"FORGET ABOUT THOSE FUCKING DUMPLINGS!"

The voice came from upstairs. Shouting in English, and most likely on the roof. Who could that possibly be. Torako rushed up the stairs, one leg after the other. Her body carried her on its own, like a machine following instructions. When she reached the peak of the stairs, the door opened on its own, with a slim figure visible in the sunlit door frame.

"Hey, Chuck..." said Torako meekly, looking towards the stairs below his feet. Was it something she said? She started to bite her lip. She only told him to slow down when he was eating though, and-

"Torako, I can see the tension on your face. You do this little sort of pouty thing and-"

The girl crossed her arms and stomped her foot. "I do not!"

"Do too." said the boy, doing a impression of his usual smile. He only managed to smirk with half of his face, and turned away quickly. "Now get up here, alright? I feel like talking for a bit."

She willingly obliged, sprinting up the remaining stairs and walked through the door, taking a seat on one of the benches. The roof was unusually empty today, with nothing but stomped out cigarettes and a view of students all over the courtyard for company. She put her legs together, and placed her hands on her lap. The quiet boy took a seat besides her, keeping a fairly small distance from her. He hunched forwards, propping his elbows onto his thighs, turning his head to the tall girl besides him. "The hell are you so uptight about outta nowhere?"

She opened her mouth, but took a little bit to actually speak. "I... was wondering why you just stormed out after eating the lunch. Was it the dumplings?" Honest answer from her mouth, and completely honest question.

It was Charles' turn to let his mouth chew the tension. "You learned well from me. You can cook good. Dumplings were tasty like hell." said the boy, insincerity ringing dully. He turned his head away, scratching his cheek, in an attempt to keep his face on. "You know, like most girls shou-"

The girl pulled his head over and slapped him. "First of all, stupid, stupid thing to say. Second, stop trying to change the topic." She wiped her hand on her lap, leaving a streak of brown powder on her skirt. "This is about you, not me here."

The boy made one of his characteristic faces of exclamation and confusion, his eyes managing to brighten back to normal for a moment.

"The fuck do you mean, about me? There's nothing up with me!" denied the youth, shaking his head vehemently. "Besides, what's it to you?" he said, tone becoming rougher.

Torako winced. "H-hey! W-what's that supposed to mean?" said the girl, quavering nervously. Part of it was exaggeration, and part of it was sincere shock. Since when did he ever snap like this? This must've been more than dumplings. "Seriously, what the hell is up with you? You said you wanted to talk, and now you snap at me?"

The boy recoiled slightly. His face was shocked at the fact that he made the tiger stutter in her tracks. "Well, I uh, erm.. Huh... I, hurmph...."

"Hi there, Naoya-kun!~"
said the tall girl, sarcasm lazily leaning out of her mouth.

"Shut up!"
said the boy, staring at the ground. "Look at you. Now you're acting like me or some shit. What is UP with you?"

The girl stumbled on her words for a moment. Now she did it. She managed to set the happy-go-lucky boy off. She started to frown a bit, and her stomach sank into her feet. She sighed wistfully, biting her lip. "Sorry. I'm not trying to fight you, okay?

The boy continued to stare at the floor. After a long pause, he spoke. "I know... Contrary to what you probably think right now, I'm kinda depressed over a bunch of shit."

Torako cocked an eyebrow up on her face as high as it could go. "You? Depressed about something? How does that work?"

The boy released a loud sigh, cupping his face in his palms. "It's very complicated. Believe it or not, I have more than one set of emotions."

"Well, no shit, Sherlock. I know that much."

"And... my head's a weird thing."
said the boy, leaning back up. "It hides mnemonics in everything."

The girl shrugged. Now he was using weird words out of nowhere. "So what does nnenommiks have to do with-"

Charles cut her off loudly. "Mnemonics. Nuu-mon-iksu. It's things that remind you of memories, Torako."

"So? I didn't create numauma- thing, did I?"

The exasperated boy shook his head. "The dumplings, smartass. They reminded me of something. Just, something from a really long ass time ago. Just, weird times, is all." said the boy with an attempt at a smirk. "Good times. But kinda bad now. Really bad times, I think."

The boy put a hand across his stomach, clawing softly in a sideways manner while staring outwards. His face was a blank slate for the duration of the conversation, but now the stoicism was crumbling down, starting with the gradual grinding of his teeth, leaving nothing but his scared demeanour about himself. He started to shake, clutching his stomach harder and harder, covering his mouth with his free hand. He started to shake more and more and more and more, until he started convulsing and hyperventilating, with his pulse racing.

The girl started to panic herself, and didn't know what to do. She didn't even ask if he was okay. She didn't even know what to say, really. Everything was surprising her all at once. The quietness, the wordiness, and the shakiness. She didn't know what was happening at all. But she wanted to stop whatever this was. So she did the first thing that came to mind.

Stomach was in pain. Shirt was soaked completely with blood. Guts were probably punctured a lot. Breathing was kinda tough, despite him doing it so fast. His stomach wouldn't stop moving forwards whenever he inhaled, stretching the gaping holes in his stomach. He was starting to feel dizzy. His face hurt a lot, as well. The air flowing through his slit cheeks exacerbated the situation more. He tried to scream. His face tried to tear off, in kind. Another jab to the stomach. Another scar, another puncture, another few millilitres of blood lost. His arms were still held outwards, and he didn't have the strength to move. What little he could see in the mirror in front of him was the face of a boy turning pallor, and the back of someone bigger than him. Someone laughing like a maniac, while the smaller boy's stomach turned into a pincushion for a butterfly knife.

He blacked out.

When he came to, he was clutching his stomach, and a pair of thin but solid arms were wrapped around him. His hand was around his mouth, and he was staring at the floor. His pulse was racing. But yet, he was starting to calm down. He turned his head to try and look at the source of the arms, but he saw nothing but the top of a clothed back, and a soft head of brownish-red hair. A face seemed to be pressed on his shoulder, and the person attached kept clutching his body tightly.

"Look, I don't need to know what happened, then. You're okay now, alright? I'm here. Relax."
cooed the girl into his ear

Charles slowed his breaths down. For some reason Torako was actually hugging him. She wasn't pulling the syrup routine nor was she angry. Somehow, she was in some third mode of operation, being some sort of weird caring. Since when did she have a dere side?

"You're fucking weird, you know that? Now you actually do something besides be some bitch out of a cartoon at me." said the boy. He wrapped his arms around her in return. "Jeez. Never thought I'd get a brohug from you."

The girl chuckled. "I could say the same thing. You always piss me off somehow."

Charles laughed back, and buried his face in her shoulder. Then the lunch bell rang. The two let go of each other, and started back to class.

"Damn. I was starting to feel all fuzzy and all that." said the boy, smiling normally.

"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Torako, smiling in a sly manner similar to his.

"Nothing..."

"Suurrreee."

"What's THAT supposed to mean?"

And so the bickering started again, and normality was back. Nothing was actually addressed by either one of them, but they felt better that way. But taking the first step in an unknown direction was better than nothing.
