i don't know why i want to ask this...... i just do, ok? but recently i got thinking to myself why everyone fights, and i used to fight too but i don't anymore because it's stupid and pointless and it won't ever matter
but whatever this isn't about that
i want to know why you guys fight, what drives you to fight, what do you fight for? to do anything
no matter what you think you're fighting against
i just want to know

I'm not sure. Probably because it makes me feel like I have a purpose, or I don't have much of anything going on in my normal life. I get a gut feeling that if I gave up, I'd end up losing my mind.

Personally? I want to protect people, especially those close to me. The shadows are a threat we actually know very little about, and a disaster waiting to happen. I fight thugs when I come across one of them hurting someone or planning to hurt someone, though not if they're minding their own business. I fight in self defense, should I be attacked.
Essentially, I think the purpose of drawing a sword is so you can put it away with the knowledge you won't have to draw it again anytime soon. The only time I'm not fighting for that is when I'm sparring with friends to train for when lives are on the line.

As one who is interested in occult matters of all sorts, it would be against my creed to not investigate this matter. The psychological connections Personas and Shadows hold are also intriguing to me.
Oh, and I suppose it would be nice if our entire town wasn't destroyed by monsters born from human psyches.

I haven't been here long, so I don't have any deep or noble reasons. Honestly, my current reasons are that otherwise I would be a bad guest to this town if I didn't help out, and also that I want to be able to hold off the more unstable users if they snap near me.

"Between two groups of people who want to make inconsistent kinds of worlds, I see no other remedy but force."
There is the reason to fight. There are monsters out there. It is unscientific but it is true. These monsters want nothing more than the utter destruction of you and everything you know, have known and will know. They will fight you and should you be foolish enough to let them they will destroy you. The Shadows couldn't care less if you don't believe in fighting. They will still kill you. That Russian bitch whom we're all very familiar with? You think she is going to consider what sort of person you are before playing god with your body against your will? She's as much a monster as the ones in the ruins, and she will not stop until someone puts her, her plans and her army in the ground where they belong. And must we really go into the abomination of science that she keeps as her attack dog? It should go without saying, but since you seem to be questioning everything I should probably remind you. She and her two friends slaughtered a park full of innocent men women and - allow me to punctuate this - CHILDREN. FOR LAUGHS. And that is not exaggeration, she came on this forum to gloat about it like how a deranged serial killer gloats to the police. If the Russian and the Shadows are apathetic to your idiotic indecision, she's probably going to be amused by it for the few fleeting moments it'll take to rip you to shreds for fun and games.
Fighting ought to be common sense, but it seems some people don't get that. They want to wallow in their own self-loathing and condemn us all for the only remedy for this inevitable circumstance. To them I say that your selfish act of self-preservation is not only a detestable act of betrayal to the only people that aren't actively pursuing your demise, but it is also such an anathema to the only true method to self-preservation available to you that you may as well say you're saving yourself from the conflict by putting a gun in your mouth and pulling the trigger.

I swore an oath to protect the public trust, uphold the law, and defend the people. None of those three things has any room for not shooting monsters.

I don't. Got these thin, noodly arms, you see, and my persona doesn't have any offensive abilities other than occasionally saying offensive things. I'm more intelligence and community organizing.

I figure that it's important to decide what sort of person you want to be, and then act in accordance with that ideal.
I want to be the sort of person who helps others, defends the weak, makes things that are useful and beautiful, and strives always to be wiser and stronger than he was. And so that is what I attempt to do.
It's not always easy, but I'm committed to doing it. It's stupid to fight because you like fighting, or you find purpose in it, but if violence -- particularly to protect. You shouldn't try to be a jackass to people -- is part of the life you desire to lead, you shouldn't shrink from it. If it isn't, then shrink from it all you like.

-snip-
PotaDOS, for once I fully agree with you. I don't know why we were chosen by the Butterfly to wield the power of Persona. I don't know why it exists in the first place, and all those things we found in the Ruins don't make it any clearer. But I do know it has given us a chance to make things right-- to protect those people and those ideals we consider worth fighting for. There are people out there who want to hurt us and those we are close to. There are people out there with the same powers we have who would use them for their own selfish ends. And they won't stop until they get what they want, no matter how high the bodies pile. What use are our abilities if we don't devote ourselves to the betterment of the world we live in? What use is our status as the chosen ones if we decide to turn our backs on the burdens it gives us? I was granted this power by a quirk of fate. I never asked for any of this. But the Butterfly granted me a task I must fulfill, and I cannot turn away from it. I will defend this city and all the people in it against that which would seek to destroy it, and help guide it to a better tomorrow. Because I believe it is my responsibility-- no, our responsibility-- to set things right. That is why I fight.
