With Suzu's analytic ability to guide them, they found the group of shadows in a large office area of the sort that was commonly divided into cubicles lit by an intermittently strobing bank of fluorescent lights. Many of the dividers had fallen over, but here and there one still stood, providing cover. Suzu, Kazue, and Maki entered the room behind one of these dividers, giving them a chance to survey the scene from cover before attacking.

The two different types of shadow appeared to be bickering over something on the ground that looked like a small mound from where the three women were. The hands had surrounded it, but the two larger shadows -- the Shrieking Eagles -- were hissing and posturing as if they desired whatever it was that the Groping Hands had found.

Kazue recognized the Hands, but the Eagles were newer and larger enemies than she had remembered facing. Other than that time with Subaru -- those shadows had been large and unpleasant but not quite so absurd as the Eagles.

She reached out and summoned her mask: she was preparing to try her new spell on the Groping Hands.

By the numbers the hands were the ones that were weak to physical. She best equipped to deal with the hands, in that case. "Mind your ears."

After her warning, Maki fired at the nearest of the hands. She held firmly at the gun as the recoil caused it to jump up and back. She expelled the spent shell and prepared for a second shot. It was good to gain their attention early on, it allowed the others to act freely for a bit, without a fear of retaliation.

She made sure that she had enough maneuvering room as she advanced into the room, no doubt their previous argument was going to be forgotten for the sake of the new, external threat.

Despite the warning, Suzu still winced as the gunshot rang out, giving her the same ear buzzing as before. Nonetheless it was no time for slacking around!

For Kazue's sake, she decided to distract the Shrieking Eagles while the other two dispatched the Groping Hands. Taking advantage of the confusion such a loud noise would probably cause, Suzu summoned her mask to her face, and launched an Aqua in the Eagles' way to catch their attention.

The scattergun blast turned one of the hands into a spray of black goo immediately. The shadows all whirled in the direction of the attack and one eagle took a hit from Suzu's aqua before it had a chance to respond. It was slightly slowed down by the hit but was still very much in the fight.

There were four shadows remaining: two eagles and two hands.

One of the hands fired a bufu at the group, and one of the eagles fired a garu: both seemed to be aiming for Maki, who was the greatest danger. The other eagle -- the one Suzu had hit -- used cleave: it swung one of its blade-like wings down into the flimsy cover in an attempt to deny them safety.

While this was going on Kazue hunkered down, trying to remain out of the wind attack. She only barely saw the groping hand before it used its signature attack on her: it splayed out all of its fingers and leaped toward her. She raised her knife just as it smashed into her and began to squeeze. She worked the blade into it and began to cut. After a second it made a deflated noise and began to turn into black goo.

Maki's reaction was immediate, she cast Sukukaja upon herself in hopes of helping her to escape the retribution from the two Shadows. Everything quickly slowed down beyond the curtain of green, including the incoming spells.

She ducked down and darted to the side, taking great pains to not be where they were aiming at when the spells all harmlessly hit the wall behind where she was. Sadly the burst of speed meant she wouldn't be able to fire back, at least until she was acclimated it to it to a point as to not risk friendly fire.

Suzu quickly scrambled out of cover to dodge the Cleave, having no options of self defense. That left her very open...

...if not the fact that the Shadows seemed to be focusing on everyone else but her.

Of course, such would certainly be taken advantage of. Suzu quickly rushed at the slowed Eagle, aiming to slam her weapon across its head. As she charged, she took the opportunity to target the other one with an Aqua as well, so to keep the wind spell foes away from Kazue as much as possible.

Suzu fully expected to get some battle wounds out of that one, but it would be worth the effort.

The aqua slammed into one eagle a split-second after the other took the hit from the baseball bat. Both were still up, but looked heavily damaged at this point. Just as Suzu finished the arc of her swing, though, she was attacked from behind: the last Groping Hand rose up, splayed its fingers, and attempted to squish her against the ground, using its poorly-named "grope" attack.

Kazue looked up at the eagle Suzu had hit with aqua. Water was still streaming down its beak and from its giant, sword-like arms -- Why didn't it have wings? Why swords? -- and her eyes widened. She reflexively lashed out with magna toward it, just as it launched a garu down at her. She was tossed by the spell, tumbling away out of control. She landed once on her shoulder and then went into a roll, eventually hitting the wall, the breath knocked out of her.

Thankfully, though, the magna had had the desired effect, pulling the Shrieking Eagle down and popping it like a lanced boil. The shadow's black, tarry remains splattered against the ceiling.

The remaining Eagle pulled back one wing and brought it down toward Suzu. The attack would also hit the hand, but the shadows had apparently been squabbling about ownership of the corpse that they had found.

Even if she was endowed with a bit of celerity from her Sukukaja spell, it didn't mean she was fast enough to preempt either Shadow from attacking Suzu. The hand? It was entangled with Suzu, for the same reason the Eagle didn't care also meant Maki couldn't fire at it: To attack one of them was to attack both.

The final Shrieking Eagle, however? At just the right angle, and with the extra time to line up the shot just right? She hoped to finish it off with a single blast from her gun.

The body would…well, Maki hopped to at least get it out of the ruins, perhaps hope for a chance of close to just one more missing persons case. Failing that to give that unfortunate soul something resembling a respectful final resting place where Shadows wouldn't apparently argue over what to do with their remains.

Suzu's scanning ability made it easy to sense the Groping Hand's movement from behind; in an instant, Suzu had spun around, her bat following in suit at full momentum in the direction of the attacking Shadow - the goal was to strike before getting hit. It was so fast that she almost lost her footing, which, regardless if it hit or not, would put her in quite the disadvantageous position.

Of course, she didn't have enough time to dodge the Eagle's attack at all - she was violently slammed against the groping hand, and due to the previous loss of footing, she tumbled to the ground messily a good three meters away from her original location.

She tried to stand up as soon as she regained her senses, casting a Dia upon herself. These were tough... But at least they served for good combat experience...

Suzu's swing took the groping hand out easil: it met almost no resistance due to the shadow's weakness to physical damage. Likewise, the Eagle broke apart from the shotgun blast and in to a spray of aerosolized shadow-stuff.

Kazue sighed. The fight had been brief but fairly brutal. They had won and now had something to deal with. She wasn't quite sure that constituted a real victory: more of a headache. Though perhaps the responsible adult they had brought along would be able to suggest something.

The body on the ground was a young man: late high school or early college-aged. He was dressed in jeans and a button-down, his clothes looking dirty and several large, angry-looking bruises on his head and forearms. He looked as if he had been abducted from a home -- he had on only one sock, and no shoes -- and then slapped to death by a giant. Next to him sat a backpack.

"What do we do about him?" she asked.
