Aleph smirked as the bird cage burned and singed under the effect of the Agi. Just a few more hits and it would go down faster than a diseased cow. Aleph noticed in the corner of his eye that Yuka seemed to be coming back, bringing along that irritating journalist man person thing from the mall. Though, all Aleph cared about at the moment was making sure that the bird cage would just explode and die, like everything else in the ruins.

Soon, Aleph found himself angry for some reason. Not just any kind of angry. He wasn't just angry now. He was absolutely boiling with burning and seething rage. He now hated the thing hated the damn thing more than he hated Kakeru or Suzu. Or even Shou or Machi, though he never wanted to admit that. Aleph threw out his arms and yelled in blistering fury, eyes glowing full-on scarlet red. He then threw yet another Agi at the bird cage with as much force as he could.

It had to die, whether the thing liked it or not.

Meanwhile, Yuka finally came into view of the bird cage and Aleph, who seemed to be yelling and screaming with rage so powerful that even the strongest beast would soon find themselves sitting ducks against it. She had no idea what happened to the zombie girl or Chika or Akio. Though frankly, all Yuka cared about at that moment was helping her brother defeat the Shadow then figure out what the fucking hell was wrong with him. So with that, Yuka summoned her mask to her face and fired a Magna at the bird cage.

The sound of Yamada's voice rung in Akio's ears - he was pretty eager to know whatever had happened to her while she'd been separated from the rest of them, but he forced his mind to stay on the track related to the battle at hand. "Yes, we should." he replied to Chika's proposal to link up with Officer Yamada - yes, that was a sound plan, as long as they were careful. She'd disappeared for some time, and considering the sheer amount of nasty tricks the Shadows had up their sleeves, you could never know if your friend was really your friend until you walked out of the entrance...

Then it was time for the two Shadows to come barreling down the stairs like... two otherworldly abominations barreling down the stairs. Akio's breath stayed in his lungs until he'd dodged out of their way. His eyes found the torn bundle of cloth, once again - but he had no time to concentrate on that. He'd investigate it when danger would be gone.

Chika yelled at him to kill them before they got back up, so he tried to do exactly that. The boy shot a Garu towards the downed Handmaiden, and prepared another one to cast as soon as he could.

Maki wore the mask that appeared in her hand, and surveyed the situation: Akio and Chika were present as were two Shadows. At least until the larger, more imposing one disintegrated into the bubbling goo all their kind were ultimately made of.

So that just left one immediate danger. And two concerns. The first: Just how long did her capture take? They weren't likely to have enough time to waste before the Reaper would come for them. Even less if the person asking the questions though that Agent was who she suspected.

She chose the voice her next worry directly after she attacked the Vile Handmaiden. Akio's Garu proved effective and the lesson that some Shadows reflected certain attacks was enough to have her play it safe, she followed his Garu up with one of her own.

"Where are the Serizawas? I think we need to leave as soon as feasible."
Even as she spoke that, she keenly listened for signs the Agent had decided to pursue her after all, or worse, the rattling of distant chains.

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
A blast of wind from Akio's hand ripped into the Handmaiden's torso like a spiraling punch made of... well, air. Very high pressure air, though, enough that the Shadow's entire body gave a jerk. Maki arrived on the landing just in time to see the pale creature struggling to its feet, and as she asked after the Serizawa siblings, the Handmaiden opened its mouth and loosed high-pitched shriek laced with Evil Smile.

Chika felt a jolt in her heart. For a moment, no more than a second, her brain was convinced that she couldn't see, nor move her hands or legs, or open her mouth, and there was a chill--a chill all over, cold air, nothing between her and it anywhere--

--then, she pushed it back. She pushed it back, but felt a sting in the ring finger of her left hand. She glanced down, and saw through the eyeholes of her mask that the ring had triggered during that brief moment of pure fear. She had escaped the fear magic but she had been silenced anyway!

The irony of that punishment hit her like a slap in the face. She looked up, at the Handmaiden--blasted back and stumbling after the second wind spell hit it in the face. Her lips parted in an angry snarl.

