"It's because Reina-sama made herself obvious. She never bothered to cover her malicious intents towards Ojou-sama and there was a time when things got..." Subaru looked down. "...physical. As a servant, I couldn't stop her," she said. "And Ojou-sama also noticed Reina-sama's intention, so she made the group in order to protect her and her father..."

Physical? Did he mean physical abuse? Isoroku had to press her nails against her palms to suppress her anger as she heard that.

"But it's more like she wanted to protect her father than anything..." Subaru added. "As I said before, the Kiriharas are known for their deviousness and penchant for subtle manipulation. We know that Reina-sama is always up for something," the butler said. "And she might be even willing to harm her family in order to get what she wants..." such thing disgusted her to no end. How could someone be willing to harm their family in order to gain something? There had to be a limit for one's depravity.

"You said Kinzaki had made a group of Persona-users, right?" Isoroku asked seriously. "Let me join," it sounded more like a demand than anything. "You're going to join too, right?" she asked Kyo.

"Y'bet your ass I am," Kyo said with a careless shrug. As with Isoroku, Kyo's mind had immediately jumped to physical abuse when Subaru spoke of Reina making herself obvious. Perhaps it was so easy to believe because of a certain rich, entitled young corporate heir she knew from her Osaka days...

The green-haired girl paused for a few moments, then leaned forward, frowning a bit as she held up a single index finger without unfolding her arms.

"One question, though. If this's about protectin' Kinzaki's father... does he know anythin' about this?" she asked. "This'd all go smoother if we had his cooperation, right? He ain't about t' take Kinzaki's pet bein' made inta food lyin' d--"

But then Kyo broke off, looking suddenly troubled.

"...Or, would that be bad? Y'think maybe she wants him told...?" the girl muttered, leaning back with an uncertain grimace. "...Cripes, I don't even know. Would tellin' him be a good idea or a bad idea?"

"There is a high chance that Hajime-sama might already know about this," Subaru said. "If there is anyone who knows most things about Reina-sama, it has to be him..." she said darkly. After all, both Reina and Hajime are siblings. "It's just that Ojou-sama insists to not get her father involved..." she added.

"B-but... why?" Isoroku gave Subaru a quizzical look. "Wouldn't that be easier for us, then?"

"Yes, but it will be harder for them..." Subaru responded. "Like I said before, subtle manipulation is like a second nature for the Kiriharas. In fact, if there are two Kiriharas having a dispute against each other, the one who uses a direct approach has a high chance to get backstabbed whenever they're not looking..." Subaru said seriously. "So, they have to manipulate their way to success in order to win."

"..." Isoroku was stunned. She had no idea how screwed-up Kinzaki's family was.

"And... I have a feeling that Hajime-sama may have planned something without us knowing it..." Subaru said. "So, all we have to do now is to let Hajime-sama do his part while we do ours. Since Reina-sama has already made her declaration of war, we need to be prepared..." she said.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Kyo protested, unfolding her arms and leaning forward again. She had frowned when the matter of using the direct approach being bad was brought up, but when the possibility of Hajime having his own plan was raised, she started to speak in a confused way, gesturing wildly with her hands as she did. "Don't that mean we should at least talk t' him about what he's got planned? He might do somethin' on his own that we wouldn't know how t' react to if we don't know about it beforehand, and--wouldn't that also risk y'know, crossin' the streams? Our plans gettin' tangled up in a bad way and givin' Reina the advantage?"

Kyo slowed down, then put a hand over her eyes for a moment to calm herself.

"Or are y'worried he'd lose his head if he knew about what she did with Napoleon, specifically?" she asked. "Y'think maybe her real goal with this was t' piss off her dad, not her?"

It was all enough to make her head spin, aristocratic family members plotting against their aristocratic family members like something out of a stupid historical drama. Kyo could feel a headache building, so she brought her fingers up to her temples, starting to massage little circles there.

"It would be nice if Hajime-sama can cooperate with us," Subaru said, nodding. "But he may have his own reason if he doesn't want to share his plan with us. Out of all people, he's probably the one who's worried the most about Ojou-sama," she told the girls. Since Kinzaki was his only child, he just couldn't help it.

"And yes, she probably wants him to get angry too to cause confusion," Subaru continued. "To make him reckless so she can catch him off-guard and proceed with her plan."

Isoroku didn't like this. It sounded like they were the ones who got their back pressed against the wall by Reina. From what Subaru had told them, it looked like Reina was the one with upper hand right now.

"So, all we can do now is to have faith in Hajime-sama," Subaru said, smiling. "He is a clever man. You don't have to worry about him..."

The have faith in Hajime line sort of reminded Kyo of one episode of Shingeki no Kyojin, in which Eren's teammates convinced him in rather inspiring fashion to have faith in them and let them fight the Female Titan... resulting in all of those teammates being swiftly and brutally slaughtered when Eren did exactly that. It had been a wee bit of a mood whiplash. Awesome when fictional. Made Kyo feel a bit sick when she considered it becoming reality.

