In her hospital bed. Hanako stirred. It didn't mean anything, not on it's own. In the weeks since she'd been placed there, she'd done that dozens, perhaps even hundreds of times. Much to the relief (and probably thanks to more than one or two successfully covertly used healing spells,) her body had recovered quite nicely from the attack.

Her mind however? Still lay dormant, at least as far as anyone was able to tell.

Inside her own mind, Hanako was alone. No, not alone, it was her and her Shadow. She considered that worse than being alone. Since who knows how long, she'd lingered at the gaping void just beyond the hospital room door. She'd confirmed it was no illusion. The first time she tried, she nearly fell.

Her Shadow was no help at all. She had to crawl up on her own.

"Wow, you're really sick of it all? Gonna jump?"

She stared back at her, glaring right into the big yellow eyes. She was taunting her, daring her.
She turned back out into the nothingness. It was more interesting than anything in the room.

That's when she saw it. It was just a sliver, but she was sure she saw it, light! She was so excited, she momentarily forgot to tune out the taunts of her Shadow.

"…I wouldn't blame you for just ending it all, y'know? I'm getting pretty sick of this place too. I mean what did you really have to live for before…?"

She took several steps back, as much of a running start as the room allowed, and she jumped.

"HAHAH! WOW! REALLY?!"

Sailing, sailing, though the air, though the darkness. Until she hits something, uneven, hard. rock?

She dug in with her nails she tried to slow her fall and find footholds and handholds. Success! She climbed her way up, her eyes only focused on climbing up towards that sliver of light. But the whole while, she knew she was there, her Shadow made her presence known the stares felt like they were going to burn a hole in the back of her head, and she just clicked her tongue as she watched her climb.

But something was there Something substantial. And wherever it lead, anywhere was better than the limbo she was trapped in that long time. That's what propelled her up, inch by inch.

Something was wrong! She felt something cold and steely grab her leg, It dragged her down, back to what was surely oblivion!

"Oh, you're in trouble now, aren't you?"

Ignore it, pay attention to what's ahead, what's up! She redoubled her efforts, desperately clawing her way up, kicking and flailing her leg until she was free. She glanced down and wished she didn't, out of the darkness, there was a long arm, then two, then five, then dozens. All reaching for her, all to drag her down to her demise.

No! No! Ignore them! Keep your eyes up! Climb, dammit! Climb!

Somehow, she made it, despite close calls to snatch her back down, there was barely a ledge enough for her to stand, and a door. plain wood, silver knob.

She finally looked over her shoulder. Just as her Shadow closed the door to the hospital room. when it was just a crack, only the eyes were seen.

"Wow…good job!" Her voice was a mockery of Hanako's own, and thick with sarcasm. "Guess this is where we part for a bit. But don't worry! I'm sure a basket case like you will be seeing a lot more of me soon. So until then, laters Hana-chan!"

Forget it, forget it. Just open the door, and walk though it…

The thrashing happened on occasion, but it never got so animate as Hanako had been. And then? She gasped! An inarticulate single word that was far more activity than she'd had in weeks.

"Wh-whe…"

And where was Hanako's best friend? Right by her bedside, like every day, as much as visiting hours allowed.

Luckily, with a lot of vigilance and persistence from both the doctors and healers, Hanako was making quite a nice recovery. Machi couldn't help but force herself to think Hanako would wake up at some point. Magic could heal most things, right? She'd be out of that coma eventually...

I can't even begin to describe how irrational you're being.

That particular day, Machi was distracted copying the rest of the school work to a spare notebook, so Hanako could utilize it to catch up in all the classes she was missing. Her pencil was practically on auto-pilot, as her mind was too busy with worry for her to actually pay proper attention to what she was doing.

Such writing abruptly came to a halt once she heard the small stir. Being quite on edge, even the smallest of things sent Machi's mind into complete overdrive. Though, it seemed to be a temporary thing... She frowned slightly.

But then, Hanako started to thrash around, quite a bit.

