Was it a mistake? That remained to be seen. But Maki would even admit to herself it was ill-advised. Though being at the mercy of a Shadow possibly under the control of Miss Yellow was so undesirable as to take the risk.

She held tightly to the gun. Trying to force it away from her face and body and absolutely not letting go. Her other hand tore free and she grasped the barrel with that hand. She didn't stop and contemplate what it meant when the Agent was only using one hand, not until she was getting drowsier.

"…dammit…"

Everything was hazy, and he head felt light, while her body? So heavy…despite her vigilance, her grip on the pistol loosened, every so slightly.

Thoughts were getting hard to form coherently, but the last one she had… before she tried stifling a yawn.

…she too…had magic.

No, not on the agent, that was useless. The web. The web anchoring her to the floor. Fire.

Fire!

An Agi spell began burning though the webs, and just as she had hoped, though her own clothes too. Flames licked painfully at her flesh. It replaced the oppressive drowsiness with, a sudden shock.

"…you talkin' to me?!"

What she wanted to do was snatch the gun away completely and unload several rounds into it's guts. She'd settle for just getting to her feet again despite her best efforts towards the former.

What's worse? She was fairly certain that she heard what sounds like a commotion. Or was it just her anxieties for the others getting the better of her?

Akio's wind spell blew the Lure clear out of the air; it's rope-and-chain body turned to face Akio as he approached and was cleanly removed from his path, slammed into the wall, and left hovering dizzily against it, the bars dented, the cage door bent and open, the woodpecker inside flapping and chirping frantically--that was, until the cage was engulfed in Aleph's Agi spell, which roasted the poor bird inside alive. The bird fell off its perch, flopping pathetically to the bottom of its cage. But the Dancing Lure itself wasn't quite dead yet.

The Vile Handmaiden took a clean hit across the chest despite its attempt to jump back from Yuka--its face became pained as the sword slashed through shirt, jacket, and flesh. One side of the front of its jacket flopped down and swung awkwardly at its front as it moved--thunking heavily against the Handmaidens hip, a bulge in the inside pocket now clearly visible: something was in there. But the Handmaiden no longer seemed to care about Yuka. A wave of healing magic washed over it, undoing the damage: a Diarama spell cast by the Dancing Lure. Giving the two Serizawa siblings a look of uncaring disdain, the Handmaiden made a sharp, waving motion with its hand--and the Dancing Lure swooped in, not casting a spell or using any kind of offensive skill, merely rocketing through the air as fast as its air-swimming motions could take it, on a collision course of Akira Serizawa's face.

The Handmaiden grinned, then, and a wave of magic accompanied the Lure's suicide charge, a wave of magic designed to cause fear and in some cases, hallucinatory waking nightmares: Evil Smile. The magic washed over the outer half of the stairwell area, blanketing both Serizawas, and then the Handmaiden turned, raising its black wakizashi. It was intent on pursuing Akio down the stairs, and prevent him from interfering with the Gigas.

Speaking of which, Chika was already riding both gravity's pull and the Beastly Gigas, the tip of her sword spearing the monster's lung--she clung to her blade like some kind of strange control stick, and felt her teeth knocking together painfully with each step the Gigas slid down. It was like riding a living sled...

Then, at the midsection of the stairs, where the steps ceased on an elevated landing and did an about-face to continue their descent, the Gigas slammed headfirst into the siding of the stairs. Its response was a growl, a dizzy, aimless flailing of its arms, and a roar.

Unfortunately the flailing was a bit of its problem; one of the monster's meat-like hands hit Chika square in the shoulder. It knocked her back--but she clung to her sword's grip as though it were her only lifeline, and when she toppled backward onto the steps, she not only knocked the back of her head against the corner of one... she tore the sword, and a fair chunk of Gigas hide, out of the monster's chest.

This left the Gigas howling in pain, and it also left Chika splayed over the bottom three steps, dizzy, and feeling a sharp crack in her right shoulder blade. Only when she hit the stairs did Kizuna fall from her grasp. Neither she nor the Gigas had succeeded in getting to their feet by the time Akio reached them...

