Chika did not seem even remotely reassured by Ayane's words. If anything, she looked bitter--not bitter toward Ayane, but bitter about the truth. She nodded quietly. "He... mighta had other worries. He seemed t' be havin' some sorta problem when I got there, before he even knew it was me. A headache, maybe."

A headache. Yes, she remembered him pressing his forehead against the lockers. She'd momentarily forgotten about it because that was when she realized he'd been trying to get into her locker... a mistake, of course. A simple mistake. He'd forgotten which one was his own locker, and only remembered his combination, so he'd been trying it on each one, one after another...

It was as Chika thought about this, thought about it in silence, that jogging footsteps could be heard outside the room, and then there was a quiet clamor at the still-open door.

"Oi, sis! I brought some sandwiches and soda and snuck 'em past the guys downstairs! Thought ya could use somethin' that wasn't shitty bland h... hospital... food..."

For at that moment Chika's head turned, and the redhead saw the girl who'd stumbled to a halt in the doorway. Green hair, falling in a curtain over her left eye. A plastic bag with a pair of wrapped-up, foot-long sandwiches and a few bottles of soda, dangling from one elbow. Green eyes, widening in surprise.

"...Kyo..." murmured Chika, staring at the other girl, who remained frozen, silent, in the doorway.

Ayane nodded. "Richi-kun's always had headaches and always forgets stuff, so don't take it personally, okay?" She was desperate to try and get Chika's hopes up. But not knowing anything and at the same time knowing everything proved to be its own curse. "I'm sure he's just scared. Richi-kun doesn't have many friends..."

As she heard another voice she froze herself. This was not a situation she was hoping for. It was all starting to get a little muddled. "...Hi.... Ky-chan..." She smiled, then shook her head. "Thanks for stopping by! Food! I haven't had something since Ran-kun came by earlier and dropped off the fruit, then peeled it for me."

She looked at the two. "...I should have mentioned... I'm sorry." She went quiet, idly picking at a piece of her hospital bed cover, her eyes focused on her task. "I thought I could..." Her voice trailed off before she could even finish the sentence.

Chika blinked at Kyo, her face utterly and completely flat. Kyo stared, standing stiff as a board in the doorway.

In the end it was Chika who broke the silence.

"So ya do know her... 'sis,' huh..." she murmured. "So the mentor person she mentioned on Bedlam was..."

Chika trailed off, a pained look coming over her face. Then there was a whirr and a swiveling of wheels on linoleum; Chika reached over and tilted the control stick, backing away from the bedstand, and then steering toward the door.

"...Well, I don't wanna get in the way, so... I'll be goin' now. I'm glad you're okay, Ayane-san, and... Kyo, just take care o' yourself."

Kyo, her expression stricken, obediently moved aside and out of the doorway without saying anything, and Chika directed her chair through it. She stopped on the way out, though, and spoke:

"Kyo... thanks for helpin' Nat. I'm grateful. I am."

And then she was moving again. She disappeared past the edge of the doorway and soon the sound of wheels and motor faded. Kyo gulped down a mouthful of air, her tongue painfully dry, and slowly slid the door shut again.

"W-Well, um--" she said. "I--well, that is--"

The green-haired girl remained by the door, her back pressed against it. The expression on her face might have been appropriate if she'd just been punched in the gut out of nowhere. And this wasn't even one of their training sessions, either.

Ayane was silent throughout the entire exchange. Once Chika left, she looked up at Kyo. "We met... a little while ago. I've been talking with her when I see her. We're not... we're not so different. I know the pain she went though. I thought I could help her, but I should have told you." She felt constricted, more so than how she had felt beforehand.

She laughed bitterly. "Some Sis I am, right?" Shaking her head she looked back at Kyo. "Either way its good to see you. Ran-kun worried about me like... nonstop. Can you believe this? He climbed up the side of the hospital, as soon as he worked out where I was." She sighed a little in contentment. "I've never had someone like that."

She was trying to push the subject onwards. Kyo looked like she was completely paralyzed by meeting Chika and the girl had no idea just how hard she could have been hit. So she kept talking, hoping it would rouse her.

Ayane didn't just know Chika, she'd been talking with her and--?!

"...I wish you'd've said somethin'," she muttered, seeming to have missed the part about Ran climbing in through the hospital window completely. "I--found out she was here, from Natsumi. She, um, there was this kidnapping thing with Yakuza and her friend Eri bein' taken hostage and--oh, jeez..."

Kyo was too out of sorts to articulate anything properly, she realized. Walking over to the bed, she set the bag of food down, pulled up the chair that was set off to the side, and plopped herself down. Closing her eyes, she slapped her face lightly with both hands as if to knock her thoughts back into order.

"...I been meanin' t' talk t' ya about this," she said evenly. "I wasn't about t' bring it up here, though. Sorry, that was just--I didn't expect t' run inta her here."

