And just as quickly as it was thrust upon her, the unnatural fear that was enough to leave her a sitting duck in a fight was dispelled. She took a deep breath and looked up to the man. She recognized him on the spot. She made it her business to know any police personnel and affiliated people who were involved with anything Pesona-related. "Toru Motou…" He had a distinct look to him with his sharp dress, white hair and handsome features. He was also responsible for the information leak she was doing her best to mop up behind. But at least he seemed to spare her having to track down her scattergun to make sure it didn't fall in the wrong hands. When the chains could be heard, Maki was surprisingly calm. She alone had been anticipating a prompt visit from him. That isn't to say she was happy they were going to be chased by what may as well have been a borderline force of nature. But it seemed they had no choice now but to follow the Serizawas. To be separated now could have meant the untimely end of someone if they wandered in the wrong direction or straggled behind to far. "Right. The first one that catches them assist the Serizawa siblings in a similar fashion." She felt her own celerity-enhancing spell fading not long after it served her so well in captivity. She first cast it on Chika, enhancing the girl in a green Aura. "Whatever happens, keep going. I won't let him catch you, Chika, understand? Now go, I'll be right behind you!" She cast Sukukaja upon herself too, and intended to make good on her word. They were all getting out of this, alive and in one piece. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Chika felt a curious mixture of two things: a thrill of panic and a rush of relief when those idiot Serizawa kids ran up the steps without consideration for whether down was an option or not. Chika began to run after them, even before Maki cast her spell--and she was glad the officer had done that, because near the top she stumbled on a step, and it was only the enhanced reaction time afforded her by the magic that allowed her to catch herself before her face hit the corner of the top step. She burst out onto the landing, pausing for just a moment to try and figure out which direction the noise was coming from. Which way, which-- From the right. The chains sounded almost distant, and almost omnidirectional, but she could almost swear they were jangling most strongly from the right, a passage that--if Chika's memory was worth anything--led even deeper into the top level of the ruins than Maki's route had taken them. The Reaper wasn't between them and escape after all! If they ran as fast and hard as they could, then, maybe they would get out of this without injury yet... Never let it be said that Toru was anything but chivalrous; the journalist remained pressed against the wall until Akio passed. He also waited until Maki was almost level with him to start moving--once both he and she were at the top of the stairs, he extracted the officer's weapon from its awkward place in his jacket and held it out for her to take. "This belongs to you, yes?" he asked. "It wouldn't do for you to be unarmed now, officer." The man's green eyes caught movement down the righthand passage, then... a silhouette of tattered rags floating through the air in the dimness under a blown-out ceiling light. Two long barrels protruding from its arms--slowly, it turned toward them... And Toru thrust his hand out in the direction the group was running, just as that ominous figure was obscured from his vision by the wall. His Persona appeared: a man in rusted armor bearing a Christian cross, skeletal angel's wings spread out as it swooped ahead, not a single feather left on them--just bones and rotted, shredded flesh. Toru winced at the sight of those wings, but didn't allow it to break his concentration. The Persona promptly caught up with the two Serizawa siblings and cast Sukukaja on the boy, and then began preparing a second spell for his taller, longer-legged sister. The clinking of chains grew louder. Chika looked back as they ran, figuring the Reaper would have to negotiate a few corners to reach them. Toru knew that abomination's tactics a little too well to hope for that, though. "Straight shot to the exit!" Toru called. "Left, right, and then the middle-righthand path! Avoid corners like the plague! Walls are no impediment to the Reaper!" Walls are no--?! But Chika didn't have time to puzzle out exactly what that might mean; she turned the corner as fast as she could, almost unbalancing in her haste. Why hadn't she practiced at this sort of thing? Why?! Surely it would have been more useful to her than swordplay... |

Aleph and Yuka hurriedly ran through the ruins as they followed the man's directions. Of course, Aleph knew that walls wouldn't do shit against the Reaper. He actually saw the Reaper melt an entire wall by just floating through it, once. The Serizawas promptly turned the corner, not even bothering to notice the decrepit, supposedly winged figure cast the Sukukaja on both of them, making them go faster. While granted, it probably would've been a sad and pitiful sight to see, the Reaper shooting a megaton blast of your own weakness right to your face was ten times worse. |