---

When Maki's grip on the pistol loosened, the Agent wasted no time in twisting the barrel out of her grip. It had every intention of forcing its arm down over Maki's shoulders, pushing her to the ground, and renewing its assault with yet more Dormina magic, but then the damaged webbing ignited in a flash of flame.

"What the hell--?!"

The Agent jumped to its feet, leveling the gun, preparing to fire. Then...

...Then, it began to feel drowsy. The yellow flickered momentarily out of its eyes as a that same purple haze drifted from the doorway, from the doorway, and engulfed the Agent fully. The sunglasses narrowed, as if the lenses were eyelids trying to drift shut.

It shook its head rapidly, the yellow flaring back to life in its eyes, and moved to raise its gun again. But the moment of vulnerability had happened: the damage was done.

As the Unremitting Doppelganger pulled its hand back through the door and slipped out of sight (all Maki would see was a brief glimpse of its glowing red eye and torn, bloodied clothing), it whispered to itself, "Quid pro quo, motherfucker," and sprinted away--up the hall, in the direction it had come. All it needed to do was lay low for a while, until the Reaper rolled on in to chase these assholes out of there.

Then it could do what it had planned on doing and just go pick up the stuff Wei had left for it. Easy!

Of course, Aleph had expected the bird cage Shadow to fight back. However, he didn't expect to fly straight into his face in a kamikaze style attack. Aleph was soon knocked backwards and landed on his back and head. The pain he felt when he hit his head was one of the worst he ever felt in his life. It was so bad that he didn't even notice the sudden wave of terror wash over him. He suddenly understood jack shit. He had to get up now, but when he tried it only made the pain in his head worse. So, he was basically just sitting on the floor clutching his head in pain while suddenly afraid of everything.

Shit.

Meanwhile, Yuka noticed for a split second that something was in the zombie girl's jacket, in the inside pocket. Just when she was considering trying to take it, fear came over her. Oh God. That was a stupid idea. What was she thinking? Yuka took her katana, then feeling the need for self-preservation, turned around and started running in the opposite direction of the zombie Shadow, thus leaving her brother a sitting duck.

Shit.

Akio darted right towards Chika - he registered the sounds of the ongoing battle towards him, but he judged the direct safety of the red-haired girl more urgent and her predicament more dire than these of the Serizawa siblings. As he dashed past the Gigas, the boy cast a Marin Karin on the fallen creature - even if it didn't turn it to their side, he hoped the spell would distract the Shadow long enough for him to take a hold of Chika.

The boy stopped next to Chika, kneeling next to the girl, extending a hand towards her to help her get back to her feet. "Did you injure yourself ?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the Gigas the whole time - that had been a nasty fall, and he doubted that her weakness to physical damage had quite likely made it harder.

He was weak to the same kind of damage, but he wanted to give the Gigas another target when the time would come for it to get back to its feet.

The opportunity was there, and she didn't intend to let it slip away, not after all the trouble and risks she had to go though to get that far. When the agent faltered for just a moment, she rushed for a second, that was more than enough time with her enhanced speed and sharpened perceptions.

It was even more lucky, now that she could move freely, that she was dealing with a humanoid Shadow. It made the process so much simpler to reach out, force the gun barrel safely away from it's body and attempt to throw it on its back by breaking its center of gravity with one leg moved behind its leg, and with a firm grip on its shoulder, snatch it down.

She hoped to gain control of the gun. She was prepared for the possibility it was just an integral part of the Shadows body, however.

She caught sight of the red eyes in the darkness, and feared the worst, but when it muttered something and left, she knew she didn't have to worry about it at the moment. A second of these Agent Shadows couldn't have come at a worse time. Her attention was back to the Agent.

"Miss Yellow, right? You are talking though and controlling this Shadow somehow? I don't intend to answer anymore of your questions, sorry." In any case the sounds of trouble were clearly nearby, and she'd gamble that was her group come to rescue her, or another group of Persona users dealing with Shadows. Either way escape had to be her top priority.

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
A man had entered the ruins just a few minutes prior. He had heard the sound of teenagers calling out--it seemed he'd arrived at an uncomfortable time. Now, he stood over a discarded police handgun. His only thought at that moment was finding out what had become of its owner; possessing a custom-made, rose-etched revolver of his own, and of a slightly higher caliber than this particular piece he would be willing to bet, Toru Motou had no need of guns that had "fallen off the back of the truck" himself. He bent down to pick up the gun, and as he straightened up, stowing it in his jacket...