Machi let go of the 'homework', getting up and hitting the nurse call button. There was something definitely off, and--

"Wh-whe…"

"...Hana-chan...?"

Machi's eyes widened immensely, and her heart skipped a beat. Out of pure reflex, she reached for one of the girl's hands with both of her own - somehow, in her severely impaired mind, she made out the thought Hanako was fighting. And so she would be there for her.

"Come on, you can do it...!" A pale, shaky Machi tried to cheer the comatose Hanako up, rather desperately, lightly squeezing the grabbed hand.

It was completely irrational... But it was literally all she could do in her uselessness.

It was high time that Daichi visited his friend. He had only recently been able to work up the resolve to go and actually walk to the hospital. So, he had got in the elevator and left on the appropriate floor. He made his way to Hanakos room, and was about to open the door when he heard the familiar voice of Machi Kijimuta.

"...Hana-chan...?"

Daichi quickly opened the door, only to see Hanako thrashing in her bed and Kijimuta-san holding her hand.

"Wha...Is she waking up?!"

Excitement and worry were evident in his voice, and he swiftly made his way to the side of the bed opposite of Kijimuta-san.

"Come on Hanako-chan! Come on! All you've gotta do is open your eyes! You're gonna do it!"

He was half pleading, half exhilirated. He didn't matter, Kijimuta-san didn't matter, the only thing that mattered was Hanako. If she woke up, then everything would be okay. And if she asked him to leave, he would do so with a smile on his face and a spring in his step.

As usual Momoko was rushing to Hanako's room. Machi tended to spend all her time there, mostly alone with hanako. She had to be there for her. Plus, Hanako was her friend as well...

Clutching the lunch she brought, in case machi hadn't been eating, the girl stepped near the door, only to hear all HELLUVA lot of commotion from the inside.

Momoko quickly threw open the door and stepped inside, only to see both Machi and Daichi cheering a thrashing Hanako on. "W-wha?" Wait...was she waking up or...

""H-hanako-chan?" After a small pause the girl rushed over next to machi. Like the others, she cheered Hanako on. Hoping them being there would help her.

From her perspective, nothing was comprehensible. Every sound from the voices to monitoring equipment had become an incomprehensible din to her ears. As her eyelids slowly opened for the first time in weeks, even the meager lightning in a room that housed a patient with a weakness to light was absolutely blinding.

She shot up at once, sitting up and gave a gasp that quickly became a ragged and choked cry until it stopped as sharply as it began sputtered into heavy breathing. Within a moment squinting and covering her eyes from the nearest light source with her hand. She didn't remember coming here! Where was this place anyways! What had happened?

…oh. Now she recalled it, right up until what she thought was the end, her body was still tense, but she felt she could relax somewhat.

This was a hospital room, wasn't it? She was in a bed and she was able to guess that from what she could distinguish from the blurs around her.

"…Machi?"

She thought she heard her voice, she couldn't be sure. It wouldn't have surprised her one bit if she were right there in the room with her.

"Machi? Where are you?" Everything was coming back into focus but only gradually.

In her stupor, Machi didn't even notice Daichi's and Momoko's presence - all that mattered was Hanako.

Well, that and the nurse, but she didn't seem to be coming, even after the call button.

"Hana-chan?" She voiced in response, her whole body trembling with a mix of expectation, hope, and fear it was a cruel false alarm.

That's when she noticed her eyes were opening. Machi was quick to squeeze Hanako's hand with both her own rather gently, to reassure her.

"I'm right here... Don't worry..."

Now now, don't let it get to your head that she called for you, specifically~

She was really getting up!

"That's right Hanako-chan. We're here."

Daichi would have specified exactly who 'we' was, but the name of the frail girl eluded him. He took a moment from gazing at Hanako to shoot a quizzical look at her. Hopefully, the 'what is your name' translated.

Momoko's eyes flashing when Hanako finally opened her eyes. She was okay! She was okay! "Y-yeah! W-w-we're here!" As it turns out, she didn't know much about the boy next to her. She managed to catch his glance though. "M-momoko." A quick introduction before returning her gaze to Hanako. She was okay!