Walls wouldn't protect them. Well, that wouldn't do anything to reassure the young man - couldn't things ever be easy in this goddamn place ? No, of course they couldn't, it was quite likely that the very reason the Reaper had been created was to make sure of that. But in a way, that was why it could allow them to grow stronger. He cast his Sukukaja on Toru - it would have been unwise to waste the energy for nothing -, and took off running at the fastest pace his legs would allow him - thankfully, the bookworm had had the bright idea to bless himself with a pair of decent legs. He focused his attention right in front of him, for he was aware that knowing where the Reaper's shots came from would do exactly nothing to help him survive them. He followed behind the Serizawa siblings, using that really tall girl in front of him as a moving goalpost to reach in his escape - he'd turned off his brain, and the only sound resounding in his ears was the one coming from his chest, slowed down and sharpened by the speed-boosting spell. |

"Go on ahead, make sure that Nakadachi-san doesn't fall behind." She accepted the gun with a grateful nod. Not that it wasn't much more than a mild irritant against what was after them now. She reached the top of the stairs and did not look back, her attention was focused on the others and their escape, especially Chika the frailest of them and therefore the most likely to lag behind. Left, right, middleright hand…she had the route well-recalled. But it was worrisome that walls meant nothing between the Reaper and its target, speed was everything as the race was as fixed. They had to navigate a path, it simply tracked them down and took the quickest path. But beyond all this? There was the need to run, run and live or she and her findings wouldn't have been good to anyone else ever again. |

Chika's breath was already starting to burn in her lungs, and they were barely reaching the second turn. She remembered a run just like this one, a run for her life alongside Natsumi, Naoya, and Spencer. It hadn't been the Reaper on their tail, but a small fleet of "Chibi Reapers." But those--those were powerful in swarms, they still had to negotiate around walls, there wasn't the knowledge that just one spell could rob any of them of an entire limb, or worse... Yet, when she looked back as they turned right, the Reaper still wasn't in view. The chains were muffled now, but at the same time, louder--more omnipresent. There was something unnatural about that sound, something, something-- Toru, who was keeping pace with the group from behind, willed Raphael to cast its second Sukukaja spell on Yuka Serizawa and then dismissed the broken angel, reclaiming that portion of his focus he had given to the Persona when he'd sent it to the front of the group. He, too, looked back, and narrowed his eyes when he saw that the Reaper wasn't there. At this point, it should have caught up, even if it were following their route through the corridors. And especially if it was just melting through the walls. Why hadn't it-- As they reached the third intersection--middle-right, and as Chika's running pace began to slow, a door burst open next to her, slamming into her right shoulder and sending her into a spinning stagger, eliciting a scream that her ring aborted on the way up as the impact brought with it a fresh wave of panic. Toru hissed a swear under his breath, reached out to steady her by the shoulder but missed, and forced himself to an awkward stop, shouting to the others: "I'VE GOT IT! KEEP GOING!" Chika had, in her effort to regain balance, caught herself on the wall, facing backward, propping herself up with her left arm. Toru rushed to her side, and the thing that had fled the room--an Armored Ursa--roared, and... promptly fled in the opposite direction. It took a moment for Toru to realize why. The chains were coming from inside the room. "Nakadachi, move!" He gripped her by the shoulder, pulled her away, even cast Sukukaja on the girl as he pulled at her to get her moving again, but he wasn't fact enough. The wall began to bubble and melt. The felt a dim heat against her forearm, and as she moved from the wall, her left hand pushed flat against it for support so she could set her feet underneath her properly. And then, the color changed. Red. Pain Orange. Agony Yellow. Blinding Blue. Chika's wide eyes snapped to the wall, she tried to withdraw her hand but it was stuck, stuck in the now-bubbling, melting ooze the wall became until finally it opened, folding out. Chika wanted to scream, wanted to pull her hand away but it would come out wouldn't separate from the wall and she could feel the heat radiating from it she would burn alive she would-- "NO!" There was a flash of blue beside Chika, a flash that shone in sync with Toru's yell. But the girl had only eyes for own arm, the flesh had ignited, it was burning away before her very eyes and the flame was spreading out, down her arm like a fuse, it would consume her. Then there was a flash of steel and Raphael's sword cut through Chika's upper arm like a straw practice post, severing it before the flame could get there. Chika blinked in blank, dull surprise. Her arm was gone, there was blood, blood, lots of blood--she felt herself being swept up in a pair of strong arms-- But somehow, the loss of that arm was a relief. She couldn't feel the burning anymore. Couldn't--couldn't-- Couldn't think but there was no burning, just familiar pain, pain like the time with the Wall Shark, ha, that was nothing... nothing It was with a strange, hazy detachment that Chika watched the wall melt away, and the cloaked, one-eyed, revolver-bearing figure loom over her from the new hole in the wall, which had also consumed the doorway and sent the door itself crashing to the floor. And then the Reaper was getting further away, she was being swung around so she couldn't see it anymore and there was motion... "RUN! NOW!" she heard the journalist scream. And she tried to move her legs, but they weren't touching the ground so that was pointless. She opened her mouth to say, I'm bleeding but the Silence magic wouldn't let her but then she realized she probably didn't need to say because the man running with her in his arms was being bled on. So she was pretty sure he knew. Alright then. Did he have healing magic? If not, she would probably be a bit dizzy before she could heal herself... |

