Aleph and Yuka listened as they took their positions with Chika and Akio. The group had continued down into the ruins until suddenly, strange things were already happening. A beetle with a human-ish mouth and three swarms of books. Books? Probably a scary way to get kids to read. Aleph nearly panicked when Chika spoke, but he managed not to somehow goof up defending her. He quickly summoned his Persona with his mask and shot a Maragi at the beetle and books. Yuka, seeing as how her magic could only hit one thing, summoned her Persona and casted Magna on the beetle. |

Akio diligently took the position Maki asked him to hold in the group - yes, the rear, of course, where he wouldn't be vulnerable to damage coming from the front. He furrowed his brow as a skittering sound rang in the silence of the Ruins - soon enough, a bunch of book-shaped Shadows came into view, which brought him back to his second-to-last visit in this place. Well, there was no time to spend regretting ephemeral loves and other romantic brushes with death... "These things are weak to wind !" he yelled out, casting a Garu towards the group of books. At the same moment, he prepared a Sukukaja and sent a look Aleph's way - one that said, Nakadachi-san's right and you should do what she says. |

The quick flurry of spells, the Maragi and Magna had some effect on the black bug, leaving it unsteady on its strangely spindly legs. Chika's Mamudo on the other hand, seemed to pass over it without visibly perturbing the Black Bug. The Fluttering Pages, however, were not so lucky. They were softened up by the blast of entropy, and struck with an expanding plume of red hot flames, with spectacular results. Akio's Garu was more than enough to cause one of the three distinct groups of floating, fanged books to loose cohesion to splash unceremoniously upon the floor as a puddle of dissolving black tar. The remaining two suddenly burst into activity despite being nearly scorched black. One flew towards Aleph, glittering fangs dripping with venom as it attempted to attack him with a Poison Skewer spell. The other swarm of flying books flew into an odd configuration and fired an Agi towards Chika. Maki leveled her shotgun towards the injured Black Bug and fired, in a flash, a barrier was briefly seen and the projectiles were sent flying back towards Maki. She flinched to the side reflectively, but it only served to make sure the shot hit her off-center. She was knocked off her feet and stumbled backwards into the near wall. "Damn…" It seemed that it reflected physical attacks. Unfortunate Maki found that out the hard way. The Black Bug took full advantage of Maki's position. An orange glow was a tell-tale sign of a Tarukaja spell to those who were familiar with it. It snapped down its mandibles on Maki before she could recover and evade the attack. |

Fire! Chika had already started pumping the small trickle of magic she needed to make Kizuna's enchantment work; her perceptions were sharpened, even if only by half of what a true Sukukaja spell would have provided, and she saw it all. The effect of fire on the Pages, the non-effect of her dark magic on the Black Bug. Most of all, she saw the book careening toward Aleph and the fireball careening toward her. "Aleph-san, watch out!" That was her warning cry as she scrambled and dove to the right, away from Aleph, and felt the scorching heat of the Agi spell as it passed behind her lower spine, barely missing her. That she could feel the heat so strongly through her shirt might have tricked her into believing her jacket had caught fire, but having experienced that sensation firsthand so recently, she could tell the difference without thinking. Chika wasn't her friend Kyo, though--the green-haired girl would have dove into a roll and jumped back to her feet. Chika merely wiped out. She hit the ground in a skid, feeling a dull pain of impact in her left elbow and the cold slap of metal as the blunt, edgeless back of her sword came in contact with her neck. It occurred to her to think of what might have happened if the other side of her sword had done so instead... ...and then her enhanced perceptions picked up something else: the flash of gunfire ricocheting off of the Bug just before Maki took a hit and staggered back. Chika thrust out a hand, first it sparked with a building Zio spell. But the Bug had taken hold of Maki; if Chika used her magic now, she would probably shock Maki as well, and there was no guarantee that this would work. She tried to recall what Maki had said about her weaknesses and strengths... and then remembered that the policewoman hadn't told them of any. She had to make sure that The redhead's lightning spell died away, she took a deep breath... ...and blew out, as hard as she could, blasting the Black Bug with a focused, grayish-purple smog cloud. The Foul Breath settled over the monster, Chika choked back a quick inhale, and as she tried to stand, she called out: "Akio-san, Charm it! Help Yamada-san!" |

Aleph panicked as one of the books flew towards Aleph. He blocked his face with his arms, but the book seemed to have bit him hard. "Agh!" The bite didn't hurt too badly, but suddenly Aleph started to feel sick, a pain he was now feeling in the pit of his stomach. Struggling to maintain himself, Aleph casted Media on everyone, including himself, then prepared to throw a Maragi at the remaining Shadows. Meanwhile, Yuka felt the Media, but was as healthy as healthy could be. The fact that mattered now was that Aleph now looked like he had been poisoned. But she didn't know what to do now except to keep fighting. The Black Bug had gone after Maki, so Yuka threw a Magna at it, trying to distract it. Edited by TheGameFreak, Oct 18 2013, 06:19 PM.

