"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Chika Nakadachi saw the thread on Bedlam, naturally. And naturally, she'd been beside herself with panic for several long moments before her brain had fully processed that Ayane was alive, and that she would recover. After that she managed to calm herself. Nevertheless, there was only one reason she didn't arrive at the very crack of visiting hours and that was simply that wheelchairs made it difficult to get around, motorized or not.

She caught a bus from home to the hospital and when she got out of the elevator on Ayane's floor, she wheeled on over to the room and leaned forward, gritting her teeth against the discomfort, to open the door.

"Ayane-san," she sighed as she leaned back into her seat. "...Hey. I heard about the accident on Bedlam, I--just... wanted t' see how ya were doin'."

The girl pushed the control stick and with a quiet whir the chair wheeled itself into the room. She didn't stop to close the door, as much as she wanted to; privacy was nice, but she was too concerned about her friend to waste the time it would take to turn her chair around and lean over to slide the door closed again. Instead, she drove right up to the side of the woman's bed, bland expression tinted with worry. Her eyes flitted from one limb to the next. Both legs and an arm... the same as herself...

WHERE THE FUCK IS MARIO
Ayane had managed to secure one thing she could do with one hand that made her feel better. It was something she was already good at and something that whenever she was alone, was a lot more fun. Of course, she was worried other people might think she was wrong for enjoying such a thing, but they were just prudes.

Ayane was playing with a cup and ball.

She put the object in question down on her lap as she noticed Chika arriving. "...Chika-san. Not much of a 'hero' now, am I?" She gave a weak chuckle, but her eyes constantly darted around the room, much like a serpent in a cage. It became quickly apparent that Ayane didn't like being in hospitals, more so when she was unable to move.

She sighed. "I'm sorry, for before, I was out of line."

Chika shook her head sharply, and then ducked it, unwilling to look the woman in the eye just then. "No, no, that's--I shouldn't have shouted atcha..." she said quietly. "You'd just saved my life, and I was--it's just--I was ready t' die if I had to and then suddenly I didn't hafta and I just couldn't--wrap my brain around it--and--"

The girl's hand curled up into a fist on her knee, and she forced herself to look up, at Ayane.

"I'm sorry," she said tonelessly. "And I didn't say it before, so... thanks."

Ayane smiled back at Chika. "Its alright. I'm not mad or anything. You're welcome. You're my friend after all Chika-san. I would have done it regardless though." She fidgeted with her free hand, her emerald eyes still darting around. She was clearly nervous. She finally calmed herself down by taking a few breaths, reaching her free hand to her fruit bowl and failing.

"Dammit. Just a little closer..." It was clear without her appendages she so loved, Ayane was not aware just how long her arms could actually reach. Her hand was a strange pale color compared to the woman's tanned arms, showing just how attached she really was to her gloves. "I hate to be a bother Chika-san, but can you pass me an apple?"

"'Course," Chika said, a slight frown of understanding coming over her face. She swiveled the chair and rolled it closer to where the fruit bowl was set, turning it to face the bedstand rather than the bed so she could reach it with her good arm. A moment later she'd picked up and apple and held it out to Ayane.

"It's frustratin', bein' stuck like this," she said quietly. "The other day I found Isoroku-san's boyfriend hangin' by a rope from a tree. All he needed was someone t' pick up his sword so he could cut himself loose. I couldn't even bend low enough t' do that, had t' call Isoroku-san over t' help him out of it." She winced. "And then there's--well. People are cruel and wheelchairs make ya vulnerable. I'm just glad Ran-san found me, or--"

Chika took a breath and shook her head. She realized that Ayane would probably need an explanation for that one...

"I was drugged. Knocked out. Then someone rolled me out t' the backstreets, stole my phone, and broke off the control stick..." Chika said quietly, pointing to the control stick in question--which on closer inspection, didn't match the color or texture of the armrest all the way. It seemed to be a spare part that had been attached recently--which was exactly what it was. "I was stuck there. Ran-san found me, though, and wheeled me back home. I just don't understand why people do these things t' people, though." Or why it always has to be me and the people I care about who get hurt by it...

She nodded. "Thanks~" Plucking the apple from her hand, she took a bite into it, her eye drawn to the black tattoo winding around her arm. She swallowed the piece of apple and turned her arm in the air a few times, while listening to Chika. "...Kakeru...-san? He was hanging from a tree?" She bit her lip slightly.

Ran's name however, roused her from her mood. "Oh! Ran-kun? I'll have to tell him he did a good deed then." Then she went silent and there was a small amount of anger building up, visible in the slight shaking of her green eyes and the clenching of the apple in her free hand. "People are always going to be assholes. But its good to hear you're okay. Better to hear that Ran-kun helped you out." Her small amount of residual anger vanished, replaced with a smile.

"He's... kind of... we're kind of... dating? I mean... we've been doing it for a while but... only now did he say you know... those words.." She kept avoiding Chika's gaze for a few moments before finally coming out with it.

"He's kind of my boyfriend." She shook her head. "People do these things because they can. Specially in the backstreets, where its the law of the jungle. The strong survive and the weak perish and all that crap." She put the apple in her lap and clenched her hand a few times. "Important thing is you're okay now." She bit her lip again.

"I wish I could do more for you, you know? I kind of know what its like, to be in your position, but I... I don't feel right telling you what to do, because that's the opposite of what you want to hear." She sighed. "I.. just want to be there for you but I don't want to get in your way."

