She could only shrug in response to Chika's assessment of Nagashima. She'd sooner have the chaos to the banality of the rest of the world. Her own future was irrelevant, those of others? Not even worth a thought. There was here and now.

Well…" She began. If not here, then where would you rather live, Chika-san?"

Oh, but most importantly, and lest she not forget!

"W-wait. Ninjas? Are you really being serious?!"

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
Chika shook her head, closing her eyes and leaning back against the headboard again.

"...Ya really haven't noticed them Tanaka-clan people scurryin' around?" she asked quietly. "Yeah, ninjas. Really." There was a pause, then, a pause as Chika considered the other girl's question, her eyebrows furrowing together for several long moments before returning to a flat, neutral sort of expression.

"As for where I''d rather live," she added, "dunno. It's not like movin' to a nicer town'd bring my family back, so why should I care? All the death and hurt and poverty in this town just makes me hate the place, is all. And all the stupid stuff mixed in with it's just... stupid."

It wasn't a very intellectual analysis of the state of things in Nagashima, but Chika really didn't care whether or not she was right to feel as she did, nor whether or not anyone agreed with her about it. She certainly didn't care whether or not the klutz who'd knocked her out of her wheelchair agreed with her about it, at any rate.

"If that's the case. I can see why you wouldn't really like it anywhere."

She didn't know that about Chika. She was sympathetic but what could she say that would help? Nothing! There's no magic words that make this all better.

"Still, I can see why you'd not exactly have a high opinion of a place where someone shoved you down an escalator. Or some idiot stumbles along and makes that worse!" It was probably what Chika thought. No harm saying it out loud. "I wanna make it a little less horrible for you. Not out of obligation. I just wanna. I need to do more constructive things with my time anyways, so there!"

Chika gritted her teeth, closing her eyes a little tighter.

"Don't go thinkin' ya hafta butt inta my business or anythin', I already said not t' worry about this," she sighed in an exasperated voice. "...But you're right, I prolly wouldn't like it anywhere else, either."

Chika's eyes half-opened, staring down at her broken legs as if not even seeing them.

"The world's an ugly place no matter where ya live."

"Mmm, I wonder though. Does it really have to be that way?"

The matter that she didn't have to was effectively moot now. She already knew she didn't have to, and she was doing it because she wanted to. That was that. But still, it was probably going to be about time to go soon.

"Okay, Chika-san? I'm going now. I hope you enjoy your books and. I don't know. If you aren't satisfied with the way things are, why not try to change them? Even if it doesn't work, you're only out an attempt, right? I'll try to be around earlier tomorrow."

Oh, she'd probably just laugh at that. It didn't matter though. Hanako wasn't going to settle for things as is, and if Chika's so displeased with it, she shouldn't either. It seemed pretty simple. She got up and gave her a small smile and a wave as she departed.

Chika bristled, but before she could formulate a retort, the girl had gone. That was another one. Another one who didn't understand.

Didn't understand at all.

Chika tried to focus on her books after the girl had left, but even the new ones couldn't hold her attention for long. Eventually she just gave up and set them down on the bedside table with the others, and laid back, closing her eyes, trying to nap and trying not to remember the strange tingling giddiness that she felt whenever she remembered the dying man...
