Conan looked over the library. Repairs had been slow coming, but the preliminary stages were mostly done. The smoke damage to the books had been awful.

But that was that. He had tried to stay out of the repair crew's way, but it had been difficult.

He threw open the door and declared: "All these shelves are yours. Except the reference shelf, attempt no check-outs there."

Unfortunately there were no students awaiting the reopening of the library. He frowned at the hallway, and returned to his desk, sitting behind the somewhat undersized furniture. He looked down at his desk, and sighed. Time to start sharpening pencils, he supposed.

Torako walked through the door with a yawn, walking towards the brick outhouse of a man. "Hellooo!~ This means I can grab books, woo!"

The girl leaned over the edge of the desk, checking if he was putting anything good back into the library.

"You'd think there'd be more people waiting for the library, huh?" said Torako, raising an eyebrow.

Madoka walked in, hefting a formidable stack of overdue books. Based on how Madoka didn't have any of the titles in recent memory, it was entirely possible that they were checked out in prehistoric times, long before man walked the earth. The dust that trailed the boy in a snowy flutter seemed to corroborate this. As he approached the box for turning in books, he began to dust off his selection.

"Yo. I have a few books to turn in."

More than fifteen.

"One would think," Conan said to Torako, shrugging, "I think people may have forgotten that there is a library."

He then looked over the stack of books that Madoka brought in. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, then grabbed the top one, attempting to scan it in. It didn't read. He tried twice more, with similar results. He opened it up and removed the smudged card from inside of it.

"How long ago were these checked out?" he asked, trying to read the date on it.

"Well, I didn't forget! There's still so many books I need to read! And I still need to borrow Paradise Lost, since someone still hasn't returned the Comedy yet!" burst Torako.

"Whoa. That looks like something my grandma used to read to me. How old ARE those?" asked the girl, looking to Madoka's books.

"Not sure about the dusty ones. I don't really remember reading them." Madoka shrugged. Aside from the Taiyoutono library barcode, Madoka wasn't sure where the books came from. He certainly didn't remember checking out any of those heavy books. He didn't remember smelling them, either. He wrinkled his nose at the smell of old.

"When the library got wrecked, did it mess up the system?"

"Well, it was a very slow wrecking," Conan said, "so I managed to backup most of the records."

Perhaps a member of Madoka's family had checked them out? An uncle, or some such. He looked over a Torako: "This is going to take a moment: Paradise Lost is....three down in the fifth row, left side. It's almost the exact center of the fourth shelf up."

He seemed to recite this information from memory: everything was still in its proper order.

"Now," he said to Madoka, "which ones do you remember reading?"

"Alrighty!~"

Torako strutted around the books, browsing and picking any other selections as she walked through.

"These ones." Madoka separated the books into two piles and pointed to the smaller. Among them were a book on enka that he used on a project a while back and a couple volumes of poetry and classical lit. that were assigned at some point in his academic career. The remaining books in the stack were a tossup of high- and non- fiction.

"Hey, so how do you keep track of all these books?" Madoka guessed that a librarian would know where everything was, but getting it all down to row-and-column was pretty mind-boggling. "Is there a trick that they teach you at librarian school?"

Conan scanned back the books Madoka had separated out, feeling immense relief when they fit into the system.

"I've got the organizational system memorized," he said. "And it maps almost perfectly onto the library. After the library closed down, I managed to put everything in order. After a week everything will most likely be in disarray, even with Watanabe-san's help."

He tried to think of a better way to explain it, but he couldn't think of a way to do it without the word "isomorphism" which he didn't know a Japanese translation of.

"So we need to figure out what to do with these," he said, looking at the stack of anomalous books.
