Oh my God, I LEFT THE STOVE ON AT HOME!

Seiichi wanted Hanako to see something. He had planned this 'excursion' out minute-for-minute. Lollygagging was not acceptable, even the slightest exposure ran the risk of Seiichi being caught. So they waited until the activity within the hospital settled down. It was close to midnight when the two snuck into the hospital.

It should be here somewhere... thought Seiichi, looking for his father's room. He then came across the room in question.

He gingerly opened the door. Inside the room was a sleeping man in his thirties with blue eyes and brown hair, lying in bed with an IV in his arm. "Hanako...this is my father." said Seiichi. Hanako would notice his tone was uncharacteristically somber.

Briefly, she entertained the idea of playing klutz. 'Accidentally' knocking over a gurney or making some noise just to watch him in the mental anguish over being exposed. In the end, she'd just settle for taking her time getting to him, with whispered apologies that 'this was her first time doing something like this'

Despite the fact that she'd memorized the layout of the hospital in case of of the previous objects of obsession had to come, so she could get in an out without notice.

But there she was, dressed in something somewhat nondescript, dark tights, short pleated skirt, and a sweater with a dark coat over it.

"I…I see."

She didn't have an ounce of empathy left for Seiichi. The gravity of the situation meant nothing to her, heart she'd hardened against him or no, she'd have to play at being moved here for her plans to be advanced.

"U-um, hello! Sorry to visit you at such an hour!" She said, with a nervous quiver in the voice she was careful to keep down. She also put her hands together and bowed deeply at the hips in the direction of the man on the bed.

Satoru Akamatsu opened his eyes, and looked at Seiichi. "D-do I know you...?"

Seiichi took a sharp intake of breath, as if in pain. No matter how many times he told himself to move on, Seiichi still felt agonized whenever dad failed to remember him. "N-no...I-I don't think so." said Seiichi, his voice quiet. "Are you here to change my IV?" asked Satoru. Seiichi nodded silently, pulling out a poisoned IV bag.

The time to cut his losses was upon him. Treo could easily use Seiichi's father against him, a thought Seiichi found sickening. Seiichi did his best not to cry as he changed the bags, letting the slow acting poison drip down the tube.

Seiichi didn't want to do this, but felt like he had to. This was not an act of hate.

This was an act of mercy. "I'm sorry, Hanako. I have to break my promise one time tonight. It's for the best."

Satoru looked to Hanako. "Hanako? That's a lovely name. M-my wife was named Hanako."

Seiichi felt like someone had grabbed his intestines and yanked them out. How could he forget? His mother, who had died in labor when Seiichi was born, was named Hanako...

A tear formed in the corner of Seiichi's eye. He made no attempt to brush it away.

"Oh, Seiichi!"

She turned turned away and covered her mouth with her hands. Outwardly? It was a sign of moved sympathy. Really? She was trying to mask her initial reactions. Under that hand, she had the most vicious, vile devilish grin in her whole life. She bit her tongue so hard the coppery tang of the taste of blood tained her mouth. At least that made it that much easier to produce tears on command.

What a farce!

She only sniffled and slowly nodded as he asked her permission for one last kill. Meanwhile, her mind was already busy at work thinking of ways she could subtly sabotage this for him. If Satoru was dead? He was a fondly remembered ancestor. But alive? He was the ultimate symbol for how she wanted Seiichi to be seen by the whole world: Completely and utterly forgotten and forsaken.

She threw herself at him, hugging him tight.

How fitting was it that the woman who gave his life and the one who would take it away from him shared the same name?

"Do you see why I do this, Hanako-chan?" asked Seiichi so only Hanako could hear him. "It's because the most effective way to hurt someone...it isn't by shooting them, or attacking them...it's going after the people they hold dear. I have many enemies, Hanako, but not many loved ones. In fact, the only people I care about are all in this room. Now, the only way someone could ever get to me is if they hurt you. And I will never let that happen."

"S-Seiichi?"

Seiichi paled. Dad chose now, when he was at death's door, at the hands of his reluctant son, to remember him?! Truly, this was the cruelest joke the world could ever play on him! Seiichi's eyes watered as he took his father's hand.

"H-hey Dad..." said Seiichi, a forced smile on his face. Satoru smiled feebly. "Sorry you have to see me like this, sport." Satoru's eyes fluttered, and Seiichi wanted to cry out, to beg his dad not to die, to take the poisoned IV and jam it into his own arm, so he could burn in hell as he deserved. But he didn't. Seiichi just hugged his father as Dad took his last breaths.

"I-I know you're not long for this world." whispered Seiichi. "A-and that th-there's no-nothing to be done...I-I just wanted to say..."

Seiichi felt his heart sink to somewhere around his stomach as he felt his dad's breathing stop.

"Goodbye."

Seiichi let go of his dad, visibly reluctant to do so. He turned to Hanako. "Come on, we need to leave." said Seiichi, his eyes filled with tears.

"mmm…"

She suddenly felt a bit guilty. Wanting to draw this out. No matter the fury she felt towards his son, there was no reason at all to prolong this man's suffering just for her own ends.

Perhaps…perhaps this was for the best? It was a terminal disease, and if circumstances were different Seiichi might have been asked to do something similar.

She looked at him, and regarded him differently than before. This wasn't the crazed, fanatical devotion she once had. Nor was it the kindly mask she wore to hide her festering loathing. It was some real, actual sympathy. In thinking of his father, she realized Seiichi was someone's son, and he actually cared about this man. It was an aspect of him she could honestly say she didn't hate.

She took his hand as they would slip back into the night and go home.