"How, exactly, would Reina backstab Hajime if he slipped up?" Kyo asked tentatively. "Surely she wouldn't up and up murder him, right? ...W-Wouldn't that look a wee bit suspicious?"

Kyo could report this to Shin and that might provide a basis for investigation in that eventuality, but making sure a crime could be accurately investigated after it was committed wasn't much of a preventative measure. And the last thing Kyo wanted to think about was--was--was Kinzaki's father being cooked into a stew and fed to her next, and now that she'd thought about it Kyo had the wild idea that somewhere out there in the world, someone would be that cruel, even if it was pointlessly and gratuitously evil.

"Can't we do nothin' t' make sure she can't backstab 'im?" she asked a moment later in a somewhat feeble voice. "Faith's one thing, but there's gotta be more than that we can do."

Subaru shook her head. "Unfortunately, I don't know. We have no idea what Reina-sama will do behind our backs. If only we can monitor her every movements," then, she sighed. "And as a matter of fact, I believe she has several spies or informers among the servants here. That will make things more difficult to plan things and to do spying on her..." she said. She didn't know who the spies were among the servants, but rather than wasting time searching for the spies, they needed to deal with Reina first.

"Or perhaps we can send our own spy to monitor her movement..." Subaru said. "That way, we will be able to learn more about what she may be planning..."

Guh, spies and informants. Of course. Fucking familial espionage. Naturally. This was exactly like some stupid historical drama. Kyo continued to massage little circles around her temples.

"If you're lookin' t' send in a spy, who wouldja send?" she asked. "Got anyone in mind? 'Cause establishin' that sorta thing's gotta be difficult, right?"

She closed her eyes.

"O' course, if we're operatin' under the assumption that there's a spy or two here, we could always try t' use that. Plant some bad info, lay a trap, y'know."

Subaru answered to Kyo's question by shaking her head. "We don't know yet. It is a little hard to decide what kind of person we need to send..." and then, she nodded when she heard Kyo's suggestion about giving false info to Reina's spies. "And I will put that into consideration. This is going to be hard, but we will try to do that..." she said with a smile.

"And I... I wish I can get stronger too..." Subaru said with soft voice. She looked down with crestfallen look. "It is supposed to be my duty to protect Ojou-sama and the Kirihara family, and yet... I don't have enough power to do so..." she sighed heavily. "I am a failure as a butler..."

"N-no, don't say that!" Isoroku said to Subaru. "Uh... S-Suzuhara-san, please do not worry. This is not your duty alone," she smiled gently to the ginger-haired butler. "As Kinzaki's friend, I will do anything to help her. You can count on me for that..." she said, showing a confident smile.

"...Thank you," Subaru also smiled after hearing that from Isoroku. "No wonder Ojou-sama likes you, Mayoi-san."

"S-she... she's what?" Isoroku was surprised and confused.

"She says that you really are a kind person..." Subaru said. "And... thank you for being her friend, Mayoi-san," she bowed slightly to the part-time model. Isoroku blushed when she heard that.

Kyo watched the two quietly, and couldn't help a slight grin when Isoroku got all bashful. Still, it was probably a good idea to divert some attention away from that so her friend could compose herself.

"Well, if y'need t' get stronger as a user, I'm always up for a little ruins-divin'," Kyo said to Subaru, shrugging. "And we can all get t'gether, make all friendly-like, and then when the shit hits the fan channel all o' that friendship into one big, atomic blast o' friendship-powered magic--ha, that'd give Reina somethin' t' think about."

The green-haired girl's grin faded, then, into a thoughtful frown. It was the first time she'd considered--even in jest--actively trying to use friendship to increase the power of their magic capabilities. Could that even work? For that matter, if you were just trying to be friends with people to increase your power, would that even count as real enough friendship to even make a Fusion Spell go?

...That was a thing. Kyo made a note to give it a think when she was alone, and not so distracted by Kinzaki's plight.

"Say," she said, scratching her chin curiously. "Um. Well. Don't say if it's private, but, but I'm wonderin'. Did Kinzaki ever say anythin' about me?" Then, realizing she might be misunderstood, she quickly raised her hands in a defensive gesture. "I-I just mean, sometimes I worry that I weird her out with my like, my foul mouth and... and stuff."

And maybe that interview, too. What's she think of me after that...?

It was a thought that had occurred to Kyo more and more often about more and more of her friends with every passing day since her Moksa interview had come up. And every time one of them decided to be understanding, Kyo couldn't help feeling... uncomfortable. Like she didn't deserve it.

Because she was pretty sure she didn't. She was glad to have it, but... what had she ever done that she should be one of the ones among all the idiots in Nagashima to have made so many great friends?
