The last time Itsuki had lunch outside the cafeteria, a bunch of people had conveniently ended up joining him. Back then he would have raised little complaint.

Today, though, there was something in the air-- maybe it was the smell of the mystery meat, maybe it was the stares of the people around him-- that made him want to eat alone.

This time, Itsuki had made sure no one would be able to find him. As he headed down a dusty old hallway, he thanked the hours he had spent skipping class. Had he stayed in school he would have never gotten the chance to check out every nook and cranny of Taiyoutono.

Had he stayed in school like a good student, he would have never found the hidden service tunnel he was now standing in front of. Said tunnel had cobwebs hanging from every inch of concrete and steel piping, and a ladder red with rust that went all the way up to a distant light at the top.

"Welp, better get climbing," he said, putting the bento box between his jaws before taking hold of the first rung and beginning the climb.

The climb towards the light dragged on and on, a long laborious process of grabbing the first rung, pulling up, then grabbing the next and doing it all over again. Several times he had to pull himself up through a labyrinth of pipes, weaving through them in an attempt to avoid smacking his head on them. His aching jaws worked against the bento box, and he began regretting having picked something packed in plastic.

Finally, just when Itsuki thought he couldn't climb any more his fingers rubbed against concrete, and he hauled himself up. Through the door, he could see the rooftops of Taiyoutono's eastern wing, a white expanse of tiles bounded by a metal fence. Beyond the rooftop, the gray shapes of Nagashima's commercial district sprawled across the landscape, with the Tanjiro Shopping Center glimmering at the very center.

Breathing a sigh of relief, Itsuki found a seat atop a concrete block and opened his bento. The sauce atop the chicken had soaked into the rice, turning it a deep brown. Without it, the chicken looked awfully dry.

So much for convenience. The impulse to throw away the bento, chopsticks and all, was strong. But hunger won out over irritation in the end, and he settled down to eat.

Somehow he doubted he would be able to finish it all without a drink.

Lunchtime had become a time of exploration for Kotoba. A time to search for less populated areas so people couldn't see him eat. It was just so embarrassing, letting people see him stuff his face. The boy had thought that he would find a safe haven in the rooftop above the neglected halls. One had to travel through a service tunnel filled with cobwebs and climb a ladder surrounded by perilous pipes in order to reach the isolated roof, and it's not like any repairs were going on that day so it had to be empty, right? Kotoba shoved his bag out onto the concrete before pulling himself out of the tunnel, only to discover that someone else had found this place first.

That someone happened to be Itsuki. He was eating a bento. Just one person is okay, right? And it's Berserker-kun, so it's not a complete stranger...

Kotoba raised a hand in acknowledgement towards Itsuki. "Excuse me, hello. Is it alright if I eat here?"

Itsuki raised his head at the sound of footsteps. Oh, for the love of god, he thought, they had to find this spot too!? He ground his teeth and angrily waved his hand at the person, trying to shoo him away.

However, as he turned to look he caught sight of a long black shock of hair waving in the wind.

"Wait a sec..." He stood up. "You're that guy I saw in the ruins." Immediately his rage evaporated. Here was the man who saved his life, trying to have lunch with him-- and his first impulse was to send him away. He felt his cheeks burn with shame.

"Fine," he grumbled. "You can eat here. Just... don't... uh, ruin the atmosphere, alright?" The last part came out hurriedly: he feared he wouldn't sound as tough without a threat.

Kotoba was about to go off from the hand wave, but then Itsuki changed his mind. The boy was a bit confused. "Alright, I'll try not to." He eventually came to the conclusion that Berserker-kun was a tough guy or having a tough day.

Kotoba walked up and sat down on the floor off to the side. Out of his backpack he pulled out a water bottle and a clear plastic bag filled with a dozen plain hard rolls. The boy would have definitely received some odd glances and stares back in the courtyard or the cafeteria. But bread was good, and they were on sale yesterday.

They boy got one out and tore it in half as he started to eat. It was just easier to bite into them that way, even if it scattered crumbs a bit.

With Kotoba cowed, Itsuki continued his meal. He struggled manfully with the mouthful of rice moist with sauce and dry chicken, chewing even though the meat felt dry as rice paper. Okay, he thought, just a few more mouthfuls and then I'm outta here. Yet even though his jaws were working furiously, he had the feeling that if he swallowed, all that third-rate bento would stick in his throat, and he'd have to need Long Hair's help again before he choked to death.