...A very tall young lady rounded the corner at a sprint and damn near bowled him over.

"Hold, there! Easy!" Toru spluttered, holding out his hands to catch the girl by the shoulder. She seemed overcome with fear--on contact, he cast a Patra spell without giving it much thought. His grip on the girl's shoulders was tenuous, however--he had only one free hand and one that held his revolver (finger off the trigger for safety), to steady her with.

What Yuka would see when she took the time to examine this roadblock was a handsome man just a little taller than she herself, looking to be in his upper twenties, with long silver-gray hair tied in a ponytail, face bearing a concerned expression a thin mustache. He wasn't dressed in his professional wear, but rather slim-fit denim pants and a jacket. The moment he was sure Chika wasn't under the influence of some Fear or Distress magic, Toru would let go.

"What has happened here? Did I hear someone shouting for a police officer, earlier...?"

---

The Dancing Lure drifted back as Yuka retreated, hovering over Aleph. It did not, however, have any real offensive abilities, or even an inclination to keep mindlessly dive-bombing with its strange body--that had simply been a directive from the Handmaiden, who wanted something to cover its back...

The Lure cast Diarama, mending some of the bends in its cage bars. The roasted woodpecker twitched, twitched, and some of the features regenerated...

---

The Handmaiden reached the top of the stairs, peering down. It grimaced a bit, when it saw Akio reach Chika at the bottom, and extended a hand toward his back. Its intention was to cast Hell's Judgement, a dark-elemental spell that would wrack its target's body for significant damage, and the dark energy swirled around its hand, but then the Gigas staggered to its feet. The Handmaiden paused, sending the Gigas a command--a command to descend upon the two just as it unleashed its spell.

And somehow, it felt its command... hadn't gotten through.

The Gigas, now looking straight at the Handmaiden, took a step toward the stairs, then another, and then it jumped, right over the prone Chika, landing deftly on the step just above her head, behind both her and Akio.

The impacted of its heavy mass on the step mere inches above her head sparked a jolt of fear for her skull in Chika, and she snapped up into a sitting position, the motion only serving to emphasis how little knowledge of "up" and "down" she had at the moment. Leaning forward, she clutched at her head, staggering to her feet and stumbling toward the railing. Squinting, she looked back, and saw the Gigas's back, and muttered, "Wha--?" The redhead wasn't exactly in a prime state to remember that Akio had Charm magic at his disposal.

The Handmaiden, black eyes narrowed, lips curled in frustration, let loose Hell's Judgement on the Gigas instead. The Gigas took one step up the stairs, and found itself stymied by the spell, coming to a halt just one step up... its body visibly began to wither and erode everywhere, and its mask cracked and chipped both visibly and audibly. Then...

One step, two steps, and it was bounding up the stairs toward the Handmaiden, pulling back its arm. The Handmaiden raised its wakizashi in defense, but the oncoming Swift Strike was too... swift. With almost unnatural speed, the Gigas's fist slammed into the side of the Handmaiden's head, knocking its all too ordinary-sized body into the side-railing almost like a rag-doll. The black wakizashi fell from its grip, and it fell, tumbling, down the stairs...

...But the Gigas wasn't about to let it fall along with its sword. One mighty hand reached down and caught the Handmaiden by the ankle. Its momentum interupted, it lay struggling upside-down across the top stairs. The wakizashi skidded and skipped down the stairs, but something came dislodged from the Handmaiden's jacket, then--from the inside pocket, in fact, something that had been ill-fitted to such a pocket to start with:

A small, tightly-wrapped bundle of torn, white material, bound with strips of old, thin, frayed string. A makeshift package of sorts, or rather, a protective covering for an item inside: it slipped out of the inner pocket of the Handmaiden's appropriated jacket, and tumbled down the stairs, one step after another. Unless Akio interrupted this object's journey to the floor, it would simply flop to the ground on the landing, and sit there, doing nothing, an inanimate object.

