"I'm a badass, so being idiotic is in the description!"

Charles blocked the Bash with his forearms and scrambled over to the Shadow after it flew off of him, staying low and getting on one knee behind the Doll as it stood up.

"Idiotic is exemplified in this next point here."

Charles raised himself off his knee and gripped the Shadow around the waist, suplexing it onto the concrete head and neck first.

"Yeah, we know our shit. Me especially though. Shane's kind of a butthead."

Naturally, the Lost Innocence's head cracked like an egg. Within seconds, the entire thing began to melt into black Shadow-goop, which in turn dried up and began to flake away.

Shane's eye twitched just slightly at being called a butthead. It wouldn't do to make a scene in front of a cute girl, though, never mind that the ruins were a poor place for "a scene" of any kind. The blue-haired boy let it slide and stepped further into the room, putting his sword away and then stuffing his hands in his pockets. "You don't need to answer it out loud for it to hear you," he said helpfully. "It's in your head, so I'd advice against verbal conversation once we're out. Speaking of this: this is an underground, abandoned laboratory full of monsters, so we should probably leave now. Question and answer can happen when we're outside whatever invisible 'do not cross' line keeps the Shadows in the lab."

The boy turned, jerked his head toward the door, and began to walk, calmly, back toward the entrance.

Miyo watched with awe as Charles suplexed the doll, though the look turned to slight disgust as she watched the doll disappear in black goopiness.

"Charles-san, I'm sure Shane-san is as skilled as you are with this... Fighting magic." It was then she realised that she didn't know the right word for the spells. She put it at the back of her mind; it wasn't the most important thing right now.

Miyo turned to Shane and smiled shyly. "Ah, right, that would make sense wouldn't it? Thanks for telling me Shane-san..."

Why didn't you tell me this?

Sorry dear, it must've slipped my mind!

Your mind's my mind!... This is confusing.

You'll learn not to question such things, don't worry~

An underground laboratory? Monsters? How the heck did such a place exist in the world, let alone in Nagashima? Why were Shane and Charles in this place? Where the heck did Charles even come from? Miyo wanted to ask so many questions, but instead she followed Shane's instructions, kept quiet and headed out the room, keeping a close distance to him. She couldn't see well in the darkness so she reached out to grab his arm but quickly stopped, realising how awkward that might turn, and instead just followed his dark outline. She trusted that the two boys knew the way out.

Charles spun around and kicked off a wall, somersaulting clumsily back onto his feet. He didn't regain his balance and fell into the cart. So much for looking cool.

"He's skilled enough, yes. He's just a butt. But yeah. Let's walk on outta here before we get jumped."

He pushed off the wall and rode the cart out the door.

"Let's get to the exit!"

Shane quirked and amused eyebrow in Charles's direction at the spectacular wipe-out, and then shrugged. "Well," he said lightly, stepping aside so Charles could preceed him out the exit--it would be easier if the cart-riding madman alerted them to any lurking Shadows before they had a chance to get near Miyo, after all. "I'm not trying to impress you, but if I'm a butt at least I'm a butt the ladies like. In here my butt doesn't much matter, though. Unless a sheep throws a pillow at you, I guess."

The blue-haired boy dreaded that possibility like nothing else, but not for the reasons most would assume: if he was deprived of his clothing, that meant when he found it, he would have to put it back on. And getting his various buckles and things fixed up right was a bit of an ordeal, one he seriously didn't want to have to deal with when the Reaper clock was a-ticking.

The blue-haired boy stepped out into the hallway, beckoning Miyo to follow.

"Let's get you out of here, and then we can explain all the shit you need to know," he said. "Spoiler alert: this is a lot more common in this town than you'd think."

Miyo stifled a giggle at Charles' failure, but smiled nonetheless as she watched him cart out the room.

"Even though he's an idiot, he's still pretty awesome. He's normally like this, I take it?"

Miyo glanced at Shane and decided not to comment on her opinion of him, because in all honesty it would be embarrassing. The "sheep throwing a pillow at you" thing confused her though. She'd have to ask when they were out.

Miyo quickly walked up to Shane and gave a quick nod. "Lead the way then, Shane-san. And, um... T-thank you for saving me." She glanced down at the floor, making up an excuse in her mind that she was interested in his leather boots (which she still considered pretty cool from her first encounter with him), and fidgeted with her fringe nervously. She wasn't quite sure how to act in this kind of situation; she was more used to saving damsels in distress in her games rather than being one. Curse her social awkwardness.