A pause. Then, reaching for the bag of food:

"...Climbed in through the window, eh? Ha! Did he bring a guitar along, sing ya a song? Ken did that once, as a joke, when my parents were out. Climbed up the tree and inta my room. Heheheh..."

The laughing sounded about as forced as it was. Kyo handed a sandwich and a bottle of cola to Ayane--they were buffalo chicken cheese steaks, by the way. She obviously wanted to move past the awkwardness as much as Chika did, but there was obvious strain there, and a moment later, the expression faded.

"...So what happened?" she asked quietly. "I know ya aren't one t' just get into accidents at the drop of a dime, and... that bike's important to ya, ain't it? Did it survive the crash?"

Ayane went silent. "...Sorry." She didn't deserve to say anything. She should have mentioned it to Kyo, she shouldn't have tried to do it all by herself. "I thought I could have done something, guess not huh?" She shrugged her shoulders, biting her lip in pain. "Ow... that hurts."

She shook her head. "Nah, he brought me fruit though... and an Avacado. I like Avacados though, so that's okay." She chuckled. "You know what else I like? Eggs. Whole." She opened her mouth wide, before closing it into a grin. "It tastes better that way."

She took the food and smiled. "Thanks sis! I wouldn't want to be stuck eating hospital food." She took a bite of the sandwich and nodded in approval. She looked at her wounds and nodded. "The bike survived. I'll have to take a look at it, when I get better." Turning her eyes to Kyo she chewed over her food before swallowing. "Its basically the last thing I have from my dad." She winced as she naturally tried to use her other arm.

She paused for another moment. "My shadow caught me off guard, and I crashed." She said it plainly, to cut the air with it.

Kyo's eyes widened. Her Shadow had--oh God. Kyo knew what it was like to be blindsided by her Shadow in a critical situation (hers had appeared once during a really sort of delicate hostage situation), but she couldn't quite imagine trying not to let it get to her while riding a motorcycle or driving a car. Wincing in sympathy, Kyo shook her head.

"...Don't worry about Chika," she said quietly. "I'm just glad she's got people lookin' out for her. Just... keep doin' that. I wanna think she can get better. It's--it's really worryin' knowin' she's got a Persona, though. I keep thinkin' somethin' bad's gonna happen one o' these days."

Kyo snickered at the egg joke. How very snakelike. Sometimes Kyo couldn't tell just how many of Ayane's little quirks were deliberate plays on her snake fixation and how many were just honestly things she liked or did. Or how many were both at once. "Well," she said, "we'll get your dad's bike fixed once you're outta here. Just promise ya won't let your Shadow get to ya like that on the road again, yeah?" Her voice shook a bit as she made this request. "Pull over or somethin', if ya gotta..."

Ayane shook her head. "She's like I was, angry inside. Wanting to cause pain. You could say I'm still like that somewhere deep down." She closed her eyes, trying to focus her thoughts. "I owe you both an apology, I guess. I see you as my sister, we've agreed on that, but I see Chika as what I used to be. I used to be in that position."

Hearing the chuckle she opened her eyes again. "Its super healthy for you, you know!" She took a bite of her sandwich and sighed. "I was gonna fix it myself, Hitomi bike, has to be fixed by a Hitomi mechanic." She looked around the room, as if looking for the shadow in question and nodded.

"It wasn't the usual stuff either." She checked to see if anyone was around before lowering her voice. "I went to the lookout to get some stuff into perspective and she turned up there. Told me that I like having my parents dead. That my old life was boring. That with them dead I get to be the mourning heroine, chasing my parents killers."

She went even quieter. "The sad thing is... I think she's right."

"...I think everyone's a little like that, deep down," Kyo said quietly. "Wantin' t' hurt somethin' t' make it feel like you're puttin' it all someplace other than you, wantin' t' feel less powerless, wantin' their life t'... mean somethin'. Even if that somethin' ain't a pleasant somethin'."

The green-haired girl couldn't help but fidget a bit, suddenly finding it easier to look out the window.

"M-my Shadow told me I was disappointed," she said hesitantly. "Wh-when Isoroku got over her revenge thing without me needin' t' fight her or do anything. Said I was disappointed she didn't need me. And that I was happy she needed me t' help her get over it when she fell apart after. I--"

Kyo's hands worked feverishly to unwrap her own sandwich as she spoke.

"I'm not really that selfish, am I?" she asked, almost pleadingly. She was still staring out the window at one of the drifting clouds. It had a vaguely bat-like shape. "I--I'm not still that selfish? Am I?"

Ayane nodded. "That's how I feel.. deep down. I want to hurt people, bad people, so that I know I'm strong, I want to be stronger so I feel better. I protect people because it makes me feel like I'm stronger." She sighed. "It's always about making me feel stronger, better. It always has been. Realising it... it hurts."

The snakegirl scratched at her chin. "Are you? I don't know you all that well Ky-chan. I know that you used to sleep around for fun and you stopped doing that and I know you have a lot of friends, but are you selfish?" Ayane closed her eyes for a moment before opening them. "Its a question I can't answer. The only person who can, is you."
