"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Chika frowned. That list. Kyo was on that list. She didn't know anyone else on that list (apparently there were a couple of people on there the world could really do without), but when she had seen that the same man who'd collapsed this parking lot had also marked her old friend down as someone he wanted to see dead... ...It hadn't been a pleasant sight. "Just two thousand an hour, huh," she muttered, mostly to distract her from this. "Figures. Everyone wants to cheap their way out of givin' anyone else a livin'." Her father may have had trouble holding down a job, it was true, but if his employers had been more understanding, he might at least have been able to eke out some sort of living. And then there were the jobs Kenshin worked, doing the work of an adult and getting paid peanuts simply because he was a high school student. Chika's gaze took on a bitter edge. She cast her mind around for another distraction, since this one had already led to something else she didn't want to dwell on. "...This business or, gang, or whatever it is," she said. "You guys're cleanin' up the backsteets, is that right?" |

"Call it an organization," Nana said. She nodded. "Yep. The police don't help out 'round there, and there just ain't enough Mask Furais to save everyone. So we're doin' it ourselves. We're renovatin' houses and takin' out drug dealers who were hangin' out in old places, and I'm even workin' on gettin' us a demolitions license so we can take out some of them old, run down apartments. If there's less old, dirty places around, it'll just be plain safer for people, y'know? 'Course, that ain't all we've been doin'. It ain't all buildin' and renovatin' when you're workin' somewhere like the backstreets." Indeed, she'd been very busy with organizing the crime. There'd always be thieves and drug dealers, but at the very least she could put a degree of control on them. People who tried to elbow in without checking with her first learned very quickly why you checked with Samurakami first. |

Chika nodded absently, looking almost as if only half-listening, but from her behavior up to this point that may just have been her version of "paying attention" from Nana's point of view. "If it works, I guess," said Chika. Indeed, she thought: if it worked, there might be a few less cases like her brother or mother, a few less of herself left to pick up the pieces in the aftermath. "It looked on Bedlam like the other Persona-users might not sit back and let it happen, though..." Edited by The One True Nobody, Mar 7 2013, 02:09 PM.

Nana scratched the back of her head. "Ain't a lot of people who agree with my tactics. Can't see the forest for the trees, or however it goes. 'Cause some of the little trees that make up that forest are a little rotten, so all they do is say stuff like 'the whole bushel's rotten 'cause of these little trees', when all these little trees're doin' is makin' a new life for people like me and Kanon." She smiled and turned to Chika. "But what I'm sayin' isn't important. What's important is what you think. Am I right?" |

"Makin' a new life, huh..." Chika couldn't help but murmur. A new life. That was something. That was something that seemed like a pipe-dream to Chika right now. But really, could she say it was entirely out of reach? She thought of herself as beyond fixing, but was that really true? The red-haired girl stood in silence for a few moments. She had new caretakers. Actual money now. There were people here that she thought might be friends, even if her past experience with people who claimed that word wasn't exactly encouraging. Chika hated Nagashima, hated it with nearly every fiber of her being so far, but-- --but that was another thing. Making a new life. Making a new life for people who'd grown up in the armpits of this shithole town. People who had probably lived through something like the same impoverished, struggling lifestyle she had. Maybe Samurakami's organization might even make it so other people didn't have to make the sacrifices Chika had. Chika Nakadachi turned away from the sinkhole. What was the point of staring out at that thing, anyway? She'd just been on her way see what the bookstore on Matechi Street might have had, and she'd gone and diverted to the hospital for some reason. Just to stare at the aftermath of a brutal catastrophe? This was a waste of time. It would be better to focus on her own new life. Maybe there was something there worth living, after all. "Samurakami-san, I don't know if it means much comin' from me," the girl said at last, look Nana in the eye. Her expression remained flat, bland, but there was energy there, as if the red-haired girl had finally woken from her stupor. "But good luck. I dunno if what you're doin' can work or even last, but... I hope it does." Edited by The One True Nobody, Apr 25 2013, 08:43 AM.

Nana stood beside Chika in silence, letting the girl think. Wasn't any reason to say anything when she was clearly deep in thought. When she spoke up, Nana grinned. "That means a lot t' me," Nana said. "It's good t' know that there's people out there who do agree w' me, ya know?" She stretched and said, "You gonna hang 'round here and watch? It could get pretty dangerous, what with all o' the uh... surveyin' we're doin'." She looked back over at the sinkhole, where a couple of excited looking teenagers were pretending they were rock climbing on the side of the sinkhole. She laughed and shook her head. No matter how much responsibility they had thrust on them, they were still pretty young. She wouldn't fault them for wanting to have some fun. |

"...Nah, my..." (Chika glanced around, to make sure none of the bystanders were near enough to hear, but lowered her voice just the same.) "...Persona's weak against physical attacks. So it's probably not a good idea for me t' hang around construction, or surveyin', or... rowdy people in general, really." While she hadn't meant it as a tacit means of saying she wouldn't be helping out any street gangs, it probably served as one anyway. People who are weak against physical attacks should stay well clear of bullets and baseball bats, right? "I'm gonna go get stuff done," she said. "Thanks for gettin' that guy off my back." As she moved to walk away, it occurred to her that she hadn't introduced herself. So she stopped and added: "...My name's Chika Nakadachi, by the way. Class 2-1. Maybe we'll run inta each other at school sometime." And then she moved on. Where was the bookstore again? She recalled seeing one the last time she was here, but where had it been? Reading was something she could enjoy. Chika was grateful to Isoroku if only for getting her into it. Books beat the shit out of staring at the wall doing nothing, anyway. |
