Yuka's Magna spell proved unnecessary, by the time she targeted it, the Maragi had burned both swarms of frightened books into small puddles of bubbling sludge on the floor. The flames proved extremely effective and were more than enough to overwhelm the already severely weakened and vulnerable Shadows. Chika's Zio spell proofed extremely effective against the startled Black Bug. It gave a low, startled shriek as the shock was enough to knock it off it's spindly legs. Akio's subsequent spell proved more than enough to slay that Shadow as well. That was the end of the immediate threat, that just left one more thing to worry about. "Serizawa? How do you feel? You don't look good." He had been poisoned after all. "I'm afraid no one can cure poison, either." In the event it got serious, she wouldn't hesitate to have them leave the ruins and summon a healer that could. "Does anyone have any experience with supernatural poisons? How long do we expect it to last? How serious can it get?" |

Chika held her hand out, frozen in the air, as she watched the Shadows die and melt away into the usual black sludge, which then dried into a powdery solid substance. She stared at the place where the Beetle had been, and then at her hand... Why would you settle for something so unsatisfying...? whispered Tisiphone, in a barely audible hiss of a whisper. Chika ignored her. She felt a strange wave of giddiness, which faded when she realized that the monsters had inflicted a lasting kind of harm after all. She turned toward Aleph, and walked slowly toward him, looking at his face. "...If it's anythin' like my magic..." she said, "...all it needs is time and it'll fade. A heal every now n' then should help, but it's not the same as an actual poison." She winced, and then said, "I'm not sure exactly how long it might last, though. Try not t' move to much in the meanwhile. Spreads it worse." Turning to look at the others, she asked, "Is everyone else alright?" ---

Thank God the Shadows were defeated, Aleph thought. When Aleph heard Maki and Chika talk about Aleph's poisoning, he was relieved to hear that it was just magic, and not actual poison. "Then, in that case, I should be fine in about a moment or two. Plus, I can heal myself." Aleph said, coughing then Dia'ing himself to keep his strength. Yuka sighed in relief. "Then, we should keep moving." Yuka said. ---

Akio's mask disappeared from his face as it became apparent that the scuffle had ended with their victory - this hadn't been so bad for a first battle after a rather long period of time without exploring the Ruins, all in all. At least his Aikido and Kendo training had kept him physically unrusted all this time. He walked closer to the rest of the group, wiping the sweat off his forehead. "I'm fine, thank you. What about you, Nakadachi-san ?" he replied, giving the girl a friendly smile and letting his bokken rest on his shoulder. He looked over to Maki, a worried expression on his face. He was more concerned about her, honestly... perhaps his own weakness to physical made him more worried about physical damage that had happened to other people. In any cases, bullet wounds were nothing to be scoffed at. |

As far as Maki knew, no one else was injured, and that seemed to confirm it. Aleph was poisoned, but it didn't seem as serious as it could have been. There was also herself to think about. She unstrapped her armor and checked exactly how bad it was. There were several small deformed peices of buckshot still stuck in the armor, intending it inwards severely. In several places within the grouping, the projectiles had penetrated completely, and though the fabric of her clothes as well. The healing had displaced them outside of her body. They were at the source of now stopped trickles of blood, and bounced harmlessly to the floor. There was still very slight evidence of bruising from sheer kinetic force and the bullet bullet wounds, but a far sight better than it could have been. "Time is not on our side. We're close enough at the entrance that waiting out the poison outside is an option, or if you feel you can endure it, we can keep going. But it'll be a mere matter of time before we're found by the Reaper. I would suggest we keep moving, and consider leaving right after. Only if you wish to go on, of course, Akira-san" That was, a calculated risk, but with two healers and knowledge the poison wouldn't be a problem forever, that was manageable, if Aleph felt it was. For her? The stab vest would have to be replaced after, but for the remainder of the trip? It seemed worthwhile to put it back on. "What do you think, Chika?" |