She rushed forward and, gripping her sword, swinging with the sharp of the blade--not her arms--she swung for the Handmaiden's neck. The creature's black eyes widened and it tried to throw itself back, but it couldn't get far enough. It avoided decapitation, but Kizuna tore open the front of its neck, and then something else happened:

It stepped on the bundle of rags it had dropped, and that bundle slid forward, along with its foot. The Handmaiden unbalanced, fell backward, and the back of its head hit the railing of the stairs with an almighty, echoing CLANG!

And the creature went limp. Went limp, but didn't melt, it just fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes. The bundle slid across the ground and then stopped a few feet from where it had started, still on the landing, and... still inanimate. But a champion of war now, apparently.

The gash in the Vile Handmaiden's neck was leaking copious amounts of black fluid now, which hissed and sizzled as it came in contact with the clothes the Shadow had stolen. Its black eyes hovered, just barely open. The Rakunda spell was still in effect, and it was vulnerable, again, but whether the other two could capitalize would depend on how they fared against its Fear spell.

As for Chika, she was in no state to cast any spells at all, nor to answer Maki's question.

---

Toru sighed as Aleph let out a yell of pure, uncontrolled fury. Oh my, he thoughts. It looks like I arrived just in time to start handing out medicine. And he extended a hand toward Aleph, flicked his wrist, and cast another Patra spell. That would do the trick. Mental-disruption magics were just so irksome, weren't they?

The Dancing Lure, in fact, managed to dance out of the way of the Agi spell. It was on its proverbial toes now, it wouldn't be caught by that spell a third time! A glitter of magic was just then gathering around it, another building Diarama spell...

...which it never had a chance to cast, because a really big rock caught it mid-dance before it could, smashed the bars of its cage, and dragged the annoying blighter through the air until both it and the rock impacted the wall beside the stairs. Its chain-and-rope body clinked flacidly and then it melted, the Magna spell having left a small but respectable dent in the wall. As the rock fell away and thumped to the ground, the three Persona-users above would see the black stain in the middle of that dent.

And then they would hear a shriek from below. Toru blinked, and felt a weak push on his mind, which he shook his head to shake off. There was Fear magic in that noise, but distance had weakened it. "Ah, so... there is fighting just down the stairs," the journalist said. "We should assist..."

Aleph growled as the bird cage dodged his Agi spell. Son of a BITCH! Now it was really pissing Aleph off. Damnit. Why won't it just die? The little annoying mother--wait, what was that?

"Huh?" Aleph said, finding all the fiery rage and hatred burning inside him suddenly disappear. He then watched as the bird cage was knocked clear out by Yuka's Magna spell and smashed into a wall, finally killing it. Well, then.

What the hell was that? First you were raging and flaming all over the place, now you're perfectly calm again?

It's a shame now. I loved it when you were imagining that Shadow with Machi's face on it. Better to take it out on Shadows instead of the real thing, huh?

Yuka sighed in relief. The annoying bird cage was finally dead, and her brother didn't look like he was about to go on a flaming, homicidal rampage with Fire magic. That much was good. However, both Serizawas heard a shriek from below, possibly from the stairs. Yuka and Aleph both nodded when the man suggested assisting their friends.

"Yeah." Aleph said.

"Sounds good." Yuka said.

With the total shit storm that was the entire battle over and done with, Aleph and Yuka resheathed their blades and took off down the stairs, hoping the others were okay.

Not only did the Handmaiden's scream drill itself into his ears, it also drilled itself into his brain - Akio cringed as he felt his mind being polluted by the spell the scream had been carrying. He did his very best to shake off the panic creeping into his brain, extending his arm once more to try and fire another blast of compressed air towards the dying Shadow - but the fear spell was just a little bit too much to allow him to concentrate enough despite his previous preparation of the spell. Damnit, why couldn't he-

Maki's voice resounded again, and that allowed him to get a grip back in reality - his train of thought attached itself to the last familiar thing he'd experienced, and he shot the Garu forward, waiting another couple of seconds to make sure the air that would go through his lips would form the words he wanted it to form. "...They're upstairs." he breathed out.

If the Handmaiden had been killed by their spells, he'd walk up to the bundle of clothes and pick it up: he'd observe it for a handful of instants before putting it in his jacket's pocket - he'd see for himself what it was once they'd be out of the Ruins.

Capitalize on the enemy's vulnerability to finish it off? Maki would have loved to…but there was one big problem.