"Hm." Akio breathed out as the Sukukaja spell went off, sharpening the world around him and making him feel like he had more than a single second's worth of thinking time every time a second flowed by. His brain registered that one of the groups of book had been eliminated by his spell, but the fact that Maki'd been injured by her own bullets took priority over any follow-up to the assault. In an instant, his mask materialized over his face, its white color and the serene expression it sported quite a contrast to the situation in which it'd been summoned; it took another instant for Icarus to appear above him, a muscular arm extended in the Beetle's direction. "On it !" the Persona's User said, a moment before a pinkish glow appeared around Icarus' arm and the Beetle - it was the first time he'd used the spell in a serious combat situation, and wasn't sure if it'd work; in any case, having such a big, burly thing on their side would be an immense tactical advantage. His heightened attention snapped back to the books - the Media didn't heal any injuries, but he felt... well, healthier than a few instants before. |

Maki definitely appreciated the healing. Between the reflected blast and the subsequent attack by the Black Bug had taken it's toll on her, there a sharp shooting pain where the buckshot managed to penetrate her armor, deep bruising where it didn't, and the Bug's mandibles had done their best to crack her ribs. All of which was alleviated in the span of a moment. The Marin Karin spell effected the insectoid shadow like a pinkish Aura over it's carapace that quickly vanished, and it acted just as they'd hopped, the Black Bug paused it's onslaught from Maki, and suddenly turned on its former allies. an Evil Smile spell left one swarm of Fluttering pages flying away, but only as far as to gracelessly slam into a wall that was directly away from the black bug, the other one seemed to paralyzed to even move. Maki was still too stunned to react properly yet, but things seemed well in hand, with the Fluttering Pages at their mercy and Black Bug at Akio's command, even if it seemed that Yuka's Magna spell had caused some visible damage to it. Oh, thank God... it worked... The Media spell helped Chika as well, even if not as drastically as it had done for Maki. She stood, the pain of her fall mostly gone, and held out a hand, trying to decide with spell to cast. It looked like Aleph was building for another Maragi spell, so... "Everyone, get back! Let Aleph kill those books--" she heard herself warn, almost as if some strange primal logic had taken control of her voice. "--and--" She looked from one Fluttering Page to the next. Both were not only entrapped by the influence of what looked like Fear magic, they were heavily damaged. Only the Black Bug seemed to stand any chance of surviving once Aleph cast his fire spell. The answer was a no-brainer, then, wasn't it? "Everyone else, focus on the beetle!" She turned her hand toward the insect monster, and despite her relative clear-headedness, she realized: this was what she came here for, inflicting pain, making these creatures suffer. She would draw it out as she always did, a low-power, steady stream, continuous pain-- What came out of her hand was a single, brief, focused blast of Zio, and what accompanied it was a thought: even if it looked like they had the enemy on the ropes, she couldn't risk this monster surviving and using fear magic on the others, or on her. She had to kill it, prevent it from doing any more harm... |

Aleph looked at the Shadows. Everyone seemed to be doing fine so far, if not for the Media. But he still felt sick, as he coughed and felt himself getting weaker, and hurting all the while. But he paid it no mind, as he summoned his Persona once more and fired a Maragi at the Shadows. Yuka watched as the status ailments hit their mark. The book swarms looked terrified and one of them ran away, while the giant bug was actually fighting for her team now. Weird. Nevertheless, Yuka summoned her Persona and casted Magna on the book swarm Shadow. |

Akio grinned under his mask as it became obvious that his Marin Karin had worked on the Beetle - it had been a succesful gamble, but he had the feeling that it was a strategy that shouldn't be used when there were other options available: surely, such an handy spell had to have its downsides, right ? He'd feel a bit uncomfortable asking people to help him experiment with its effects, since it seemed to have mind-altering effects... Yes, now that it had attacked the books, that thing needed to be put down for good, lest it turn against them once the dust would have settled - since that it'd been charmed, it wouldn't put up as much resistance as it would have uncharmed. The boy shot a Garu in the giant insect's direction, trying his best to attack in sync with Chika to make sure that his spell had good effect. At the same time, he leaped to the side - wouldn't want to take a Garu in the face if the Shadow happened to reflect wind. |
