem if she could have encouraged her to stop harassing Kyo Charinko if nothing else.

She planned to wait until they were at the exit, and once past that threshold, she had a question to ask Shane: "One of the people who was told that monologue was Kyo Charinko, was it not?"

"People don't change," Shane said blandly, setting off down the hall and drawing his bastard sword, eyes peeled for further Shadows that might bar the path between them and the exit. "They just put everything they already had into a different outlet. What else is there to do? It's not like they switch their brain out for someone else's."

Scarlett just leaned back against the wall and grimaced, nodding her head in response to Maki's plan.

"Sure, sure..." she said. "Have fun, and don't worry about anything that might attack you! For you guys, help is just text away. Me, I'm alone. Always alone, forever alone, boo hoo..."

The red-eyed Shadow-girl mimed the motion of wiping a tear out of its eye, and then leaned its head back against the wall, letting the two Persona-users walk away without drama or ceremony. Two more Persona-users who knew about her, two more acquaintances of her fake self out there.

It wouldn't be long now. Wouldn't be long. Then she could finally...

...finally...

"Greenhair Senior?" Shane asked as he hopped over the top step of the exit stairway, out into the open. It was dark, and calm--night had fallen some time ago, although that was happening sooner now, with the approach of winter. "Yeah, she was there when I said that. Nana Samurakami's pet vigilante, or something. Never mind all the organized crime, they're all 'under her protection.' Psh. Whatever..."

The blue-haired boy shrugged, stuffing his hands in his pockets and turning to face Maki, a sour look on his face.

"There's her, running around in a stupid costume like some kind of Tokusatsu hero, apprenticed to that Serpentina woman, and she has the nerve to get on other people's cases for being vigilante," he said. Shane's voice was even, but a slight rise in volume gave away that he might not have been as calm about the matter as he tried to let on. "Like she's some kind of 'better' vigilante or something. And then during her off time she pals around with murderers and shit, and then she turns around and acts like she has any right to judge anyone. It makes me sick, you know that?"

He turned around, brushed back the tail of his coat, and sighed. "If there's nothing else," he said, "I'm going to go for a walk, wait an hour, the Reaper should have drifted back off to wherever it is when he's not trying to kill someone by then. I'll pick up my patrol again then. It's not like I've got anything better to do with my nights, since I can't even hang with my g--...with Natsumi or anything."

"I see."

It made her suspect that this the one in the same troll that had been harassing Kyo on Bedlam, and a sort of doppelganger spawned from the young woman.

"Well, I can't say I approve of any vigilante behavior, for any reason. For that matter the same can be said of Samurakami's operation." She said, rather grimly. "However, I think that's not the most important thing here. I suspect our new associate with red eyes is a doppelganger of Kyo Charinko. That said, if she proves to be no danger to Charinko or anyone else, I think it might be worth while to maintain contact with her."

She nodded. "Be careful and I would advise you to give her a wide berth if possible. Keep an eye on Bedlam later, you can expect to be brought in on a discussion on the events that occurred here."

With that said, she planned to drive home, but not before she felt the need to inform at least some interested parties at this with her phone. Afterwards, she planned to return home and continue that discussion another time.

"Oh, I don't know, maybe she's a doppelganger of random delinquent nobody number eight hundred and fifty-six," Shane snapped sarcastically, throwing his hands up in the air and then running them over his hair. "Keep an eye on Bedlam and stay away from the creepy girl with the glowy red eyes. Sure, got it. Jeez. But if people can spawn random red-eyed, benevolent clones of themselves down here, Yamada, answer me this: why hasn't it happened before? What makes you think this one isn't a danger? Shit, for all you know she could have killed whoever it was she took those clothes from. Why would she need clothes? Whatever made her couldn't be bothered to give her a shirt and pants, or something? ...Fuck..."

Shane didn't wait for an answer to any of his complaints, simply took off walking, into the woods, around the mountains. At some point later in the night he would go into the ruins again, but probably not by this entrance. Whatever Yamada did was her business. It wasn't up to him what the bighead authority types decided to do about the ruins and whatever new monsters they spit out, after all, he was just there to beat stuff up.

If this turned sour it was on their heads, not his. He didn't have to feel guilty about it. Not even a little bit, not--one--bit.

Tch...