Meanwhile, the Handmaiden flailed its arm around, preparing another Hell's Judgement spell to blast the Gigas with. If it couldn't cure Charm magic, it would simply have to put its fellow Shadow out of commission and fight on its own.

---

The Agent's leg was swept out from under it, its body weight forced it back... the Agent resisted physical damage, so the impact didn't hurt it much at all, but that didn't change the fact that it was prone on the ground. In its effort to maintain a grip on its gun, however, another gunshot rang out... both it and the previous shot would be audible from the stairs, as this gun wasn't appear to be equipped with a silencer of any kind.

It did not, however, relinquish its hold on the weapon. Integral part of its body or not, its resistance to physical damage came with a resistance to physical twisting--it had a much easier time holding onto the weapon through the fall than a normal person would have.

Setting its leg on the floor, it attempted to push itself up, but for the moment, Maki was there, holding it in place. As it struggled to force itself up, it would become clear to Maki that its sheer physical strength outstripped hers a fair bit. It wouldn't be held down for very long, and indeed, the moment she spoke, it swung an awkward left hook at Maki's jaw.

The lenses of its glasses had shifted back to black. Whether it was indeed Miss Yellow speaking through the Agent, or some other intelligence, or this Shadow itself simply pretending at intelligence, the Agent of NONE spoke no more.

Yuka bounded her way through the ruins, searching for the exit, when suddenly for some reason, she was suddenly stopped by somebody--or something--and she found herself panicking even more. What the hell--wait, what? The fear that was burdening Yuka had mysteriously disappeared from her mind, and she found reality returning to her again. Yuka turned to the one who stopped her, and noticed a silver-gray haired man who was probably in his twenties, asking her about what happened.

"I 'dunno. We were looking for Officer Yamada. We got seperated while we were fighting some Shadows." Yuka told him. "Then, we came across more Shadows, then suddenly I got scared for some reason. So I ran off and--"

.....

And then it hit her.

You idiot.

"Oh shit! Akira!" Yuka cried. She was so scared for her life that she, like an idiot, had left her own brother and his friends at the mercy of those Shadows, one of which could probably kick all of their asses six ways to Pluto and beyond. What was she thinking?

Not even bothering to ask the man who he was, Yuka quickly took off running in the right direction, towards where Aleph, Chika and Akio were. But then, she stopped, ran back to where the other man was, grabbed his arm and started running back again, taking the man with her.

---

Aleph clutched and rubbed his paining head as he continued to sit on the floor. Why didn't he dodge that stupid bird cage thing? Damnit. Now he was going to have a really long day in bed tomorrow. With that, he casted Dia on his head and the pain began to slowly fade. It still hurt, but at least he could think clearly again.

Remembering where he was, he slowly got back up and looked at the bird cage Shadow which was now healing itself, like it healed the zombie girl. Aleph grimaced. A Shadow with healing magic. Nice. Aleph attempted to stop the bird cage's healing by summoning Adonis and firing another Agi at the bird cage.

Akio's eyes quickly shifted towards the Giga and its apparent master, just long enough for him to witness that his little gambit had worked - divide and conquer, they said, and sowing the seeds of strife amongst their enemies was the surest way to take them down as quickly as they could have. The young man stood up along with Chika, summoning his mask over his face for another casting. "Charm magic. If we wanna try to slip past them, now's the moment." he commented, his eyes shifting to the red-haired girl.

"Or we could concentrate our fire on one of these and take out the other while it's still weakened. I'd prefer this second option." the boy added, keeping his tone calm - keeping a cool head was paramount in a battle like that. He did notice the bundle of torn clothes - and made a quick mental note to go catch it when the battle would be over -, buut he preffered to keep himself focused on the battle at hand.

Though she didn't have a weapon, as soon as it landed and was in little position to stop her, Maki had no intention of holding the stronger Shadow down, nor of getting struck by it's swing. She instead swayed sharply to the side, took several steps back and planned to make good on the intentions her words implied, sprinting out of the room and just then noticing that some of her clothing was still alight.

She patted it down with her hands as she headed straight towards the sounds of conflict. Her last thoughts to the Agent of NONE were a parting shot, an Agi aimed directly at its face. Meant more to deter it from giving chase or taking proper aim at her fleeing form than to do real harm.