If the Serizawas ever saw anything while they were busy running away from the Reaper with everyone else, all they managed to notice was the man running with Chika who now had a severed and bleeding arm. Aleph stared in horror, utterly mortified at the sight. However, as much he wanted to, he couldn't much now that the Reaper had actually arrived. Yuka was equally shocked at the sight of both the Reaper and Chika's arm. However, both Serizawas kept running anyway, but not without casting their respective Dias over their shoulders and onto Chika, for all the good that would do. Akio, ran, ran, ran, and would run until his legs weren't able to push him forward anymore - he didn't look back, but the sounds that reached his ears informed him that his companions had encountered som problems with their escape, however. He caught Aleph's look of horror as he looked behind him - but he couldn't do that himself, he wasn't far enough, it'd be way too risky... So he continued to run, and would only look back when there would be the entrance to these Ruins between him and the unstoppable force of destruction that was chasing them. He couldn't do anything - Charming the Reaper struck him as the kind of things that defined "hilariously impossible"... |

Contact nearly burnt her alive. Casual contact with the wall it was burning though had transferred enough energy to do that to poor Nakadachi. It meant that for all her intentions to see Chika and the rest of them though it safely, she was powerless to actually enforce them in light of such an entity. Don't falter, don't stop. That was all she could focus on. Motou had Chika, severing her arm probably just saved her life. The rest could be sorted out safely out of the ruins, out of his domain. Above all else, she had to stay calm, and keep her wits about her. There was nothing that could be done for anyone then or after the fact if she wasn't able to manage that much. |

This hallway was, essentially, a long, straight shot to the entrance that Toru had used to get into the ruins--a different entrance from the one Maki had led the others through, but right now the need to find their way back to Maki's car once outside was preferable to making their way back to the "correct" entrance. The Reaper's chains seemed to ring in Toru's ears as the abomination drifted through the hole it had made and into the hallway--and if there was one thing that was perfect for preventing a mind from wandering to a burnt-and-severed limb laying on the ground, half-buried in a blob of melted lab wall... it was an incarnation of Death itself, mere yards behind, slowly turning to regard its fleeing victims, perhaps the only delay between that moment and certain annihilation being the question of how exactly they would die being turned over in the Reaper's inscrutable mind. Unfortunately, this hallway was also a straight shot. Toru realized this just in time, and if there was anything he was grateful for, it was Aleph and Yuka thinking to cast their own Dia spells on Chika. The arm did not grow back, but two such spells were at least enough to slow the bleed to a trickle, and for now that was enough. It allowed Toru to concentrate on simply making sure he could get this girl safely out, and so he summoned Raphael to cast the most potent Sukukaja enhancement spell on himself that the rotting archangel could produce. A flash of white surrounded him, and he turned his head, a quick, awkward peek out the corner of his eye toward the Reaper. They had, within these precious seconds, put enough distance between themselves and it that magic wasn't a feasible option for the creature, but it still had two very powerful guns and a long corridor that would keep all of its targets directly in front of it. As it raised its lefthand weapon, Toru realized his folly. This "straight shot" to the exit might as well have been a Reaper's shooting gallery--and that unstoppable Shadow's gun was aimed at him, the most vulnerable of the lot, laden with this dead weight, human baggage. NOTHING OF VALUE WILL BE LOST IF THIS GIRL IS THROWN ASIDE. LET HER PERISH; SHE IS SAFER DEAD, THEN ALIVE. Raphael's voice was laced with derision; not only was this girl prone to fits of sadistic aggression, she was also allied with Samurakami. A dangerous, unstable girl who would willingly give aid to a criminal. Not even a powerful user; she was of no value to the Persona-user community, none at all-- Toru jerked to the right, still clinging to the girl. In the next instant, there was a deafening gunshot from behind. A chunk of wall to the left blew apart in a spray of plaster and debris--just in front of Akio. That shot might have passed so close to its unintended target that he would feel the wind as it passed, but even then, if some of that debris should hit-- No. They were nearly there. Once they reached the end of this hall, they could turn. The exit was in that very side-passage, just a random cavern entrance, a crevice in the laboratory interior. When they reached that outer hall, the walls would obscure them again, give them the final crucial moments they needed to put the ruins barrier between themselves and Death. And it was right there... |
