Edward just stood motionlessly beside the bed. The surgery was successful, and Shiki's condition was stable. She was lying on the bed, seemingly unconscious. Edward believed that the teacher had used her body to shield the children from the explosion, and this was the result of that. "Stupid..." Edward muttered. Because of him, many people were hurt. He didn't like this. He didn't like this at all. He was alright if that bastard only targeted him and him alone, but to get other people involved into this, that's just stretching it. He also received treatment earlier due to his wound. But he was mostly alright, so he was allowed to go home after that. But he still needed to watch over this woman. And a while ago, he contacted Masumi because he thought that woman might need to know that he was involved in an incident. Perhaps the whole town had learned about the bombing at the kindergarten by now, but thankfully there was no casualty. "..." Edward looked at the unconscious Shiki's face. It was his fault that this kind of thing happened. If only he wasn't there, she wouldn't get hurt. "...I'm sorry..." he said. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

The only reason Masumi Suzuki managed to find the time to visit Edward that day was because she had accepted a part-time job as a daytime custodian at the hospital two days prior, and he happened to be there during her shift. It was finally break-time; normally she would have used this time to rest her legs, get something to eat, and "recharge" for the next few hours of tedious busywork. Today there was something more important to do. Masumi rushed to the room she knew to be that of the kindergarten teacher, Shiki Kunagiri. She had, of course, heard of the incident... vaguely. Only about as much as gossiping nurses in the lunchroom could tell her. When she arrived in the doorway she found Edward there, as she had expected, standing over Kunagiri's still-unconsciou form. "Edward-san," she said, stepping into the room. "Edward-san, I..." The fortune-teller gulped, running a hand through her hair, finding no words. If Edward turned to look, he would see that she was still in uniform, bearing a nametag identifying her as janitor. Ghostly blue eyes, black hair, and sapphire butterfly hairclip were as familiar as always, though. |

Edward looked at Masumi who entered the room. Normally, he would tease the woman for her appearance, but this time, he didn't feel like doing it. "Oh, it's you..." he said before he looked back at the unconscious Shiki. Still looking at Shiki, Edward asked Masumi, "You work here?" |

"As of two days ago, yes..." she said humorlessly. "And until they decide they don't need the extra hand on clean-up duty... Edward-san, I--what happened? Are you okay?" Masumi stepped up next to the bed along with Edward, looking down at the patient there... Shiki Kunagiri, a woman that Masumi had never seen before. In any other situation, Masumi might have felt a bit jealous--this woman was quite beautiful, and if his manner was anything to go by, she meant something to Edward--but now wasn't the time for such petty reactions. "Is she a friend of yours?" Masumi asked. "I asked about her before I came up here... they say she'll be okay. I'm glad..." |

Edward continued to look at Shiki's face. Her beautiful face was scarred by the explosion, and it was his fault. She was unconscious, and it was his fault. Some of her students were injured as well, and it was also his fault. "She's... a friend..." Edward nodded, still focusing to look into her face. "...and it's my fault she's hurt..." he lowered his head as if in shame. |

"Edward-san, I..." Masumi sighed, but there weren't any words she could give, other than useless platitudes. So she edged up closer to the man and snaked her arm around him, frowning. "I'm sure she wouldn't believe that," she said. "The ones at fault are the monsters who would go through schoolchildren to get to you, as if lives don't matter." The woman leaned in close. "...That kind of terrible person," Masumi murmured, more to herself than to Edward. "Why do people fall to such depths?" |

"...No idea..." Edward shrugged his head. He just let Masumi did that to him and he wasn't bothered by it. "Depravity will always cause people to not see the implications of their actions..." he sighed. "I already know that. After all, I used to see such depravity in front of my eyes..." "Those who did this..." Edward said, closing his eyes. "They'll pay for this..." If Masumi activated her scanning ability, she would be able to tell that something was happening inside Edward, as if something was changing. But it hadn't truly manifested yet. |

Masumi didn't use her scanning ability while she was in the hospital, or near it, except in very short bursts, however. People died in hospitals. She preferred to be ignorant of exactly how many, where, or when. "I suppose you must have..." she whispered. "But don't think too much about revenge. Bring them to justice, certainly. Make sure they pay, but don't... focus on revenge." Masumi hesitated, closing her eyes, and then whispered: "I don't want to think of you spending the last weeks of your life with something so ugly in your heart." |

Edward turned to look at Masumi, and for once, he showed the woman a sincere, genuine smile. He was glad that the woman was worried of him, but he didn't want to get more attachments in this world, considering that he only had so limited time to live. "Don't worry..." he said. "It's not a revenge..." he reassured. "It's something else..." As he said that, suddenly they were no longer in the hospital room. Instead, they were in the middle of a bloody battlefield, the Battle of Camlann where Mordred had been slain by his own father, King Arthur. Corpses could be seen anywhere. It's just obviously an illusion, but apparently Mordred caused such illusion to appear before them. "Can you see it?" Edward said, facing Masumi. "I always dreamed of this scenery, filled with blood and corpses..." his smile seemed melancholic. Then, Mordred appeared above Edward. "And you know what? I just realized the meaning of this scenery..." |

Edward-san?! Masumi was speechless, staring around her at the illusory battlefield, the battlefield she'd fleetingly seen in the ruins that night, when Edward had transformed, turned into a monster. Reflexively, she reached for her Persona, reached out with her mind to touch Edward. Fleetingly, she was concerned that something bad was happening, something terrible. But he spoke so calmly. And she could feel something, something inside him, his Persona-- As if the thought had summoned it, Mordred appeared, floating above him. Masumi slowly pulled her hands away, staring at Edward in confused wonder. Was this...? |