"Nakadachi! Sakuraba! Serizawas! I'm coming your way! I'm okay and we should leave as soon as I get there!" Other than the fact that judging by the sounds of familiar voices and large bodies moving, they encountered Shadows? She had no idea what their current situation was.

Aleph's fire spell blazed through the Lure, igniting the woodpecker within yet again. Spinning wildly through the air in its frantic bid to put the flames out, the Lure let loose an aimless wave of magic: Valiant Dance. It was most unfortunate for the enemy that most of the Persona-user group had spread away from the battlefield. Literally the only targets for it to hit were Aleph, and the two Shadows near the top of the stairs. The Handmaiden, more mentally powerful than the average Shadow, experienced a spike of irritation before shaking the influence off, and blasting the Gigas with a second Hell's Judgment spell at the hulking monster.

The Gigas swayed and twitched under this final wave of dark magic, and released the Handmaiden's leg. Gravity reclaimed the Shadow, which slid further down the stairwell. Chika, still dazed, heard shouting in the distance... Officer Yamada? Officer Yamada was okay, she was coming, she wasn't far away--

"We should... link up... with Yamada-san," Chika said, lifting a hand. The two Shadows... no, wait, the Gigas was on its knees now. Dead? Almost dead? They... hang on... "T-Tisiphone..."

Chika managed, through a great effort of will, to call her mask back to her face. When Tisiphone appeared, it didn't look as solid as usual, but this time--maybe...

The apparition lifted a hand, and cast another Rakunda spell--this one on the Vile Handmaiden. When the barely-living Gigas twisted around and slam-tackled the Handmaiden, charging its entire body with another Swift Strike, the damage was more noticible--"noticible" as in there was a sharp crack originating from the pale humanoid's ribcage.

Unfortunately this now meant the Gigas and the Handmaiden were tumbling down the stairs again... toward Akio and Chika.

Chika, who was halfway toward retrieving her sword, yelped, snatched it up, and managed to get out of the way without tripping. "Akio-san!" she said. "Get them! Kill--before they get back up--"

The two Shadows would collide with the same, now somewhat dented. side railing that the Gigas had landed against in the first place, assuming it wasn't Akio they hit first (unlike a bundle of torn labcoat fabric, it would be inadvisable for Akio to try and catch this sort of debris). The Gigas, on its last legs, hit the ground first, and head-first, and it gave one last throe before beginning to melt. The Vile Handmaiden lay in a heap beneath its legs, dazed and vulnerable.

And that bundle of torn labcoat fragment? Fortunately, they missed it. It was still laying there on the floor. Still laying there.

Still an inanimate object. Doing nothing. Because it was inanimate.

---

"Whoa, there! Keep calm!" Toru protested as Yuka ran off. Of course, she came right on back, taking his hand to lead him, but Toru had already taken off in pursuit by the time that happened. Revolver held toward the ceiling, Toru summoned his porcelain mask over the upper half of his face, and in the next moment, cast Sukukaja on himself, the better to keep up with Yuka and not stumble along the way.

When they came into view of the burning Lure, and of Aleph, Toru clicked his tongue, stopped, tugged his hand free of Yuka's, and leveled his revolver at the Shadow, stepping to the side and attempting to line up a shot. But the damned thing was flitting about so erratically that even his enhanced perception wasn't enough for that to be feasible...

---

An Agi spell to the face more than deterred the Agent; it was left flailing on the ground, beating at its own visage, blinded. Maki was clear to escape the room without incident, and she would find that she was a mere half a minute's sprint from the stairs on which Akio and Chika were faced with a now-dead Gigas and an evolved Shadow-zombie.

The Agent rolled over, removing its fedora and smothering the flames, curled up in pain, shuddering with it. It then stilled for several seconds, and then looked up at the door. The lenses of its sunglasses had now turned a deep red. It staggered to its feet. It knew that it had failed, that pursuing that policewoman was a lost cause, but something--pride, maybe--compelled it to follow anyway, and it almost did.

Almost, but then it paused. No, no, there was no time left. None for them, and none for it. The Agent had to leave, and cut its losses.

Death would be there soon...