Chika blinked, and smiled a bit when Ayane told her that Ran was her boyfriend. So, that guy Ayane had been talking about earlier was Ran... he was nice, Chika thought. A bit strange, but he reminded Chika of the way her brother had been. Ran was like him. More flippant, maybe. And Ken had never jumped off of any rooftops or anything. But somehow she felt like he was a person that could be depended on.

Ayane went on to talk about people doing things because they could, and Chika couldn't help but reach to the back of her neck and rub at the place where the pinprick had been, frowning more deeply still when Ayane talked about wanting to do more for her. The girl shook her head, slowly. "Please don't. Don't worry 'bout me, I can deal with stuff. I've kept it together this long, haven't I? I--"

She stopped short, bit her lip, and then shook her head again.

"...Nevermind," she said. "Let's just drop it. Just--don't bother yourself about me, okay?"

Rubbing at the back of her neck still, her voice took on a more puzzled sound. "I don't have any idea who did it. They stuck me with a sedative, though," she mumbled. "In school, when I was gettin' my stuff and ready t' leave. Must've been a student. I just wish I knew why they went for me. I haven't done nothin' t' no one..." She paused. "And Kurosawa can't know what I know about 'im, if he had the stones t' go after anyone it'd be Ryoichi-san before me, so it couldn't be him. Um--"

The girl's eyes re-focus a bit, and she blinked, as if remembering something.

"...Oh, right. You're friends with Ryoichi-san, right? He and I talked for a bit. At first I kinda got on his case, but--well, the thing is, Hibiki Kurosawa was usin' rage magic on this one guy at school, and it looked like Ryoichi-san knew about it, so I wanted him t' tell me what he knew, but it turned out he was reluctant t' say 'cause he felt bad rattin' on a friend. I had the wrong idea about 'im at first..."

Ayane took it by her smile that she approved. "We make an odd pair, but I don't think I would ever change that." The snakegirl nodded. "Of course, we're not so different. Hell, you might even be stronger than me."

She held her arm out, the black tattoo of a serpent coiling around her arm. "I needed a symbol to remember that. Inner strength, I mean." She stared at her arm for a long time. "Alright, Chika-san is Chika-san, I'll still protect you in the ruins, but I'm not going to butt in where I don't need to." She nodded twice.

"Chika-san is my friend, that's all that matters."

Ayane's look of repressed anger shook through her body a few more times as she spoke about the bastard who left her for dead. People who attack others because they could sickened her. It was something about picking on someone who can't fight back.

"They can't fight back when they can't breathe, you know."

She nodded. "Richi-kun's always been a bit like that. Out of all of us, he's the most honest. Poor guy.. he would probably have more friends if his memory wasn't so bad." She bit her lip for a moment before looking away from Chika. It was her fault Yuzuki went so far, her fault that Ryoichi couldn't remember his own birthday.

All because she was their friend.

She forced a smile. "I'm glad you came. I've been kind of lonely after Ran-kun left." She paused for a moment. "He went home, not left left, I know he won't do that again. If he does, he'll have a good reason."

"I'm sure he won't leave ya behind," Chika said, nodding slowly. "He's... got a good heart in there. Like my brother did. He does his own thing but he never lets go o' the people he cares about. Like my brother with..."

The girl trailed off, frowning, and then shook her head. She was being silly. Sentimental. Projecting Ken onto Ran. She closed her eyes, opened them, and chained rails:

"...Ryoichi-san is nice, but I don't think he likes me," she mumbled quietly. "At first I thought he was nervous 'cause a girl was askin' him t' lunch. I wanted t' make it up to him for gettin' in his face, but the whole time he looked sorta like he didn't wanna be there. I was hopin' he and I could--well, be friends. Maybe." Chika shifted uncomfortably. "I-I don't really wanna think about boys that way right now, but I was hopin' he and I could be friends at least. But he seemed t'wanna get away from me as fast as he could. I-I haven't bugged him since, but..."

The girl bit her lip, and then looked to Ayane with a look of concern on her face.

"Ayane-san, is the way I act... creepy? Kind of? Maybe? I mean I know I'm not nice t'be around but, but would it have scared Ryoichi-san off or something?" she asked. "You know 'im better'n I do, so..."

Ayane nodded. "I had to find it, but its a little beaten, but its still good. Its why I want to stay with him, I want to... I want to help him realise love isn't poison." She bit her lip, unsure why she was admitting this, but continued on. "He loved someone before, but he told her those words and... they ran. He thought the words did it, so he was scared to say them."

She paused again. "I wanted to help him understand that love wasn't like that. You could say I fell in love with him when I saw that heart."

Ayane understood the reason, or perhaps a potential one, but it wouldn't be right to admit that. That was a secret. The snakegirl listened, unsure about the fate of her friend. The two hadn't seen each other in a while and though that was rather saddening, it wasn't like she expected great chunks of his time. She was a vigilante and he was a normal school student, albeit not all that bright.

Then she had no idea what to say. "...Chika-san, I'm going to be honest." She bit her lip a few times. "I like you, I really do. But you're kind of quiet. People might think you're weird for that. Richi-kun is probably having other problems.. I don't know what he's been doing recently, but he's always been easily worried since we were kids. Don't let it get you down, okay?" She gave her best smile.

"I don't think he was scared off by you though."
