"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
"I meant that first one like, as in the opposite of 'wrong!'" Kyo yelled, rolling forward into a crouch-run when the first gunshot sounded. A fluorescent light above was blown out, but then they were given a couple seconds of breathing time--all the better to breath while sprinting--and Kyo held up her compass, watching the needle as it followed the Reaper's progress. A laughing shout: "This thing is gonna be so handy! Left here!" Around the corner, and then it was a short, straight shot to the exit... Kyo watched the needle, eyes flitting up and down between the exit passage ahead and the compass, watched and waited for it to point directly backward, because that was when they had to worry about being vaporized there were some open doorways in this hallway though, so if they absolutely had to they could duck inside... but then they'd be cornered... Urgh, you know what? The day the news of this thing's death hits is the day Hiro-kun won't be able to walk straight for six months. TOTALLY. |

Kakeru could feel the bullets flying over his head as he crouched, avoiding the attack from the Reaper. Then he continued running, following after the two. He also had to be extra careful while running down the hallway due to the collapsing ceiling. He always hoped that there had to be some ways to deal with this big guy. But for now, they could only do the running whenever they stumbled upon this thing. "Kyo, you sure this is a right direction?" he asked the green-haired girl as he followed her. |

Naoya had already begun to turn right, but skidded to a stop and reversed, losing the distance he had on Kakeru and Kyo. He stopped for a moment to let them pass, and slammed his left hand -- charged with a mighty swing -- into the wall, cleaving a support strut. The roof began to cave in between them and the Reaper and the rubble immediately began to melt under the onslaught of a fifth-tier fire attack. "Go! Faster, f--!" he said, and jerked back when a jet of fire engulfed him. His clothes smoldered and melted, but he was -- of course -- unharmed. He quickly took off after Kyo and Kakeru, now at the back of the group. |

Kyo looked back when she heard the roof cave in behind her, so naturally she looked back in time to see Naoya engulfed in flames. She couldn't help screaming his name, for a moment forgetting his immunity and only remembering fear of fire. But then he was running after them, and she gulped, clutching the compass tighter. There was the entrance right in front of them. Kyo saw it, and her face twisted into a victorious, snarling smirk. Her running steps changed from plasticky patters to rocky clacks and thumps--she had reached the slight downward stone incline where ruins and cavern entrance converged. She skidded to a stop--right inside the entryway, and turned around, making a wide, beckoning sweep of her hand as the other sprinted nearer. "Go, go, go!" |

Seeing the entrance right in front of them, Kakeru ran towards it because they would be safe once they stepped out of it. And he took a large leap to reach the outside before he skidded to a halt as he finally reached the outside of the ruins. Panting slightly, Kakeru looked back at the ruins behind him to see their pursuer. It wouldn't be able to chase them any longer now that they were already outside its domain. |

Naoya barreled through the exit, headed right up the stairs, and skidded to a stop on the grass before -- as was his custom -- flopping onto his back. To this he added a "thumbs down" gesture, raising his arm up and pointing his thumb directly at the ground in a way the Reaper could see. The shadow most likely couldn't interpret it, but it made him feel better. For its part, the Reaper slammed into the exit, sending a cloud of dust up through the entrance behind Kyo. It battered at the boundary for a moment with the butts of its revolvers, then retreated back from the exit, presumably to lurk nearby for a moment. |

Kyo made a hand gesture at the Reaper as she cleared the exit, too. It was considerably ruder than a thumbs-down. Then the dust cloud happened, and she found herself coughing and spluttering and rubbing at her eyes as she slowed to a stop. "Gah! Shit! Jeez..." she swore as the coughs died down, and she stopped several paces away from Naoya and Kakeru, bent down, hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. "Well," she said, holding up the compass. "Found a cool trinket, and we got away from the Reaper without some piece of our bodies bein' hideously mangled. I'd say that makes today a good day, wouldn't you?" Kyo tossed the compass into the air and caught it with a victorious grin, then held it up to look at it again. "Hrm..." she murmured. "So, either o' you up for a bite t' eat on the way back? 'Cause I know I am." |

"The Reaper is somehow a sore loser," Kakeru deadpanned as he observed the dust cloud that was produced by the invulnerable Shadow. Well, at least they were safe for now, unless the Reaper found a way to get out of the ruins and fuck them all the way to the moon. "That sounds good," Kakeru said after hearing Kyo's suggestion. "Yeah, count me in." |

Naoya looked up at the sky for a bit. He blinked twice, thinking. Somehow, he was still alive. "I...I c'n eat," he remembered what the mist-like shadow had done, the form it had taken, "but, uh...I gotta get home 'n' make dinner. So...uh...yeah." |

"Oh," Kyo said dully, blinking a bit as her grin faded. "Well, uh--right, it might spoil your appetite on top o' wastin' time, mightn't it." The green-haired girl tapped her finger thoughtfully on the inner ring of the gunmetal compass, and then slipped it into her pants pocket, leaving her hand in there with it. She could feel the needle inside turning about and pointing... no, it was just turning. She glanced back toward the ruins entrance, and saw that the Reaper wasn't there anymore. It had drifted off, back to wandering or to wherever it went when it wasn't chasing down Persona-users. Kyo slipped the compass out again and laid it out flat in her hand, watching the needle stabilize, pointing directly at the entrance they'd just escaped through. "I'd offer t' compromise and maybe see if you n' your uncle'd be up for a group dinner, even help cook, but... eh..." she muttered. "I don't think I'm ready t' talk t' Shin again just yet. It's complicated. Maybe you n' me can have lunch another time, if ya don't wanna come with us this time." Kyo, staring at the compass, shifted it several inches to the left... then, back to the right, several inches past its original position. The needle remained pointed fixedly at the entry, even though it was unlikely that the Reaper's position wasn't wavering at all from that direction. Huh... "And uh, we'll talk about other stuff later," Kyo said with a shrug, slipping the compass into her pocket again, and tapping a finger on the side of it through the fabric of her jeans. "For now I'm just glad t' be alive and well. It ain't every day a run from the Reaper ends without a need t' call in a healer request through the Blotter, y'know? No sense ruinin' the mood." |
