Kumori held the door open with a foot and shook his head at Charles' introduction. "I just test well. There's nothing to brag about in that. And if you're not confident about your English, then Taiyoutono is a good place to get practice. There are plenty of fluent speakers in the school. Like Oliviera-san." The boy raised an eyebrow at Charles' offer, but shrugged it off immediately afterwards; it was something that the boy would do. He nodded encouragingly at Shizuka. "If Oliviera-san made it, then it's probably good." |

"...Thank you very much," Shizuka said graciously, looking mildly confused as she took the bun from Charles. Inside, she felt rather as though Cloud Nine had sprung up beneath her like a rug being yanked out from beneath her feet--only it took her along for the ride and she could do nothing but topple over onto her bum and hold on for dear life. W-well, there was no need to get ahead of herself, she thought, calming her emotions. He'd said friends, but, well, that didn't necessarily mean they'd be close friends, or even more than, like, lunch break buddies. And who knew, maybe after a day or two they'd get bored of her and walk away. Yes. Yes, that was probably how it would happen. No sense getting her hopes up before anything came of it. "Well," she said reasonably, "there's a lot of pressure on students to do well in every aspect of school, but as long as you learn the material you have what you need, don't you? So the testing really is the best indicator. No need to be uptight about the details if you get the important part done." |

Charles grinned and bit his bun as she took the her own. "Lots of love and attention goes into all my food. Don't worry. It'll be good. Best breakfast ever." As he chewed down on his bun, he noticed the girl sort of churning or something on the inside. Maybe. Or it was just his imagination. Everyone like being friends with Charles. No one found it weird how he said things like that. "Hurray for not being Japanese. I've had no pressure to succeed whatsoever, and I still do. Sort of. I'm like Kumori with how I just test well." said the boy. "Straight B's and C's man, I am." |

"Maybe," Kumori said neutrally, shrugging at the girl's assessment. He tried to think as little about the school system as was humanly possible, so he conceded the point. As they walked past the lockers, he walked away from the white pneumatic door, allowing it to close with a quiet click. The boy slowly eased himself into consciousness. The strength of his constant scanning increased slightly. He blinked a bit when he seemed to sense something in Shizuka. The potential? He couldn't detect the unawakened with as much certainty as Rio could afford, but he was among the most experienced scanners. "...It goes without saying, but if you have any trouble, don't be afraid to confide in either of us. There are a lot of strange things and problems in this town and we'll do our best to help you try and acclimate." The boy shifted his duffel bag and glanced at Shizuka. "Speaking of... have you already toured the town?" |

"Um, no, we actually just moved in yesterday," said Shizuka. "It was sort of rushed. My father got laid off from work and only just managed to get a job in Nagashima, so we had to pick up and move again..." She smiled. "It's nice of you to offer. But there's nothing going on right now, apart from the move and me hoping this school has a Kendo Team that girls can join. Does it, do you know?" She chose this moment to take a bite out of the bun that Charles had given her. Her eyes widened as all other worries were swept from her mind by the simple taste of it. She swallowed her mouthful and exclaimed, "Th-this is good!" |

Charles' eyes lit up. Bonding time was at hand. A fist pump followed the realization. "Well! Let me and Kumori here take you out on the town sometime! I know a few girls too, if hanging out with a couple dudes sounds a bit weird to you." A karate chop flew through the air in front of the boy. "Yeah, we got a kendo club. There are a lot of girls, I think. I'm a club leader, so you won't have any trouble getting in." Charles finished the last of his bun. "The taste of effort and youth! If you wanna learn how to make those, just ask me." |

"I'd be more than happy to show you around. There are some parts of town that you should probably learn to avoid, but there's also a lot of places to hang out. Oliviera-san knows more about it, though," Kumori glanced at the social butterfly. He frowned thoughtfully at Shizuka's question about kendo club. Apparently, they had rejected someone who wanted to join mid-season. "It'll be a bit unorthodox to join mid-season though... But if you're familiar enough with kendo, then they probably wouldn't have a problem with it. Our school's kendo club is big enough," Kumori nodded hesitantly. There were a couple of high-ranking members in the club. It operated under Raleigh, but other teachers and captains always had to step in to manage things. "It really depends on who you end up asking. Are you good with a bokken?" |

Shizuka smiled, this time genuine enthusiasm showing through on her face as clearly as she felt it beneath--even if the expression were gentler than it would be for most others. "I know my way around a sword," she said. "I was with the Kendo Team at my last school, and although I wouldn't call myself championship material, I took to it more than I thought I would when Miki... sorry, she was a classmate of mine--she pretty much nagged me into trying it out. I don't know what made her think I would be good at it, but it turned out I was." Her smile faded, and she now took on a mildly anxious air. "You don't think it would be too hard for me to join, do you?" Edited by The One True Nobody, Oct 28 2012, 11:48 PM.

Charles shook his head. "Nah. It shouldn't be too tough. As long as you can also whip some newbies into shape, they'll let you in. I can vouch for you anyways. Somehow." "A smiling face makes everything worthwhile!" |

"If you have experience, then they'll probably welcome you in." Kumori couldn't necessarily analyze a person down to specific physical traits, but Shizuka at least had enough combat potential to measure up in his scan. "I doubt that you'll have trouble getting into a club, so don't worry too much about it." He stretched and yawned. "Are you looking forward to any of your classes or thinking about any other clubs? If there's anything at all that we can help with to settle your nerves, let us know." |