"I hear a stutter! I detect a shrinking violet"

Charles stood up once the cart stopped moving and stood on the top of the cart, using it as a skateboard instead.

"Yes, I am normally like this though. Every person I rescue is treated to a grand spectacle."

"Add a second girl to the shy person rescue counter. Cha-ching!"

The lefthand corner of Shane's lips quirked up a bit at the word idiot, but let the remark pass without comment. He watched Charles stand up on the cart, and moved to follow. He shrugged a bit when Miyo gave her thank-you, and said, "Well, he did all the saving this time. Somehow I get the feeling he was here by coincidence, though. Some of us patrol this place to people like you, caught and lured down here by that butterfly. That's what I'm doing. I don't imagine it's very effect if you do that while rolling around on a paper cart, and it'd be a shame if a Shadow jumped at you while you were rolling around, too, so it miiiiight not be the smartest--"

That was about the moment Charles and the cart neared the first corner they would need to turn on the way to the exit. That was also about the point when two Calm Pesces--creatures that looked like floating scrolls arranged in a fish-like shape--shot around that corner and rocketed toward the group... one straight at Charles from almost point-blank range.

Shane's response to the threat was almost instantaneous, although he also had a few more yards between himself and his own target for a reaction-cushion: as the second Pesce flew past Charles and straight toward Shane, the blue-haired boy snapped the fingers of his left hand, casting a Quicksilver on himself, as his right hand shot up to grip the hilt of his sword. The blade slid free of the sheath just in time: as the film-negative discoloring effect of the agility enhancement flickered away, leaving his perceptions and reflexes sharpened, Shane swung the bastard sword down across the Pesce's path one-handed, batting the Shadow away.

Or more specifically, to the side. His blade cut and tore a visible slash in the flying fish-monster's papery hide and it was shunted to the left... but it kept on moving, moving past him and straight for Miyo. Shane swore, turning to follow, extending a hand to cast a Summoned Sword, but he hesitated--he didn't want to hit the person he was here to save.

"Head's up!" he snapped, just before the Pesce came to a stop and swung around, attempting to smack Miyo with its "tail."

"Shrinking violet? I'm not a..." Miyo stopped and thought for a moment, then decided not to finish her comment.

She watched Charles start to skateboard on the cart and smiled. "I'm willing to bet it's always grand spectacle with you; it's pretty brave of you to be this crazy in here, I suppose," she said with a giggle.

"Now that's not true Shane-san, you're not giving yourself enough credit. You were the one who heard me when I woke up, and told me to keep talking so you could find me. That was very helpful to me, and I suspect it was helpful to Charles-san too. I'm very thankful to both of you." She smiled brightly at Shane, hoping to get some sort of positive reaction from him.

She listened to Shane explain his reason for being there and his assumptions on Charles' reason, but when she saw the Calm Pesces she froze in her tracks. They weren't as scary-looking as the doll from earlier, but animate scrolls still had some kind of fear factor to them.

"Watch out Charles-san!" Miyo exclaimed, staying put regardless of the other Shadow coming towards her and Shane.

What are you doing, Miyo?!

Shane-san'll deal with it, just watch.

Miyo and Komodia watched as Shane turned an odd colour, then hit the Pesce away faster than what Miyo considered possible.

See? Told you.

You clearly can't see dear. It's coming right towards you!

What are you-

Miyo heard Shane's warning just a little too late: the Pesce smacked her hard enough to cause her to stagger back and leave a stinging pain, but thankfully not enough lose her balance or cause serious injury.

"Ow... And I thought scrolls could just give you papercuts. Heh..."

Miyo quickly decided that now was not the time to lighten the mood and instead aimed another Zio at the Pesce. It looked like a fish, so going by logic, it should be weak to electricity, right?

Dear, it's wonderful that you're trying to fight, but I'm sorry to say nothing about that fish is even remotely related to water. It's made of paper after all.

Dang it.

"Shane my boy, I've ridden polar bears around the ruins patrolling, what does a cart mean to me?" asked the boy. And then the scroll rushed at him. This was obviously one of his more comedic ruins runs, only stopping short of his encounter with the Box Ghost.

"Scrolls? Let's rock, baby."

Charles pulled a pen out from his jacket pocket and cast Masukukaja on himself and the others. A smile came across his face, making his mask feel tighter around his cheeks. This was going to be a fun cakewalk, at least. Good way to get back in the swing of things.

"Here's an autograph!"

He hopped off the cart and leapt at the Pesce, aiming to stab it with a Mighty Swing-infused pen jab.