The moment Kotoba bring out his lunch, however, he quickly forgot everything else. He wasn't even aware he'd swallowed until he opened his mouth.

"That's all you got?" Itsuki said, not unkindly. His heart sank as he looked at the bread rolls. This kid was probably too poor to afford a decent meal, let alone something that didn't look like it was made of sawdust. And here I am complaining about shitty bento. Man, am I a dick.

Hesitantly, he slid off his seat and approached Kotoba, holding out his bento.

"Uh... dude, that doesn't look like much. Here, you can have mine."

"Ah..." Kotoba looked down at the ground when Itsuki commented on his lunch. He'd thought that twelve hard rolls was a bit much since bread tends to fill him up. Guess it wasn't for other people.

Now Berserker-kun was offering his bento. The bento with delicious chicken and rice that was the whole of his lunch. "Are you sure? I mean, you're giving me your whole lunch, won't you be hungry later?" Kotoba looked a bit guilty as he looked up from the offered food to Itsuki.

Jozen found himself lost in the wide playground that was his new school. He was fine with being lost as it allowed him an opportunity to familiarize himself with the new terrain. He wasn't sure of what his class was or where the office he was supposed to be going to to find that out was either. He grinned as he walked aimlessly through the halls thinking of how his experience as a first year would treat him.

He caught a glimpse of a student turning a corner, and then another. It wasn't odd to see a student turning a corner, but with the halls thoroughly unoccupied, it tickled his curiosity and made him wander just was around the bend. He found himself following after the two students and watched as the latter of the two made his way up a ladder. The journey to their destination seemed perilous, the walkway was unkempt and didn't look like it had been touched by the janitorial staff in months or even years.

He questioned if the two students he had seen had dubious intentions, perhaps something gang related or maybe even occult. With the possibility of danger aside the prospect of what they may have been doing up there was too intriguing for him to let go. He followed after the brown haired boy with a cheeky grin on his face and a look of determination in his eyes. He gave the boy time to make it up the rung before he went up the ladder himself. "This is going to be interesting." the boy thought quietly.

Like his predecessors he pulled himself up the rungs, leaving his palms dirtied by the layers of dirt that came with traversing in the unattended realms of the school. He did his best to ignore the grimy feeling below his fingers and the possibilities of rodents centipedes crawling along his body. With each rung he felt his heart beat harder, anticipation was quickly intensifying and the possibilities of just what might be going on flooded his thoughts. As he pulled himself up to the top of the rung and noticed a door, he took a deep breathe and pushed it open.

His eyes were blinded by a large flash of light that pierced his vision. He raised his hand to his eyes and stood still, he waited patiently for his eyes to adjust. When he finally saw the two he had been thinking about for the past few minutes, he found that his fantasies were far from their mark. The young men were not of some occult group, or denizens of a shady organization, they were two boys, looking to eat their lunch. He frowned.

"Nah, I'm good," Itsuki said. The bento was settling in his stomach rather uneasily, as if he'd swallowed a bunch of steel weights. "Take it or I'll toss it out."

As he held the plastic box out, he spotted a blur of motion from the corner of his eye. "Who's there?" he yelled, his hair whirling as he turned around. "You spying on us or somethin'?" He could feel his heart pounding in his throat.

"Well, if you're just going to toss it..." Kotoba reached for the bento, but then Itsuki turned around and yelled about someone spying on them, moving it out of his grasp.

"Spy...?" Kotoba turned to face the same direction as Itsuki and saw a very tanned boy just standing there.

Jozen's stood still like a deer in the headlights at the mention of his presence. He gritted his teeth and looked at the two boys briefly. It was obvious to him that he had been spotted, but the pounding in his heart and the dryness of his throat made it hard for him to say something. He took a few breaths and swallowed a small trickle of spit to help moisturize the desert that had become his throat. He fought against the extra weight that had seemed to pool near his feet, and lifted the shackles of fear like an escaped convict.

"N..No." he stammered at a volume that would a mouse seem loud. He took a step to the left, to get out of the suns rays as the beams made him feel like he was being interrogated. "I thought, you were doing something, you're not so it doesn't matter." the words pushed out his lips at the speed molasses dripped down a hill in the summer. "I..I'm Maeda. Nice to make your acquaintance sempai." He looked away from the boys and thought briefly of whether he had approached the situation properly. He made a note to ask them, if they didn't get aggressive.