She was there, she heard her, she felt her. "Machi…" She put her other hand on top of Machi's. Something was wrong, and beyond the fact that the back of the hand was pierced and tethered to an IV bag. She felt incredibly weak. Just that little motion took far more effort than it should have.

But, the two girls weren't alone in the room, were they? No, as clearly as she made out Machi…there was Momoko. That wasn't a surprise, she was really fond of Machi, and if she was going to stick around as much as possible, so was she. The fourth person there was…Oh, that was Daichi Nakamura, right?

"Oh…" She'd caused nothing but worry for all the people there, didn't she? And beyond that, too. There were others around who she knew would be upset and worried. Just because it wasn't her fault that time that she'd ended up like that, she rushed headlong into situations like that all the time.

"I'm…I'm terribly sorry, everyone. How long was I out?"

It didn't feel like it was just a day or two that she was out of it. Without her? What happened to Seiichi?

She felt a sudden lump in her stomach. Her shoulders slumped. She just knew that without her there, something happened to him.

Her old life…if it was truly over, wasn't it?

She couldn't- she couldn't live like that anymore. She had to find a new way. No matter what, she couldn't just keep doing this to everyone…

Several things happened at once, Hanako's eyes changed, the puils contracted into needle-like slits, and the iris changed to a faintly glowing yellow-green that was clearly unnatural. However, compared to what happened next, that was subtle.

Clytie appeared before her, without Hanako's mask being summoned, her image was ghostly, even more so than when summoned. Meanwhile, Hanako seemed in a trance. A shade passed over the form of the Nymph, and when it was completely shrouded in darkness, a gradual but stark change in her silhouette was clear. The new shape was likewise clearly feminine, and seemed shorter…if only because she lacked a head. Her outfit was different, as well.

When the darkness passed, floating before them was a woman with skin was covered in fine, coppery scales, like a snake's hide. She wore white robe of light fabric that left her arms and much of her legs exposed, obviously around her neck the robe was stained red. In one gold-bangled hand, the feminine figure held the it's own severed head writhing snake for hair, and eyes serenely closed.

It was over as abruptly as it began, the apparition of Medusa vanished, and Hanako's eyes returned to their normal looks. With a sigh she slumped back into bed.

There was also a voice in her head, a new one. Not harsh works spoken with a pleasing voice.

'Oh! Hi!'

"…Hi?"

'Yeah, you don't have to talk to yourself. I hear you just fine without all that. Anyways um, you've been over that "I am thou" stuff, so I'll cut that out. I'm Medusa, and let's get along well, okay?'

'…kay.'

No sooner than that, did the nurse come in. If she were a moment less tardy, she'd have viewed quite the scene.

"Oh! I'm sorry I'm late, is the patient alright?"
The young short haired young nurse seemed rather flustered and a bit out of breath, signs were obvious that she hustled to get there despite her lateness.

A flicker of happiness crossed Machi's face as soon as Hanako responded more properly. Happiness and relief. Those were the first couple powerful good emotions she felt in weeks, and she couldn't help but release a relieved sigh. Hanako was alive... She didn't leave...

For now.

"No, no... Don't apologize... It wasn't your fault..." Machi countered instantly, not even noticing the water accumulating in her visage. Her heart was pounding so hard, that it was hard to think rationally about anything at all.

"You've been out for a bit over three weeks..." The exact number of days, she didn't recall. It didn't matter to her at least. The very fact that Hanako was out in the first place was sickening.

Her train of thought was suddenly interrupted when Clytie appeared out of nowhere. Knowing her rather wacky tendencies, Machi was on her guard, but...

...How...

...Did she just ascend?

Machi watched the transformation with her very eyes, actually shocked for a change. From the appearance, the blonde was quick to deduce that was a representation of Medusa, as her mythological knowledge wasn't that rusty anymore with the whole Persona business.

"You..." She was interrupted once again, this time by the nurse finally walking in. She glanced at her, but didn't respond; the fact that Hanako was wide awake should be quite obvious.