"I'm fine, I just don't do so well with bumps n' bruises sometimes," Chika said in answer to Akio's question, slipping Kizuna back into its sheath. When Maki spoke, turning the question to her, Chika turned to the policewoman with a furrowed brow as if surprised her opinion counted for anything. She then looked to Aleph, who was either putting up a brave front like a typical guy or was just made of sterner stuff than his whiney, temper-tantrumy personality suggested. The others were still fine, and... "If we always run for the exit whenever someone gets put at a bit of a disadvantage, we ain't never gonna make any progress in this place," she said after a few moments, and turned, moving to continue the way they had been going before the insect and book Shadows had attacked. "We should do what we can with the time we have. Even if it's just a fight or two more for our Personas t' grow from." She would, of course, relent if Maki disagreed, or if the others wanted to leave. But she assumed they wouldn't--they didn't seem too harrowed or discouraged, and as Chika's previous fights with Shadows went, this one had been one of the better ones... |

"I can keep going. Like I said, I can heal myself. And ya'll said that it should fade with time." Aleph said. As he was saying this, he was actually beginning to feel the poison effect wearing off. Thank God. Yuka nodded. "Chika-san's right. We're not gonna make much progress if we're just running for the door every time someone's been Charmed or something." Yuka stated. |

"We haven't been here for very long, in any case. We should still have some time before the Reaper shows up." Akio replied with an agreeable smile. "I don't do well with bruises or bums either, Nakadachi-san. Sadly, my combat options at the time being are too limited to rule out the need for me to get up-close with these monsters." he added, a bit regretfully - hopefully, he'd get strong enough to fulfill other roles in the future. "Indeed. But I'd rather choose negligeable progress over lasting harm any day of the week." he added, stepping behind Chika at a brisk pace. If any Shadows happened to appear, he'd be ready. |

"If the condition worsens, and if it proves to be too much of a drain on your combined healing before the curse lapses, then we'll leave, otherwise? We'll continue." It just seemed like the most logical thing to do, but Maki spoke with conviction, and with a well-practiced and authoritative voice. But good points were made to keep going rather than withdraw at once, there was no reason to argue that point. It was what they'd all come for, wasn't it? "Alright, for the time being? Let's revise the order. Yuka? You and your brother should remain in the rear until the poison's dealt with. You can more quickly respond to the ravages that way. Akio? I want you and Chika to stick with one another just behind me." She was still ahead, as usual, she re-loaded her shotgun while the opportunity presented itself, picked the direction where she'd first encountered the group of Shadows, and cautiously advanced. It was really quite lucky that Maki's chosen patrol route took her near the stairs to level two. The group didn't encounter anything of consequence after that first encounter for almost two full hallways. Indeed, as Chika walked, she was struck by the strangest sense that it was too quiet down here--too quiet, even for a place where the only background noise was usually either dripping water, a buzz from a bad ceiling light, or some calamity in the distance that screamed at one to either intervene or stay the hell away. The doors they passed all led to empty rooms, ransacked offices, lots of ruination and signs of previous pillage but no Shadows. Somehow this made Chika doubt her previous argument. Somehow it made Akio sound more right to her. It was a clicking that got Chika's attention: a clicking from behind. She stopped, and turned toward the noise, only for it to be joined by clicking from the front, as well. Then, from both directions, there came a crunching that was almost in rhythm with the clicking... "Shadows... I think--I think I know this noise," Chika whispered. "These ones, they're--" They were. The first of the four creatures, all identical, came into view from around the corner they'd just come from, a Piercing Strider. A familiar Shadow that sent a thrill of dread down Chika's spine on sight. Its appearance was simple: it was a sphere, a black orb with a red eye, and attached to it, eight silver legs, like metal lightning bolts, perfect for skewering things, cutting things up. How close she'd come to being ripped apart by this very breed of Shadow that day, trapped and bound in webbing to her own wheelchair... Another emerged ahead of the group, and then another, from behind, above the first, its feet piercing the ceiling tiles and the walls with every step, keeping it anchored above and behind its fellow. The fourth, likewise, came from the front, walking along the top-left corner of the hall. Hidden behind the wall of the office door not three yards ahead of Maki's position, a pale, hairless figure in a black trenchcoat stood with his back pressed to the wall, holding its gun carefully pointed toward the ceiling. Only the faint smell of tobacco smoke might have given it away, might have if it could be detected amidst the general scent of mold and rot that masked it in this place. It stood there, head tipped downward, waiting for its chance. Beneath the fedora it wore, the lenses of its black sunglasses blinked. The lenses blinked, and shifted from black to red. |
