WHERE THE FUCK IS MARIO
Ayane Hitomi did not like hospitals. But with her arm in a cast and her legs out of commission, she didn't have much say in the matter. The accident had been lucky, she wouldn't lose any of her limbs permanently, but she wouldn't be able to walk for a while. This angered her, along with saddened her. She wasn't even sure if anyone knew what she had done.

Her effects had been taken, the bike hadn't been completely written off, thankfully. It was still salvageable. But on the bedside table lay her phone. She tried to reach it before growling in anger and basically, defeat. She was a free spirit, like the wind itself, now she was like earth. Unmoving. Her mind counted the tiles on the ceiling before finally resting her head back down again.

"At least I'm still alive."

"Is that what you want?"

The story had made the news. It was covered by the local television, radio, and several newspapers. It was the radio story that Ran heard first. "---traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a cargo truck. The motorcyclist, a young woman in her early twenties was admitted to a hospital due to severe injuries---." At the time, he didn't know it was Ayane. There were plenty of women in their early twenties in Japan, and surely a decent chunk of them owned motorcycles, or at least drove them from time to time, but he'd happened to know that Ayane had taken hers for a ride that day, and she happened to be a young woman in her early twenties who happened to be very close to his heart. And she hadn't come home yet. So naturally he had gotten worried.

Once it had become confirmed, in keeping with his fears and against all his hopes, that it had indeed been Ayane that had driven into a barricade at full speed and subsequently crushed beneath her own motorcycle, he had run off to the hospital she had been admitted to as soon as he found out how the fuck to get to it. The reports had said 'admitted to hospital with severe injuries'. They hadn't said 'deceased', and thank whatever twisted forces of the universe were running this damn place for that. They were dickheads for letting the accident happen in the first place, though.

It wasn't technically visiting hours yet, but if a man couldn't break into a hospital to see his severely injured---yeah, he'd say it---lover, then what was the world coming to? He might have given some of the other patients with window views a mild case of heart attack, but...it'd be fine. They were in a hospital, after all.

And so he hoisted himself through the window, which a kindly nurse had left open for fresh air due to the nice weather.

He held up a medium-sized plastic bag.

"I brought fruit."

Ayane had heard a strange sound as she was trying to keep herself occupied. It sounded like scratching. It sounded like it was coming from outside. And as the man she loved came through the window, she had finally found its source. She chuckled for a few moments. "You really weren't kidding. You really do follow my heels."

She paused for a moment, raising her one good arm. "I like that. I think that's what I like most about you, you're so... loyal. Not like... obeying or anything... I'm bad at this..." She tapped her hand against her head, a bandage secured around her forehead like a bandanna. "The point is, I'm grateful Ran-kun." Her eyes darted to the bag and smiled.

"What fruit did you bring?"

Ran quirked up an eyebrow and grinned. “What, you thought I was kidding? No no, you’re not getting off that easy, Ayane-san. When I say 'stuck with me forever' I mean stuck with me forever." He tapped his nose. "I'm like a bloodhound."

Coming closer, he looked at the bag in his hand, as if trying to remember its contents. "There's apples...," he said. "And a couple of oranges...and an avocado. Which I heard are supposed to be like, packed with potassium. I thought you might like one because it's green." His freehand reached up to absently wipe his nose. "It's all fresh, too. Got it on the way here. I'll pay for it...later. I could peel them for you, if you want?" His hand went up again, wiping his eyes this time, a little shakily. He was standing beside the bed now, but not looking at Ayane's face. His eyes glanced over her legs, to her arm, where they lingered. 'Severely injured'. The reporters hadn't been clear on whether the motorcyclist's condition had been critical or not, at first. But she was here. She was alive.

"I uh, thought about getting you some ice cream. But I was kind of in a hurry." The tremor had sneaked into its voice. "Besides, I thought it might...melt...or something..."

He reached up to wipe his eyes again, but there was more wetness there now. Some of it had started to roll down, in thick, salty drops.

Ayane chuckled at his reply. "That's good. I always hoped the person I fell in love with would chase me forever." She paused for a moment. "I mean... I don't stay still for very long. If that means being stuck with you forever, then that's a life I'm happy with." She tapped her free hand at her bandage with an idle rhythm.

As he listed off the stuff in the bag she grinned. "I like Avocados and Apples." His reasoning was strangely on the mark, Ayane had always preferred the green fruits. "...If you don't mind peeling them Ran-kun, I would be grateful."

The girl could feel his emotion, his voice, his posture... it worried her. Had she done something so bad, a mistake, and not thought of the reaction...? A memory of his words, the first person he had said those words to had left him. "Its okay, fruit is better for me after all. We can have icecream when I get better, but no chocolate!" She forced a chuckle, for his benefit.

"I remembered." She gave a serene smile, happy just to have him there next to her.

Ran let out a snort of laughter, somewhat strained, and grinned a damp grin. "No, that's worrisome." He quickly wiped his face. "Now you know what to feed me when I've been bad," he joked. In reality, it actually made him rather happy that Ayane would remember something small about him like that. Perhaps that was silly, but it did.

The waterworks were proving stubbornly troublesome to turn down. He wasn't really sure what to do with them; not where they came from, nor how to make them stop. All he could do was keep wiping them away and refuse to acknowledge their existence. When he'd heard that Ayane had been a crash, he'd been scared. Terrified, in fact. Now that he knew she was still alive, he was relieved, but he also hated to see her like this; hurt, bed-bound against her will. It was all culminating into...a bit much.

Carefully sitting down on the edge of the hospital bed, he took out his pocket knife and indicated the bag of fruit. "What would you like to have first?"

She chuckled. "You mean force you to lick off my chest~" The girl gave a sultry smile before looking back at his face. He was crying still. "Ran-kun... did I do something to make you sad? I... I know this happened and all but..." Her voice died in her throat. She went quiet for a short while, trying to feel his feelings, but couldn't quite get into the same position.

"...The apple!" She grinned to herself, trying to touch his shoulder with her free hand. "It means a lot to me you're here. I'll be honest. I'm scared. I don't like hospitals."

Ran shook his head. "If you're thinking that you did something wrong..." His voice was just a little shaky. "Then I'd like you to stop that. I'm just glad you're alive."

With a flick of the wrist and a click the pocket knife slid into sight. Taking an apple from the bag--a nice, fresh, green one--Ran put the blade against the fruit and began to scrape away the skin. When a long, green ribbon had fallen to the floor, he cut the fruit into parts and presented them to Ayane, flicking the knife back into the handle and putting it away. He took a hold of her hand, then, which she had reached out to touch him, and smiled.

"I'm scared, too."

Ayane nodded slowly. "Thanks... I just... I kept worrying that after what you said... that after you said those words this happened... I didn't." She shook her head. "I didn't want to poison those words for you again. I love you and wouldn't do anything to harm you."

She took an apple part and chewed on it. When she felt the warmth of his hand she smiled a little wider. "I... I just don't want you to think that... urgh I'm repeating myself. Stay with me. As long as you can. I need you here with me."

She closed her eyes to try and focus her jumbled thoughts, settling on squeezing Ran's hand instead.

"I love you."