She couldn't fight off the overwhelming wave of fear. Not this time. Maybe her resistance to it had been weakened given that she'd just extricated herself from a situation that had already put her in a heightened and jittery state. Maybe it was just the fortunes of war, but whatever the reason, shrugging off the Evil Smile was no option. Maki found herself deep in the grips of terror.

Her body refused to move as she wanted, reduced to being stiffly rooted in place. She was shivering. She had a cold sweat, and catching her breath had grown harder by the second. It didn't even occur to her to attack with her Persona. The voice was indistinct, hard to get. It was as though it were yelling at her from a great distance away.

Fight! Fight! Don't submit to this curse so easily!

At least she didn't fall into total hysterics and run away screaming, or hallucinate. But fighting off those symptoms took almost all of her willpower.

Akio's Garu spell... did not finish off the Vile Handmaiden.

Injured and dazed as it was, this was a Shadow that wasn't about to be vanquished so easily. The blast of wind tore into its clothing and beat into its flesh, but for as much damage caused to its body by this spell, there was equal pain--which brought with it focus. A blind upward grab, and then a second one, and it gripped the railing above it, and pulled--

And then there was a gunshot, and its head exploded.

Toru Motou had stopped midway down the stairs. The Handmaiden, prone and slow-moving as it was, had been an easy target, and with its throat leaking black ooze and its pitch-black eyes, lack of hair, skin pale as death... who could have mistaken it for a human? The journalist sighed, lowering his gun, and slowly resumed his walk down the steps. "I have absurdly bad luck, walking into so many critical situations during these ruins expeditions," he said in a faux-weary voice. "One would think the fates conspire to keep me from making any progress at all down here."

His eyes flitted from one unfamiliar face to the next, from Akio to Maki, and then to Chika, who he knew of from a previous investigation--but could not have recognized by sight alone.

When he saw that Maki was unmoving, he sighed again. And then he pointed his gun to the ceiling in one hand, and raised the other to cast yet another Patra spell. How convenient, he thought, that he should arrive when everyone in this group needed a Patra spell to clear their heads. "Pardon me, ma'am," Toru asked, looking squarely at the older woman. "You would be Officer Yamada... no? Or is there still a search to be made?"

Chika, who was now cautiously looking up the stairs at this newcomer, nodded. Toru said, "Ah," and then turned around.

"Well then," said the journalist. "Things appear sufficiently pear-shaped that we should probably--"

And then, the sound of chains clanking cut across the man's speech, as if to balance the karma of his even being there in the first place. Toru closed his eyes, and then finished:

"...leave."

And he promptly pressed himself to the side of the stairs, so as not to impede the Serizawa siblings as they ran up. Chika, however, froze. The chains weren't coming from down the stairs.

They were coming from above. That meant--wait, no, that meant the Reaper was up there--but that didn't mean it was between them and escape just yet, maybe they could still get past--

Chika looked to Akio and then Maki, her dark cheeks losing a fair bit of their color. They couldn't run down, could they? That would mean--that would mean running until they could find another way up! There was no way she could run that long--!

Aleph and Yuka ran down the stairs until they encountered Chika and Akio fending off the zombie woman, until the silver-haired man finished it off by shooting it with its revolver. Aleph and Yuka sighed with relief as they finally saw Maki, who seemed paralyzed with fear until the other man apparently worked a healing spell on her.

Aleph and Yuka listened to the other man as he questioned Maki then explained the situation at hand. Then, they heard chains. Chains. Oh shit.

"What's that noise?" Yuka asked.

"Our cue to run the fuck outta' this place or we're all screwed." Aleph said.

So, with that, Aleph and Yuka took off running up the stairs and towards the exit, with Aleph holding onto Yuka's arm while Yuka quickly aimed to grab the other man's arm again to make sure he didn't lag behind.

Akio was about to savor the sweet taste of victory on his tongue for an instant, but at this moment...

Chains.

The Ruins reminded him of their nature. Death was still lurking around the corner - or rather, floating around the corner, and it was coming for them, too. "Yes." He acknowledged Toru's statement, but didn't have time to formulate his thoughts on what should have been done to avoid the Reaper before the Serizawa siblings decided to take off running on their own - goddamnit., they could split up like that...

"If you have Sukukaja, use it !" the boy said, casting the spell on himself and waiting to see if everyone was running as well - he prepared another speed-boosting spell to be cast at whoever who needed it most.
